Hi Anson. I followed your initial video to install Sonoma on my Mid 2014 MBP. It worked like a dream, the only difference being that the OpenCore Patcher was already at 1.4.3 and the version of Sonoma that it installed was already 14.5! So I didn't have to think about anything you went through in this video. Super happy. I sent you some dosh for a drink
The Man, The Myth, The Legend....Anson Alexander, Savior of Unsupported Macs Everywhere...thank you again. You helped me "save" half a dozen unsupported Macs going back to 2010 Mac Pro 5,1s, 2011 iMac 21.5', 2012 Mac Mini, 2013 iMac 27" (2), 2016 MacBook, etc. All paperweights collecting dust until I found your solution. 💪
Hey @Anson Thank You for your video I did everything you said following it to a t. Then after all that 2 things happened 1- my 2012 MacBook pro is slower that ever and yes i have a ssd HD with plenty of memory left, and 16 MD Ram 2- My MacBook Pro lost the WiFi connection. I tried using the Time Machine but that did nothing. I found a video on how to reset the WiFi but nothing helps Im dead in the water. Any advice or help will be greatly appreciated. Thank You
Used your first video for Sonoma to breathe new life into my 2012 MacBook Pro... has worked awesome ever since. Now back again thanks to this video to update to 14.5 - Thanks so much! Really appreciate it :)
Thank you Anson for all your videos. I first discovered your channel searching for "How to install Sonoma on unsupported Macs"... That was the beginning of my journey into the world of Mac...
Thanks mate. I run a Mac mini 2012 with i7, 16GB RAM and 1TB SSD. I ran the update and it took a while with no issues. Then installed the new version of OpenCore. It worked fine. The big question is security. And also if there will be always free because there is a lot of work for developers to come up with patches all the time.
Hi Anson, I updated my MacBook Pro 2011, and it took me a good 10 hours (yes, you read that right 😀). While it worked okay initially, albeit a little slower than usual, I can’t reboot and start my MacBook now, unfortunately. I’d also like to mention that I have a 500GB hard drive with enough space for the update. I’ve updated to 14.5
I already had OCLP 1.4.3 on my mid-2015 15" MBP because that was the current version when I followed your original instructions. For me, the update to 14.5 was a little smoother. The macOS update started downloading right away (didn't have to do it twice), and OCLP detected that I was doing this and offered to download any additional resources that may be needed post-update. I hit OK and it proceeded to download "KDK Build 23F79." After the computer rebooted a few times during the update process, I logged back in and performed the "Root patching" procedure. Everything seems back to normal. For me, the whole process seemed to take just as long as a regular supported update. I took screen shots of the OCLP windows that came up if you want them.
@@AnsonAlexanderI have a problem with updating my MacBook Pro 2015. It fan is going crazy I can see pointer and I see hour and messege I said on home screen pounter sometimes turns to rajnbow ball it is taking half an hour pls help

Now all i can say is that im really happy to have mac os sonoma on that macbook, if i find any bugs or issues i will write everything in this section.
THANK YOU 💜THANK YOU 💜THANK YOU 💜 This was a bit glitchy to install (USB thumb drive problems; wireless keyboard problems) but once we got past the glitchy to the actual download, it was smooth sailing! Thank you so much for posting this video~ we watched you closely step by step so when it wasn't working right we could see what it should look like and go back and re-do steps. I have an iMac 27" screen, late 2013 desktop that I've taken really good care of since I bought it over 10 years ago, hard drive was replaced in 2018, RAM is fine and extra memory in the spare slots put in last year, screen is still beautiful and crisp and really nice for watching videos, everything is fine, it was just that Apple wouldn't let it update out of Catalina and Apple was no longer producing updates for Catalia itself leaving the security of the computer vulnerable. And from an economic and environmental viewpoint I have a BIG problem with that. Now I'm running Sonoma 14.5 latest update NO PROBLEM. And the only cost was our time and 2 USB sticks (the first one we wrecked...ooops). You deserve a million subscribers!!!
Thank god I bumped into this man... I have a 3,1 cmp running Mojave(patched).. Im hoping that this mans upgrade will work with my comp since I love that cmp and have a higher end graphics card and lots of RAM
II followed all the steps but with a wireless keyboard it didn't boot the right way, so now do I have to throw away the effort and usb stick and start over from the beginning? or is there a way to go back a few steps and reboot with a wired keyboard ?
