And then wire brush all the debris into the engine...And BTW did they wash out the sump residue and clean the oil suction pipe filter?
When he fitted the cam belt he didn't check to make sure he had it lined up with the crank and the camshaft timing marks. This is most important if he didn't want to ruin the motor.

I like how a 924 is considered a classic by any stretch of the imagination. The engine is out of a late model vw Vanagon, so those parts are relatively cheap. They even went to the trouble of hiding the "VW" cast in the head along with doing their best to disguise incomplete vw part numbers. This was a budget sports car offered as an alternative to a 944 or a 911. It's a fancy Jetta.
The 924 was around before the 944, which without it would have never made it into production. Also the 924 is the best selling Porsche to date which of course can come down to its affordable price but also its fantastic reliability which is why so many of them are still around today and probably for many years to come.
No mentioning of cleaning out the sump? Or that he is using a copper brush and not a steel one?and why? And most importantly what to do when changing a timing belt: looking for the timing marks before removing the belt and while installing it, so you don’t mess up the inner workings of your engine. Nope... that’s why people love Edd, even if he complains a lot about working on a budget, because let’s face it, we all dislike working on a budget while working for a man interested in nothing but profit.
All fair points but the engine in a 924 is non-interference so you don't have to worry about messing up the timing belt, just thought I'd mention that in case anyone reading this is doing it themselves :)

This new format cuts corners on the actual car mechanics and how things are done. You can't learn as much from this format and I think it makes the show worse than it was. It doesn't have so much to do with the new guy or Edd, as it has with the new faster, Americanised format of style and drama over content and that it rapid-cuts from the beginning of the job to "aaaand, we're done" without actually showing anything about how it all was done. And that is exactly the concern that Edd had, and at least one of the reasons for him leaving the show.
There is only so many times you can learn the same thing unless you only have volatile memory. As long as the car doesnt have any revolutionary engineering like the doors on the BMW z1 or such there will not be much to learn as there is no point in showing dealer level equipment like computer diagnostics and such since no viewer will have legal access to that. Ant is fine, he only has an anooying cadense to his voice some times but he cant really help that. (You are born where you are born and speak accordingly). Most of these cars they do in america are so old that the engineering is simpler than a pry bar that is the reason why the show seems stale since they have thankfully largely removed the heavily scripted and acted bits that Edd didnt like.

I love the socket head cap screws on the oil pan. Touches like that make Porsches (yeah I know, Audi) a joy to work on. I also like Edd, Mike, AND Ant. They’re all talented and entertaining.
Oh, how I miss Edd more and more. This Ant is not a real mechanic like Edd or Fuzz but some kind of actor. They never show you how Ant is doing a job but only short takes when he is turning a bolt or lifting a cylinder head. I believe that they don’t show more detailed handling because every real motorman/woman would immediately see that he is not used to do the job. And what disturbs me most, is that he doesn’t fix old parts but assembles new ones which is easy. Overhauling old parts is just the most important to show. People can spare a lot of money by fixing old engine parts. Edd told us every details how we can spot faults and how to adjust everything. Ant is just doing things somebody has showed him. I may be wrong but as an old petrolhead (50 yrs of car tinkering) I can see that Ant is not used to do car servicing. Ant has good presentation skill but only when scripted I think.

forgot the little piece of gasket paper that goes on the wide side of the oil pan near the flywheel. it keeps the pan equally parallel to the block mating surface. not a big deal though just nitpicking.

switch to 5 speed from a turbo ..need to cut 3/4..1 inch off shift rod... check oil galley and line on head rear pistion is one that fails.. if you can find them euro spec pistions and 5 bolt front spindles and rears can be a bolt on job ftom a later 924 or 931..oh newer belts are dirreactional now some vendors
