I use the crates as decoration around my dock. Adds a bit to the immersion of gameplay, plus it's "free" storage that you can move wherever you want it.
The other thing ive seen with the boxes is that they basically have no weight physic, so they dont make your boat ride like you're popping a wheelie all the way home like the cart can do.
Your videos are the only Valheim tutorials I follow, you always have the most efficient way to do things and/or tricks to making things simpler down the road. I also appreciate the in depth explanations as it allows even the newest of players to follow along. Anyone who is mad about how long/in depth a guide video is needs to spread their toxicity elsewhere lol

So, if I cast eikthir's power, my nearby friend gains the effect as well. You may have already covered that, but if not, your viewers may get something out of that tip in multiplayer games. The problem with this is that the boxes are fragile and can't be repaired. On the ocean, big waves damage boxes. Sailing near rocks that don't even touch the ship will damage the boxes. Waves moves the boxes, they damage each other and get damaged by the boat. Sea serpent attacks will probably 1-or-2-shot crates. When these boxes break, your ore goes staight to the bottom of the ocean. You're better off loading the whole cart. Speaking of carts, I once loaded 9 carts of silver on a Longship. It took about 1h to move the distance of a 15s run on land. Limit yourself to about 4 carts on a Longship, maybe 5, but never more. You also need to balance the carts, as well as the boxes. Moving carts is easy, as is repairing. The crates take damage trying to move to balance ship, and most often will just break at the dock or shortly out to rough seas.
@Petra I farmed a ton of iron and hauled it back to my main base, followed this method and about halfway through sailing back the game crashed and my save file was corrupted. Restored the file only to spawn with nothing in the middle of no where. Luckily I had a backup from the day before. Probably a console issue (I'm an Xbox peasant)
@@BrentDnD Yes. It floats but if falls through the boat which is frustrating when recovering it as the boat may now be on the floating grave blocking it.
^^ There is a better solution! Build a cart on a dock plank above the ship, then destroy the dock plank. The cart is then on your ship and you can drive around with the ship. Did you Kill The Ship you Kill The Cart to and the Boxes Float on Top of the Sea. with a new Empty Cart you can Place the Boxes into a new Ship back and Rescue your Cargo. With the trick, when the ship is destroyed, there are only as many boxes on the water as there are cargo in the cart divided by 4 (each box has 4 spaces). If there are only 4 items in the cart, you only have to save 1 box and not 3 as here. In addition, there must be no placeholder items in the cart!
will both throw the cargo off but worse if it throws the cargo up and It lands on the ship it will do over 10 damage to the cargo and going thru a storm can break your box on the ship. contents will fall thru the ship and unless they float will be lost to the ocean forever.
Would be cool if they added a feature if you could pick up cargo boxes and be able to tie into ships and cart, and carry around into your main base once you docked.
does the weight of the boxes when fully loaded with say ore or stone affect the boat? the first thing i did in this game was run a cart onto it, but sailing back from a mining mission my boat was on one heck of a wonky angle an it was hard to sail, i was concerned my cart was gona roll off and have never done it since
Apparantly the boxes doesn't take the weight of the items inside into consideration. However, the cart does. So with a cart your boat might be slower and more unstable. With the boxes it won't matter. I know it's late, but y'know.. If someone else stumbles upon this
You can use carts on the larger boat, just bring the handles close to the mast so they can't move too much and then push the cart from behind up against the mast. Then build wooden floor and stairs into the boat to take the cart out when you get to your destination. It pushes the boat down a bit but you can delete the stairs when you're done.
I really hope they eventually come out with a ship customising feature. I don't need anything as grand as the raft mod, just the ability to add chests and decorate some.

