Hi Matt, I've been watching your videos since 2009, 2010, and I've been watching your videos like The Gran Turismo 2 Secret Cars. I was impressed when I saw the secret cars like the CLK Race Car and the Volkswagem Polo. In that case I kept looking for more and more things about the secrets of the GT franchise after 10 years playing the Gran Turismo series. I hope this goes on and show more secrets of this franchise to all players. And this is a fantastic vídeo, I liked very much.
Fantastic work overall between you and the other two. I honestly thought you presented the scrapped cars well enough and gave a better explanation of them than I would've done. With that said, I do have some things to say on some of these scrapped cars. Starting with the BMW 3-Series, the scrapped ones are actually e36s. Which were the generation before the actual 3-Series in the final game. I also think the RMs for those possibly could've been based on other real-life BTCC liveries like other RMs in GT2 were. Man though, scrapping that e36 was a missed opportunity. PD could've altered the model and made it into an e36 M3 instead. A thing to note about the CLK-GTR in GT4, it's actually the CLK-LM, not the GTR. (CLK LM has a v8 while the GTR has a V12). The CLK-GTR is also in NFS:HP2, MC3 Dub Edition, multiple Forza games, and in PGR4 to note. The CLK-LM I believe also appeared in Forza Motorsport 1 and is in both Project Cars 1 & 2. Finally for Rufs, another livery that one of Ruf RMs could've been was the Ruf CTR2 Pikes Peak car that was out at that time. I do think it's more likely that the Ruf RMs would've been based on Porsche 911 JGTC cars since PD originally planned to add those to GT2, but I just wanted to mention the Pikes Peak car for the heck of it.
The cut Mini was most likely going to be based on the Mini Miglia, which is raced in a support race for the BTCC. It would have featured widebody arches and immense levels of grip. Due to the sheer amount of miglias raced though, what livery would featured on it is anyone's guess.
Licensing is so dumb at times, at 11:00 you literally have a Porsche racing car with a GRAN TURISMO logo on it, and they still wouldn't be allowed to use the car in the game.
Hopeful quid pro quo that did not pan out as they hoped. That is my guess. Give them money for sponsorship and hope that buys you licensing opportunity for your game.
Shows perhaps a lack of foresight from Porsche. Being grown-up now, the Playstation gen may prefer to spend their salaries on featured cars like Lotus Elises, R34 GTRs and Type R Hondas rather than Porsches because all the fond memories of thrashing them round Tsukuba on Gran Turismo.
14:10 you can also see a photo of the Escort in the GT2 demo discs simulation mode at Ford dealership. Yes, they were about to use real life photos as thumbnails
Just a note over 15:09 That 323i Coupe body its a E36 model (as the name suggests). Its the 1990 Series 3 model. On GT2, the series 3 that we have is the E46 model, released on 1998. Maybe its a little hard to notice difference on PS1 graphics, but its very cool to see how the model would look like.
I found out that the price car for the S license in GT2 is the Toyota GTOne '99 Race Car with the Esso logos. The surprise is that I have the ntsc-u/c version of GT2. When I saw that, I was shocked that PD forgot to change it before release.
The change from Esso to Exxon in the North American version was for legal rather than licensing reasons. As it is an obvious reference to Standard Oil, the 'Esso' name cannot be used in states where the rights to the 'Standard' name are owned by Chevron or BP.
Gran Turismo never actually featured CLK GTR, "technically". The models for GT4, 5 and 6 are CLK LM. Even in GT5, the Dev realised and changed the name from CLK GTR to CLK LM.
But you would have had to pay for those DLCs. I've never paid for a DLC based on principle. You buy a game and it should have everything in it. If not? The game is rubbish and the developers are greedy.
@@mattl1962 ok but every game thats successful usually has some type of dlc, nobody is greedy. try making a game with high detailed models (for that time) without any type of extra pay for doing that work and see how far your motivation to even care gets you. im pretty sure you would just be murdering your time and effort for other peoples happiness without any type of pay other than getting"muh were happy, omg they listen to us because free kar, omgeee best game dev ever". like seriously this type of criticism gets old because its usually from people who are stuck up and cant just cough up a few bucks to support the devs.(unless its microtransactions everywhere then i understand). times have changed and so has the methods of obtaining cash for work you arent even obligated to do, so suck it up or just dont buy it at all that simple.
@@Richlovescars it's not my problem EA, Ubisoft etc don't want to pay what devs are actually worth. They should be getting wayyyy better pay and the answer does NOT lie in microtransactions my friend.
@@Richlovescars if a company can charge 90 - 100 dollars per game sold - they can pay every single dev over 100,000 per game, but they don't because the marketing department get the glory because let's face it they do the work of getting most games so popular in the first place, despite not adding any actual value to the game.
It's crazy when you really look at it, most "Racing Modifications" in the older games were used as workarounds for licensing issues, which is why I believe why it took so long to return in GT5. It's interesting but disappointing at the same time.
18:27 That's actually the CLK LM. In game, it is mislabeled as the GTR. The LM had a different body shape as well as a V8 instead of a V12. The name of the car would be corrected in later GT games.

