  • Had a great weekend burning fuel over Georgia in the late summer. Put a few more hours on my home built Legal Eagle (up to 19 hrs. TT). The hay was a little tall, but it didn't hold us back.

    I have the honor of living a few miles from Mr. Milholland. He is a pretty awesome and humble man. Mid 90s and still flying his eagles. Great video. Thank you.

    Hello, question: What wing profile does the Legal Eagle use in all its versions? I understand that it is a single profile. I know it is a NACA but I would be missing the Number. Thank you very much.

    I like the push pull set up you have. What length are your cables? Just getting ready to cover my wings.

    • @leirbaggage
      @leirbaggage  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe they were 118 inches, but don't hold me to that. I'd have to look it up. They are 3/16" from ac spruce.

  • @mrbillmartin7181
    @mrbillmartin7181 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    What instruments are you using? Also, are you using a throttle cable for the ailerons?

    • @leirbaggage
      @leirbaggage  6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      From left to right my instruments are: Oil Pressure, Belite Altimeter / Air Speed, Altimeter (currently inop), Slip Indicator (bottom, level indicator from a RV), Tachometer (Tiny Tach), and Oil Temp. I will probably get rid of everything except oil pressure, tach and maybe add a dual EGT gauge; for simplicity. I am using push/pull cables (3/16th inch) from Air Craft Spruce for aileron control.

    Very cool, plan to start building one of these myself, still learning, got a long way to go, I jjoined Facebook group, i tried to join eagles nest but several days and not received a confirmation email, I want to build myself, but let my wife do wing ribs, she is better with wood than me, but I am great with steel and welding.

    What size engine is yours? looking to build one here in NV, but our flying field is up there at 5100'. not sure if i need the 45HP Hummel.
    great vid. Thanks.

    • @gabrielbarnhart
      @gabrielbarnhart 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is a 37 hp Casler built engine.

    • @gabrielbarnhart
      @gabrielbarnhart 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would ask around on the eaglersnest forum to see what higher altitude guys are using. I assume you'd need the 45.

  • @n5527n
    @n5527n 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    It looks like there's hardly any break in the stalls it just mushes a little and all you do is let the nose drop and pick the airspeed back up. The first one at :22 it looked like you were hunting for a bite on the wing you were dropping but it didn't want to spin. The only real stalls were departure beginning at 1:14 and the wing dropped to the right but even after you put your foot and leg out to induce drag it didn't even want to bite at 25 or 30 degrees. I know Joe Spencer beefed Put Put up and has done spins.. have you? and how was recovery? I am most interested in how it behaves if you flare a little high .. can the gear handle the thump?

    • @leirbaggage
      @leirbaggage  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The break is very mild. I can hold the stick all the way back and walk it down with the rudder very easily; like a falling leaf. I need to calculate that rate of decent. I haven't done any spins, nor plan to. But I'm confident it would be a non-issue. I let my leading edge plywood wrap around into gussets over my ribs. (not sure what Joe did) I'll put the cross jury struts on eventually. The gear is a weakness. I went with thicker tubing (.049) than the plans called for and still bent the top strut (in compression) a few weeks ago. It needs a longer travel, heavier springs or bigger tires. 😉

  • @laengineer8546
    @laengineer8546 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Mind if I ask how long it took you to build? I'm jealous but I know you earned it as a home-builder!

    • @leirbaggage
      @leirbaggage  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not at all. It took me around 3 years off and on, evenings and weekends. It can be done much faster if you can dedicate time to it and stick to the plans. If you watch the online communities closely you can pick up partially finished kits that will save you time.

      So awesome. I don't know a lot about the future, but I know an ultralight is in mine!

  • @alexhicks8594
    @alexhicks8594 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Awesome build. Have you tried transporting it? I'm looking to build this model but not sure how I could fit it in a trailer for day trips. I've heard removing the wings is a bit of a nightmare.

    • @gabrielbarnhart
      @gabrielbarnhart 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Alex Hicks - Thanks man. I transported it long distance one time. It wasn't too hard taking off the wings and putting them back on, but I wouldn't want to do it everytime I wanted to fly. Took me about an hour. I used push/pull cables for the ailerons so that simplifies it.

    • @alexhicks8594
      @alexhicks8594 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Gabriel Barnhart Awesome info thanks! Do you know what your empty weight is? I'm wondering how much leeway I'll have for pt 103

    • @leirbaggage
      @leirbaggage  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Alex Hicks -There's basically no leeway with the plans if you want to hit 254 lbs. You have to save weight everywhere. Every gram adds up. I'm very close to legal weight, but my seat is a little beefy.

    Looks a fantastic lil acft. I’ve been thinking about this one. Your vid was great for some perspective. What I found disturbing though is the lack of overhead visibility. Flying blind when making turns.

      leirbaggage - Thanks for your reply! I guess it was a stupid question but I'm new to ultralight planes and knows very little. I should have known better but it is amazing what some people install in their aircrafts. Thanks again!

      Touhid Md This engine is rated at 37 hp and burns regular octane gasoline. It likes to run 2600-3200 rpms. It is a vw car engine modified to 2 cylinders.
