Warning - important message, please read carefully:
The breathing exercise has a profound effect and should be practiced in the way it is explained. Always do the breathing exercise in a safe environment (e.g. sitting on a couch/floor) and unforced.
Never practice the exercises before or during diving, driving, swimming, taking a bath or in any other environment/place where should you pass out, a serious injury could occur. Wim Hof breathing may cause tingling sensations and/or lightheadedness. If you’ve fainted, it means that you went to far. Take a step back next time.
The cold is a powerful force. We strongly advise to gradually build up exposing yourself to the cold. Always train without force and listen to your body carefully. If it is not practiced responsible, there is a risk of hypothermia.
Do not practice the method during pregnancy or when having epilepsy. Persons with cardiovascular health issues, or any other (serious) health conditions, should always consult a medical doctor before starting with the Wim Hof Method.

Lewis, I was drawn in to Wim Hof by a combination of doubt & curiosity. I am a doctor of medicine, a researcher prior to medical school. I have never been a strong breath holder but the first time I did his breathing exercises I was able to hold my breath for almost 2 minutes. I have been using Wim’s conditioning methods for almost a year. Every time I feel slightly ill or under the weather I perform these breathing exercises. I also do breath work now every morning & evening & I have a mental clarity & stamina as in the days of my youth. I am 62 & athletically out perform my sons & grandsons. I’m a believer!

11:55 this literally changed my life. I was suffering from extreme heartburn. You're probably thinking, "Heartburn? So what?" Well, it was so bad that I stopped eating solid foods for 5 months! Every time I tried to eat, I would get a really bad stomach ache and throw up what seemed like stomach acid and sometimes food. It was like my body lost the ability to properly breakdown food. I had to blend it and stay strictly on a liquid diet. I went to the hospital multiple times and they couldn't figure out what it was. I spent so much money and had so many tests done and nobody could find anything wrong with me. At the same time, I was dealing with other personal, financial, and health issues. It got to the point where I felt like I couldn't breathe FOR MONTHS! I had already been searching for heartburn relief techniques on TH-cam so I started looking for breathing exercises as well. I found Wim Hof's TH-cam channel and wow! I can finally eat again. I still haven't fully recovered and I've been doing it for about a month but now that I'm trying conscious breathing, I'm getting much better. Thank you Wim Hof!

I actually practiced this yesterday here in Michigan. I walked home from work in the freezing cold. It took 2 hours, when I focused on my breathing I literally forgot it was cold and a warmth came over my body. When I got home I was warm.

Damn I noticed that the other day before watching this podcast. Maybe a 20 min walk but I was tired and very cold at the start. I remember noticing by breath was a little faster than normal because of the cold. I did some meditation so I started to breath consciously and took full breaths. Damn I could feel the warm air going trough my throat and heating my body. I got home and my fingers which are usually always cold were actually warm as well.

I have just completed a three year challenge of cold showers, they are best if there is snow on the ground 3 degree C here in Holland. I go under the shower completely in one go including my head. After a short time + - 1 minute I can control my breathing. No problem in staying for 7/10 minutes depending on how much time I have. I have Artritis and I am 62 in May 2017. Thanks for sharing the video, now I have this breathing exercise to practice I can control how much this sickness effects me. I can do all the things I did when I was 30. Thanks again.

If you can control your breath under the ice cold you are less acidic and more alkaline and are in control and not at the mercy of stress, fear and weekness. This is so amazing to me. Life changing. "Having conceived of his purpose, a man should mentally mark out a straight pathway to its achievement, looking neither to the right nor the left. Doubts and fears should be rigorously excluded; they are disintegrating elements, which break up the straight line of effort, rendering it crooked, ineffectual, useless. Thoughts of doubt and fear never accomplished anything, and never can. They always lead to failure. Purpose, energy, power to do, and all strong thoughts cease when doubt and fear creep in."

I think I just fell in love. Thank you both. This is incredible. I just did the breathing exercise that you had done right before this podcast and holy shit. I also just did the 4 minute exercise and I was able to do 25 pushups and i'm a 39yr old femalel with no recollection of the last time I did A pushup, let alone 25. I'm not a sloth by no means but it's been a good minute (ie years) since working out on a regular basis. Wim is the bees knees and this podcast and you are the honey.

I have an enlarged heart. I've been told it won't return to normal; however, I've made some significant progress in healing through breathing, meditation and spirituality. My ejection fraction has gone from 25% to between 60-70% - normal is 50%. The cardiologists are amazed. I believe that, with this normal heart function, I will be able to completely heal. I've just been led to Wim Hof's breathing technique and I think this will carry me forward. I'm being cautious, but can already see progress and I'm very grateful to Wim Hof for having shared his gifts.

