- Here's how to replace the inside door handle found on many Chevrolet and GMC SUVs and trucks. The video here shows replacing a 1999 Suburban's passengers handle.
I purchased the replacement handle in the video from Amazon for $13 with free shipping. amzn.to/2yIDxO4
You only need...
Two flat head screwdrivers
#12 1 in sheet metal screw
Drill with a 1/8 to 3/16 dill bit
Pliers (Long-nose would be best)
Hex head screwdriver or ratchet (for the two screws in the arm rest. some models use Phillip heads instead.)

This is absolutely the easiest way to replace the door handle. It took me 25 min. Thanks!!!
You don't know how long I had to roll my window down... Thank u bro.. u get right to the point and talk and record very clearly and visibly.. thanks again you just saved me a lot of cash I didn't have
The driver side handle just broke in my 1996 Tahoe after owning it for 15 years. Thank you for your video. I'll be tackling this repair very soon.
Thank you so much. I used this video to repair my 97 GMC two years ago and spent an hour searching for this same one today to fix the drivers side. This is the best video ever and I found it again. I will save it this time for future repairs.
very cool! spent about $19 on the part including shipping and installed it myself with the excellent video instructions.
Great. You didn't have to dismantle the entire door panels like in other videos. Thank you friend.
Dislikes are from GM/Chevy dealership repair shops
This is the BEST video on TH-cam. I was apprehensive about tearing my door off but I watched this video, ordered the part from eBay for $8.95 + shipping, then watched this two more times and tackled it. The whole process took less than 30 minutes and then it didn't work. But I discovered I had inadvertently locked the door, unlocked it and then opened and closed it about 10 times in shock and amazement. Mine was the driver side and it is a 1997 so I will watch this again in 21 years and replace it again. Many thanks. I especially like how you say "grommet" which is a little different than we say it in Texas.
Lifesaver. I started feeling sorry for myself, because my Suburban was outside, and then, when I went back to look at the video again, I realized the friendly fixer was out in the snow. I ordered my '97 truck cheaply, and it has a manual window crank.
This video was spot on! I got mine done in less than 1 hour. That included a run to the auto store for the courtesy bulb. Only detail I would add is I used a 7mm socket for the arm rest at 1:07. I used a 1.5 inch sheet metal screen that was 5/16ths to replace the drilled out pop rivet. That's what I had laying around. 10 out of 10 video
In my younger years as a body and fender repairman I removed many inner door panels and had a tool specifically designed to get under the perimeter door panel clips. Couldn't find it to replace the door handle today. I found that a claw hammer works very well for this especially on the front ones. Push the claw in and straddle the clip then lever it out just as you would a nail.
Thanks now I have an understanding of what's involved when doing my '97 drivers door .. You got to love you tube with sharing info. like this. This is what you tube should be used for...keep up the good work..
Saved me a ton of money as I had to replace both sides door handles. Honestly could not have done it without your instructions... No way, no how. Can't thank you enough!
Best video on the subject I've seen. Good work. Thanks.
Thank you for posting this. It was just what I need to fix my door handle on my 99 GMC Suburban C1500 SLT. Only difference was it was my driver's side and instead of a plastic grommet there was a metal rivet. Again, thank you!
Perfect video, I had been putting off replacement of my 99 suburban door handle.. Took less than 30 min to do..........pdm
I got the part for $18 at Amazon, very thankful for the great video. Great job!
FYI for anyone doing this: the correct replacement rivet(it's not a grommet) for this repair is: an aluminum 3/16" x 1/4" rivet.
The best and simplest video I have seen for this procedure !!!!! Thank you!
Thank you for taking the time to post this vid...I had to do this on THREE doors on our suburban..saved me a lot of money doing it myself...
I just replaced my inside door handle with the help of this video! Thank you very much for posting!
This video was very good,I am 74 and I found it very easy. Well done.
I used a dandelion digger with some of the metal shaft wrapped in cloth to carefully pop the plastic clips out and saved all of them going slowly and getting underneath each clip. After popping out the window/lock/mirror/speaker and disconnecting just the speaker I set the door panel on a 2 step stepladder located just under the door and it rested just fine so I didn't have to disconnect all of the electronics. I used a 5/8 inch #12 sheet metal screw for the replacement. Great video, very helpful!
