Wim Hof: How To Use Cold Showers To Take Control Of Your Mind And Body

  • CAUTION ADVISED: This podcast contains swearing from the start.
How long could you last in a freezing-cold shower? And for how long could you comfortably, peacefully hold your breath? My guest today insists you can learn to do both for far longer than you think. And that by doing so, you can battle disease, regulate your mood and connect with your true self.
This podcast is a fascinating insight into the mind, work and charismatic personality of Wim Hof, aka The Iceman. Wim has been described as a ‘trailblazer for human potential’ and a ‘modern legend’, thanks to his incredible feats. They include withstanding extreme temperatures, climbing Kilimanjaro in nothing but shorts - even, as he describes to me, being injected with a toxin and resisting illness.
But he is no mere showman, there is method to what some might see as madness. Wim wants to convince people they too can do the ‘impossible’ and prove it through evidence-based science. Brain scans now indicate we can take conscious control of our autonomic nervous system. But this sort of ‘top-down’ regulation had been unknown in science before.
We talk about cold-water immersion - and why he believes that ‘a cold shower a day keeps the doctor away’. He explains that cold stimulates vascular muscle tone, increasing blood flow, slowing heart rate, increasing energy and lowering cortisol. Wim gives practical advice to help all of us build from a tense, 10-second blast of cold at the end of a shower, to comfortably showering cold for two to three minutes a day. And with benefits like reduced inflammation, improved cardiovascular function and immunity, reduced depression and anxiety.
Breathing techniques go hand in hand with his cold-water exercises, and we discuss how his particular practice can work to help us achieve peak functionality before endurance events, stressful times and more. Paradoxically, it involves over-breathing and breath-holding, to create a stressful spike in the body. Yet it results in a very tranquil sensation - and builds resilience to all kinds of stress, physical and mental, for the rest of the day.
At the end of this podcast, Wim kindly agreed to take me through one round of his technique, so you can give it a try with me and experience the effects for yourself.* It felt incredible, like accessing a different state of calm. I really hope you can feel the positive energy in this unique conversation.
CAUTION: If you have uncontrolled hypertension or heart disease it is not advised that you start practising cold water immersion. If you have any doubt at all as to whether you are fit enough to give this practice a go, please consult a qualified healthcare professional.

I am only on one small dose pill at bedtime for insomnia due to anxiety. I have done 33 days of cold showers twice everyday. I do the breathing exercises as well but am inconsistent. I am noticing a reduction in anxiety during the day. I am wondering if you threw away pills at the beginning or did it take some time? What was the time frame? Congrats!

I have attempted to meditate many times in my life and prior to this CD the only success I've experienced is with live guided meditation. th-cam.com/users/postUgkxzpa8CIfZcihW4Z0F_ja0QF3W9KIatrsq This is the first CD I've used that cuts through my unmedicated ADHD and enables me to truly relax and experience a quiet and energizing interval. The instructors voice is very soothing and pleasant to listen to. I am easily able to sit successfully through the entire CD, and for quite some time after. I cannot adequately express how tremendously helpful this CD has been on my spiritual journey!! Two thumbs up and 10 stars!

I am a woman in the winter of my life.. I find the best way to get used to cold showers is to gradually turn the cold water on little by little ... after doing this over the period of 10 days every day I now can’t wait to get into the cold shower .. So it's really good to hear him explain that. I take the one by Trace Minerals. Nutrex spirulina powder can also do a gentle detox and that helps greatly with inflammation. MSM powder by Source Naturals is AMAZING for pain and I also put organic turmeric in my morning tea..... I hope some of these things help you, since I can tell you really want to become well. • @artemisnite
      @artemisnite 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

@@ptrfarnan I had already begun a meditation regimen and learned to kind of go into that zen state. Only barely... Like 2%. But that's all you need. I'm not gonna lie, that first time when the water hit, my brain instantly said eff this and told me no damn way. But I just FORCED myself to take it. Went into my cave. And it actually started to feel warm for awhile. (This also happens in a tub of cold water I've discovered.) It does not happen anymore. But just doing it everyday makes it a little easier. I've tried railing against the cold. Like YOU AIN'T GONNA BEAT ME MFER! But that actually made it harder. Anger works against you in that respect. Gotta calmly remind yourself, you are not going to die. Start with just 20 seconds if you need to and increase.
Anyway, that first time was so freaking spiritual, after I'd dried off, I have never felt so relaxed in my life. That feeling kept me coming back, though like a drug it's never been so intense again.
Some days it's harder than others but overall it's getting easier. Fighting the candida that was feeding off the sugar and activating the Crohn's disease helped me to realize I am not alone in this brain. Mine is not the only voice in here. Don't listen to the voice that says you cant or that it's ok to take a day off. Know that you are the divine. You just decieved yourself that you're a mere human so you could experience this reality. Nothing can defeat you if you decide you are a victor.
      Good luck! ♥️💙♥️💙

This has to be my all time favorite Wim Hof interview.
When you were talking about the space between stimulus and response it reminded me of a Bruce Lee poem that I read when I was a kid that really struck me and stuck with me over the years. See below:
"Voidness is that which stands right in the middle between this and that. The void is all-inclusive, having no opposite--there is nothing which it excludes or opposes. It is living void, because all forms come out of it and whoever realizes the void is filled with life and power and the love of all beings". Bruce Lee.
Could that space between stimulus and response be the void?
Thanks for sharing your amazing interview.
    Big love, CK.

Great work Wim for publicizing the thing we can all do and benefits we can get. Glad they brought in the warning.
This form of hyperventilation blows off your CO2. Oxygen needs CO2(and acidity) to transfer from hemoglobin to your cells. It is phrased as oxygens binding affinity is inversely related to acidity and CO2 concentration. THis is known as The Bohr Effect* for anyone who want to look that up a little more.
Freedivers would be very familiar with this. Freediving is a great activity which also hack your biology through "mammalian dive response" which is also well worth looking at .Yes you can hold your breath longer, easier after this breathwork because the urge to breathe is triggered by CO2 build up, not oxygen running out.
The danger, with diving, is that you blackout, this is because your body will get the signal to breath quite late as it postponed the urge to breath signal into a level where you oxygen is actually close to running out... the phenomenon is called"shallow water blackout, so best not to do it for diving.
Even when you get good at it, or know it, the danger would still be there as you natural warning signal would not kick in. Tempting to use it but maybe best not too.
Great interview.. really enjoying your channel .. become the alchemist ! : )

I agree we are not taught to stay in command of our mind. At 18 I was diagnosed with a mental illness that I supposedly will have forever.Being traumatized by the events and this crazy diagnosis I could not accept it, for years I studied the illness and my own behavior with no meds. Long story short years later I now am in control of my emotions more then everyone I’m surrounded with. For me, because I have learned to control my response so much I feel a lot of people around me are the ones with the imbalance. How can imbalance people teach in balance people ? If that makes any sense. With a little bit of self reflection and a whole lot of forgiving of oneself happiness and mental clarity is achievable. Sometimes it’s a never ending journey with no reward but I love the process of being knowledge seeker and I get better everyday. Thank you for this video it’s so refreshing. I appreciate you.