Easier, yes. But it takes it from an in game immersion to a obviously not in game trick. Making crates is at least plausible in game, the other is magic or unreality if you know what I mean... from the perspective of your game character anyway, not you personally. That may not matter but it does to some people. *shrug*
I like just pushing my whole cart in the front. Less work and I don't have to worry about despawning containers. You can actually get another behind the sail, to help balance the boat and increase storage more.
I did that on a longship and it didn't work well 😁 the cart always wanted to drive away when sailing so I had to have it strapped on me while holding the post. It also damages the ship, but not too much. Well and then there is this thing that happened to us...so while holding the cart and the pole, the cart just flipped overboard and me flying along with it. I'm not saying it happens every time though because we haven't tried the second time lol. Feel free to try
That is true, cart can easily fly off the boat. However you can still just push the cart onto the boat, then dismantle it there, instead of pushing boxes around
I just throw the whole cart on the boat. I've noticed while doing this the weight mechanic of the cart (the more weight the cart holds, the shower it goes and gets harder to move) actually transfers to the boat making it easier for serpents to attack you. The weight will also pull your ship down towards where the cart is. My question, does this weight mechanic also apply to these cargo boxes?
No it doesn't. Boxes have like no weight mechanics and you can always push em like they're empty. The same way weight mechanics don't apply to a player, so you can carry another player with thousands of pounds in their inv if they're riding a cart and you'll pull like the cart was empty
I'm used to putting a cart, if you position it right with a bit of a hassle of trial and error, it fits perfectly at the center and I never destroyed my boat because of it, it does little damage sailing in storms long trips, you can travel the map with them unless you like bumping into sea shore rocks But I guess these don't shake as much inside the boat?
You can fit more of them and they seem to only damage when you first put them in. Also they are free and infinite once you have the mats for a single cart.
I've been playing a nomad on a new run. Trying to rush to iron but my huge starter continent doesn't seem to have a swamp. I want to find a nice mistlands and plains border to settle on with a nearby mountain. This makes me wonder if I could push boxes onto other carts. Maybe before filling them and hope the new boxes onces ya do fill them holds them in place. Too bad this isn't a feature but at any rate at least I have a way to get all my loot across the sea. i did this in a longboat and managed to get 50 storage crates on it, really helped transport supplies from my old meadows fort to my new plains fort on the server im on. But i found if you go above speed 1/3, the crates will bash about, so im not sure if it's minor server lag or the speed causing dmg to the crates, but figured i'd share incase anyone else had the same experience. Either way, very fun and hilarious~ (Be nice if they let you just add those crates onto ships, maybe like 1 for the raft, 3 for the kvane and 6 for the longboat)
Thanks really interesting, but I'm still concerned about the weight, weight matter if you load the whole trolley on the ship, does this way avoid the problem? Did you manage to load animals on the ship? I tried and was hilarious, my pigs was jumping off the boat. I have to move my 2star pig's and a massive bridge look like the only way lol
the longship and a lot of patience will do it. Trust me I had a wonderful bacon trip with a friend to get them to the main base, they both fell in the water at some point and mobs tried to kill them all along, but we made it and now meat is no longer a problem
On the one hand it would feel like a cheat except that it's silly that your vikings only know how to build crates when they're part of a cart, so it feels like a way to do a thing you should be allowed to do already (make just a crate).
looks nice. not in place to test right now, but wonder if you put cart on boat and use hammer to deconstruct cart leaving the crates? Or do you have to 'smash' it?
Longship = must have. Even just for hauling more iron back to your base. So much better than using a Karve. Except for the handling. Turns oddly, back end scooting sideways. Easy to bump into rocks, but sturdy so won't matter much.
Hey firespark.. i have seen a bug where my bed is built on a ledge so when i sleep on it, i wake back up standing on the bed.. the problem is if i look down and press e to sleep again, my character does goto sleep and skips a whole day.. have you seen this?
This video could have been so much better. Just say 'hi guys you can increase your ship's storage by breaking a cart full of items and dropping the crates onto your boat!' It didn't need to be 8 minutes long, concision is king.

I have seen our boat being almost submerged into water, with only 1/4 of the sail sticking up. I took screen shot and showed the other person in the boat, but he never saw that. And it wasn't only one time. I guess graphic shows different depending on your setting or gfx.
the other reason is that you can leave them in the boat at all time and just bring your cart to the dock and transfer the items, just leave on item in them and you dont have to rebuild a cart every time
@b barnhouse Cart on the smaller boat is a mess. I have done some testing with carts. They do work but they have weight and they also are not the best in rough water. They also damage the crap out of your ship if they move around too much. They can also cause your ship to go flying off into the sky lol. That only happened to me once but it did happen. Was super funny cause I was just testing things but had I actually been playing I would have raged a bit.
I gave up moving stuff after 150 hours of holding the W key. I just move stuff instantaneously via switching worlds now. If the devs had turn via mouse during autorun, I probably wouldn't have gotten to that point. Also, jump removing autorun...
@@Treshar when you log out of your world and log into another (or vise versa), everything in your bag goes with you. The mechanic seems to be intended, for now. It's beta, so test till your hearts content. Pretty sure when beta ends and the game goes live not only will the price of the game go up but worlds will get reset. I love beta testing, and thus far resetting after beta is inevitable.
I just just fly back with a full inventory of ore when needed so ive never had to deal with these things butwhats stopping you from just dropping the items when your on the boat? im assuming they just fall through? also is it not possible to attach the cart to yourself and bring it on the ship that way? pretty sure ive seen someone do that.
Free items don't collide with entities (boats, creatures, trees, etc). The cart thing does work, but both the boat and cart get damaged while moving so eventually one will explode. Or the cart will jump out.

