    I appreciate the honesty with this. It's easy to romanticize living in a tent, but you showed the reality of such a situation.

    Thank you for being honest about living off the grid. It can be a fairy tale to some people but the practical uses can be very challenging. I admire the fact that you persevered through the harsh weather to put a smaller footprint on the environment.

      +chilllzone Cheers. Yeah, it really was an amazing place to live, but there are challenges that you do need to deal with when living in that kind of situation. I had intended on staying there right up until the Tiny House was finished, but the cold, and the practicality of the location (when it gets wet and muddy) does make things difficult.

    I live year-around in the woods in Michigan in a tent that is only 8x10 and I only heat it when I get into and when I get out of my sleeping bag. The temps I've recorded so far (going on my 3rd year) ranged from 96 degrees F to minus 12 degrees F (with the wind chill a LOT colder than that). I wouldn't recommend it for everyone but, if you want to do it, buy the best equipment you can get your hands on because your life may depend on it.

    Hey. For about six months I've been following your videos on tiny homes. I hadn't gone back much into your archived videos until recently. This is probably your best video, and one of the better I've seen on TH-cam. I tend to get very skeptical of all the positive hype surrounding whatever the 'author' is covering (tiny homes... food... diets... exercise... politics). You RARELY see realistic critiques of negative aspects of their content. This video gives an amazing insight into the realism of this type of living, one I haven't seen before, with great content on how to make it viable. Great work!

    Thank you for sharing your story. I so get the disconnecting part of living away from internet access and the outside world. I lived off grid in a remote area a few years back. I absolutely loved it. You do have to get your act together though before it gets dark and cold since the shed had zero insulation. The only light was from candlelight. And I cooked on a wood burning stove for my family. What absolutely wonderful memories of living with nature.

    I am interested in alternative dwellings, but what is in short supply are honest reviews of what happens after the novelty wears off. Your honest appraisal of living in the belle tent brings out aspects not realized early on. I often wonder how long it takes for the person to go stir crazy in their 80 sq. ft. off grid tiny house, if at all.

      Dan, remember our hero talks about going into town to visit friends in his car, going to the market, internet cafes and more. If someone was completely isolated, they might miss human companionship, but it doesn't sound like he does. Lots of "great times with friends" and more. Alone would be much harder. Many years ago, I lasted four months alone up in Netherlands, outside of Boulder CO, until it snowed so much I had to fight my way out to the road. Scary but incredible experience!

    Me my wife and my 3 children went camping for 2 years. We started in a cheap Canadian tire tent (well expensive for Canadian tire. ) but no canvas tent. It definitely had hard ships but it was also the best times as well. I too found i slept way better. It was hard to stay up late, there is something about living in the woods, only cooking over the fire and spending your day out side instead of in the house that makes life so much better, and makes you sleep so much better. I wish I had your set up though. I might still be doing it.But with three children to take care of it was really really hard at times. Being in Canada it gets really cold hear to some days around -30. So we had to get a trailer and stay in hotels in the winter. That destroyed it for us. Some day I hope to live in a tent again, but it would have to be a custom made one that will keep me worm. Living in nature just seemed more like living, living the way we were meant to live. If only it didn't get so cold here in the winter.Great set up, thanks for sharing.

    I think you've covered all the questions i would've wanted to ask. I traveled around Europe for a year and half, 25 watts solar and wild camped. When i made it back home a set up a place on gov't owned land that wasn't being used. Had a rocket stove and gas cooker for them rainy days. I've had many people asking me what's it like living such a fragile lifestyle. Anyone that found your tent could walk away with your stuff. I do what you do, take the important items with me. Now, I've been looking at emperor cotton bell tents, one thing i don't like about them is the sheer amount of guide lines that come of these things. With your experience with these things, would it be possible to erect and then build a wooden beam frame inside and then glue the canvas to the frame? If it is then adding insulation and then covering with another layer of canvas would be a nice job.
    I'll have a search for other yurt designs, if i can get something without all these guide ropes holding it down or having to build frames to insulate.
    Thanks bud, love that little spot you've got set up. Nothing like peace and quite and nature.

    Ive lived in my canvas hunting tent for 6 months outta the year in Canada, yes best to coat your tent. But the nice thing about the hunting tent is you can put a tarp on the roof, no mold all the water runs off your tent, and you can buy them insulated or I imagine just hang wool or heavy blankets to insulate.Most problems with stoves is they are too small and go out every couple hrs. And you have to get up to restart them.

    Anchor your deck to the ground really well. Create a locked, waterproof hold/.box or cement container underneath the deck (for the expensive stuff while you're out).. Meanwhile you get to enjoy the beauty and simplicity of your environment. Also, Maybe put some thing stiff under or along side your rope bridge for times when you need it to be stiff (just a way to change it when you need to.