I already know why some of these didn't appear like the Renault Spider and Jaguar concept. The drivers are visible in those cars, but PD didn't want to show the drivers in GT2 yet.
I kind of secretly wish they would do a remaster of GT2. I like GT Sport, but there's something special about watching the used car lots, racing beaters and barely beating the other cars, and the awesome circuits that GT2 had.
This was a very well presented video overall, with a lot of time & effort well spent on researching all of the information, as well as showcasing all the cars in one way or another, a fantastic video indeed, made for a great learning process too! 👍👏😃
10:47 the Yellow Bird also had a blowoff valve noise that sounded like a bird chirping. 12:43 aka "the most overpowered FF car in the game". I'm serious, on paper, this car is nothing special, but in-game it's a monster.
Racing modification Renault Sport Spider...could be those one-make similar to Clio V6, but there is a chance of possibility for Sifo Renault Sport Spider JGTC in 1997. XJR15 would more likely be the one with bigger rear wing/super rare XJR15-LM, as the winged one similar to the car known as study car for Japan's Tokai University. GTHD did have released in Hong Kong and perhaps, Taiwan with Traditional Chinese. I remembered trying out in Sony Showroom in Hong Kong, which unfortunately gone was the premium interior GC Impreza WRC. Tsuchiya MR2 was in blue full season in 1997 JGTC.
As good as GT2 was imagine if they had more time to develop it, it would had been amazing. Always thought the GT2 carlist was weird, for example, 323ti but no M3? shame they didn't put the Escort mk1, that's one of my fav cars, although the 1600 is a better car, by the way, there was no polo G40 mk1, just mk2 phase 1 (the red one you put) and mk2 phase 2 (the black one you put), great work!!
The TVR Tuscan did appear in GT3 and GT4. Though they stopped with the racing modifications in those games, which is kind of sad. It would have been nice to make racecars yourself, like you could in the older games. This feature however is present in the Forza Motorsport and Horizon series on Microsoft's platform. There you can apply widebody-kits and spoilers to turn a normal car into a proper racing machine, as well as giving them pretty much any livery you want. Speaking of the Beetle 1.9 - This would likely also been a diesel powered variant, as VW did not have any 1.9 liter gasoline engines. The 1.9 TDI is by far VW's most successful engine, and the longest lasting engines made by the company. First appearing in 1994 Golf and Passat models, this early version had 90 horsepower, but it was later increased to 110 HP. The formula was simple; by taking the 2.5 TDI that Audi made, taking away one cylinder and fitting a smaller turbocharger to make the most possible torque at low revs. The engine later got an upgrade with a cylinder head that had individual fuel pumps in the injectors themselves. This variant had the PD denomination, where PD stands for "Pumpe Düse" or "Pump injector". This iteration of the 1.9 was very troubled in the beginning, but it got refined and made extremely durable in 2001. Power outputs ranged from 115 HP to 131 HP, where a 150 HP model were available (most likely used in the Golf GTD), and SEAT had one that produced 160 HP for their Ibiza Sport model. The one used in the New Beetle was likely the 110 HP variant.
Awsome video Matt :) I think you forgot about one car, Audi A4 Avant was in demo of GT2, i have a video on my channel by presentation this Audi in full version of GT2, replaced one of these RUFs :P
Lets get this straight: back then in the originally planned GT2, we were supposed to have Paganis, McLaren, Porsche, Lamborghini and Ferrari?????? That way GT2 would have been the best game ever! What a dream to get an update version of the game comprehensive of all the cut contents. Such a shame
Though this reply came a while later & would still interest some, possibly early next year an update to the GT2+ mod will come out, that has a few more cut cars restored. Like the E36 3-Series, becoming the 323i Coupe, as well as the A4 Avant along with other ones that have been cut & restored in that same mod. Though ones that only have their names & logos won't be, as there was nothing made in the first place for some of them, even in earlier versions. Things like the C55, and those RUF's will be coming through, as they aren't much different to the models in-game, which have been used to restore them. But in the end, some of these have been brought through. Not all, but still quite a nice amount.

