  • In surfing, one of the most common body parts to be injured is the knee.
I don't think it was a coincidence that my knee got injured after just re-entering the waster after a 6 week hiatus with a broken toe. With deconditioning and a lack of effective rehab / fitness maintenance, injuries become more likely.
In this video I wanted to share my journey and give you guys some ideas behind PRE-habbing your own knees or helping you recover from injury.

Hey Kale. This is one of the best videos I've ever seen that covers everything about injury recovery. There are some key facts that you and your coaches cover that are either not brought up or taken seriously. Not being able to to what you love because of a physical obstacle is an overwhelming mental and emotional rollercoaster, so having a support system of friends and family is super important because that will help you gain motivation and patience. Motivation to do rehab exercises correctly and reassure yourself that this injury is only temporary, and patience to let the tissue properly heal and recover and get stronger. At 19, my L4-L5 and L5-S1 discs ruptured training jiu-jitsu and was out for 2 years. At 24, a left rib cracked in boxing then broke at pool party 1 week later, was out for 2 to 3 months. At 25, training jiu-jitsu, my semitendinosus tendon tore, my girlfriend broke up with me a month later, had to quit my jobs because I could barely walk, started popping Vicodin like candy. I'd hit the darkest and lowest low unimaginable. Luckily, 1 or 2 months later I discovered CBD Isolate while working at a pot farm and after smoking a full dose of it, it was literally like a morphine shot to my right glute. I was liberated from the couch and paralysis, started walking without limping, started running and swimming again. After accepting the harsh truth that I am never going to be a jiu-jitsu world champion, I started surfing again it eventually became a bigger and in-depth part of my life. To this day I still can't believe how far my surfing has progressed and how mentally, emotionally, even physically healing it's been for me. Sounds like a total fuckin Californian cliché but cannabis and surfing gave me a 2nd chance at life. To not dwell on my past and failures, to try to be more in tune with the present, and focus on and be excited for the future. It's unfortunate how illegal cannabis is in Australia because it is indisputably, a tangible healer for a lot of medical conditions from illnesses to injuries. The actions you take to pick and build yourself up is what's admiring and it inspires me to be as healthy and happy as I can possibly be. I'm turning 30 soon, I still have a lot of energy, I'm finally studying what I want to study in school, I want to compete, I want to give the best I can for as long as I'm here.

All the best with your recovery, Kale! I got hooked on surfing a few years ago, but last year I had a bad fall in the bouldering gym and fully ruptured my ACL, PCL, LCL, common peroneal nerve, and popliteal artery. Doctors weren't sure I'd keep my leg, let alone walk again. Last month, however, after 3 major surgeries and hundreds of hours of appointments and rehab, I managed to surf for the first time again. It was a good day :) Before my injury I had set a goal to get barreled, turns out I might still be able to achieve it one day. Physio is a lot of work, but my recovery wouldn't have been nearly as successful without it. Thanks for the great content, as always 🤙

I just injured my knee a few hours ago while surfskating and then I asked myself if you ever did a video on knee-injuries…and here it is and it helped me a lot, just to get in the Right mindset, just to accept that the next Weeks will be different than I had planned. Thank you for sharing. 🤗

@@dragunov5299 Thanks dude, I did get professional physio to help me, shout out to Chris Mulvaney at Shape Physiotherapy who is awesome and worked remotely online with me. Also added collagen to my smoothies, drank lemon balm to reduce inflamation, and am still doing the rehab exercises pre/post surf to this day. The acute phase sucked, I think that doing the physio was a key part of my recovery.

This video popping up on my feed is very timely! I'm a cyclist and just had a bad crash a slashed through my meniscus, which required surgery. In a leg brace and no weight bearing for 6 weeks to 12 weeks going to be a long road to getting back on this bike. I think once you've accepted the situation and as I have stopped thinking about that end goal of actually getting back on the bike, and just taking each day as it comes and take the highs and the lows it becomes and easier process. Great video and insight 👏

Got an mcl injury a week ago from getting a 6ft lip on the back of my head and I got squashed onto the board.
It sucks but it’s great to know that recovery is around the corner and can be fully attained with some focus.
Thanks, check you on the flip side!

  • @robertical

It's great to see the progress. The body is fantastic at compensating, so be careful, until you are 100%, as all the other parts of the knee are working 110% to make up for the injured area and you can break something else.
Also, something that helped in my recovery was to drop my weight a few kg. Each kg extra in acceleration puts a lot more force and stress on the injured areas. You drop 5kg and you reduce the stress in your knees by a lot, while at the same speed, helping the recovery while reducing the risk of other injuries.

Hi Kale! I'm glad you're feeling better now and you could resume your surfing! I just injured the MCL of my right leg (I'm a regular) 6 weeks ago and I still haven't resumed surfing. The truth is that I have not been able to have physical therapy or even good medical advice and I have completely stopped my physical activity, something that I reckon is very negative. Now I have started to take some walks but very few and little by little. It would be really helpful if you could share some little knee routine exercises for recovery. Thank you very much and cheer up!

You might want to try going to like a grain-free diet and staying off of dairy and sugar can really help ease arthritis symptoms. I also have the same diagnosis but I don't claim it because I know that I can make my body healthy again by what I eat and how I live :-)) and wish the same healing to you bro. Also its a little bit harder to do but intermittent fasting and fasting in general also helps ease a lot of inflammation in arthritis symptoms, so does a raw food diet which is really really hard but amazingly eases the symptoms.. 😁😋🙏💖🤙🤙🤙🌊🌊

Sorry to hear this Kale. If I was you I will probably rest longer than 5 weeks . At least six months. Injuries are not always due to a lack or stretching or strength. Sometimes are a consequence of over use. I developed swimmers elbow for excessive swimming and paddling. The more I stretch and do physical therapy the more I irritated the ligaments and jeopardize the healing. Also do not use ice. It slows down the blood healing process. Only use ice to reduce pain. Use heat pads instead to accelerate and enhance the blood stream to your knee which is what really heals the injury.

G'day Kale, I gather we have a mutual friend in Parissa Shuri from Whale Beach days. I'm reaching out because I've recently torn my meniscus and then I came across this video. I'd love to have a chat and hear more of your story if your open to it and perhaps get some guidance on talking with health professionals because so far my physio is sending me to an orthopaedic surgeon for his opinion, but I feel that often these surgeons are more thinking of the $$ than the individual. I say this because as far as I can feel, the injury has already improved greatly in just 2 weeks.
I'm concerned for my future of surfing and I don't want to rush into going under the knife. Surfing for me is definitely where I find a great deal of salvation in life and I don't want to shorten or jeopardise that.
    Thanks in advance,
    Dan

@@maxisworld9640 hey maxi, yea, im not surfing as hard as I’d like to be able as I’m limited with having a hamstring graft in my rear leg for the ACL recon, but I can surf, have fun, still give it a nudge when it’s hollow or bigger there’s no difference there, I may kick the board out if I fully disconnect on a drop if it doesn’t feel good but apart from that regular physio and prehab style of training keeps me surfing.
