I've got an S40 with the same problem. They charge out the ass for those PCV components, so it's buyer beware, if you're looking for a used model Volvo that has this setup. They wanted $369 for a parts kit to repair mine. I got most of the parts (minus 1 long hose that is $177) for $80 on RockAuto. It's the labor that makes people scrap these cars, because that's in addition to the absurd parts prices and scarcity. Thanks Mike & Ant, for showing me the in's & out's of this system, and giving me the courage to tackle mine!
I once owned a V70. It was absolutely solid mechanically, not a spot of rust anywhere. My ford focus in comparison was a blob of rust. The problem was that all of the plastic crumbled. The plastic dashboard literally broke away from the bulk head / firewall. If you could deal with the creaking if old brittle plastic, it would reliably take you anywhere. But the fatal blow was the fuel economy of 19mpg. It had to go.
That was an electric pump not a mechanical. Rebuild kits for these turbos are cheap. Ditch the pcv for a good catch can that vents to atmosphere. The pcv system isn't as green as you may think. Especially if and when the valve sticks and let's oil blow by to be burnt. But hey this is tv.....
When I bought my Volvo V70T2 P2 / 2007 in 2016, I knew that the PCV system was clogged up and I knew the possible consequences: It might blow the shaft seal in the crankshaft gearbox end. Changing this ~US$ 30 seal is VERY time consuming. Thus, the PCV parts were immediately changed to new ones. It turned out that the PCV system was totally closed by oil/water gunk. Believe me, changing the PCV system is much less time consuming (or much cheaper if you ask your mechanic to do it) than changing the shaft seal.
"And reattach the waste gate actuator arm" - *reattaches turbo oil feed line* "I disconnect the coolant hoses" - *disconnects fuel lines from fuel rail* That's some really awful editing you got going on there; that or he just plain forgot what he was doing when over dubbing.
"I disconnect the coolant hoses" - disconnects fuel lines from fuel rail. Yeah...I saw that too. I hope no watches this and takes the fuel return line off their 850 thinking its a coolant hose! Here's another thing I noticed; only because I've owned the same car for 6 years ('97 850R) and done the pcv on mine, and did the PCV on the '95 850 turbo I had for a couple years before the "R". It looks like the PCV hose shown at 6:52 has no noticeable blockage. It will usually clog up with dried oil in the two ports on the engine where the box mounts to the engine.
Definitely dumbed down... In the full programme (I refuse to say "show") a damaged seat is mentioned at the beginning, then never referred to again, the wheels/tyres are not mentioned, and a bad dent shown just below the side window line would not have been repairable with the hooks like the door dents. In fact when the car is finished you never really see it in close up, just being ragged round a track.
Hello, I need answer to the question what will happen if I cut the hose coming from the head, close the part going to the separator and vent the part coming from the head to the atmosphere by extending it and putting filter at the end of it? I'm about to do it and I can't find any information on someone else who's done it. The reason is that the pcv system in my v40 is clogged and the mechanics in my area do not acknowledge that kind of maintenance. They tried to rip me off with engine rebuild. I don't feel comfortable trying to replace the pcv system myself due to lack of experience and fear of mistake.
I have had 4 Volvos (1963 & 65 122s, 1971 164, 1982 240DL) and 2 Saabs (1967 96 V4 wagon, 1986 900). Other than 1971 Volvo 164, which was a hit and run magnet, none were reliable.
To check to see if you need a PCV system. Put a rubber glove over oil filler neck with rubber band. Start car...if the rubber glove inflates you need to replace. If it doesnt and has vaccuum...you ok. It's not a hard job..
Stop whining about Ed - I miss him too, but this guy does the job very well too. Imagine you doing all the hard work and getting just complains in return, caused by things you had no influence on.
Just watched this and thought mike brewer ripped that young lady off !!! He’s a wheeler dealer but he should of bought it for 8 grand !!!! Lost abit of respect for him !!!
Do you guys want a 850r manual?..........no shit it's sitting on my drive rotting away doing sweet F/A I just can't be arsed with it, I'm a builder definitely no mechanic 😂👍
No. Because I stopped watching when Edd left LOL .. Only reason I'm here is for the Volvo 850 .. Can't explain it, but it is one of my most favorite cars ....
I saw the whole program, a small segment to a turbo hot side swap and the rest of Ant's work was a bit of dent removal and most dedicated to the easiest job (which they made out was actually the hardest)of swapping the PCV, so who's the shit for brains now, I could go on about how they called an oil pipe a waste-gate actuator, or calling a fuel pipe a coolant pipe.
I’ve enjoyed the new format with ant, but this episode was the worst so far! First the young lady wanted $10,000 Mike gives her $7,000! He thinks he’s so good ripping off the poor girl, he normally meet them in the middle but not this time! Goes back to ant bragging he stole it! They don’t do a great deal to it, it reminded me of some of Edd’s last shows when he losses interest and Mike has to finish them off. Well this is what happens in this episode, Ant goes MIA ??? Maybe he’s getting sick of Mike already!
Ant, you didn’t show anything which would help a home mechanic. There was only clicks, whirrrs, trrrs, clacs there and there which doesn’t teach anything. Please watch some Edds lectures and try to show the same. I can’t help it but it looks that you have no experience in car servicing. But that’s OK. Most of the home mechanics are unexperienced too. Just try to show how the component is supposed to loose. Show every screw and show how you unscrew those and not those clickwhirrclacks. Only lay people like those but not home mechanics. As you see, everybody is missing Edd. It is of course his personality but also the skill how he SHOWS everything. He shows how to reach a bolt and in what angle you must keep your wrench and how you disassemble the gizmo and what there is inside and what must be changed etc.
All of that interesting stuff is gone because producers think that fast pace is what people want. It's not. It's what producers want, because it's cheaper.
You can change an 850 T5 or R PCV system quicker than changing the Turbo, I should know! This is an amateur video, You should have mentioned that the lower bolt section of the inlet manifold is slotted so the lower bolts only need to be slackened off! Yes, Volvo thought out a lot of the maintenance stuff on the 850 which you do not recognise, Most probably why the job took you so long! Also the Turbo end float looked excessive and you are pulling off a fuel line stating it is a coolant line, The mind boggles! Unsubscribed from this shit.
So nice to find a California car that’s never seen snow and salt. Doing this job up north is always full of surprises.
CT resident. 4 volvo 850s and I’ve never broken a bolt
And not one siezed bolt.
Buy on FCP EURO. Oem parts for pcv and lifetime replacement../ also clean out the engine ports that connected to the catch can..
I miss ed