I learned of this breathing years ago and didn't know about him. Funny thing is people would say you're hyper ventilating yourself. Yes you could but I found that in order to know when you have reached a good spot to slow down and relax the breathing is the moment you reach the tingles and light headed feeling. Thats when you know you've reached the right spot to let yourself relax and even stop breathing for a moment. Its very relaxing and great for meditating. But I never knew that it could do all this stuff its very mind opening! No wonder I haven't been sick in years. Its all starting to make sense on all the experiences I have had using this breathing.

I stayed active as possible surfing, yoga, ate well. now later after to c secs Im disconnected by recti diastasis. I will come back better than ever after 42, overcome my MS with still no doctors, and look forward to this method. I remember when I was 9 I spent so much time swimming at the YMCA. I've been doing the method for a while now, 3 rounds of breathing in the morning, and I can honestly say it is life changing. There is an indescribable connection that you begin to develop with your body that is deeper than any meditation I've ever tried. Thank you Lewis and Wim!

      i just started today.

    • @silkydude
      @silkydude 7 ปีที่แล้ว +15

Sorry for the long response time! Here are the benefits I've had:
      1. after doing 3 rounds i am able to get into a meditative state very quickly that is deeper than anything I've ever experienced. Just close your eyes and watch after you do the method. you will be blown away.
      2. Stress goes way down. Along with a general feeling of euphoria and peace after. Ability to control mood and state a lot easier.
      3. Very hard to explain this. After the 3 rounds of breathing, using my attention I feel as if I am able to direct energy (not sure if its bloodflow or what) to different parts of my body. It's very weird but this builds a very deep mind body connection. It could be placebo though but it feels very real and incredible once you experience it.
these are the main 3 Ive experinced, hope that helps

I developed an anxiety after a situation with a college tutor, been trying to fix it for the last year, few months back gave up and took the anti depressants - which thankfully, I seem to be one of the few who dodges the side effects except for feeling exhausted nearly all day long, but it was better than the alternative.
Few weeks back got into cold showers as a form of building up stress resistance, then being a JRE fan i accidentally stumbled onto this wonderful man. His breathing technique freaked me out with how much it works in the cold and you just don't feel it really that much. But this, this has been a life saver, I've been watching this vid and doing it with them, and for the first time in a year I feel like myself again. Not saying it's a cure, but anything that works for the individual is always a good thing, albeit unfortunate for the ones it doesn't but if you're like me, give it a shot, it's better than the alternative.
    Thanks Hof!!

I swam in a lake here in the UK in mid October this year. It was the coldest water I'd ever been in. I wanted to get straight out really but there was this fisherman the other side of the lake so I felt I had to swim a little circle round for at least a minute (complete macho bullshit). I could feel my muscles shutting down as I reached the shore (yes it definitely can be dangerous) but the absolute intensity of euphoria / aliveness I felt when I got out was beyond anything I'd ever experienced. I live on a boat so this practice should be pretty easy for me. Thank you Wim for reminding me what I feel I've always known and thanks so much to you Lewis for bringing this to me. Great interview. Ive heard so many people they can easily do 5 or 6 minutes but once you plug the nose its way more difficult.
wim even says in some places he used to dunk his head under the cold water for 5 minutes . When you hokd your breath pinch your nose and tell us the time

    Update:
I think it's safe to claim that I made a shift to a state of remarkably reduced resistance lately. Apparently something to do with my adoption of Wim Hof's overbreathing/apnea workout technique. I started using it as a way to escape a fight/flight/freeze fit only hours after following along out of curiosity with the exercise demonstrated on Lewis Howes here between 12:40 and 20:00 The effect was jaw-dropping: First time just energizing and fun. Second time from desparately stressed out, violent and helpless to able-to-cry-it-off in like 3 minutes, returning calm and with a new, creative and helpful perspective on the trigger event/situation, oddly confident that the storm was really over and that I got what it takes to figure out whatever else might arise like never in weeks or even months or... EVER?!?!. I got kinda hooked immediately, genuinely looking forward to the next bout of despair to transform, and I got some opportunities for repetition soon after.
And it turned out to work on all kinds of distressful occasions: I breathed and worked off stuff like built-up strain, pain, anger, hurt, anxiety, and tonight it even gave me 2 hours of additional full-on present and cheery parental stamina right after I felt like going to bed before diner. The coincidence is evident, causality is still on trial. It might be Placebo (me being quite a persuasible hypochondriac), might bloody well be the supposed microdoses of endogenous DMT, though. I'll settle for the humble hypothesis that adrenaline isn't actually all that complicated to handle and that the the exercise mimicks what a feral rabbit does when it hops like a crazy Rocket bunny to discharge after freezing to hide from a stalking predator that wouldn't move on for waaay too long.
Pragmatically, the technique has done me no harm so far, probably unlocked a treasury, and simply feels rewarding anyway.
Thank you guys. You made my day(s) recently and the ripple effects on your account are immense.