Awesome video. I fixed mine in under an hour for the cost of the $15.95 part. The shop wanted $150. I did break one of the brackets that hold the pins in, but there are about eight of them, so the panel still fits tightly.
Awesome, now I can finally quit the "I need to roll down the window manually to open the door club"
sturmtiger305mm SAME LOL
sturmtiger305mm Me too! I have a '99 Escalade...same exact issue.
But do you really ever leave the club?
I have a similar problem with my passenger door that I haven’t fixed yet but for the time being I have to be a gentleman to all my passengers because the window doesn’t work
It took over a year, but I finally got around to fixing it, LOL!
this was very helpful. i have paid people in the past to change the door handles on my truck, but i decided to try it for myself. with the use of your video i was able to do it myself. Thanks!!!
My '99 Tahoe did the same thing...I know where to get my part, my biggest concerns were the linkages. Now that you showed how to do it I am more confident now on replacing it without calling someone else to do it. Thanks, it was good informative video.
Fantastic. Everything is on TH-cam! I've had the replacement handle for my 99 Suburban for months, but didn't know how to take the door apart.
Thanks sir - saved me some time in guess work by watching you. Appreciate it!
Could not have done it without you...THANKS!!
Thank you for creating this video; it really helped me replace the handle on my vehicle. I noticed while installing the new handle assembly that the rivet left a large hole behind in the door's sheet metal, whereas the replacement assembly didn't seem to have enough room for the size of screw needed to fit the rivet's hole. I got around this by drilling/installing a smaller screw in the upper-right region of the assembly (on a driver's side door -- the mirror opposite of the passenger-side assembly in the video). Thanks again for the informative video!
I also noticed on my vehicle that the linkage for the window was bent and rubbing against the rod running from the door handle to the latch, requiring a harder pull on the handle in order to open the door. Perhaps this led to the handle splitting in two. After bending the window linkage back into place, the door opens easily without much effort on the handle.
THANK YOU every step went just perfect, really appreciate what you've done here!
I needed to replace both handles...Finally getting to it.....on my 96 Suburban. This video was great! Thank you.
I've gotta do this on all 4 of my 1999 suburban doors. This is really helpful thank you.
Thanks- this was just what I needed. Saved me from breaking several parts getting the old handle out.
Thank you for the video! I ordered the door handle from Amazon (for less than $12), then followed your video to install it. What a big help. I sure do appreciate your efforts.

Thank you for taking the time to do this video...well done and good filming.
Dude you're a boss! This video made that job cake! Only had one hickup. Taking the plastic shroud off around the handle there's a fourth clip in the front. Mines gone now but didn't change a thing. Thanks again brother!
nice video I appreciate you showing those helpful tips. I have a 1999 GMC Yukon. and it's amazing how simularities in your vehicle and mines are.. this was super helpful because I have to change change the drivers side door handle inside and outside, lucky for me I bought this truck was a one owner vehicle and it runs perfect. the truck has 176,000 miles on it.
Awesome video! Your tutorial was very good and straight up, thanks again and much appreciated...! 👌👍👌👍
Great video thanks so much! I generally dread these kinds of repair but you made it very doable!!
All the steps I needed. Saved me alot of time and some money. Thanks FoxKnowHow.
Ahhh..thank you..have a 99 tahoe LH door handle broke...found one on ebay for $9...replaced within an hour...thanks again..great video...saved me from going to a shop...
Very good presentation. Excellent audio and video work. I have to replace the driver side handle and hope it's as easy. Thanks!
Perfect! Worked identically for 2000 Yukon Denali
Good video, thank you. A few years ago i bought a low cost outside door handle for my Blazer on-line. After a few weeks it broke ("Made In Taiwan"). I wound up getting another one at my local Chevy dealer and it works fine.
Dude, you did this in the snow! It's 43 degrees in Houston and I'm waiting for warmer weather 🤣🤣
This really helped me the clips that you pry open were holding the panel on and i didn't see until i watched your video,THANKS
Great job!!. I ordered the parts today. Thank you
I don't like taking door panels off but with your video it made it easier. I was able to replace the broken handle and we are good to go! I would not have tried to do this without your video so you saved me some $ and the hassle of taking it to be repaired. Thanks again for making and posting this.