I did it ! The updating from updaes worked for me 🎉 if i tried to install from USB stick I was getting stuck at Mac needs internet error. Logged in, updated and voila it worked then installed post update stuff to get back internet. Thanks from 🇮🇳
I updated my mid 2012 MBP last weekend using the OCLP installer method and a USB stick. Partly by mistake because I wasn’t sure at the time if I could just straight install the update as you would for a supported system but with hindsight it might have been easier anyway. Did get a boot hang on the black screen with Apple logo and a stuck progress bar but a hard reboot solved that and all running fine.
I noticed that the new OCLP does not delete the old OCLP icon. This might be why you think it does not report the updated version properly. Find the new icon for OCLP and click on it instead. It will report the proper updated version of OCLP. Hint! You can delete the old OCLP icon because you have already upgraded to the new OCLP. Just use the new OCLP icon (program).
thanks man, I have a question, how it runs in old Macs? I mean its hard for our processors to run that OS or its better to keep an old OS. I mean for performance, thanks again
Thank you very much for this video. Been looking around to see if I could upgrade my MBP 2015 directly from System Preferences, there were many detailed videos that omitted this basic information.
I think you're getting the versions confused. OCLP was at version 1.4.3 (not 14.3) at the time he recorded the video. The 14.5 refers to macOS Sonoma version. If you have OCLP 1.4.3, and you start the Sonoma update to 14.5, it should offer to download additional resources that will be needed after the macOS update is complete. You will need to run the OCLP "root patching" after it's all done so it can use these new resources.
Thank you very much for the video. I've been waiting for it. One good turn deserves another so here's one for you: Advice on backing up a OCLP/Sonoma installation is hard to find. I've always used SuperDuper but, when used after an OCLP/Sonoma install, it always gives me an error message and quits. Someone on Reddit suggested using SD after removing the root patches and IT WORKED. Took a while but SD finished without any errors. After the B/U I reapplied root patches and was good to go. BTW, Reddit has a good OCLP subreddit.
Well done Anson 👍. I installed Sonoma 14.5 a week ago, thanks to your previous tutto. Now Window turned into default starting if don't rush to click on Sonoma. I tried in 'settings' to choose mac Sonoma as default disk and nothing has changed
Mate I have same iMac has yours used latest open core and install the postroot patches once installed and it’s no slower then any of the older versions

This was my first actual problem. Late-2012 i5 Mac mini w/ 16GB + 500GB SSD. Ran all previous versions flawlessly. Did the Sonoma 14.5 update and it freezes on the login window. Monkeyed around with it for several hours, no joy. Hoping you've got the answer for me in this video!
I tried this on my 2012 MacBook Pro and yes it worked but it ran so slow I went back to the original OS. Took me an entire day to do it then reverse the process. Hard pass.
My issue is that it keeps freezing... how were you able to reinstall, and did you also completely remove the opencore patcher? I am leaning to a hard pass as well!
@@Chuckeynorris I got a copy of the old os and made a bootable usb. Then used the restore keys when booting then select the USB to load from. Yes I completely removed the opencore
@Remen_guist thank you for sharing! I tried numerous times using a Bootable USB but was unsuccessful. What I was able to do, however, was a Time Machine restore. I have not had any issues since.
I like the macOS Sonoma I installed in my 2012 macbook pro and yes its a little slow,ad of today 10/26/2024 i updated to the sequoia i like it but its very slow I aldo habe the m2 macbook pro eith the sequoia and its fast on the new macbooks
I updated my mid 2012 MacBook pro 13” and left it to ‘sleep’ overnight while it did its indexing thing. I found it ran slower when the fancy moving background was on. Changing that to a static image fixed the slowness
Well… not sure what you mean by the Finder directions but all M series Macs can update to the latest operating system normally so you don’t need to install Unsupported Sonoma on your M2. Just update to Sonoma through the Apple Menu like normal.
Fresh install went all the way through but won't let me get past the log in screen. Password entered and then the spinning wheel appears and then the screen hangs. Any fixes? Tried booting into safe mode but no luck.
You did not hear of any issues with OCLP installations of Sonoma on unsupported Macs? Well, for instance both Topaz tools (Photo and Video) DO run but with an incomplete, unusable UI ! So I hunted up and down for OCLP replacements and every Google search with the criteria "without OCLP" or "besides OCLP" or "OCLP alternatives" faithfully presented the results with just OCLP. Is there any help? Help on the mentioned UI issues were not found, not even on Dortania.