You could show people how to efficiently cut through a mountain biome with a pickaxe, from my experience it involves building small houses along called break rooms so you can refresh your rested buff and you can repair the pickaxe as you will need to do quite frequently as cutting through a mountain is hard work.
Hmm, never tried something like that. But also, you can't dig tunnels, unless a solid boulder is above you. Even then, it has to be big enough to be supported on the sides. Otherwise it'll drop down to mining level. Unless I'm missing a trick or something?

It's not long winded I try to answer as many questions as I can because not everybody grasps a concept the same. Just go through and read all the comments asking why not just shove cart in boat because I didn't take a sec to explain cart in boat is janky at best. I would have gotten 9000 questions about how do I get them in the boat? I did this and they disappeared on me what am I doing wrong? How is this better than a cart? Are they stable or do they move around like a cart? Do they despawn? How many of them can I put in my boat? Do they damage the boat? And the list goes on and on. So I try to answer all of those questions I cant think of in the video because you have no idea how well each person watching it is going to grasp a concept. Not sure how to make it more simple to understand than that. And if you think you can do better. Have at it. TH-cam is an open platform. As for the quality of my content. My analytics tell me all I need to know and it is very much the opposite of your option. If you don't like it you know where the door is and I suggest you hit that don't recommend this channel button and see yourself out.

@@lowskillcamper This isn't an intended feature though, so in itself could be viewed as an exploit. If you exploit and lose your stuff as a result, it's your fault, shouldn't have tried to exploit. Cheating to get the stuff back is just sad.
@@MalcolmBlk I've lost my world twice thanks to using steam cloud saves between 2 different PCs. So backing up saves come natural to me now. I've never had to restore from a backup though. When I've lost a cart overboard once I just marked it and made additional trips. If it got launched to space though I would have used the backed up save. But in general I find physics in Valheim very stable. Never seen stuff flying around.
@@lowskillcamper Losing progress due to a save error is different to losing stuff because you decided to exploit the game, is it not? Try this box exploit when there're waves... You'll see boxes flying around a breaking. Happened to me just now. But I knew what I was signing up for when I tried to exploit the game, so I'm not cheating in the 4 stacks of iron I lost.
I know if you try to just drop items on the boat, like tossing iron so you can actually jump onto the boat, they normally fall through. I know the boats would look better if they had a chest on the boat, instead of a trap door. Though too many people just use the easy cheats of server hopping and more, not understanding this is for those of us that actually want to play on one server only and play, probably, the way the devs actually intended. Plus take all the time in the world to explain the topic of your videos, maybe people will get bored of parroting and will actually take the hint, lol.
Make a second single player world and load into it, build some chests. Go back to your main single player world, fill your inventory. Go to second world with chests (you'll spawn where you log out) drop off your stuff. Boom, never use a ship or cart in your life to transport. Reverse the process at your main base and grab all your stuff that you cant teleport with or couldn't normally carry.
idk why you would increase your boat storage. if you want to teleport metals move them to a seperate server until you move your main char to the desired spot to transfer the item. Use a mule to be more efficient.
Nah i just use mods, this seems unnecessary complicated und dangerous. Imagine a Sea serpent attacks you or the boat just bugs a few skips and plop hours of farming is gone. I don't like using mods, so i thought i give this video a shot. But nope, the game is already grindy enough whitout the fear of loosing all my stuff to cluncky gamedesing xx.
I got a cart on the Skarve, it's not easy, but you build a ramp and wheel it out over the deck with the handles going to either side of the mast and then destroy the last segment of the ramp so the cart falls onto the boat deck. It does cover up the boat storage, I leave 50 wood and 10 nails in there to build a workbench and another cart, just in case. (Also carry mats to build a portal) I've been in really rough seas with 1500 ore and it's stayed on the boat. It did fall out once when I had the boat too close to shore and was away during a big storm, the boat had washed up and tipped sideways, dumping the cart intact.

build the boat first, drop it in, then build the overhang. Destroying the cart makes it explode, so put walls around the overhang.

I would recommend using walls and roof around the cart so nothing explodes. Also putting some beams to help loading the ship would be nice
If they had more than 4 slots, I’d be tempted to incorporate them into my base somehow. Pretty cool stuff! Always nice to have extra storage.
If it's moddable, someone can make them never despawn so they have to be destroyed, so you can build them as well with 9 units of space or something.

Being able to create crates, move a place them would be a great new feature

Does it work with heavy storms? Carts can destroy your longship while heavy storm is on.

