- How to clean a throttle body on 7th Gen Civic.
Tools required:
10 MM socket
philips screw driver
flat screw drivier
needle nose pliers
carb cleaner
q tips
rags
may help to have an impact driver
- I am not very car savy over all but this project was rather easy; just time consuming. Make sure you take your time and don't rush and I'm sure all skill levels can do it.
give me a thumbs up if you like!! or a thumbs down if you don't! cheers. - ยานยนต์และพาหนะ
I’ve had my 03 civic for 11 years now and there’s not enough good maintenance content like this on TH-cam for the seventh generation civics. Thanks!
Mike G thanķs man!
Check.out my channel I own a 7th gen ✌
Now it's 14 years old

Most detailed video I've seen yet. Very professional. Thank you so much! Needed these instructions very much!
FINALLY THE SAME YEAR AS MY VEHICLE & THE ENGINE IS IDENTICAL......GOOD JOB BOYZ
Without your video is have been lost, thank you for posting. Very informative
Thanks. This helped me with my 2003 honda civic.
Good job! FYI: The unknown part attached to the throttle body is the Canister Purge Solenoid Valve which is part of the EVAP system. Make sure you securely re-attach the two hoses to avoid a EVAP code error.
thanks Peter did mine today couldn't have done it without your help
Thanks guys for this video, it s very helpful. I did the same work but my Honda Civic accelerate by her self!
Awesome video... Just in time since I got my new throttle body in today! Thanks
Thanks Bro i have same Engine in 1.3 CC for Honda City 2003 Model. Thanks for making Video for Old Honda Civic it really helps. Many people in word have these cars and want see these related videos. Today i also Cleaned my Honda Sensors and everything and its like smooth car again. Throtel body Cleaning job was done last month but did clenaing of Air Sensor and other things helped me to gain car speed and Idle problems is resolved now. please do make more vidoes for this model. it helps alot. Love from Pakistan

Thanks for the video, man!
😅
If it is not broken why replace/change
I Love when Cars Ware Simple
Great video dude. Just keep it
Thanks for the video buddy
Informative, helps a lot
Very helpful thank you so much.
Good job thanx for the video
Very good video bro :D
So, was your car idling bad, before you cleaned the IAC valve and throttle body? And did it fix the issue?
Great help! Thanks
Awesome video thank you so much.
My car has started jerking and I don't know if it the throttle that needs cleaning out but could it be the spark plugs need changing ? I don't have the tools to check all this so will take it to mechanic....just hope he doesn't rip me off. Honda 2002 model
Very helpful! Looked like a pain when I first opened the hood. Thanks.
very informative thanks
Good video...thanks
I did the same procedure but can't get my two throttle cables back on, any tips on how?
Got the car in my garage doing a head gasket job, having trouble pulling intake manifold out of car (just left it in there and pulled cylinder head -_-) and I am worried about the fuel line on the right side of the throttle body (if that is what it is). I did not relieve fuel pressure but can I still just pull it off?
The Same Problem I'm facing toyota camry 2007, have you fixed it.?
Sup guys, I recently did that cleaning idle on a honda crv 01 but I saw a video the that car has a fast idle too, I fix that and it run good now.. I own a Honda civic 05 ex myself, do they have the fast idle too or not..? Thx.
TPS sensor is removable, you just have to make slots in the bolt /screw heads (i used a dremel) and use a screwdriver to unscrew them. Once it is loose, it is adjustable so you can set/adjust it to its proper spot (.5 closed, 4.5 open)...or you can just replace it. Also, dont use "Carb cleaner"...use throttle body cleaner.
To clean the IAC valve (after emptying two cans of throttle body cleaner and using blue towels, Q-tips, and even a wire brush), I tried Super Clean degreaser--the foaming kind--with pipe cleaners--a small, flexible wire with cloth bristles. I was able to get them in the valve's smaller and tighter places and got a lot more carbon deposits out. I throughly wiped the degreaser off and didn't let it dry. (Obviously, I wouldn't try this with the throttle body and IAC still attache to the engine.)
You can order pipe cleaners for a few bucks from any online cigar and pipe retailer.
My 2002 lx have random acceleration lag, do you think this might help? I'll tackle this anyways but I want to know a head
I recently purchased my civic type s 2.0 2003 and its mis firing when it reaches 3000rpm. Do you reckon if I carried out the throttle body cleanse that this would fix my mis fire?
Any ideas for new headers for my 03 civic ex
Thank for this video, gotta change my IAC valve. This makes it easy.
cndvd awesome! I'm glad it helped.
Thank You very much man. :)
I just cleaned my 2003 civic yesterday and it was much worse than you
I will see today if it really helps my problem
Unfortunately, this didn't help my problem :(
When I have the air condition (A/C) on and when I start to push on the pedal
the pedal almost get stuck for couple seconds and then it starts to move
probably your throttle cable
lube yiur tb cable.the accelerator
OK, see that Idle Air Control sensor on 6:20? Well, cleaning it the way it is shown in the video isn't always enough.
