Man Living Off-Grid in a Tent on an Island

  • Jojo has been living off-grid in a tent for 18 months, the last 12 of which have been on an island in Sweden! He has a 5 meter (16-foot) Sibley Bell tent set up on a platform, a wood stove for heat, a multi-fuel stove for cooking, a solar panel and a car battery for charging devices, and buckets for dishes, laundry, and showers.
Over the course of the year he has added some creature comforts to the tent, like a bed platform, a small table and shelves, and even a couch!
He is not self-sufficient for food so he still goes to the grocery store each week for fresh food and to stay busy he explores the lake in his canoe, he plays music on his guitar and piano, and he films TH-cam videos about his experience.
In this video, Jojo shares the ups and downs of his lifestyle experiment (spoiler: a lot of them involve wind, winter weather and loneliness) and he gives us a full tour of his tent!

You are living my dream. At least when the weather is good! I am in Minnesota and I’m very certain that I’d be terribly uncomfortable and crabby in a tent in the winter, but it would be heaven for the other half of the year.
I like the calm way you speak and the way you have methodically come up with simple but great solutions to make your experience enjoyable. Perhaps you may someday find a dog with whom to share your special journey. I bet there would be dogs lining up to be your loyal companion!

I was born in Kodiac Alaska and after building the Alaska Pipeliner i staked and filed on land. In the Mentasta Mountains 357 miles from town ( anchorage) and 80 miles into the deep. Bush from a base ccamp on the aGleen Alleen hwy. I went to ttownn once a year for supplies foor one day of shopping. I do not suffer from the herd syndrome like most insecure people. Don't like to go to town cause they have people there. My nearest neughbor was over 30 miles from me. I felt a little crowded. One year I saw three people !!! Grrrr the need fir other people is a weakness. Insecure peoople get lonely. I like my solitude. Humans just aggrevate me. Especially green horns. Humans. Are not built to congregate. Growing up i was lucky enough to live in the countryside, in a little village in england. Our house was on the edge of the village, so that meant, miles and miles of green fields, trees and a river to explore and play in!
    I loved it.
I would tell my parents, i was sleeping at a friend's house, but in reality, i had built a shelter, and slept in that!!
I was quite an outdoor person until serious back problems, resulting in surgery, that now greatly limits wat i can do.
But i do bits n bobs, here n there still.
Still long for the green of nature, the sweetness of pollen on the air.
Its surprising how little we actually need to be happy.
Tech makes our life easier, but not better.
These big companies convince us we need their latest technology, but we dont, not really!
I cant live the wild life properly, but i keep having tasters. I love these kind of videos, i live my outdoor life, vicariously through others, and its better than nothing!!

I gave up my apartment that I didn't like at all. I'm starting with a cheap tent, a sleeping bag and a back pack. 8 days to go...and all my senses are heightened and heart id beating faster and I feel more alive. when I was 12 my family of (then) 11 moved into a tent about this size in a small community in the mountains. we had no electricity or running water and cooked in an outdoor kitchen. we later setup a rainwater collection system and had it uphill for natural water pressure. it was rough, for sure, but I'll never forget those days roaming the forest and living off the land. the coyotes would come down the river at night and circle our camps and I'd go on long walks with my dog dreaming about what native Americans once roamed those same cliffs. If things got too bad we could always run to sheetz which was actually only a few miles away for a nice cup of coffee. lol

I lived in a school bus without power for 2 yrs then a tent for 18 months. On the back 40acres of an equine rescue ranch in the inland Pacific northwest, here in the states. It was amazing experience but not for everyone. I met quite a few others who lived like this back then. It is a lonely life. Theres a certain look about the eyes that I recognize on this gentleman. Not loneliness so much, more like an inner calmness.
What a beautiful location, wish I could have had a tent like this. I remember staying with friends when sick and figuring out refrigeration and preferring to sleep instead of feeding the fire.
The value and specialness of human interaction becomes more obvious and the magic of solitude also.

I absolutely love the way that you live. I am so jealous 🙂. This lifestyle has been my dream for as long as I can remember but don't really know how to get started. I have a lot of anxiety when I have to go out and be around a lot of people so I also stay at home and play on my guitar. Having a dog helps so much when you are sad or lonely. My dog is my best friend and when I start to go through depression or anxiety my dog will come up and put his face to my face and loves to give kisses. Playing with him and exercising him also helps me mentally. God bless you.