Been watching for a long time now. I don't know what I'd do without your instructional videos.
My brother and I tried the cart on the boat. It glitches the boat out and you risk losing all your stuff.
Do note that the boxes will still get knock off in a storm. The rocky waves will be enough to get some of the boxes falling off the boat.
awesome work! I found its easier to just make stairs leading to the boat in shallow water, just kick the boxes up the stairs and they fall in

I tried and was hilarious, my pigs was jumping off the boat. I have to move my 2star pig's and a massive bridge look like the only way lol
the longship and a lot of patience will do it. Trust me I had a wonderful bacon trip with a friend to get them to the main base, they both fell in the water at some point and mobs tried to kill them all along, but we made it and now meat is no longer a problem
I don't know if you've tried it yet, but strangely the crates do not weigh the ship down like the whole carts do

On the one hand it would feel like a cheat except that it's silly that your vikings only know how to build crates when they're part of a cart, so it feels like a way to do a thing you should be allowed to do already (make just a crate).
looks nice. not in place to test right now, but wonder if you put cart on boat and use hammer to deconstruct cart leaving the crates? Or do you have to 'smash' it?
carts and ships cant be de-hammered, you have to smash them to pieces.

But you need only 1 longship as you can easily teleport it whenever you want.
Longship = must have. Even just for hauling more iron back to your base. So much better than using a Karve. Except for the handling. Turns oddly, back end scooting sideways. Easy to bump into rocks, but sturdy so won't matter much.
Do the boxes have a weight? I know if you balance the carts wrong in the long boat. You gunna have a bad time...

I'm about to move a largish building to a new location. This will be invaluable for moving all of the metal in it.
Don't use this method unless you're fine with losing 4+ stacks of metal when a random wave pushes your boat up and one of the boxes breaks.

I wonder if they do collision damage like trees? You can mass spawn a lot of carts with them and load them into a tower to drop on enemies to see.

Hey firespark.. i have seen a bug where my bed is built on a ledge so when i sleep on it, i wake back up standing on the bed.. the problem is if i look down and press e to sleep again, my character does goto sleep and skips a whole day..

I talk fast to keep the video short people cry. People also cry it's not short enough. I make the video too short people cry I left out to much info. I pack it with tons of details people cry it's to long and I talk to much. So I just do what I want. You like it or don't.

Sometimes in rough waters, the water goes above the boat. which sucks
I have seen our boat being almost submerged into water, with only 1/4 of the sail sticking up. I took screen shot and showed the other person in the boat, but he never saw that. And it wasn't only one time. I guess graphic shows different depending on your setting or gfx.

Cause cart in boat is janky AF and you can get way more of these than carts in your boat.
I was able to drag one cart onto the krave when I did a no portals play thru. The cart hung off and tilted the boat but never caused any problems.
the other reason is that you can leave them in the boat at all time and just bring your cart to the dock and transfer the items, just leave on item in them and you dont have to rebuild a cart every time
@b barnhouse Cart on the smaller boat is a mess. I have done some testing with carts. They do work but they have weight and they also are not the best in rough water. They also damage the crap out of your ship if they move around too much. They can also cause your ship to go flying off into the sky lol. That only happened to me once but it did happen. Was super funny cause I was just testing things but had I actually been playing I would have raged a bit.

I gave up moving stuff after 150 hours of holding the W key. I just move stuff instantaneously via switching worlds now. If the devs had turn via mouse during autorun, I probably wouldn't have gotten to that point. Also, jump removing autorun...
you can turn via mouse during auto run... press Q to auto run then mouse turn w RMB

@@Treshar when you log out of your world and log into another (or vise versa), everything in your bag goes with you. The mechanic seems to be intended, for now. It's beta, so test till your hearts content. Pretty sure when beta ends and the game goes live not only will the price of the game go up but worlds will get reset. I love beta testing, and thus far resetting after beta is inevitable.
Early on I installed the mod that allows everything to be carried through portals. My time is too valuable to spend dozens of hours on grindy stuff.
I just just fly back with a full inventory of ore when needed so ive never had to deal with these things butwhats stopping you from just dropping the items when your on the boat? im assuming they just fall through? also is it not possible to attach the cart to yourself and bring it on the ship that way? pretty sure ive seen someone do that.
Free items don't collide with entities (boats, creatures, trees, etc). The cart thing does work, but both the boat and cart get damaged while moving so eventually one will explode. Or the cart will jump out.

