    Thankyou very much, very interesting and a great test.
    It seems there is a compromise with the Wolfgang's, they opted for looks and sickness at the expense of durability. I've found this with waxes and sealants I've used.
    Also some waxes (particularly oily ones) that are easy to apply don't last that long.
    I wish you good health and success with your channel.

    The database of comparison tests on your website is a great reference tool and I find it very useful. Here are a couple ideas to further refine your testing criteria: Appearance is really important and I think the appearance category could be expanded to include 2 points instead of just one point. Perhaps 1 point for enhancing color and depth of the paint and 1 point for visual “pop” or best visual appeal. Dust collection is another criteria that could be included. You could shake a dusty towel over the panel and then blow it off with a leaf blower on a low speed to simulate dust being removed while driving. You could then compare the two products to see which released the most dust and kept the paint cleaner.

    • @DmitrysGarage
      @DmitrysGarage  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the detailed feedback John, I have been thinking about similar dust tests as well. My big challenge is how to make them repeatable such as what type of dust to use, i.e. pollen is different than concrete dust which is different than brake dust. I'm definitely thinking about how to set this up and make a good test. I'll consider splitting up pop vs. depth/color, there may be some consistency we could apply there. Thank you for watching!

    Here are my thoughts & questions, you are comparing a sealant to a wax, is that apples to oranges? Shouldn't you compare a wax to a wax or a sealant to a sealant? Or is that just a marketing tool they use? Do you use the same wash mitt on both sides of the hood? Could that cause cross contamination?

    • @DmitrysGarage
      @DmitrysGarage  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks for watching! Wax, sealant, coating, etc.. have generally accepted industry definitions, but are also marketing terms at the consumer level. A company might call their product a wax for recognition on store shelves. Traditionally wax means organic material based wax, like carnauba wax. High end waxes were always very thick and deep looking, but not very durable. Sealants generally mean synthetic polymer based wax and they promised greater durability over their organic predecessors. Ceramic coatings are meant to be semi-permanent products using SiO2 technology. I would classify both the products in the video as sealants as that is the category they fit the best. Neither is purely organic nor semi-permanent.
      There are hybrid products that may use several types of technologies, for example an organic wax, a synthetic polymer, and silicon dioxide. This is the case with the Meguiar's product in this video since it uses montan wax derived from coal, a polymer sealant, and SiO2. They threw the kitchen sink into this formula. There are other products that refer to themselves as a coating or coat but use no SiO2. There is ultimately no regulatory standard and all three types of product are pretty much claiming to do the same sort of thing, i.e. be slick, glossy, improve the look of paint, repel water, and protect paint.
      As far as cross contamination, I do not believe it is a significant issue. Primarily because these products all contain some kind of solvent or other carrier fluid by which they deliver the wax/sealant/coating onto the paint. That dries/flashes/cures and provides a very thin remaining layer over the paint. That layer doesn't spread anymore, it's cured and hardened at room temperature. The washing action primarily affects that layer through abrasion and chemical reactions with the surfactants in the shampoo. The shampoo I use is fairly mild based on the ingredients in it's SDS sheet and my testing. There are probably traces of the products mixing on the pad, but at this point they're not able to stick to the paint as they're cured/hardened and also a very small amount since the layer in question is so thin.

      Have you delved into SiO2 “technology”? I’d love to understand exactly what it is.

    • @DmitrysGarage
      @DmitrysGarage  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FrankGutowski-ls8jt My understanding is they use organosilicon compounds and sort of just market them as SiO2. Similar to Graphene vs. Graphite Oxide. Some of the popular ones are octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane, decamethylcyclopentasiloxane, etc.. These are used in conjunction with petroleum distillates and other polymers and resins to deliver the coating to the paint. My understanding is that silanols, siloxanes and siloxides structurally provide hydrophobicity when they form groups on top of the paint. To your cake mix analogy in the other post, I believe the combination of ingredients, their ratios and overall formulation is what largely affects efficacy.

