I was going through the same pain with my tank. After wasting 2 complete sheets, I asked a friend to help me out. We heated up the tank and the vinyl and streched it over the tank holding the vinyl from two sides. That worked out very well, although the detailing still took quite some time
Totally agree. The effect is well worth the faff! I’ve seen a few videos of folks enlisting a friend or two and doing the heated sheet-stretch method and I definitely think thats the best way to get a good start.
So Impressive. The finish and the execution. I got cold sweats watching it let alone doing it. Gonna wrap my tank panels on XSR900 after watching this. It’s going to be easier prospect than this but no doubt tense. Thank you for a brilliant video.
Great job on your tank wrap Version 2! Suggestion for you pinstripes? Try Matt Black instead, and reduce the thickness down to 3mm. Reckon that'll look sharp, finishing off the brushed steel additions nicely. Looks much better than the carbon 👍
I totally agree chaps. Matt stripes would certainly fit the style a lot better. Thinner would be more subtle. Not sure about the coloiur though. I have no other real colour accents to match up with. It's a monochrome moto!
Great tutorial! In my experience what we need more than anything is a 3rd hand to hold the heat gun. This hand, however, has to be attach to the same nervous system as the other 2 hands 🧐
That's a bloody good job that bud. And the choice of colour and pinstripe is really cool. Well done. I know what vid I'll be following when I do mine!!
My pleasure! I hope you have a successful wrapping! Just plan in as much time as possible, because it'll be lots of two steps forward, 6 steps back, 3 forward, 4 back, 1 forward....
You definitely have the knack for wrapping. You make it look so easy that I fancy getting some and making a complete cock-up! A very nice job that. I do like the brushed effect.
I constantly hear and read, that the VINYL WRAP protects and saves the vehicle's paint job. How can it adhere well enough to the paint beneath (adhesives) without causing damage? Particularly when parked under the sun's intense rays and heat? Just leaving BLUE MASKING TAPE on my RUSTOLEUM CAN PAINT JOB for about 3 weeks was sufficient to cause damage to it's once glossy smooth surface.
The longer you leave it on, the harder it is to get off. But the products usually have a max time recommended before it should be removed. I’ve never had any issues and the paint always looks like new underneath. Modern adhesives are simply magic!
@kevinbell1138 correct. I guess all bets are off with aftermarket. Although the paint was fine on my Honda CB1000R and that was the softest, cheesiest paint I’ve ever seen.
Looks very nice AMC, your getting very good at this game. (Little advise, use the knifeless tape on ALL cuts, even if it can't be seen. With a blade you can cut through the paint and undercoat, which can in time let water get to the metal resulting in rust).
Thanks Mark. You'Re absolutely right. Bit of laziness on my part there. Luckily my bike is always indoors and thankfully doesn't get wet unless I get caught out!! But still...
I had a mt09 sportracker with a brushed metal tank....yours looks as good as the real thing, don’t think I’d have the patience’s to do it though because I get air bubbles and dust bits every time I put screen protectors on my devices.
Looks good 👍🏻 I was thinking of using the same dark brush metal vinyl for the lid o my silver top box so it looked better with my satin black Tiger Sport. ( I could used the remainder to cover the wing mirrors on my car to cover some scratches)
I’m getting an Yamaha xsr and the only color they offer is red and white. Looks ok but not my taste . Might do this .Looks good! Thank goodness it’s just a tank and fender .
I totally disagree! I’ve painted some stuff and unless you’ve got the perfect space and conditions, it always looks home made! With vinyl wrapping, i can have a new color every season and then return to stock whenever i want to. Plus doing it yourself, it’s far cheaper. 30-50€ and the tank has a whole new look. The Honda CB1000R is about to get it’s first vinyl re-style.
Hahaha! Cheeky sod!! The archaic measuring device is called a ‚Zollstock‘ or in english, an inch-stick! Every tradesman across the country has them and the almost never have retractable tape measures. Its weird!!
Thanks a lot Lee. I reckon that I’ll have to do something with the rear end next. Maybe even finally get a rear cowl and turn it into a single seater with no rear footpegs!!
@@AndyManCam I kind of like the way the rear pegs just hang there. I had mine powder coated black but they would look a bit daft if you turned it into a single seater.
Sadly not as durable as the real thing obviously. I've already scratched it in a few places getting on and off. Might be a finish that needs regular refreshing, or perhaps even a clearcoat on top.
Looks great Andy, thinking of doing something similar to my 1200r , like the hair cut and beard combo too mate , it’s a good look that :) enjoying all your videos, and your bikes looking great too, I like the new slip on , got a carbon fibre on mine too and love it
Cheers Daz! Give it a go mate, nothing but a few pennies and a little time to lose. Although I had a full head of hair when I started this nonsense!! 😂
Think I will Andy , you make it look very easy and I’m certain it is very tricky, but it’s trial and error I guess, it’s just deciding what colour as I have a white tank and black frame so not so sure, maybe a bit of carbon to go with the pipe or gloss black panels 🤔 the haircut soots you sir, I’ve got a teapotone look and love it, I’d look like a potato without a beard , don’t know why mine fell out, maybe from being indecisive about tank colours and rubbing my head to much 😅
Hahaha! I think that ironically it might have been the stress of vinyl wrapping that caused mine to fall out!! Definitely trial and error though mate. You'll either get a feel for it, or you wont. Just expect the first few attempts to go slightly sideways and then if they don't, you're winning!