Since I've learned things on this channel I'll actually leave a suggestion. You could show people how to efficiently cut through a mountain biome with a pickaxe, from my experience it involves building small houses along called break rooms so you can refresh your rested buff and you can repair the pickaxe as you will need to do quite frequently as cutting through a mountain is hard work.
Hmm, never tried something like that. But also, you can't dig tunnels, unless a solid boulder is above you. Even then, it has to be big enough to be supported on the sides. Otherwise it'll drop down to mining level. Unless I'm missing a trick or something?

It's not long winded I try to answer as many questions as I can because not everybody grasps a concept the same. Just go through and read all the comments asking why not just shove cart in boat because I didn't take a sec to explain cart in boat is janky at best. Now consider how many questions I would be getting if I said put stuff in cart break cart shove crate in boat gg. :)

@MisterUntamed You must be a bit slow since my first reply seems like it was hard for you to understand. Let me try to break it down for you. If I said, fill a cart, break it, put crate in boat. I would have gotten 9000 questions about how do I get them in the boat? I did this and they disappeared on me what am I doing wrong? How is this better than a cart? Are they stable or do they move around like a cart? Do they despawn? How many of them can I put in my boat? Do they damage the boat? And the list goes on and on. So I try to answer all of those questions I cant think of in the video because you have no idea how well each person watching it is going to grasp a concept. Not sure how to make it more simple to understand than that. And if you think you can do better. Have at it. TH-cam is an open platform.
As for the quality of my content. My analytics tell me all I need to know and it is very much the opposite of your option. If you don't like it you know where the door is and I suggest you hit that don't recommend this channel button and see yourself out.

Use this approach rarely, when you move your base to a new location for example. And backup the save directory before going.
If you lose your stuff because of physics glitch and not because of sea serpent restoring should not be considered cheating.
@@lowskillcamper This isn't an intended feature though, so in itself could be viewed as an exploit. If you exploit and lose your stuff as a result, it's your fault, shouldn't have tried to exploit. Cheating to get the stuff back is just sad.
@@MalcolmBlk I've lost my world twice thanks to using steam cloud saves between 2 different PCs. So backing up saves come natural to me now. I've never had to restore from a backup though. When I've lost a cart overboard once I just marked it and made additional trips. If it got launched to space though I would have used the backed up save. But in general I find physics in Valheim very stable. Never seen stuff flying around.

Losing progress due to a save error is different to losing stuff because you decided to exploit the game, is it not?
Try this box exploit when there're waves... You'll see boxes flying around a breaking. Happened to me just now. But I knew what I was signing up for when I tried to exploit the game, so I'm not cheating in the 4 stacks of iron I lost.
I know if you try to just drop items on the boat, like tossing iron so you can actually jump onto the boat, they normally fall through. I know the boats would look better if they had a chest on the boat, instead of a trap door. Though too many people just use the easy cheats of server hopping and more, not understanding this is for those of us that actually want to play on one server only and play, probably, the way the devs actually intended. Plus take all the time in the world to explain the topic of your videos, maybe people will get bored of parroting and will actually take the hint, lol.
Make a second single player world and load into it, build some chests. Go back to your main single player world, fill your inventory. Go to second world with chests (you'll spawn where you log out) drop off your stuff. Boom, never use a ship or cart in your life to transport. Reverse the process at your main base and grab all your stuff that you cant teleport with or couldn't normally carry.
.... enter in cheaters mode and just spawn things in.. I mean if you're going to be a cheater might as well go all out.

Saw a video earlier to drop the cart on the boat
idk why you would increase your boat storage. if you want to teleport metals move them to a seperate server until you move your main char to the desired spot to transfer the item. Use a mule to be more efficient.
Yeah but that's not really fun though. I personally would just build a Longship.

Nah i just use mods, this seems unnecessary complicated und dangerous. Imagine a Sea serpent attacks you or the boat just bugs a few skips and plop hours of farming is gone. I don't like using mods, so i thought i give this video a shot. But nope, the game is already grindy enough whitout the fear of loosing all my stuff to cluncky gamedesing xx.

Has more chances of falling out, requires large boat which by default has pretty decent capacity.
I got a cart on the Skarve, it's not easy, but you build a ramp and wheel it out over the deck with the handles going to either side of the mast and then destroy the last segment of the ramp so the cart falls onto the boat deck. It does cover up the boat storage, I leave 50 wood and 10 nails in there to build a workbench and another cart, just in case. (Also carry mats to build a portal) I've been in really rough seas with 1500 ore and it's stayed on the boat. It did fall out once when I had the boat too close to shore and was away during a big storm, the boat had washed up and tipped sideways, dumping the cart intact.
Or... You could just put the cart on the boat...

Imo longboat has enough storage&can have one cart in boat(no need2 break that cart).
Cart in boat is janky AF. Also you can fit way more of these in the boat.
