The reason for the lack of torque steer lies in the way Volvo designed the axles. Since the transmission is offset to the drivers side, if power went straight from the transmission to the wheels, you'd have one axle shaft far longer than the other. They used an intermediate shaft on a bearing to make it so that each outer axle was the same length. Simple and well engineered.
THIS, they have a fully electronic chassis, haldex AWD, and a turbo 5-pot with 300hp stock. Also the weirdest shifter probably ever to be mounted on a production car.
Yeetimus you’re talking about the newer spa and cma platform with a 2.0 twin charged system. The i5 and Si6 make nowhere near 300 crank. I don’t know what you mean by fully electric chassis since most Volvo’s sold do not have magnetic ride control as it a $1k option from the dealer

Man that wagon is awesome! It's very rare in the US to find a manual transmission in a FWD white Block motor. I have been a Volvo fan for a while. My first Brick was a Blue 85' 240 Wagon with a 2.3L 4cyl, 4 speed pushing 86hp. It wasn't long before I feel down the rabbit hole of Brick tuning and had imported a motor, harness and ECU from Italy to swap in a 2.0L B204GT, DOHC turbo motor making 200hp. Once you fall down the rabbit hole and obsess over rear wheel drive 80s and 90s Volvos. They can be the most fun of all cars for tuning because they built so many versions of the Redblock motors all over the world for so many applications for so long you can mix and match parts to build a 400+hp motor using all factory parts. Forged lower internals, cupped pistons, sleeved blocks, internal channeled water cooled heads, 24V DOHC heads, sodium filled valves, oil squirters to cool pistons!!! Volvo did crazy cutting edge stuff that you can now salvage, clean up and race for pennies out of junk yards!! You can build 4 cylinder crazy high boost turbo Redblocks pushing 400+hp and 5cyl Whiteblocks pushing 700+hp that can go toe to toe with Toyota JZ or Nissan RB motors for a fraction of the price.
Saw a lowmiled T-gul (t-yellow) yesterday, you don't see them anymore, it put a smile on my face. Fun fact, when the 850 debuted, it was the world's safest car thanks to strong A-pillars and side impact protection 🤘🇸🇪

