Very nice video. I wish there was a way to protect the sides of the iPad on the go when removing the Apple Magic Keyboard. I have seen some thin case covers that work with the Apple Magic Keyboard, but it seems like the connector pins eventually go bad on all of them.
I like how the Apple Magic Keyboard types a bit better ... but I prefer the Logitech case for two reasons. 1) You have better protection on sides but also a more sturdy front and back and iPad will not fall out if nudged off a magnet. 2) The hinge allows you to fold the keyboard so the screen stays open or the screen is protected and closed. This is a big one because I download TV/movies to watch at the gym or when traveling. Unfortunately, the hinge on the magic keyboard case only folds forward to the closed position where I cannot see the screen. Not good. So I would have to take the iPad out of the case which makes it more likely over time to get damaged and have to find somewhere to put it. These hassles are eliminated with the Logitech case where you can just fold it up and securely go anywhere with nothing else to carry. Also, I asked Apple why the magic keyboard case has no side protection. They said because they sell Apple Care. Hmm?
I’ve used most keyboards. I don’t like the keyboards that lean back past the keyboard and need a fold out stand. On a desk, it’s fine, but if you’re actually using it on your lap, it has the Surface Pro problem in which most of the weight leans back right on that kickstand, which means a very thin line of weight on your legs. It gets painful after a short while. You also have to keep it closer so that the stand doesn’t slip off your knees where the entire thing falls off.
@@MrMartinoBranding I’d rather not damage it at all and I’ll never require repair. The Logitech combo touch is $100 less and protects the entire unit, vs paying $350 for a “keyboard” that offers no protection and then another $165 just in case I drop it. Apple does it so you’ll fork over for Apple Care. $250 vs $550. They can take a hike. I do prefer the Apple keyboard, but they can go @#$% themselves if they”re going to play this game. @@eyesaccoffeeaddict2333Cost is not the only factor to be fair. Sending it in to get repaired can be time consuming and inconvenient depending in what region/country you purchased it, especially if you purchased it from an authorised reseller (e.g. BestBuy or Amazon) rather than directly from Apple. In fact in many countries it is impossible to buy directly through Apple and you have to buy through a third party distributor whose service may be subpar. Even if you do buy it directly from Apple there will still be a period of time ranging anywhere from a few hours to a few weeks ,depending on how busy your local Apple Store or Apple repair partner is, where you would not be able to use the iPad while it is getting fixed which depending on your use case might be a major issue. So having that extra bit of protection really can make quite the difference.
*”…and when you’re not using it you just pop the iPad out.”* Bingo. That’s the problem right there: the Magic Keyboard is less a case, more a desktop stand, with a very limited viewing angle. When I want to use the iPad as an actual hand held device, say when I’m teaching a class, I can’t just fold the keyboard back as you can with the combo touch. I have to remove the case entirely and I’m left holding the iPad naked. The Magic Keyboard also offers no side protection, and no protection for the pencil in its charging position, which could be easily knocked off and lost. Now to be fair, the combo touch also provides no pencil protection, as you mention at 3:47 [UPDATE: but wait, is that a pencil flap I see in the image at 3:45?], but the Logitech Folio Touch, my case of choice, does. As to the textures, the magic keyboard’s leather-like surface has two problems: first, it’s a fingerprint magnet; the attractive Logitech cloth surface has no such issue. Second, I’ve had two Microsoft keyboards; both surfaces began wrinkling and flaking within a few months, and looked horrible. Unless the material in the Magic Keyboard has been substantially upgraded, there seems little point in throwing away $300 on it. 5:25 *”You get slightly better protection with the Combo Touch”* “Slightly”? You just said when you’re not using the Magic Keyboard you have to remove it and store it somewhere leaving your iPad with _no_ protection at all. The Combo Touch never needs to be removed. To me that means _significantly_ better protection.
Yes I don’t know which one to pick. I just recently got my first ever tablet - iPad Pro 11 And while I enjoy using it just as a tablet, I’m using it naked and it makes me feel really uncomfortable. I’ll have more of a sense of security once it’s attached to something. I looked into the Smart Folio but it’s $80 and all it is is a case with a cover. Now that’s great and very much needed, $80 for basically a case and that’s it is steep! I’m not going to get both, can’t afford to. But I’ve got some decisions to make between Logitech and magic keyboard.
There are a variety of 3rd party options on Amazon. I have the Air 5 and was able to find one that is very similar to the Magic Keyboard. Track pad works very well. All for a fraction of the price. Best part is that it has a holder for apple pen. Another combo/keyboard was from Zagg. It was great just heavy because it had a case around the iPad itself.