      I would just go with a spray then, I really like Wolfgang Uber SiO2 Silica Spray, Turtle Wax Seal N Shine and Xtreme Solutions Poly-Seal. I would say the Wolfgang is the best in terms of looks and durability, but it's going to be slightly less forgiving if you leave high spots than the other two, but still VERY easy to use, just make sure you wipe it all off. The Turtle Wax SnS is very very easy to use, very durable and you can't really mess up much, but it's not that great looks wise. The Xtreme Solutions Poly-Seal is really pretty, super easy to use, but just not as durable as the others, it's definitely the weakest durability wise, but very pretty.

    I have used Wolfgang's Deep Gloss Sealant for the past four or so years and still think its great. The car I use it on, is now parked outside and occasionally covered by a car cover. I took a trip through the rain this weekend and even though I haven't applied more Wolfgang's for at least 10 months, water is till beading perfectly. I still have plenty left, but seeing as you are rating their SiO2 slightly higher, do you see any reason going with the SiO2 if the Deep Gloss working so well for me? Also, its my "beater," so I am mostly interested in protection than "amazing gloss." My new car gets more of the love, now, and have been getting great results from Meguiar's Xpress Spray Wax on top of my ceramic coating.

    • @DmitrysGarage
      @DmitrysGarage  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think the SiO2 version will give you more durability. As far as being worth it, it just depends on how you feel about the cost. You can get the wolfgang deep gloss in a big bottle which makes it cheap by the ounce. Personally for more durability there are other products out there such as the Soft99 Fusso, especially the old formula, which will beat the Wolfgang SiO2, but it isn't as pretty looking.

The Uber SiO2 is a very great spray silica sealant, if you want way more durability, looks and slickness, the uber SiO2 silica spray is top of my charts. Daniel, I would say just start with one product after washing and fully cleaning your painted surfaces. You can late experiment with stacking waxes on top of sealants or coatings. Typically the harder/more durable product goes on first followed by the topper product. So usually sealant under wax. But really just work out your process with one product to get started, I'd start with a liquid sealant or a spray sealant/wax with high durability: dmitrysgarage.com/wax

    • @DmitrysGarage

      Thanks for watching! Its just glass with a black backing underneath. The problem with clear coat is that it is inconsistent due to being sprayed on. The readings have a higher margin of error across the surface. Glass is very consistent and gives much more reliable numbers. In fact the gloss meter itself is calibrated against a similar piece of glass with a black backing. The results are very similar to automotive paint but more accurate and easier to measure.

      @@DmitrysGarage Hi Dmitry, if I choose to go ahead with Wolfgang Si02, May I please ask you what would the best Wolfgang topper (or other than Wolfgang)/ quick detailer to be used over WOLFGANG Si02 Paint Sealant after maintenance wash? Also do you think that wet/ gloss look would be the same or better than traditional Wolfgang Deep Gloss? Your opinion is greatly appreciated and will help me a lot to make a right decision. Thanks heaps again

      I think the deep gloss 3 is wetter looking to my eye. As for a topper, I generally dont use them. I use a normal waxless quick detailer when needed and waxless shampoos. The reason is i want the qualities of the specific wax to work. Part of durability is not having to top it off. Id rather wait for it to wear off and redo it. Now some people do like toppers and ill start testing them so my mind may change over time.

      @@DmitrysGarage Appreciate your opinion Dmitry! After all what you said I think I'll stick to Wolfgang Deep Gloss even though it's pretty old formula but seems like gives compromised results including some durability, gloss, shine and great wetter look. When Fusso might be a bit overwhelming for summerish Australian condition lacking some shiny look and eventually harder to strip off.

    so IPA will strip these waxes alone?

      @DmitrysGarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yea IPA, especially high proof, will damage or strip most waxes, sealants and coatings given enough exposure.

      @@DmitrysGarage have you ever seen it bubble the clear cote if used at too high of a dilution ratio?

    • @DmitrysGarage
      @DmitrysGarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@anth115 I have never seen that, IPA is not able to dissolve clear coat. I wouldn't use acetone or other solvents, but IPA is fine to use to decontaminate a panel. I wipe down car panels with IPA all the time when paint correcting, before applying a coating.