I see you have the blue GT2 disk. Try rubbing it with a piece of cloth, or fingers if you really like it - and sniff them. The old blue disc was coated in scratch and sniff, with a scent I would like you to try to identify on your own. Personally i think its super rad.
I think it's more than likely that by "Escort RS2000" Polyphony meant the Mk V Escort RS2000, and the reference to the other gen is just a coincidence. The Golf Cabrio would probably have it's roof up, also I suppose that's why no-roof-at-all the cars like Elise Trofeo and Renault Sport Spider were cut. New Beetle 1.9 would be another TDI car included in the game. English wiki page for Zonda seems to have a mistake, stating that the C12 had 444hp, while most other sources state a value closer to 400. You also seemed to mistake both BMW E46s present in the game as E36s. Well made and interesting video, must have took a lot of work.
11:02 i find it wierd that there's a Gran Turismo logo on this Porsche. If anything i would expect it to have a NFS logo not a GT one. Maybe it's a further leftover of Porsche's in the game.
I know this is months old, and probably pointed out by someone else, but GTHD was not a Japan only release. I have it installed on my EU/UK PS3, and it's one of the earliest things I installed on it...
18:00 its also in Need For Speed 3 PS1&PC :D it has the proper Racing design youst not decal`s, btw the one in NFS3 has the proper mirror`s in yellow btw :) PS1 version to PC do differ both in nfs3 also nfs4 :) awesome video as allways :)

One more potential version of the Renault Sport Spider tha it could have been (and more likely to have been as a standalone model like the string suggests), is the unique JGTC GT300 car that ran in 1997. I didn't know about that one-make series however, that's very cool! I personally would've put that racing car as the RM for the stock Spider if I'd been in charge :D www.diariomotor.com/competicion/imagenes/2016/02/RenaultSpiderJGTC.jpg Oh and while writing this i just found out the car also was entered in Le Mans 1996, with a V6 swapped into it: i.wheelsage.org/pictures/r/renault/sport_spider_v6_le_mans/renault_sport_spider_v6_le_mans.jpeg A very cool looking car that also could've been a potential Racinc model.. About the RUF BR2, BR4, BTR4, and CR4, I can' say for sure because I don' have their actual appearances, but they all have unique bodies, with slight variations in front/rear bumpers, exhausts, mirrors, taillights and I believe wheels as well (although the wheels are still standard RUF wheels). About the BMW, they are different because they are E36, while the final game use all E46 models, except for the E36 Compact. The RMs of all the E46 coupes is based on the 1996 Fina liveried, STC E36. (Much later mentioned so nevermind :D) The CLK race Car that's hidden in GT2, is eerily similar to a concept that was present ed by Mercedes for the ew DTM rules of 2000, called the CLK DTM 2000. I made a replica mod of it for GT2 since I thought it had to have been this car's design that was meant to be on it. The Golf Cabriolet I think would have had its top closed, like all other converitbles in GT1 and 2. About the Polo mk3 that's hidden in final GT2, it actually has 2 opponent entries, one of which you can enoutner by playing the random Event Generator with a ~120-150hp car (the opponent entry has 140-ish HP as it was meant to appear in the compact car cup. About the Silvia GT2's potential green color, I did find a green with yellow colored windshield banner S14 JGTC. Such a shame the Lambos, Ferraris, Porches, and McLaren couldn't make it. It wouldn't be much representation for their rich history, but it would've been so so neat, but at the same time, we probably would've missed out on Vector, Venturi, RUF, and Lister, so I'm glad we didn't get them. Of course I would love to have gotten both, but I'm happy with what we did get.
If only licensing and rushed development weren't a problem, we would have seen Diablos, Paganis, Ferrari's and McLaren's along with other cars in GT2.