Out of all the videos I have seen on wrapping bike parts. YOURS IS PERFECT. THANK YOU I learned alot. 👊 🏍
Thanks AA. Happy you got something out of it 👍🏻
Halfway through I was thinking it is not worth the faffing around, by the end I was thinking wow it looks fantastic. Great job AMC.
Haha! How the sight of lovely smooth brushed steel can sway you eh?! :D Cheers Harry!
I came here for the (excellent) vinyl-wrap "tutorial" and stayed for the soothing plinky-plonky music ...thanks Andy and great job!
Haha! Everones a winner here mate! Cheers for coming at all!!
I was going through the same pain with my tank. After wasting 2 complete sheets, I asked a friend to help me out. We heated up the tank and the vinyl and streched it over the tank holding the vinyl from two sides. That worked out very well, although the detailing still took quite some time
The brushed design looks really great - I#m thinking of starting all over using that stuff.
Totally agree. The effect is well worth the faff! I’ve seen a few videos of folks enlisting a friend or two and doing the heated sheet-stretch method and I definitely think thats the best way to get a good start.
Amazing just how much info you can gleam from 1 video, thank you, this gave more answers than I had questions...
So Impressive. The finish and the execution. I got cold sweats watching it let alone doing it. Gonna wrap my tank panels on XSR900 after watching this. It’s going to be easier prospect than this but no doubt tense. Thank you for a brilliant video.

Agreed, you could also use red stripes. Makes you go faster. :-)
I totally agree chaps. Matt stripes would certainly fit the style a lot better. Thinner would be more subtle. Not sure about the coloiur though. I have no other real colour accents to match up with. It's a monochrome moto!
Well, that turned out pretty darn good! Loving the buzz-cut too.
"Air bubbleage"
Cheers Smokey! Sadly the buzz cut was less of a styling upgrade and more of an aging necessity!
Yes, I like that. Nice job, Andy. It sets off the bike very neatly and tastefully. 👍
Cheers Keith. That’s exactly what i was aiming for. A bit of a subtle highlight rather than the obviously fake carbon stuff!
Love how that came out. If it were me, I would probably have made the pinstripe a second color like red or blue and much thinner.
Thanks! It looks OK doesn’t it! I would have probably done the same, if I had any other colours on the bike to match up with.
great job, I really like the look for the finished work. so much so, I may try something similar.
Cheers mate! Good luck with yours.
Incredible idea and information. Youve got my scared and excited.
You’re very handy, Andy. Looks quite classy all back together. 👍🏍🇦🇺
Cheers Russell! I agree, it looks a lot more grown up with the steel instead of the over-carbon look!
Great tutorial!