Thank you so much for the video, it saved me appx $90 & gave me great satisfaction to do my own repair! I combined your video with one other & got the job done. The info on the #12 sheet metal screw saved me! (Todd’s wife>>the new mechanic)
Awesome video. Did it in about 20 minutes start to finish. Thanks!
I replaced mine on a 2000 Cadillac Escalade. Thank you for the video.
Hey Fox,
HUGE thanks for the video and part info! Thanks to you I saved lots of money and tons of time.
Best,
R
Just used the video to replace my drivers side. Easy easy.
Thank you
Nice video. That really helped me avoid damaging it
very professional, you made it look simple
To make getting the plastic parts off the actuators easier, I took a small torch to it and melted the plastic. Worked perfectly 👍
Thanks so much. I'm now ready to replace the driver' side in my'96 Silverado. Funny how all these plastic parts behave after 18 years.
Excellent How-To video! Thanks, @FoxKnowHow.
I just removed the door handle from the back passenger door on my tahoe and it worked great. ✌
Man You make it look so easy I wish you were close by I would pay you to fix my inside door handle
Thanks for your posting! Very detailed sharing.
Worked like a charm. Thank you!
Great video! And, I must add, I really liked seeing the snow flakes coming down! At first I didn't realize what it was, but then it hit me, it's SNOW! haha! I've been in Florida a long time I guess, been almost 20 years since I've seen snow! But again, very good video, great information!
Wow, that was easy, thanks for posting this.
Very helpful. Just did mine as I watched your video. Thanks.....
Awesome video and cool sound effects lol!
It's amazing to me that they wouldn't build the small metal linkage slightly stronger to prevent this VERY common problem. Who knows though. They might build it purposefully weak at that point to protect the other door linkages that might be harder to replace. Thanks for the video, saved me some time figuring it out.
Thanks for the help, it worked good.
Great video, instructional but you made it look like a straightforward job that I can do, and I did. I make instructional videos as a side business and this is top-notch. Thank you.
Awesome video. Great tips 👌. Thanks
Thank you so much for your help!! You saved me a 100 dollars!
thanks so much for this video!! Saved me a bunch of time.:)
Thank you so much for the fantastic video !!!!!

this video helped so much. thank you.
Thank You Mr. “know how” 😜 Appreciate your video, thanks!
This is great this is something I need to do also this is the 2nd time my driver's door handle is broken 10 years. I was wondering do you know how or do you have a video that I couldn't find on your videos list of how to replace the power brake booster in a 97 suburban?
Thanks it helped tremendously!
This is exactly what I need to do to my 96 Sub.
Thanx.
So I live in MI and we just got hit with a shit ton of snow, so today I went outside to warm up my truck and there was a huge ass drift on my drivers side...so i went in through the passenger side and it was Iced over I opened my door and broke the ice off no problem then I started my truck shoveled the drift away and then tried opening the door from the inside figuring id have better push in their...well as I did that the door handle clicked and then just wobbled...and the outside handle isn't working either...Is their a whole other posses for the outside handle as well?
Thanks ! greatings From Poland ;)
Outstanding! Thank you!!
Thank you for your help. Greatly appreciated.
Thanks for the video, I have the exact issue.
Huge help thanks
Do I need to replace the plastic clips or are they reuseable?
very informative, thankyou.
What size and type screw did you use in place of the rivet? Great video and thanks
Thanks this was very helpful :)
Thanks, This has saved me money. The GMC dealer wanted $90 to fix mine.
I followed this vid exactly and had it done in the time of vid about 8 min this job takes
Thanks for the info!
Could this issue also make the door so it won't lock? I'm tryna figure out some stuff. I have a 99 suburban and the passenger door opens regardless if it's locked or not does this door handle being broke play a part in that or would you think it's the lock?
worksmagic89 You probably have already fixed this,,,, but my guess is the rod going to the lock has came off.
Happened to me once, after using a "slim Jim" to unlock the door.
thank you much for direction on product
