I hope to get back out there this Fall. I think I am going to hike back up to Lake Vernon. In the videos from that trip I have up on my playlists we weren't able to cross the raging outlet stream which prevented me from fishing that stream and hiking cross country to Gregor Lake above it. We hit good fishing this trip but it could be a lot better. I also have a clip where I fish below the dam in the river if you haven't seen it and are interested. It's on my river fishing playlist. I need to fish the river and the reservoir the next time I go.
I have been to Hetch Hetchy only one day and had a couple hours without any thing...not a bite. It was maybe the first week of May and I tried several lures at different depths but nothing. Great video! It makes me want to give it a try there again!
My experience might have been a fluke. I tried the other side by the ranger's boat launch and I only hit one fish. It was June and the water was really cold because it was following a heavy snow year. The waterfalls that poured into the Lake were firing. You couldn't even walk along the path below the Wapama falls because of the rushing water. I actually have a clip on my hiking playlist that shows the falls that year. The part 2 clip shows the falls. I hope you get a chance to hit that lake again. A dude working for the water department I spoke with last time I was there said that some huge browns have come out of there. Given the lack of fishing pressure, I don't doubt it.
@@wildernesswithamani1027 Back about 40 years ago my best friends brother in law had made several trips there and said he always caught big browns. He had lots of photos. This guy was an A/C tech working on rooftops all the time. He was pretty much fearless and part mountain goat so he would latch onto and climb down places you wouldn't think possible. I can't remember for sure but they don't allow a small boat like yours out there do they?
@@Marta_Lledo_Video_Channel I am pretty sure I can't use my boat in there, even without a motor. Boat would be ideal! There has to be big browns in there.
@@wildernesswithamani1027 when I went I was the only one on the whole lake fishing. The friend I was speaking of used to claim browns in the 25 inch and up range. I would love to get out on that lake early to troll with some repalas or u20 flatfish. I know there are plenty 10 to 15 lb. fish waiting to be caught there.
Right on. That's what it's all about. A small tip can make the difference between nothing and getting something good size when the fishing is tough. We all are still learning!
I only give the most general info on the locations I fish. I typically fish the first places I see or can pull off the road. Reservoirs, I typically go to the dam or the first public access area and if there are campgrounds, I'm sure there are thousands of pics going up on Instagram and facebook every summer. Guide service web pages usually have quite a few pics hyping the waters they fish as well. Type in the name of anywhere I fish and there is way more detailed info that will pop up than I have in my videos. I seriously doubt Hetch Hetchy Reservoir has scores of people fishing at it after my video is viewed. Especially since the spot I went down to the lake at was very sketchy with loose boulders and crumbling rock. I believe claims that a single video can ruin a spot ignore the scores of other info across a variety of social media platforms and are based on anecdotal deductive reasoning at best.
This lake gets next to no fishing pressure and I was talking to a guy that has worked at the dam for a couple of decades and he has seen some monster trout come out of there but he rarely sees people fish. I need to spend a half a day scouting and fishing the lake again.
Have fished the back of HetchHetchy many times years ago big black rooster tails castmasters and yes 2.5 countdown rainbow rapalas. Around seven miles to the back. Brown’s and rainbows two to four pounds but as fishing goes not always
Yeah, I couldn't keep them off my hook this trip but I tried a couple years later and I didn't get a single hit fishing a variety of depths with the same countdown rapala. Sometimes they hit I guess, and sometimes they don't.
Do you think trekking poles would help or are those rocks sketchy regardless? Have you ever fished Rancheria Creek further up that trail? I can't find any info about fishing that creek. Thanks for another great video!
Those rocks were hopelessly unstable and I was almost falling every couple of steps. I don't think poles would have helped but who knows. I think I'm headed back here this Fall. I'm not sure about the creek you mentioned by name but the outlet creek from Lake Vernon is great. I couldn't fish it on this trip because the River was too high and we decided it was safer to skip it. Maybe October will be prime to access the footbridge over that outlet creek where we would be able too get better fishing access. I highly recommend it.
Hello Amani, I plan on fishing Hetch Hetchy but it states that public access below high water mark is prohibited. Does that mean that we can’t fish on shore as you’re doing here?
To be honest, I never read that. I was planning to fish it this fall. When it comes to rules, go with the best information available which doesn't include me! I have a clip for fishing the river below it on my river fishing playlist and a clip for Lake Vernon in the back country above if you are looking for stuff to do while you are there. I also have a lot of content for fishing off the 120 just outside of the eastern side of the park. A lot of good fishing all around. My playlists have a lot. Lake Vernon above Hetch Hetchy has real nice rainbow fishing but the hike is hell and there are always seems to be a lot of bears!
