  • Quick video tutorial demonstrating how to clean a throttle body assembly and butterfly plate on a 2nd generation Acura 1.7 EL or 7th generation Honda Civic (Model years 2001-2005).
    A dirty throttle body and butterfly plate assembly will lead to diminished throttle response and possibly lower fuel economy and performance. Dirty throttle plates are typically caused by blowby caused either from normal engine operation or from engines that have worn rings or valve guides. The residues left on and in between the throttle body throat and plate consist of mostly carbon and spent oil deposits.
    This quick DIY shows how easy it is to perform using an old toothbrush and a can of throttle body (NOT carburetor) cleaner that can be purchased from any auto parts store.
    Be aware that during the cleaning process that the engine should be allowed to cool for at least 15 minutes prior to starting the cleaning process. After the cleaning is complete the vehicle will be difficult to start due to the spray residues going into the motor. It will act as if the engine is "flooded". To clear this condition simply crank the engine for longer than usual 5-7 seconds no more than 3 times in a row and if the car still won't start then press the gas pedal to the floor during cranking and as the engine turns over release the gas pedal. You don't want to over rev the engine and damage it.
    Once the engine starts it will run rough for probably a few minutes and you may even make the check engine light come on. Not to fret as the engine has warmed up and is idling smoothly you can reset the "check engine" light by using an OBD-II scan tool to reset the ECU or you can disconnect the negative battery terminal for a few minutes to clear the code. If you have to disconnect the battery to reset the check engine light be prepared and have your factory radio lock code handy as you will need to enter the code upon re-connecting and powering up your Honda radio.
    This procedure should be performed every 50, 000 kms or about every 30, 000 miles to ensure your engine is running at it's best.

    Perfect video man. This was so much easier than removing the throttle body completely and I’m sure would net a similar result. I did it the hard way and it sucked on a cold Minnesota day.

    I have a 2003 Honda Civic EX that idles rough and almost stalls for like 30 seconds after the engine cooled down from a previous drive. But once it is fully warmed up there are no idle issues. Will cleaning the throttle body fix this?

    looking at the battery it would be the black wire on the battery marked with a minus (-) sign. Whenever you're working with anything related to gasoline or electrical work always disconnect the battery for the sake of safety. This is ESPECIALLY true if you're new to fixing cars. Better safe than sorry.

      You likely have a work engine mount that is allowing vibrations to run through the chassis. Give them a close inspection to look for cracks and splits and general deterioration.

    great DIY! thanks was curious how to do this... I plan on also cleaning my MAF while I'm doing this as I read its also good to do for maintenance. I read that it's good to replace o2 sensors upstream and downstream also to increase mpg, my car just rolled over 100k (08 civic si) and I have never done anything with the o2 sensors, should they be replaced? or only do if causing a problem?

    • @piercedasian
      @piercedasian  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Gary, glad you liked the video. Just remember when you clean your MAF that you use cleaning sprays that are safe for MAF sensors as using the wrong cleaner can ruin the sensor costing you big $$ to replace. As for the O2 sensors don't bother replacing them unless you notice a decrease in fuel mileage or vehicle performance. Honda O2 sensors are very high quality and my civic is going on 500, 000 km on the original sensors and I still get 40+MPG on the highway. Only when you really notice a drivability issue should you be really concerned. Some argue that part of a large tune up in a modern car requires that you replace the sensors. I disagree. If it ain't broke don't touch it. IF you do decide to replace the sensors ONLY use NGK sensors or the factory Honda ones. Using Bosch sensors for example can sometimes do weird things to the car (first hand experience).
      Hope that helps.

      piercedasian Hey dude, cleaned the MAF (using MAF cleaner) and throttle body (using throttle body cleaner) today, everything went smoothly BUT I am noticing my car is having a little longer than usual rev hang. Any ideas? When cleaning the throttle body I didn't spray it in, I just sprayed some of the cleaner on a microfiber towel and rubbed all the carbon off that way. Good to know...I used NGK spark plugs also w/o issue.

    • @piercedasian
      @piercedasian  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      @ gary martins - ah yes, your throttle body is now flowing differently than before you cleaned it. Relatively easy fix. Disconnect the negative terminal on your battery for about a minute and then reconnect it and start the car with the parking brake engaged and ALL electrical accessories off. No radio, no a/c no headlights. Let the car "relearn" the idle. Once the radiator fans have come one twice while idling then the relearn is complete. I advise you do this on a car that was just driven and already warmed up so you're not sitting there for a long time for the rad fans to kick in after the reconnection of power.
      Hope that helps!

    was not it better to remove the tb and then clean it to avoid engine starting problem and to better clean?

    • @piercedasian
      @piercedasian  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      you could that but I'm not sure if the TB would be any cleaner than doing the way I've demonstrated. Combing the fact that you'd have to buy a new TB gasket and disconnect a bunch of things to get it off. Seems like a lot of work for marginal gains in "cleanliness".

    Hello sir, i would just to like to know your thoughts about using fully synthetic oil on the honda civic 7th generation... would you recommend it? if yes, can i you use any brand as long as its fully synthetic? will it significantly improve the power of the engine.... thanks in advance...

