  • After a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in the knee, many people are concerned about returning to an active lifestyle, whether they undergo ACL reconstruction surgery or not. Hummad, a basketball player with a non-surgical ACL tear, shares his recovery experience with physiotherapy. His physiotherapist, Corey Persic from Kinetic Labs, takes us through the decisions and testing protocol that Hummad underwent to successfully and safely return to sports.

Thanks for sharing your personal journey. I’m about to have the surgery and hope I heal as well as you did.

Great video! Wondering where I can find the normative values for iso knee ext and flexion strength. Thanks!

I have ACL for almost 9 years. I haven’t seen any doctor to look at it. First 6 months I cannot walk properly because I can’t bend or full straight my knee. I just put some ointment everyday and try to stretch it then after 10months i play badminton with knee brace then after a year it twisted and popped again. I rest for 3 months and go back again to badminton. Then it happen again and again. And the most recent is last month after 2 years. When i play pickleball I twisted and popped my knee again. I rest it for 3 weeks and play again. And now its better but I’m playing with knee brace the one with the metal on the side. Soon I’ll go to the doctor to see if it’s recommended to an operation or i just need to have a therapy for my knee.

Its a mix of off-the-shelf and custom software. Similar to Dari. Great to have if you treat athletes.

Why did you opt for no surgery? Isn’t there a high chance of retear without surgery?

No way you regain full strength and stability in your knee without a reconstruction of a full tear. Just an ACL tear is difficult to heal much less a full rupture which is impossible to regrow

It's not unheard of for the ACL to heal. See here: bmjopensem.bmj.com/content/8/Suppl_1/A3.2