@@wildernesswithamani1027 Thanks for replying back quickly, I’m reading it again and I think they’re saying the high water spillway area and below is prohibited. I could be wrong but I think that’s what they mean, I mean plenty of people have commented that they fished the lake so I’m sure they have to hike down to the lake and fish the shore just how you’re doing. Keep up with the good fishing as usual 👍🏻.
That reservoir probably gets little pressure because it's a leg snapping obstacle course just to get down to the water! I'm going to spend a day or two exploring that shoreline at some point. Not smart enough to avoid it! Going to go try to get some browns and rainbows up at Courtright reservoir above Fresno next week. Hopefully get some good footage. Thanks for checking out my channel.
@TACOMA MODS Ideas, Ideas! Everyone needs new strategies to pull out when the fishing gets tough. My tactics are often far from textbook fishing methods but if they can help someone catch fish and make adjustments when their usual approach isn't working , that's all I care about!
Aint' that the truth! I usually just keep it simple and fish nymphs like I usually do in the backcountry. In my clip for fishing Lake Vernon I was using nymphs and crushing fat rainbows on the windy side of the lake. That clip is on my backcountry fishing playlist and the horrible hike up there is on my hiking playlist.
Right on. This was one of the early videos on what is now my "lakes and reservoirs" playlist. I think I need to revisit it for another run. I have a clip of fishing below the dam in the river on my "rivers" playlist if you haven't seen it and are interested.
I went to get her hitchu when I was 13 with my pops but we didn’t catch anything I’d love to go back with the knowledge I have today. What’s the weight of the countdown rapala that you are using? Thanks
Right on, I butcher my typing all the time. I can't remember exactly how big of a countdown I was using. I think I was using one that was about 4" long, rainbow trout imitation. I was able to cast it a mile. I was fishing the shore where the wind was blowing onto. The rocks were very sketchy where I was fishing. Super unstable. If you go farther down the trail perhaps you can find some better shore to cast from. I tried briefly on the other side where the rangers launch their boats, out of the wind, and didn't even get a single hit. I don't have the time now to head out there myself but I hope to try that lake again before the snow falls and they close the road. I have the feeling if you hit that place when the sun is off the water and throw a good size lure you have a shot at nailing something really big. Good luck!
I would also recommend trying to cast out some streamers or wooly buggers if you fly fish. Good place to try and nail a big brown on a fly rod. I wish I had brought mine down there!
It's a Countdown Rapala about 4" long. They sell them all over at places that have fishing tackle. Walmart has the best prices. When I am fishing those, sometimes I start reeling right away and other times I'll let it sink to varying depths before I start reeling. During warmer months, larger fish tend to be deeper at or below the thermocline. I count as it sinks and when you hit a fish, try that same depth to see if there are more fish there. Your catch could be a fluke or there could be a lot more trout at the same depth you got that one. I carry both Countdown Rapalas and Floating Rapalas. Floating Rapalas are my choice during the cold months and when I am fishing a river where they are permitted.. I am using floating Rapalas in my Big Pine Lakes clip. Good luck!
If you notice when I am making my way down to the water in the start of the clip, I nearly fall a couple of times. The shore consisted of large to medium size boulders that were shifty and not stable at all. For at least half of the fish I caught, I could barely reach the water without falling head first into the lake. If I tried to cradle the fish and lost hold, which was likely, the fish were going into the dry jumble of boulders I was teetering on as I hovered several feet above the water. I stabilized the fish the best I could for the camera without falling and injuring myself or going into the drink. I believe I refer to possible breaking my leg a couple of times. In the fish you see me catch in my fly fishing clip, I do what I can to prevent taking fish out of the water at all and you will see that is how I will handle the dozens of fish I will most likely catch and release fishing for Golden Trout in a week or so. I did what I could not to harm the fish and from what I could see, no fish's jaws were hyper-extended and all of the fish I released swam away strong. That rocky shoreline was a fairly dangerous place to stand on and that is probably why no one tries to go down there. Iplan to go back in the fall to find better places to fish and focus on only fishing the reservoir (went backpacking the next morning) at which time I will try to be more mindful while I am filming. In the end, I can't risk falling and getting hurt down there so I will always do what I can to not injure myself and release the fish safely. I am sorry my clip bothered you.

I highly recommend giving it a shot.
Right on. That is still the only time I tried that place out even though I've hiked that trailhead, probably, 10 times over the decades. Next time I go I plan to hike much farther down the trail. I want to investigate the area off to the side of where the falls flow in. Basically, I'll settle on a spot where I'm not on the constant verge of falling in the water or taking a nasty spill! I tried the area around the boat launch for the rangers but I hooked one fish that got off and nothing else. The fish seemed to be hanging out along the shore where the afternoon wind was blowing all the food towards. Just writing this makes me want to go!