T5R not TR-5 guys.
Actually it's T-5R
No Its Volvo 850 T-5R
Haha wasn't that a Triumph TR5? Lol

Yeah volvo 850R with T5 engine 850 T5-R
Who doesn't like Mr Wacky with his hand and face gestures.
Clean the engine ports also, thats where the gunk builds up.
The misspelled T-R5 is driving me nuts! Please correct it to say T-5R. Thanks!
Yea it's a bit disrespect full to Volvo and the fans of Wheeler dealers. SO please correct it to T5-R !!!!
Love the show! Ant's hands are always clean!!!
probably washes them in the parts cleaner!
@Rob Yorkshire pathetic
Ant is doing an awesome job!! Keep it up mate

The pcv system is probably the most overlooked part that's why

It's called the rear main seal
a V70T2?
Loved it, great job Ant. This format of content I love.
Best car I've ever driven
We used to have one years ago. Wish we never got rid of it. Was an absolute flying machine!
If i have done this 1 or 2 times when working at Volvo 15 years. Jepp
"And reattach the waste gate actuator arm" - *reattaches turbo oil feed line*

Well spotted

The garage sequences are now filmed like a coffee advert.
Dunno about these but I did the auto gearbox and turbo on a V70R. Biggest bastard of a thing I've ever had the displeasure of working at
I liked the other tall bloke, but this geezer is perfect for the job and the show. Well done chaps.
totally agree
He ain't bad but he still ain't Edd
Very entertaining episode, great job Ant! Volvo 850 T-5R FTW.

Ant made the PCV out to be an awful job. It's cake, my car is the poster child for the most viewed write-up on the process.
Good job and very very nice Volvo .
I Like ed but ant is very good and he does a good job explaining things. like the show Mike.
T5R actually
PCV systems has been standard in many years
Over here in Britain I think we used to call them dump valves.. dumping the air out
That hot side came off really easily for some reason?
🤣
Disconnect the coolant hose.. Fuel line....Fit the waste gate...connects coolant hose....
It seems like every episode is him fixing turbos
Where's edd ?
Perfect engine for a Lotus Esprit.
How do you watch the full show?

Yet another series being shown in the US before the UK. Why?
because they are dumber to watch this shit
Knows so much about them, gets title wrong on upload...
We had a Volvo 850 T5 wagon wich achieved a top of 310 km/h.
Plus, it's T5-R!
Drunk Woomy proof please

Contact Atlas Copco to service your compressor...blue light on means time to service!
And AC were one of the sponsors!!
I wish he would pop around to mine and show me how to restore my MR2 live!! 😂😂😂
Does anyone else feel cheap and dirty when they watch the new Wheeler Dealers without Ed China?
Agree this is naff
No. Because I stopped watching when Edd left LOL .. Only reason I'm here is for the Volvo 850 .. Can't explain it, but it is one of my most favorite cars ....
I don't have a 50000 F.A.D. air tank to pressure test my turbo!!! Maybe I could use a cheap vacuum cleaner in reverse😋
That would work. Turbine would spin slowly if there was nothing major wrong.
Your ok Ant, but I (and a lot of people) just miss Ed. We might as well watch the rest of the American car dross.
heres one i removed earlier -
Not sure what a Volvo T-R5 is, but I can tell you that dedicating nearly the whole program to a relatively simple PCV change was shameful.
Lol you are a clown. Well done. This isn't the whole program shit for brains. This is an ad for a 47 minute long TV show. Hahahahahahahahahaha