    • @piercedasian
      @piercedasian  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Synthetic doesn't necessarily give you more power per se but protects better under extreme operating conditions than conventional. I use synthetic in everything right down to my lawnmowers because it simply is a better oil. I like to use Castrol Syntec oil but I've also used Mobil 1 and Pennzoil Platinum synthetics with great success. IF you're going to go to synthetics I would STICK with synthetics and not switch back and forth.

    • @piercedasian
      @piercedasian  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Honestly, the best thing you can do it alway always always, change the fluids in the car at regular intervals. Check the engine oil regularly and never let it run low, fix things the moment they show signs of wear or improper operation and keep the car's chassis and interior clean. My wife backed my Toyota truck into the side of her 7th gen and completely ruined the passenger side doors and I went to the wreckers and found doors that were the exact color as hers and in better shape and fixed her car in less than 3 hours. Went from write off to looking like nothing happened. These cars are very versatile, easy to fix, cheap to fix and cheap to run. Going on 312, 000kms on her car right now and that's all I've done to it.. fluid changes and regular maintenance and washing it frequently to keep rust away.

    • @jakethelion6664
      @jakethelion6664 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sir, thanks again for your advice, i will definitely follow it. my civic is currently less than 220kms. and its fun to drive. I recently replace the automatic transmission with a surplus from japan and it feels good as new... I will change the oil this month to synthetic and maybe change the transmission fluid. Sir what frequency do you recommend when replacing atf ?

  • @chriskaprys
    @chriskaprys ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Where does all that loosened buildup end up after it’s been dislodged? On a different car, someone recommended that this be done right before you’re changing your oil filter. Is that where the gunk ends up? I’m surprised it doesn’t clog up the oxygen sensor on its way through the system.

    • @piercedasian
      @piercedasian  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      it usually gets burned off and while doing it before an oil change probably isn't a bad idea that in the end MOST of the crap that gets scrubbed off burned off and not much makes it into the oil (unless your motor is SUPER worn out). The carbon buildup isn't a lot so I would just clean annually and not worry too much about it.

      you're most welcome. Before you dismiss the carb cleaner take a look at the can and see if it says catalytic converter and o2 sensor safe. if it safe for them then it is OK to use on your mother's car. I just know some carb cleaners are VERY strong (they do clean really good) and can in rare instances cause issues with a modern car's emission control system components. I always say use throttle body cleaner because you're better safe than sorry.

      +jesse diaz CNG civic?! way cool. We don't have those here in Canada. Throttle body removal is totally not necessary for 99% of cars on the road. The only time that is required is if the car was so badly neglected and abused and run without an air filter in dusty conditions. Throttle bodies for the most part are just vacuum passages and a butterfly plate. Vacuum passages don't typically clog if a car is reasonably maintained.

    • @piercedasian
      @piercedasian  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you look at my IAC valve replacement video you can see exactly how I removed it and like Miguel Bautista has indicated, you can use a throttle body cleaning spray to clean out the junk in the IAC valve and the bores in the throttle body to get your idle control to be more precise.

  • @piercedasian
    @piercedasian  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    as long as the engine isn't hot and you don't go crazy spraying too much in to the point of flooding the motor with a LOT of cleaner. Moderation is key and no it won't damage sensors if you buy throttle body specific cleaner. DO NOT buy carb cleaner but throttle body cleaner that is safe for oxygen sensors and catalytic converters.

      +Carlos Sosa Drive your car until it is fully warmed up (probably give it a good 10 miles of driving). Shut engine off, shut hvac controls to off, apply parking brake, headlights and radio off. Pop the hood and in the fuse box remove the "7.5A backup fuse) for 10 seconds. Put the fuse back in, star the car and let it idle until the cooling fans have come on at least 2 times.
      Your ECU should then be reprogrammed and the performance should come back.

      are you sure your throttle cable is no hooked on anything and that the throttle mechanism is moving freely?
      Have you tried disconnecting the negative terminal on your car and then reattaching it and then letting it idle for 15 minutes in your driveway to allow the cleaned throttle body relearn the proper idle speed? I've done this so many times I've lost count and I've never encountered what you're describing.

      continue to crank the engine (in 15 second intervals) until it starts. Each 15 second crank let the start cool off for several minutes and retry. Make sure your car battery has sufficient charge to give the starter and enough enough power to crank nice and strong and it will start.

    • @piercedasian
      @piercedasian  ปีที่แล้ว

      you may need to do an idle relearn. To do this: Drive car to bring the car up to operating temperature. Park car, turn off headlights, apply parking brake, turn radio and heater/a/c and any other electrical load off. Disconnect the negative terminal from the car for 5 minutes, reconnect battery, start car and let it idle until the radiator fan cycles on and off at least 2x. This will reset the baseline idle parameters and your car should run smoothly from that point forward. Its idling higher b/c after a cleaning the air passages in the throttle bottle are probably cleared up and letting more air in than it is accustomed to seeing prior to cleaning. Doing the idle relearn procedure helps establishing the baseline.