On a Mac mini am I going to need a corded keyboard to complete this. I get to the part to chose the file to backup from and my keyboard and mouse freezes.

I still was not able to figure out, "How to CLONE the disk of OCLP MacOS Sonoma on Unsupported Macbook Pro mid 2012?" (Tried Carbon Copy Cloner &SuperDuper but i'm out of luck)
The download timed out twice around 13gb. Instead I switched my old Macbook Air to Linux. interesting enough, the thunderbolt to HDMI converter that I had bought years ago, that stopped working for some odd reason, suddenly started working when I am using the Mac with Linux instead of macOS. The laptop is as fast as the day I bought it, so the decision to cut off updates was obviously not due to the limitations of the device I had no idea Apple cut security updates off like this, otherwise I'd have never bought it new. Linux saved the day though
What do you mean about cutting off security releases? You mean for older OSes? Usually they will still patch vulnerabilities in older OSes - there have been a lot of Ventura and Monterey releases this year.
For some reason, I had TONS of problems getting this to actually run to completion. Your video seems very well done, but after it started to go down the 'final installation of 29 minutes remaining' portion' my 2015 Early MBP struggled to get through the install and instead of 'completing' would restart then show the apple logo and time out to failing to find where to start. This was never covered under your video and was HOURS in the making trying to figure out after numerous restarts how to get this wounded machine through this otherwise good video projected above. After it restarts, unlike your video, I had to keep holding down the Option key and TRY and figure out if I should choose the EFI boot, (if it even showed), the 'Sonoma Installer' or the 'Sonoma HD' drive. None of this was covered in any of your videos. It was a real struggle trying to get this completed... It's done now, but even after the Post Patch install, it won't upgrade through Apple Update. It runs, but won't update, my mousepad doesn't work with the touch action and it won't update. You decide...

Everything went like clockwork, thanks a million and keep up the good work please.
Your videos are SO awesome, every single one!
Glad to be able to help - I’m trying to walk the line between being thorough and concise with these unsupported videos :)
I have open core 14.3 but I do not see any option for updating to update to 14.5?
I think you're getting the versions confused. OCLP was at version 1.4.3 (not 14.3) at the time he recorded the video. The 14.5 refers to macOS Sonoma version. If you have OCLP 1.4.3, and you start the Sonoma update to 14.5, it should offer to download additional resources that will be needed after the macOS update is complete. You will need to run the OCLP "root patching" after it's all done so it can use these new resources.
Noticed you didn’t use a USB drive on this one? Does that mean that it’s possible to get this done without having to use an external USB drive?
I got a late 2012 iMac. Sonoma didn't quite work for me yet. Currently using Ventura.
i just bought my mbp mid 2015 with os monterey, i want to update to sonoma..unfortunately my internet is suck...downloading 12GB sonoma its a time consuming... i'll think i'm using my monterey for a while then...
Stuck on login screen after updating 14.4 to 14.5, drivers were missing I patched the post root install from Oclp and now stuck on login screen
Same issue. Waiting for an OCLP update
@@antonissotiriou I managed to fix this
- Hold Command+C on apple logo restart
-terminal will appear
type diskutil list
see your drive name
Type
mount -uw "/Volumes/"
Run it, then type
bless --mount "/Volumes/" --bootefi --last-sealed-snapshot
then do restart, while restarting hold Shift to enter safe boot
once you reach login screen, enter password, BACKUP your data, open OCLP connect to internet via ethernet cable (you may need adapter for this)
download sonoma 14.4
Install and run patches
You are downgraded
DONE
i cant use bluetooth on my late 2011 macbook pro
This was my first actual problem. Late-2012 i5 Mac mini w/ 16GB + 500GB SSD. Ran all previous versions flawlessly. Did the Sonoma 14.5 update and it freezes on the login window. Monkeyed around with it for several hours, no joy. Hoping you've got the answer for me in this video!
Freezing in the login window - same issue, as another guy here in the comments. No solution found yet
Same here.. everytime I need to restart. Cant resume from lockscreen
Why does the FINDER give help directions that do not make sense? I am on a Mac Apple M2 Ultra Desktop with OS Sonoma 14.5.
Any fixes? Tried booting into safe mode but no luck.
you are the 3rd guy (here in the comments) with this problem. Me, same issue. No solution yet...