I ordered a “off brand” Magic Keyboard for less that $100 and does basically the exact same thing. TBH if you love apple products and really want the matching brand accessories go for it, but Amazon really hooked it up with this one… For me, $330 is a little too much for me so I chose an alternate route and was not disappointed. I hope this helps…
Nice video Adam! I’m just waiting for the new iPads that are supposedly being released in march, then I’ll get a folio for my new iPad. Would you recommend just a folio/case? Or is it better to go with a keyboard? I’m not a pro user, just want the iPad Pro for the 120hz refresh rate lol
Man I love the Magic Keyboard for the typing on couch experience. How do you plan on using the iPad? They’ve been talking about new iPads for a long time so it will be interesting to see if they get a full refresh or if its just another incremental one
Thanks for the comparison. I got the Combo Touch for my iPad Air 5 because it was so much cheaper, the keyboard detaches easily, and it has the edge protection. I got the iPad and case after the new Pro released to take advantage of the sale prices on both.
I tested both the Apple Magic Keyboard and the Logitech Combo. I love the Logitech, especially for the freedom of detaching the keyboard. However, I’ve noticed an issue with the Logitech keys (particularly in the middle of the keyboard) feeling loose-they sink more than usual when typing. This isn’t an issue with the Apple Magic Keyboard; its keys feel much sturdier, like a proper keyboard. Has anyone else experienced this with the Logitech? I bought mine from Amazon, and I’m wondering if the ones sold at the Apple Store might have better quality, especially regarding the keyboard. Would love to hear your thoughts!
Is Adam the only ones that know the logitech combo keyboard clips to the back of the case? all the other reviews I've seen complain that there is nothing to do with the detached keyboard
I have found a refurbished combo touch from logitech website for 135 C$ (98 USD) which I think is the best deal especially as it will provide both a laptop like feel with its keyboard as well as folio touch with its detachable keyboard.
The apple magic keyboard DOESN'T offer more versatility. You just shown the logitech has more versatility (function row keys, versatility with hinge and ability to detach and still use, etc). You like the typing SLIGHTLY better on the magic keyboard and you like the style better. That's it. Almost no one is going to hook peripherals to an iPad and need to charge the iPad simultaneously (hardly anyone will just do the former). Pass through charging isn't important to more than 99% of iPad buyers.
@@adamtalkstech I wouldn't say lap use is more versatile since both trade blows (combo touch gives the better viewing angles and magic keyboard is more sturdy on the lap). Imo both kinda suck on the lap for those two different reasons. But desk use is kinda better on the magic keyboard (uses less space and screen is closer to the face). I hate that the apple magic keyboard doesn't offer protection around the sides and the horrible viewing angles when on my lap and I'm sitting in a chair. I kinda hate (not a lot) no function row keys. I'm spoiled. I like less steps to achieve a goal. I hate that the combo touch isn't as sturdy as I like on my lap. Personally having a really hard time with this decision. I currently have both and like the protection and flexibility of the logitech keyboard, but the build quality of the keyboard itself is pretty poor. There’s a ton of flex and the trackpad just feels so cheap compared to the apple keyboard. Also the apple keyboard has a much more laptop feel/look. Also, as I’m typing this, I’m realizing the larger trackpad of the logitech keyboard is actually a bad thing because I keep accidentally hitting it while typing and causing erroneous clicks that exit out of the text box. I don't understand your comment but If you are saying that it's inconvenient for you to charge the keyboard case on Logitech. My response would be that it's not a big of a deal at all., you don't even need to worry about it for like a month.
Great video ! Concerning the Logitech keyboard, I’ve read comments in other videos where people have had problems with the track pad disconnecting after a while of usage.
I saw where you were typing on the Magic Keyboard while on your ‘lap’ it looked as if the system was not well balanced and would fall backwards if you took your palms off the keyboard? Is it a device that is ‘tippy’ ? Thanks…
I’ve tried both. The apple keyboard is so much more compact and despite it being more “tippy” it’s easier to control on the lap while typing. Though if you’re just watching content, you can fold the logitech keyboard under and use as a more stable base in a triangle configuration. For you, I’d recommend the apple keyboard also. The logitech one just feels so much less premium.
I currently have a cheep folio and the Magic Keyboard that I carry with me and switch between - which is annoying. The main reason is I don't like using the Apple Pencil when the iPad is on upright on in the Magic Keyboard or flat on the table when it's not. Putting it into the folio, I can fold up in such a way it puts the iPad at a comfortable shallow angle for writing/drawing. Is there a way to use the Logitech case to do something similar?
I do NOT recommend this product if you are going to use the keyboard anywhere other than a perfectly flat area. Placing your hands on the keyboard when it’s on your lap slightly bends it and chaos ensues - your mouse either won’t click or starts clicking randomly and in weird places. HUGE disadvantage for someone like me who likes the versatility of using the device on the couch, in the car, or in lecture halls without desks. I’m currently debating returning the product :/
