    I used to sew tons in my younger days and then just stopped. Clothing was so inexpensive to buy and my time was limited. I have been thinking about getting into quilting. My great aunt Tildy made me a beautiful quilt when I was young, I still have it. I want to make some for my great nieces and nephew now! It is a great heritage to pass down from generation to generation plus it keeps you warm!

    Every time you do corners like that, like on flying geese and stuff, I hope that you will also stitch 1/2" away from the first stitching line. That way you'd get a boatload of tiny half-square-triangles that you could use as a border, or a decoration on the backing, or just toss in a scraps bin for another project... and there would be absolutely no waste! :D

      I think Jordan Fabrics spends all their time & resources to make these free videos with the hopes that watchers will buy the fabrics (& patterns when applicable) from their online store. But I’ll bet there are “scraps” tutorials available on other TH-cam channels, where perhaps they don’t have anything to sell and just want people to watch their videos (so they can earn advertising revenue).

      I have a shoulder issue and can't use a rotary cutter and ruler long enough to cut the pieces for a quilt. I also collect scrap fabrics from our local quilt club. Back about 2014 I bought a Big Shot Pro machine and now I use dies from Blue Wren of A1 Craft and Quilting. They have the die to cut the pieces for this quilt. It is really fast to stack up six layers of scrap fabric and run it through the machine. The die specific for this quilt pattern has the smaller triangle and the larger sideways hexagon on it so you don't have to draw lines on squares to make triangles. It also saves fabric to use that technique instead of cutting off the side of the square to make the triangle. You make triangles first then just sew them on the larger piece.

    What a fabulous work space she has! I can't see myself juggling with cutting and measuring all the fabric on my dining-room table, and running upstairs to use the ironing board in my spare bedroom, and then back to the table to sew it all together. I just look at these videos in awe and envy!

    • @melindaostergren8115
      @melindaostergren8115 ปีที่แล้ว

      I understand what you’re saying! After years and years of quilting I finally have my dream sewing room. But I still don’t have an ironing board. I have a gray wool mat and one of those small gizmos with a cutting board on one side and an ironing surface on the other side.
      To be fair, I’m now just trying some bc smaller lengths of fabric; at my stage it n life I just don’t want to make large quilts anymore. But maybe if you still have a lot of fabric you could iron it then cut, sew, and do the finer ironing on a smaller portable pad?

    • @katescarratt4267
      @katescarratt4267 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn't even know portable ironing pads existed! Nor gizmos with a cutting board on one side and an ironing pad on the other. I've never actually made a quilt, but I'm a bit like a kid pressing her nose against the sweetshop window and wondering how to get at the goodies.