    I know my husband lived in a teepee on an American Indian reservation for a while. They do have problems with mice but they could keep it warm even in very cold weather minus 20 outside and they had only t-shirts on. Someone always had to look after the fire at all times but there were quite a few per tent. Ok when young much harder when older!

    Love the Lotus Tent. Just a thought try getting yourself some solar lanterns, flashlights solar with hand crank backup, they also have the solar lids to mason jar. I bought these supplies on EBay and I use them all the time. Reduces electric bill love them. Also when u cannot get out to your bathroom use a 5 gallon pail for indoors just add a toilet seat and you will be all set.

    Regular homes also requires maintenance, though far more expensive at that. I think a tent can be insulated wit double to triple layers of same materials....just change it out in accordance with the Seasons. Air between the layers creates the insulation. I only wished I was living in such an isolated area and in such a shelter, but, I cannot afford to do so. It has been my dream since Childhood.

      That's right. At one time in the not so distant past, you could get wool tent liners in Ireland. Mylar is an interesting idea, facing the reflective side in. It will keep you warm in an emergency and would reflect enough heat back to need small amounts of heat but my prejudice against something less than a mm thick is rejecting it as a viable option. Surely someone, somewhere, has made and slept under a Mylar pup tent in an emergency. I need to start googling (or binging) to see what is out there. It's certainly lighter and cheaper than wool blankets.

    I'm 51 and busy with the preparations of building a platform for a bell tent, I'm planning to live in it for about 50 % of my time. I have a solar powered house with a full operating horsefarm & stables who I share with my 2 daughters and husband, but I want to live in a tent for ages now and next spring I will take the plunge... I have plenty of room on the farm and I want to live in the tent for at least half of my time and being close to nature again. I will have the luxury of bathing and living in the house when its really cold or wet for a long time, but otherwise I will live closer to nature, and if this actually works well, I consider to upgrade to a yurt in a few years. Who knows, I can document my journey on youtube too :D

    It seems that I'll take the same path as you do.
    Until the end of the year I'll try to build a bamboo yurt and go somewhere so I can focus on my long list of unfinished works.
    Next step, building a tiny home and travel across the world.
    Finally, with (hopefully) a good passive income (and lots of life experiences), I'll think about a conventional home with enough space for a family.

    An insulated version of this tent has been on 'the market' for hundreds, if not thousands of years. It's called a Yurt. ;-)

    • @persebra
      @persebra 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +Leo Lenders Yurts were created for mongolia, a cold, but rather dry part of the world.

    • @opopopopopopopopish
      @opopopopopopopopish 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yurts have not just been used or created by mongolians only, they were used all over west- and central asia by nomads. For example in northern Kazachstan there can be really heavy rain falls in autum, spring and summer. With mongolia gaining more popularity and tourist fluctations in the last years, people and companies in European countries like Germany (very heavy rain fall all over the year) have started to built and construct Yurts, that are even more accomondated to the European Climate. But even better than Yurts, are Tipis. The way Plains Indians built them, they were keeping the dry and warm and protected from the heat all year long.

    How did you plumb and supply the water for everything since tents aren't meant for plumbing? Did you just cut holes in the canvas to make room? You also mentioned keeping your deceives charged how did you do that with the solar panels? Did you add electrical and outlets in the tent? I'm looking into this myself and never thought plumbing, electrical, and water could be done. And the fact you were able to do that is fantastic!

    It is great to live for a few months or years at most in the tent, but long term living secure and with having family is to have sturdy house ( of any shape ) with walls to protect from elements, and any natural threat or human made.

    Wonderful talking points and honesty. Especially not having the internet at home, and coming into the flow of nature (going to bed earlier when it gets dark, and rising earlier with the sun). I know I would love being able to hear the trees, and I bet the star gazing is pretty nice at your location! I work from home, and sometimes I have a hard time "switching off". Something to think about, and maybe switch up my routine :) thanks!

    Hey Bryce. I was just thinking... you could build some kind of lock box with a roof on it to put your expensive equipment in. Or a mini shed. It could be handy as extra storage for when you are living in the tiny house. Just an idea.

    • @livingbig
      @livingbig  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +mr_seth Yup, that's a good idea, and if I was planning on staying in the tent for longer that would be a good solution. :)

    I think I’m leaning towards container housing, cabin (if I can afford it) or tiny house on wheels. Hot dry summers 90- 100 degrees plus and cold winters 0-20 degrees Fahrenheit... security is needed as well

    I have some questions. Can you just legally camp there? Who's land that is? What about ill-intent people coming? What happened to your power during the winter?

  • @cornenothome4191

    I like how honest and realistic you think and admit. Where's this project based? You sound from down under which I reckon makes it a little easier temperature-wise. Would like to live in a tent but in Europe it is not possible the year round. Especially when you're injured which I am so I have to pay notice to that. But remote living is what I am gonna work on. Good luck to you.