Take out the screws that connect plastic part with aluminum part, and then separate two pieces from each other (there's a magnet that holds them together). REMEMBER ORIGINAL POSITION OF EVERY PIECE BEFORE YOU START TOUCHING ANYTHING ELSE so you can put everything together without any issues. There will be a steel shaft inside with magnet attached to it. Try to spin it, and you will realize that it is not moving freely because of carbon deposits. To fix it, spray some throttle body cleaner inside the two holes that are shown at 6:20 in the video, and spin the shaft until it starts moving freely. Once done, let it dry, and put everything together. I've done it to my father's 2001 civic, and fixed the "car dying" problem. P.S. You will have to modify those screws to work with flat screwdriver. New ones can be purchased at Menards or a bicycle shop. Everything is metric. Do the work at your own risk, I take no responsibility.
I'm not a car mechanic, and every time I need to fix something on a car, I watch a whole bunch of youtube videos. Just like you guys. As far as I know, replacing a gasket is always a good idea.
Awesome video, will be doing this exact job in a few days. Any chance you can do a heater core flush on this exact car…?? Great job.
Can you provide some information about the stock throttle body diameter ? Would a 68 mm fit it ?
Which fuse did you remove?
thanks alot man! video helped me save some bucks nd solved my rpm issues. ALLAH bless you!
Mine has stuck screws for the air filter, I hope taking the whole thing off like your video will make it easier to get them out.
Hi I have nissan Tiida (Versa) Recently changed spark plugs and macanic cleans throatal with WD-40 but now the problem is my RPM goes up & down what is the actual problem please help me
Brother Honda civic 2000 model I'm On AC After Einghin Vibrating And No Cach EXsilator Plz Tell Me What problem
Recently bought an 05 Civic with neglect issues. Removing the throttle body is too much work for the moment. I sprayed down the body throat & plate while changing the air filter. Looks like new down the throat & runs even smoother now.
IS THERE A EAZY WZY TOO HOOK UP COLD AIR INTAKE OR A FILTER CONE ....INSTEAD OF PUTTING BACK THE ASTHMA FILTER BOX
Be careful if you get cleaner on that coated part by the butterfly fly valve it could remove some of it and your car will think the iac is broken
Do you mean that that black outline?
i liked it
THANK YOU
"I like to live on the edge". I like you, you're funny. No reason why you didn't want to replace the gasket, you just didn't
Thank you
hi, this Vedic indeed very useful, but can you please show a vedio where those hose pipes connected with each other. it will be more informative. like right side 2 pipes where connection ends on back side of the engine?
Great video! I tried this as I have an egr problem and replacing that didn't solve the problem. Now instead of almost stalling at stop lights my idle in park revs up from 1.5k to 2.5k, drops, and repeats. It's also got some weird engine surging now... Guess I gotta take it in.
Is your problum fixed?
@@syedsalmanmajid6742 Ended up needing to take it in to have it cleaned. Was too caked in there I guess
got civic s type starts and drives but cuts out wen hot eney help don't think fans come on
Sir,cleaning of iac will make your idle in good range? thank you for response..
Bet you forgot about this comment
Carb cleaner can damage your tb. Use proper throttle body cleaner.
Kelsey Iafrate hi so can i used like maf sensor cleaner or spray
Yes. But it may not cut the gunk as well.
Kelsey Iafrate that’s right - carb cleaner is harsher
Hello, I would like to know what is the fuse to remove and it serves what thank you !
The fuse will make no difference as you already unplugged the minus pole, just put all plugs back before reatatching the minus pole
I have 2010 8th gen civic if I take the throttle body off do i have to do a relearn once I'm done??
Rocky Miner thanks bro I appreciate it
Slides off like a baby? Not sure how I feel about that. lol good vid thx
rofl i was thinking that too when i heard it. But i've heard people from other regions and generations use weird sayings before so maybe it's just that lmao
That sensor you disconnected but didn't knew what it was is the canister purge solenoid valve.
Ones a throttle cable. And ones a transmission cable (kick down cable) im pretty sure. I start my car it idles up and pukes down , the udles up again. Its an 04. 1.7. Engine light is on. Im pretty sure its either the mass air flow sensor or just a shitty gunked up throttle body. Replaced the plugs and ignition coils (in the middle of winter) and i think this is what it needs. Its also the reason why i only run 91 octane in it because of this reason. But at 150k i guess the damage is already done.
What happens if you didn't disconnect the battery and now there's a short??