So many good memories with this car. I had a 97 Volvo 850 wagon for a long time after getting rid of my first car (also a Volvo wagon). I would do e-brake skids way to much in it haha. I thought it was one of the coolest looking Volvo's ever, the perfect balance between boxy but not super boxy. Just wish mine was a turbo like that one♥️
How...why was there no mention of the BTCC 850 Wagon dominating BTCC. “It sounds very similar to the 5-cylinder Focus RS they got in Europe” (Not an actual quote but pretty close) THAT IS BECAUSE IT ALMOST IS THE SAME ENGINE the B5234T evolved in to the B5254T, that Ford stole for the mk2 RS. Fun fact, the power train for the mk2 Focus RS was completely Volvo developed with software from Bosch and is basically the same as in the engine as the one in the P2R. Ford Ruined Volvo. The mk2 Focus RS is sore point for many Volvo purist like me, Ford didn’t let Volvo have the R and limited the 5-cylinders power out put so it wouldn’t compete with the “British built 6-cylinder trashcan, short i6 engine which the forced upon Volvo”, and then Ford took the 5-cylinder and had the audacity to not only steal a power plant that should have been in a Volvo but put it in their own car, no they took the extra step and got Volvo Torslanda to develop it completely, together with Bosch. That is one of the many reasons why i hate Ford and dislike Americans.
@@r.five.3 almost every American I have hade the unfortune to encounter, have been loud, rude and extremely entitled. They in 9 of 10 cases does not respect the locals and local way of doing things and often demand that things be done the American, just for them.
In the late '90s, my parents wanted to buy a used Volvo wagon. They also came across a Volvo 850R and thought about it. But ultimately they picked a Volvo 960 with maxed out full everything. It makes slightly less power than the 850R, but the 900 series is a bit larger than the 850 and my parents were specifically looking for a large family car. If you say, the 850R's 5-cylinder sounds like a Viper V10, I'd say the 960's 6-cylinder sounds like a Rolls-Royce V12. It's more cultivated and without the aggressive note, but it's still a powerful engine and a reasonably fast car for being an unassuming wagon
Sounds better with the cutout closed. Damn these engines are amazing. I absolutely LOVE my C30 T5 R-Design. I have the k16 turbo, D080 inter-cooler, 3inch down-pipe and exhaust, and a custom tune profile. I slam down 450hp to the ground. Best car I've ever owned.
I’ve got a 16T turbo I’m about to toss on my 850 T5, I can’t wait. My turbos wastegate broke and stopped making boost, so I just bought a bigger turbo💀
I used to have a 850R sedan its my favorite car ive ever owned. I had a bigger turbo, exhaust downpipes etc... it was fun to drive and suprised alot of cars when Id pass them
When you really think about it, a Viper V10 and the Volvo 5 Cylinder. All have the same firing/ignition order (hence why they sound similiar). One engine is bigger, has 2X more cylinders while the other is the "European friendly" version, Small and Sporty (lightweight).
I'm alive today because of my Volvo 740 turbo wagon! I have since acquired a mirror image of it to replace it, but stopped working on it because of electrical problems and it's been sitting in the back of my shop... I miss driving a fast Volvo! I really need to work on that thing again, and finish it up!
I just got one, and I find under about 2k it sounds like a 4 cylinder boxer engine. It's absolutely sublime how it feels smooth and violent at the same time. It's like getting into a fist fight with a drunk Mike tyson wearing sockem boppers covered in velvet even in stock form. And every once in a while I get the knowing nod and smile from people.
I mean it is one bank of the v10 so it makes sense that it would sound a bit like one. I had a straight piped 850 Turbo and it sounded like a v8 at idle and a lonely howl at WOT. I took that car from 175k to about 225k miles (the odometer always quits), signed it over to my buddy when I moved and it's still going strong in Tennessee. And it's funny you mention the brakes. They caused two accidents in my car, but not because they failed, because the rear were too strong for the weight in the back (70/30ish split front to rear). First one I was avoiding a deer and the back locked up and spun me into a ditch at 55mph (didn't hurt the car at all). Second time was right after my buddy took the car over a tire blew out on the highway and the rear locked up again and spun him into the median at 65ish mph. The rear calipers are a split design, I wanna say 2 pot, it's been a while. And there's just no weight back there so they lock so easy.
My 04 XC90 is a beast. Stock except for a stage 1 tune, k&n filter and 3" Elevate cat back exhaust. About a 6 second 0-100 km/h and an absolute hoot to drive in manual mode. Polestar replica 18's And all wheel drive make it rail corners and can wheel off-road too! Best car ever
A non turbo version with a proper exhaust sound exactly like a viper and if you change the set up, it sounds exactly like a lambo. It sorta just jumps back a forth. When I finish my safari/rally build I’d love for you to get to drive it.
The throttle is heavy is because it's not throttle-by-wire like most cares after 1999. There's a literal cable that runs to a circular spring that pulls open the throttle body. I own a '97 850R sedan.

Isaiah Carlos Glenn you should’ve tried the deer skin leather seats in the late 90s 960/v90s. Damn comfortable
That’s iffy. I’m on my 5th 850. The base model cloth seats are more comfortable than any of the leather ones.
I could feel the drone in my head through my headphones
A blue 850 is the coolest wagon on the planet
A blue RS2 too.
I definitely heard baby Viper too, dude!
Thought I was going mad 😅
Saw a lowmiled T-gul (t-yellow) yesterday, you don't see them anymore, it put a smile on my face. Fun fact, when the 850 debuted, it was the world's safest car thanks to strong A-pillars and side impact protection 🤘🇸🇪
Does it sound like a vr6 viper combo. Idk.
ever heard a vr5? check it out
VanClyde nooooo wtf
Kenny J I’m definitely not a kid lol I have kids though
@@a.b.coating We're all kids at heart, but yes, the vr5's sound is pretty unique. (shares same bellhousing as a vr6, wink wink)
VanClyde is it a vw thing
One of the raddest cars reviewed in a minute!!!! SOO CLEAN maybe the cleanest 850R ive seen outside a show
That’s nuts! It sound exactly like a viper. It makes me wanna sell my Legacy GT Wagon and join the Volvo life😂

Rex Volvo just saw your newest video, great sound! Gotta get a better exhaust setup than stock on mine still.
I never thought I'd want a Volvo but I sure as hell do now lol even stock this wagon is fuckin beautiful 🤣
Aaron Rasey do it! Jon us!
That engine note is something else. Currently contemplating whether to buy a focus st mk2 purely for the 5pot engine
Everyone in Florida in the comments like “ that’s my boy jingles fridge “ 😅
Thechristopherryan I literally got sent this exact message on FB 😂