Thanks man! There are always little things I overlook...
@@MattJ155 You're welcome! and it happens to me too.
The cut Mini was most likely going to be based on the Mini Miglia, which is raced in a support race for the BTCC. It would have featured widebody arches and immense levels of grip. Due to the sheer amount of miglias raced though, what livery would featured on it is anyone's guess.
Good shout! I'll guess we'll never know for sure.
@@RJPhotographics lucky for them, there was NFS: Porsche Unleashed. The game where I first met the 996 GT3.
14:10 you can also see a photo of the Escort in the GT2 demo discs simulation mode at Ford dealership. Yes, they were about to use real life photos as thumbnails
Just a note over 15:09
That 323i Coupe body its a E36 model (as the name suggests).
6:43 i had that car as a Toy
Thanks to GT2 A-Spec, some cut cars restored along new and original cars.
As of now, Ferrari FCJ F355s were yet to be made....

@@Power5 At leas you had a good new years eve lol
If it wasn't for the rush of Christmas, we would have seen them all prim and proper.
Damn Sony
The change from Esso to Exxon in the North American version was for legal rather than licensing reasons. As it is an obvious reference to Standard Oil, the 'Esso' name cannot be used in states where the rights to the 'Standard' name are owned by Chevron or BP.
Do this for all of the rest of the gt games.
dude, i love this type of video... thanks a lot
Thanks!
So many rare and unique cars. Great vid Matt!
Thanks!
It's pretty relaxing to listen to this video while i'm playing gran turismo 2 on the ps2 slim. : D Nice video must have took a lot of work to do.
5:18 Green? Definitely Blue
Gran Turismo never actually featured CLK GTR, "technically".
The models for GT4, 5 and 6 are CLK LM. Even in GT5, the Dev realised and changed the name from CLK GTR to CLK LM.
i think my youtube reccomendations have started to like you, i never played GT2, only GT4, yet this is just so incredibly intresting to watch.
GT HD Concept was released in digital form for Europe and USA as well but was removed later.
If PS1 had internet connection these cars would be available via DLC
@@Richlovescars you don't pay a subscription service to use (most) cars (currently) - why should you when you buy a computer game?
Hey MattJ! It's been a while since I saw your channel and yesterday this video was recommended to me. I remember you since I watched secret car videos as a kid and I'm glad I found your channel again. I have subscribed now, and I'm glad to see you going strong! Also it's nice to see a fellow Simpsons Hit & Run player. Cheers!
Thanks for coming back!
I already know why some of these didn't appear like the Renault Spider and Jaguar concept. The drivers are visible in those cars, but PD didn't want to show the drivers in GT2 yet.
Yeah, the drivers would've been crudely modeled as a consequence, and it would've hurt the game's visual representation.
I guess they would have had soft tops, like the cut Lotus Elise I mentioned in the video.
GT2 changed the game big time. So many memories.
I kind of secretly wish they would do a remaster of GT2. I like GT Sport, but there's something special about watching the used car lots, racing beaters and barely beating the other cars, and the awesome circuits that GT2 had.
Just imagine GT 1 to 4 would come to the store tomorrow. The PSstore would crash probably XD and. The price is not important to me.
Are there GT4 cut cars as well? If so, you could make a vid about it
The CLK in the Screenshot of GT2 is CLK GTR, the one in the GT4 is CLK LM. Released a year after the GTR version came out.
38:02 obviously the MR2 was cut because it had 98205 HP. No for real great video
Actually, the 98205 HP was a glitch.
Watching this 3years later , what an excellent video 👌👌👌
As good as GT2 was imagine if they had more time to develop it, it would had been amazing. Always thought the GT2 carlist was weird, for example, 323ti but no M3? shame they didn't put the Escort mk1, that's one of my fav cars, although the 1600 is a better car, by the way, there was no polo G40 mk1, just mk2 phase 1 (the red one you put) and mk2 phase 2 (the black one you put), great work!!
The CLK-GTR in NFS series is also in NFS Hot Pursuit 2. Its my favourite car, beside the Lambo Diablo, And McLaren F1.
Watched through the entire thing, there are more cut cars than the amount of cars total in underground 2
2:54 Polyphony could not use TOCA or anything BTCC as Codemaster held the rights
Allegedly they still do today. There's also apparently a new BTCC game in the works according to Matt Neal.
Awsome video Matt :) I think you forgot about one car, Audi A4 Avant was in demo of GT2, i have a video on my channel by presentation this Audi in full version of GT2, replaced one of these RUFs :P
Thanks Mikis. I'll check it out!
Amazing that we actually get to see some of these now.
29:27 okay, but you have to admit, that is a smooth as hell transition.
Great amount of research! Really enjoying all the "cut content" videos
The BMW 3 Series's left in were the E46 models, the cut versions were E36
Advan Racing, OPTION Tuning Car Battle Spec-R and JGTC. Three PS1 racing games that I've never even heard about it!
Yeah, they were Japanese-only releases. It's amazing how many racing games were only releases in Japan - there were many more...
@@MattJ155 huh, no wonder. I'm definitely gonna try playing those games.
Not all, but still quite a nice amount.