Check your fuse box should take care of the problem!
is there a diffrence between a throttle body and carburetor. and where is the carburetor on this car
Nicolas Rosario there isnt one its fuel injected
why we need to clean this part? what benefit we get after cleaning like you/he did?
it is clean or not the air is still going Inside the engine. if it was dirty and blocking the air then i understand but it is just burned black on the corners this doesn't block the air to go Inside. i still didn't got it
i dont think the dirty he throtle he s showing is really dirty for me what i think, it is just burned on side, when we open the oxygen go in anyways. thanks anyways
Gulzar Hussain The main concern is the throttle plate. When carbon builds up on the circumference of it, the plate cannot fully close anymore, until it is cleaned. Either the pcm will learn the new values and trim fuel/spark curve to compensate, thereby having a negative impact on engine performance, or the computer will "throw a code" and revert to "limp mode" which greatly affect performance. Preventative maintenance is oftentimes less expensive/hassle than an outright repair.
Can I clean the throttle body without removing it using spray?
live and let live yes
Depends if the IAC unit is fused and cant roll due to fouling. As he showed in the video you have to disassemble the IAC spray with cleaner until the unit can move again. You should be able to twirl with 2 fingers.

How you take the throttle cable off
02:26
lovely
great video
i relay like it
My gas pedal is kind of sticky or has some static friction. I think my throttle body is gunky.
My 99 Civic had the same problem. When I did the throttle body cleaning, I also lubed the inside of the throttle cable housing.
Could i just spray with throttle body still attached? Would take 1/4 of the effort of taking it off.
Not really sure!
@@piotrpete Well i can answer cause i already did it LOL!. Yes you can. Take the top of the engine filter off and you have direct access to the throttle body. Saved my time x3 lol. Sadly didnt fix my idle surge issue, thinking air leak. But it least my throttle body is cleaned.
@@DiamondScuff sweet! Good suggestion!
also how is it some hondas have 4 throttle bodies and mines only have 1.
i kno😰😰 im askin stupid questions. i just would like to kno
Alright thanks for not making fun of me im new to this
Topped 100k views! Thanks everyone!
Peter why did you do a throttle body cleaning? Do I have to check mine or I shouldn't touch it?
Hey. I honestly don't remember why I did it. It was many years ago. I think it was more of a make do project more than anything else.
For this car the normal idle speed is at at 750t50 rpm.
If the idle speed is below 700 or above 800, at normal operating temperature, cleaning TB & IAC valve could solve the issue.
The throttle positioning sensor can be removed and replaced just have to kind of know what you're doing and it's not that hard to replace

Why does my Honda Civic fire from Umbrella valve no friend, coils and spark plugs are all good, then the current from the socket to the coil is good, everyone, please enlighten me, friend🙏🙏🙏
How much more vtec do you gain from doing this?
dannyboy768 between 15 and 20 vtecs
Lmao
Add any stickers to make it official??
Nothing vtec is sort of a supercharger it just opens the intake valves using larger prongs on the camshaft
live and let live it adds VTECS!!!!!!
"Can't change the TPS sensor you have to change the whole throttle body" great video but sort of some false info. Snip the bolts off it and a new one comes with new bolts to put in. Crucial for someone that doesn't have the money to buy a whole new throttle body. Also not necessary to take the throttle body off to clean it really.
i think my car have the same problem and is the same year 2002 because RPM go up and down sometime and died on the road
did you clean it an did it fix the problem? i have the same issue and want to know if this would fix my problem.
actually nice ... but you DID NOT SHOW THE CLEANING ACT OF THE MENTIONED DEVICE.
Is this really necessary?
Very few things in life are necessary.
Can't you just clean the TB without removing it?
Yea, you could but it is more likely to get damaged and it wouldn't be as effective as removing it.
I cleaned my TB without removing it and now I have problem with bouncing revs on idle. The best way is to this like on the movie!
Vrrrrrrrrrrruuuuuuuuum, poo,pop,pop,pop!
Dude!!! Did you just say safety googles
What's wrong with just removing the air filter and spraying TB cleaner directly on the throttle plate? Won't the TB cleaner enter the bypass and therefore clean the IAC if the engine is running . No? I've done it for years on my 6th and 7th gens. never had to clean out an IAC ever. Never had idle issues; or damaged a TB with TB cleaner?? Hell no! Not on civics anyways I've seen people pour water in there!!! And it actually works quite fine.
I understand your fussy about your IAC being clean but geeeees, I hope it was needed cause you almost took out the whole intake for *IMO* nothing. Just wondering.
Was wondering the same if I can just spray it in and the engine will just burn it out eventually
Wonder when those loose gunk stuck at the MAP or MAF sensors, which is down stream of the throttle body?
Fail.Turn it on
What in the hell is the point of this work!?! Were you just bored and had nothing to do? I don't see how this will improve performance one tiny bit! Pointless absolutely pointless!!
You know how it is Jay! Sometimes it's enjoyable to do things just for the sake of doing them.
It's absolutely garbage car.
