My dad used a 2007 iMac from early 2007 to 2023. It worked perfectly even though the browsers were probably risky to use at the age it was, but the hhd died and after already going thorough 2 of them we called it quits on that computer and just stuck with the 2011 MacBook Pro that we had aswell.. I still use that 2011 MacbookPro for anything music related. Works great and browsing still works fine. It’s on high sierra.

I've got a MacBook Late 2011, I7 Dual Core, 16 GB RAM. I was using Ventura and it was pretty smooth. However, I made the huge mistake of upgrading it to Sequoia. It doesn't share contents on Meet, Teams and any other meeting platforms any more. It was a mistake because I use it a lot (teaching online). I'll soon get back to Ventura. Thanks for clearing up my doubts about this! Nice video. Cheers from Brazil.

Hi Jessie, had the same problem with my beloved trash can (nuclear reactor for some of us) running Chrome. After at least one hour of digging the net, I found the solution - disable the hardware acceleration in Chrome, Settings, System and relaunch Chrome.
My workaround was to install Chrome Canary (it's working somehow), open the Settings - System, then open the normal Chrome, and blindly open the same Settings, System and finally click (blindly again, but you can see the cursor changing) disable and relaunch.
I had to make both windows exactly the same size on the screen, for "precision".
Maybe is not the best solution, but it worked for me and I'm very happy with Chrome, as before. Didn't try to re-enable the hardware acceleration, might be working again(???).
And for everybody's info, my D700s are feeling very well! Even when running games in Bootcamp.
Thank you so much for all your effort in helping us with our old Apple stuff.

    • @dkodentsev
      @dkodentsev หลายเดือนก่อน

Not sure why, but my previous reply was auto-deleted :) Long story short - to avoid blind navigation you can run Chrom from macos shell using the following argument: --disable-gpu "$@" You still need to disable GPU acceleration in chrome setting to make the change permanent.

  • @insoninenine8749

One crucial point you really should consider including is the importance of installing "h264ify" extension if you are using Chrome browser on an older machine without VP9/HEVC acceleration. This will automatically select the h264 format for youtube streaming, which can be hardware accelerated- as opposed to the default software acceleration of VP9/HEVC which comes at an enormous performance penalty for these older machines.

Both machines run significantly better with Sequoia than Sonoma. 5.1 had graphical glitches on Ventura, got stuck in a bootloop in the installation of Sonoma, Sequoia just runs fine. Dear Sir: I have a Macbook Pro 8,1 from early 2011. I replaced the battery and upgraded the ram from 8 to 16 gb and have High Sierra on a 512 gb hard drive and Sequioa 15.1 with the latest OCLP on an 256 gb SSD. While the maps app does not work with Sequioa I do not mind since I rarely use that but I can plug the other drive into a USB port and in this way I can dual boot. I did eventually find out that the Macbook Pro I have has a non metal gpu otherwise known as Sandy Bridge. Right now I am contemplating using a couple of different Linux OS on USB with this computer because of the Intel cpu. In this video it was sounding like Mac's older than 2012 will have trouble running Sequioa.

Hi Jessie, great work here! Thank you...! A couple of nuances that could help people are the following. The 2014 & 2015 MacBool Pro A1398 have two main variants: 1. 2.2GHz, 2.5GHz or 2.8GHz quad i7 with Iris Pro 5200 integrated graphics as you tested and 2. Radeon R9 M370X option in the 2015 and GeForce GT 750M in the 2014 (2.5GHz or 2.8GHz both years, same quad core i7 CPU). Additionally, the 2014 models have NVMe PCIe 2.0 x 4 lane SSD expansion while the 2015 models have PCIe 3.0 x 4 lane SSD expansion (and will accept some PCIe 4.0 cards). So, a new third party SSD will greatly improve ALL of the load time benchmarks. I'm not sure Geekbench 6 will be much different overall, but some apps may really benefit from the dedicated GPU options. I will do some testing here (I'm typing this on a 2015 MBP 15" 2.2GHz with integrated graphics and Sequoia 15.01 with OCLP 2.02 and a 3rd party PCIe 3.0 x 4 SSD and everything works flawlessly). Then the 2016 & 2017 A1708 (2 Thunderbolt 3 ports) should also be tested separately since they also have an upgradeable SSD and no touch bar/T2. Both core i5 and core i7 versions.