nah
I see you have the blue GT2 disk.
Try rubbing it with a piece of cloth, or fingers if you really like it - and sniff them. The old blue disc was coated in scratch and sniff, with a scent I would like you to try to identify on your own.
Personally i think its super rad.
gran turismo came a long way now has both ruf and porsche
But I’m in mobile I can’t see the join button
I can't beat the GT40 in rome circuit :(
If you get the Toyota MR2 GTS and Go for the racing modifications you'll get that GT40 in no-time at all

11:02 i find it wierd that there's a Gran Turismo logo on this Porsche. If anything i would expect it to have a NFS logo not a GT one. Maybe it's a further leftover of Porsche's in the game.
Just imagine, Ferrari being in Gran Turismo 2

Dude, what a wonderful video! I absolutely love it, thank you.
I would always know what it would've looked like to tune a fiat 500 to a max of stage 4 turbo kits just the same as the mini cooper
The Tuscan Speed 6 is in GT2, unless the one you’re talking about was a slight variation? Anyway, I’m using it right now for the Grand Valley 300Km race.
As far as I know, they're similar. Maybe the Speed Six is a top-end variant.

To bad we didn't have the DiabloJGTC/F355GT and the McLaren F1 GTR ! 😯 !
The V12/V8 sound would have been awesome ! 😎 !
One more potential version of the Renault Sport Spider tha it could have been (and more likely to have been as a standalone model like the string suggests), is the unique JGTC GT300 car that ran in 1997. I didn't know about that one-make series however, that's very cool! I personally would've put that racing car as the RM for the stock Spider if I'd been in charge :D

Oh and while writing this i just found out the car also was entered in Le Mans 1996, with a V6 swapped into it: i.wheelsage.org/pictures/r/renault/sport_spider_v6_le_mans/renault_sport_spider_v6_le_mans.jpeg
A very cool looking car that also could've been a potential Racinc model..
(Much later mentioned so nevermind :D)
The CLK race Car that's hidden in GT2, is eerily similar to a concept that was present ed by Mercedes for the ew DTM rules of 2000, called the CLK DTM 2000.