Loving the "Back to the roots" videos. I always loved these cars back in the day!
The focus RS in europe was just the volvo RNC 5 cylinder with "DURATEC" slapped on the cover lol
Sup :D should've known you would pop up in the comments lmao
@@Leonidae I see all volvo
Volvos are so underrated man and they are actually nice cars. And the sound of that engine is so unique and awesome.
MORE VOLVOS PLEASE!!!
Heck yeah!! I love Volvo’s!! My uncle used to work at the Volvo factory in Charleston, South Carolina!! But anyways great video David!! Sweet Volvo!!
This was my first car and I blew it up! Haha 220k miles (not type r but had the 220hp 2.3t sedan)
Blew up the timing belt or trans?
@@ethixhiggins5059 Thermostat failure and pycho neglect turned into head gasket, I drove it with said head gasket blown for over 2 month. It would over heat if I couldn't get it to over 50mph. Everything on it was broken besides.....the door handles..those godlike door handles.
Loved that car tho :D
@@ethixhiggins5059 I only had it for about 25k total tho
first car was a 87' 740 turbo, second was a 93 960. now im in the 98 xc 90. loved this one.
well technically the viper has two sets of 5 cylinder banks each putting out their own sound. sounding very similar
Always wanted one of these 😪
I have an S70Rm and she makes PLENTY OF KIDS MAD. 5 Cylinder engines sound amazing.
I always had a thing for the 'Brick Volvo's'.
Lovely aren't they
ITS JINGLES CAR!!!! I don’t know how I’ve never seen this video before haha I love Michael❤️
I hear a bit just a bit of a 12v VR6 in it.
3:00 me too
I love getting behind Jingle when that cutout is open!
Klas Peppar Volvo should have known better to get in dealings with Ford and expect good outcomes
Ahh yes, dislike Americans for something they couldn't control. Niceee
@@r.five.3 almost every American I have hade the unfortune to encounter, have been loud, rude and extremely entitled.

Boost gauge on these are read like this.
Black section is vacuum, center is dead pressure, white area 1/3 5psi 1/2 10psi max 15psi I believe.

My first car was a 960. It was a perfect sleeper platform.
My turbos wastegate broke and stopped making boost, so I just bought a bigger turbo💀
volvo is my favorite car i have a 1995 volvo 850 glt sports wagon it is in rough condition, but it gets me from a to b
Going home in two weeks to get my 850 Turbo wagon back on the road. One of the most satisfying cars to drive.
I used to have a 850R sedan its my favorite car ive ever owned. I had a bigger turbo, exhaust downpipes etc... it was fun to drive and suprised alot of cars when Id pass them
I remember these killing it in BTCC races when they came out. Nothing like a fast estate. Great paint too
Oh, you mean these ones? 😅 th-cam.com/video/BKmA5ylD-rI/w-d-xo.html
Also, this isn’t the focus ra motor. The focus ra has the Volvo motor. Don’t mix it up. It was in 850s and s70s for over 5 years before the rs got it
I just got one, and I find under about 2k it sounds like a 4 cylinder boxer engine. It's absolutely sublime how it feels smooth and violent at the same time. It's like getting into a fist fight with a drunk Mike tyson wearing sockem boppers covered in velvet even in stock form. And every once in a while I get the knowing nod and smile from people.
I'm so stoked to see a Volvo on here
I mean it is one bank of the v10 so it makes sense that it would sound a bit like one.
My dad has one of these when I was growing up, so fun to rip around it and learn how to drive
oh my god finally. i have an 850r and i’ve never seen a review from a big youtuber
Owned lots of cars and Volvo is the ones I always seem to go back to , Love my wagon .
And it's got 250,000 km on it too lol
A non turbo version with a proper exhaust sound exactly like a viper and if you change the set up, it sounds exactly like a lambo. It sorta just jumps back a forth. When I finish my safari/rally build I’d love for you to get to drive it.
I had a volvo s40 a few years. That thing would pull up to 120mph and keep going. The diesel sound was lovely too.
They even raced the wagon in the UK in a series called the British Touring Cars. Its become an icon car & 1 of the most famous car in the series.
Oh, you mean these ones?? 😉 th-cam.com/video/BKmA5ylD-rI/w-d-xo.html
The throttle is heavy is because it's not throttle-by-wire like most cares after 1999. There's a literal cable that runs to a circular spring that pulls open the throttle body. I own a '97 850R sedan.
My V70 saved my life. I have owned Volvos ever since.
You need to drive the S60R bc it’s the awd sedan version of this so it’s most likely faster and more nimble