The Mac Pro has a flashed RX580 GPU, 2 x 3.46 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon processors, as well as a 6 port USB 3.0 card. Both are currently running Sequoia 15.1 via OCLP. One the things I really like about the 5,1s is the almost insane amount of storage that can be installed. I have two 1gig SSD's (one with Monterey and the other with Sequoia) a DVD, and 3 internal HD as well as two external connected via the USB3 hub for a total of 34 TB total storage. I use the Pro for general web stuff, e-mail as well as for photo corrective work from high resolution scans of negatives/tx that go back to early 60's. Also corrective/enhancement of old DVD shows. Works just fine - am sure that newer machines would do some of this faster, but no big deal. Why spend thousand's of dollars for a bit quicker unit?

I've got 3 'vintage' Macs running Sequoia. A late 2009 imac (core 2 duo) a mid 2011 imac (i5 2400s) and a mid 2012 mac mini (i5 3210m). The 2009 imac runs Sequoia fairly well but chokes watching youtube videos (without h264ify enabled) or if I've got more than 4 or 5 tabs open in Safari, even thought it has 12gb of ram. The 2011 imac runs Sequoia flawlessly but the practically non-working bluetooth and non-metal gpu (terascale HD6750) really let this thing down. My mac mini with 16gb ram and dual 500gb ssd's gets along in Sequoia pretty well but definitely feels a bit slower than my 2011 imac, the geekbench 6 scores prove it with the multicore score being almost half of what my 2011 imac gets (881 vs 1546). The mac mini has an edge though with proper metal support and working bluetooth

I would recommend, if you can afford it, to upgrade your SSD before upgrading. Mac OS systems newer than Catalina are not designed to run on hard drives, and are very slow, thanks to those systems only using the Apple File System. If you use this computer a lot, also would recommend you jump up to at least OS Ventura, as Big Sur has been out of support for awhile, which will make your app support very spotty, and can give you some security risks. If you don’t use the device so much, it should be fine.

After a clean installation without issues, I followed the instructions up to the post-install root patch. The Mac seemed to function well, at least for the first reboot. I also installed some utilities and enjoyed exploring new features. Everything seemed stable.
However, on the next reboot, after a few minutes, the Mac would freeze, displaying the spinning globe cursor until it completely locked up. After several attempts, where the same problem occurred (stable during installation but crashing in subsequent reboots), I tried installing Sonoma, but the result was the same.

      Seems like a hardware issue then… 🤔

@@JessiesFlying Yes, I believe so. It's likely that the AMD FirePro D500 3 GB graphics card is not well supported by OCLP. Also, I noticed that the problems arise right after I connect an external 1TB drive to update it - and this was also a bit troublesome with Ventura. Thank you for your constant generosity. Best regards!

Thank you for this video, the think is I have macbookpro 2015 but 8Gb and i5 processor. It is not the same you use in this test, do you think it is OK? Less ram, less processor.....

My MacBook Pro mid-2012 has an i5 Dual-Core, Intel HD Graphics 4000 536 MB, 16 GB 1333 Mhz DDR3. Apparently, the differences between the MacBook Pro 2012 you tested with i7 and more advanced graphics, and mine, is enough to cause problems by updating to Sdquoia with OpenCore-Patcher 2.2.1. One basic issue was the wallpaper not being displayed. I've not completed testing, but that one issue is unacceptable to me. Now I'm attempting to determine how to revert to an earlier MacOS version.

I’m thinking the USB ports stopped working on a 2013 or 2015 MacBook Pro 15 inch -A1398. Not sure if it happened after Sonoma or Sequoia. But we lost WiFi access and trying to use a Ethernet cable to install the root patches to correct but the ports aren’t working. Any idea or suggestions?