Danke! A job worth doing, is a job worth doing well!
Looked good with the pin strips
Cheers Jeet.
This is awesome work. Given me the confidence to have a go myself. Let’s see how it turns out
You can do it! Good luck!
That's a bloody good job that bud. And the choice of colour and pinstripe is really cool. Well done. I know what vid I'll be following when I do mine!!
Cheers Tyrone. Not often that a change like this pleases so many! The carbon stuff was far more galvanising!
You made it look waaaay to easy! Top job 👍
I'm very glad that that is how it seemed! In reality I was WAY beyond my comfort zone!! :D
it is much better than the first wrap. GJ!
Many thanks Ralph.
Wow the 3M knife tape is much better than the other brand you used previously..
Considerably! The biggest difference was how much more flexible the tape is. So much more control!
A thumbs up mainly for your patience
Haha! Thanks Jay! Knowing that I have an audience helps to keep the temper in check!
Thanks for a great video . Looking at doing something similar/ on Bmw Rt panniers . First timer so all these tips are very helpful.
My pleasure! I hope you have a successful wrapping! Just plan in as much time as possible, because it'll be lots of two steps forward, 6 steps back, 3 forward, 4 back, 1 forward....
That’s got a classy, bullet proof look about it, very cool! A tank worthy to be seen in a John Wick movie😁Fantastic skills there Andy!
Thanks Eric. Not a bad movie to get your bike in to! ;D
You sir, have the patience of a saint.👍
Or the editing skills of a PR genius! 😜
Great job! Maybe add a video on how to get the tank off.
That poetically would have been a good idea. Sadly the bike is now in the careful hands of a new owner.
Very nice 👍🏻 You’ve got far more patience than I
It has been said that I was blessed in the patience department. Odd because I constantly feel frustrated and impatient!! 😂
That looks awesome!! Very well done!!
Many thanks 🙏🏻
Good job Andy. Looks fantastic. Also, an excellent job of editing out all the effing and blinding that, I'm sure, accompanied the work on this.
Thanks Geoff. There was certainly a little bit more effing and jeffing than shown here! But then, this is a family show! 😜
You definitely have the knack for wrapping. You make it look so easy that I fancy getting some and making a complete cock-up!
A very nice job that. I do like the brushed effect.

Great job Andy , might do mine instead of spraying it cheers shane uk 🇬🇧
It's definitely worth a try mate. If it works, brilliant. If it doesn't, then you've lost 30 quid and an afternoon.
Dude so much better locking then the carbon vinyl! Nice job und wunderbar 👌
Cheers very much! I prefer it too! REAL carbon for the win!
Nice job Andy looks much better than the carbon rap 👍😊
Cheers Gaz. I totally agree. At the very least, you don't see as many bikes with this finish as with carbon wraps.
I see I missed a lot... what a beautiful haircut indeed - at some angle it sure has this brushed steel effect :D
You so desperately ignore modern trends in measuring technology :) is the device special? family history?

Did you apply the black pinstriping 1/2 way onto of the brushed metal vinyl and 1/2 way on the paint?
Yeah i think so.
Really good job mate, i much prefer it to the carbon wrap. Intrigued to find out what's next for the fz1

Looks great but how durable is it? After a few 100miles of contact with your body and legs will it wear or peel?
Sadly not as durable as the real thing obviously. I've already scratched it in a few places getting on and off. Might be a finish that needs regular refreshing, or perhaps even a clearcoat on top.
Very smart mate

Greats vids dude. What is that black ring thing on your filler cap called??Is it a standard item or something that is a extra. I want one on my tiger
That's the SW Motech evo tank ring.
Great looking tank look at the flies on the screen 🤣
Yeah, I’ve collected a few! Really ought to give the bike a wash at some point!
Andy Man Cam Sadly custard flies don’t taste of custard 🥴
A great result but what a major ball ache to do that

Brushed steel sounds so manly... great job :-)
Could be a good band name? Cheers!
Btw Andy is a little backed up now so if you sent your tank in be patient it will happen :)
Absolutely right. And if it takes more than a month, that means I've cocked it up, thrown the vinyl in the sea and sold your tank on ebay...
I assume you don't clean this at the car wash. You use a rag and gentle cleaner?
No, i use the jetwash like most other bikers in Germany. I just do it very carefully and from a distance!
Awesome 😎👍
Thank you! Cheers!
jeez, top job!
Thank you kindly Renegade!
Looks great. Dreaming about doing it, but don't have the "balls" :)
I say just give it a go. This whole attempt cost me about 50€ total. Plus I've still got 30cm of vinyl and 7m of knifeless tape left for the next try!

after living with these vinyl jobs would you recommend doing a clear vinyl over it for protection?
This brushed metal effect is actually quite susceptible to scratches, sadly. So perhaps that wouldn't be such a bad idea. A whole new level of faff though!