@@antonissotiriou Surprisingly it’s now let me in. I just kept trying over and over again and it worked
Hello Anson, how can I revert to the old version from Sonoma on macbook air 2015, this is because my laptop is very slow in responding, i tried resetting it but its not working, will be glad if you will help me through

Thanks a lot for this video, very useful ! I have one question. Is it possible to keep one Volume with Monterey and one volume with Sonoma on the same disk (with a Mac Pro 2013) and work with both ? Thanks for your advice.
Excellent video! But I fail repeatedly as my USB RAM Stick is erased prior to creating the Installation disk.Error Domain Code=513."Don't have permission to save the file in the folder "Install macOS Sonoma". Underlying error is Code=1 "Operation not permitted."
Hello.. I finally installed but now I'm at the apple inicial set up page I was following every step until I got to where it says that my macbook is own my Google llc and I need to be enrolled before continuing .. any ideas how to by pass this? Thanks
Hi Anson, i have followed the instructions but i keep getting asked to save it on disk at the kast step and i'm in a loop, do i save it on the Hard Drive or the Data disk, thanks for all you do :)
Hello! I have updated my mid 2010 macbook pro to latest sonoma but it’s stuck on home lockscreen with keyboard and trackpad not working
I think the open corey legacy apps just install as a new one when you update to a new version, it happened with me so i just deleted the old one
Many thanks. i installed sonoma on my mid 2015 MBP, the only issue is that my firewire audio device does not work, i don't know if there is a way to have it work as it works on monterey. Thanks again for your videos.
Sonoma 14.5 to Sonoma 14.6 using Open Core Legacy Patcher 1.5.0 on Macbook Air 2017 fails with login loop. I think we have to wait for next version
I still run Monterey Open Core on my macPro 2010. I also installed the next macOS on a different SSD but then it can't find my Magic Mouse BT anymore, while it works like a charm in Monterey. Any idea's?
HI, many thanks for your efforts on this subject. I'm running 14.5 on Late 2013 i7 MBP Retina 16gb plus Iris graphics AND Mid 2011 MBP i7 16gb plus Radeon 4000 graphics. Both running hotter when using TH-cam, about 10C. Retina fan running at 3665 rpm getting GPU temp of 63C. Any comments as to why GPU temp so much higher greatly received. ( Full internal clean on both and heatsink thermal paste changed on the retina )
i tired updateing to ventura running open core legacy latest version 1.50 i think only came out created everything using the program rebooted and it goes to install but says ventura is not compatible. this is a bit confusing as it is listed as ok mac mini late 2012 . gave up after reading through and making sure id following the process and im good with computer stuff
When updating the OS to MacOS Sonoma, the system does not recognize the login and password
Thanks for the support. I accidentally updated to macOS Sonoma 15.0 beta on my 2017 Mac; it works fine, but I lost the connection to the Wi-Fi, and I can't see my Wi-Fi now. Do you have a fix in mind?
hey Anson I installed lagacy patcher by watching your video a few months ago it was really nice now I have a question is that by doing update the sonoma , Is there any issue to lose hard drive data?
Hi Anson, I'm running a mid 2011 27 inch Imac which boots from an external SSD drive using Thunderbolt connection.
I want to upgrade to Sonoma from High Sierra.
I downloaded the latest version of OCLP, but when I opened the app, the post install Root Patch button is Greyed out.
Is this normal ?
Does this mean there is a compatibility issue with my computer ?
Thanks for your help.
hi i have a problem downloading macos sonoma software in opencore legacy patcher always saying connection broken after consuming about 5gb of data
Hello Anson,
thanks for your great videos.
Yes, I updated my MacBook Pro Mid 2012 to macOS Sonoma 14.5 with your instructions ;-)
Now I have a question because I can't find an answer.
Whenever I turn off the laptop with the power supply and the battery is charged to 100% and e.g. turn it on the next day without the power supply, the laptop goes off after 1-2 minutes for no reason. Only when I connect the laptop to the power supply does it wake up and work, but the battery indicator shows me 1%, as if the battery has been discharged overnight without the laptop being switched on.
Does anyone have any ideas?
ok....the photo library is lost and the iCloud does not sync.....when in the Photos I double-click to expand...it does expand but the photo disappears after 2 seconds.....thats not normal...I have installed Sonoma 14.5 in 2 Mac mini's and a Mac book pro...the problem appears in one of my Mac mini's(both 2012 i7)....any suggestions???thanks
Trying to get Sonoma on my Mac Pro early 2009. Already upgraded the graphics cards and flashed the computer to 5,1. Now, while trying to install OpenCore, got everything downloaded and ready to go on the flash drive, but all I get is a black screen while trying to reboot while holding the option key. So, I can't select the USB as the bootable drive to get everything going. Any ideas?
Hello, after installation it doesn’t allow me to open session, I write the psssowrd, it loads and get me back to the password again 🙂↔️
Thank you, I’ve installed Sonoma on my macbook pro late 2013. If i decide to remove the opencore legacy, how to do it?
Hey Anson, Thanks for your video (as great & precise as always)! I literally watched your video to update my MBP mid-14 13" to Sonoma 14.4.1.
Just wonder if you can share any tips to remove the downloaded MacOS Update if one doesn't want to update to Sonoma 14.5 but accidentally downloaded the MacOS 14.5 Update via the system preference. I am in this case. Much appreciated for your tips and advice. Thanks again !
HELP! Following your instructions, I was able to take my MBP 2015 up to Sonoma 14.5, however when I tried to take my wife's iMac 2011 to Sonoma, I was only able to reboot it in Target Mode. What can I do now to get it working in ANY Mac OS?

Hi, I have a doubt. I upgraded to ventura 13.6.9 on my iMac 27" late 2013. I can see a software update in the system settings to update to Sonoma. Can I use that option? Or should I do the whole process of OCLP installation? (I have the latest 1.5.0 of OCLP installed)

Will it definitely work???? I ask because I do music Production with my MacBook Pro 💻 Mid-2012 & I am currently running MACOS Catalina 10.15.7 with 2.9 GHz i7 Processor 500 GB SSD & 16 GB of ram
I'm currently running my old iMac on an external SSD drive with Catalina installed. Can I follow the same process and upgrade my external SSD from Catalina to Sonoma? Do I need to skip/use different steps?
I was able to easily and successfully install macOS Sonoma 14.5 with OpenCore as you instructed! 🔥
However, what I find happening now is that my 27' iMac 2013 now randomly and consistently freezes... even when I'm not even using the system. 😢 I can hardly use the system for even 5 minutes before it freezes.
Any help on what can fix this issue?
Hey. First of all, nice video and tutorial. It worked great at first.
Then I tried updating it to 14.5 but now it does not log on with my user.
It keeps loading and never finishes.
I'm able to go into safe mode but not the regular boot.
Tried patching it again on safe mode but did not work.
Any ideas?
I can't even install Sonoma to my 2012 MBP, despite following all the proper steps. I keeps stalling when it is at the installing Sonoma stage to the HD. I finally gave up on it after numerous unsuccessful tries, and just went ahead and bought a ThinkPad T480, and intend to install Linux instead
Interesting. If you're okay with Linux, why didn't you just install Linux on the Mac instead of buying new hardware?
@AnsonAlexander after numerous tries (over 10 tries lol), it finally worked today! I guess persistence paid off. Not sure why it took several attempts in getting it installed. But I don't have regrets on still getting another laptop, this time PC based. Thanks for the tutorial!
I've updated my system to 14.5 HOWEVER after the update my external USB drive was missing from desktop and Finder. Even though it shows up on Disk Utility. I'm unable to mount or eject the drive. And reformatting it is out of the question.
I've followed your tutorials to install sonoma on my macbook pro 2011.
I've successfully installed it but I still have issues:
* After terminating post install configurations like username and password... The seystem reboots but OpenCore Legacy Patcher doesn't pop up to finish installation.
* WiFi is on but can't find any available wireless network.
* The wallpaper is white though I can open settings and applications.
** So what should I do to solve the issues?

I still was not able to figure out, "How to CLONE the disk of OCLP MacOS Sonoma on Unsupported Macbook Pro mid 2012?" (Tried Carbon Copy Cloner &SuperDuper but i'm out of luck)
The download timed out twice around 13gb. Instead I switched my old Macbook Air to Linux. interesting enough, the thunderbolt to HDMI converter that I had bought years ago, that stopped working for some odd reason, suddenly started working when I am using the Mac with Linux instead of macOS. The laptop is as fast as the day I bought it, so the decision to cut off updates was obviously not due to the limitations of the device
I had no idea Apple cut security updates off like this, otherwise I'd have never bought it new.
