Thanks! If they do it's a recent thing. I had a couple backcountry permits maybe 2 years ago. (Alger Lakes and Vogalsang trips.) They make you go through a briefing as part of that and bear spray hasn't come up. If that's something they're outlawing now I'd be both surprised and not surprised. Surprised because it makes no sense, you only deploy it when needed. Not surprised because stranger things happen. 🙄 That said, I would totally understand them banning bear spray in the valley. Running into bears there is an every outing occurrence and the areas are so heavily populated with bears and people that accidentally spraying people is a sure thing.
Just checked. They consider it "a weapon" and it's banned. Which is silly. In Yosemite you would likely never need it anyway but all it takes it one causality that could have been prevented with bear spray, to end all that. I only carry in grizzly country. National Forest rules vs National Park rules are sometimes silly. Critters and fires know no boundaries. I do appreciate the more lenient fire restrictions in Yosemite...
There is no more satisfying type of fishing, at least in my mind. You never know where Trout are going to hang out; especially Browns. That Payne seems an awfully delicate rod for that type of fishing, but I completely understand wanting to use it. It all brings back memories and the different smells of the past. Many thanks.
Thanks for watching. I'm glad it brings back memories. That is part of the reason I make these chronicles. The Payne isn't too bad for this. It's a 3pc that I made similar to the 2pc. The extra ferrule stiffens it up a bit.
I'm typically not a huge commenter but do enjoy your videos in my downtime. I always watch to the end or I wouldn't have started to begin with. It's always relaxing watching your adventures and the scenery. Thanks for the Video Jim.
Your videos help me get through between fishing trips. I stay till the end or come back to finish. I appreciate when people do recaps like you do, as I always take account what worked and what didn’t, and what I could have done better. Thank you
Thanks! That's exactly what my Chronicles and now my video Chronicles are meant to do! And yeah, opening day is always a little rough for me. I watch the video and I'm like "should have covered with a dry first", should have crouched more", "should have shot that first cast from farther back". LOL.
Great video! Part of the fun for me is trying to figure out where you actually are by reading the descriptions of the areas in the chronicles and also from the videos. There was a video you made a few years back of a lake in the tuoloumne area and I was able to figure out the actual lake. I read your chronicle of these creeks from 2007, and I think the first creek you hit back then was the second creek in this video, but in 2007 you came to the creek via the other end of the fire road. In 2007, it sounded like you actually descended down the canyon to the creek. In this video, I believe the fire road was actually going uphill. In any case, I’m pretty new to fly fishing and fishing in general (mostly do tenkara fishing in the eastern Sierra creeks) so these videos are awesome to watch. Can’t wait till summer!
Hi and thanks! Yeah, with a little work you can figure some of these out. But frankly, most folks don't actually watch enough of the video to do that. That first creek in the 2007 Chronicle was Butterball, so not in this video at all, it's this one: th-cam.com/video/gR5s2lLJh40/w-d-xo.htmlsi=rAgR_nXfzda9_ts4 I once had a young fellow figure out where I was simply from the types of rocks and trees in the video. It was pretty amazing. Glad you enjoyed the video!
I really enjoy your videos, Pleasanton resident here and fellow small stream guy. Appreciate you not naming the small streams in Yosemite. I think you make good calls on what to name or not name. My son and I had a great adventure going to fish Odell lake one weekend and but for your video I don’t think we would have made it. Jeez, I’m always worried about your breaking that bamboo rod, and when you choked up on it…😮
Thanks! I appreciate knowing that. What was it about Odell that made you think you might now make it? As for the rods, yeah. It happens. I've broken them before. Fortunately, I can make another if needed. In fact, I've been meaning to make a new rod. The old one is quite fatigued. That's why you saw me fishing various rods last year.
Very cool video, Jim! When you said you were going to fish in that grassy area I couldn't believe it! You definitely earned those fish making your way through all the brush. Great to see a new video from you! I really like my DJI Osmo Action 4 camera, btw. Haven't had any of the weird bugs and crashes that come with the GoPros I've owned. $299 on Amazon.
Thanks Mike! Your note comes 2 days too late. 😅 I pulled the trigger on a GoPro 12 Content Creator package on Tuesday. 😂 After this outing I got sick of the Hero 8 issues. I'll use it as back up I guess.
Yeah definitely dry water. I was simply too lazy. Probably would have done better with a dry given how spooky the fish were. Back in the day, I would have followed this trip up with another the following week. Can't do that on a whim any longer. The reservation systems stifles spontaneity.
@Jim - I appreciate your attitude, demeanor, a patience in your videos. I like to fish the Eastern Sierra. But sharing information on social media concerns me to, because people who visit the place described may not have the same respect for nature as you and I might have. What you might do in your videos is re-iterate the importance of protecting the environment. Pack out what you pack in. We have to act responsibly today to preserve great fishing tomorrow. Or some message of that nature. I am looking for places, out of the way places to flyfish myself.
Thanks. I'll consider that more. I have done in the past but frankly it depends on my mood on the day. I try not to be too repetitive in my videos but with all the newer folks in the backcountry it is possible that first time viewers are ignorant of suck things. Thanks.
Hello from Minnesota! Grew up here fishing similar type streams, fighting brush for brookies and browns, 63 and hit the streams again last week. Really enjoyed your video, new sub. for sure!
I agree. Not so worried about NOT sharing, it's the re-edits the bugged me. I usually try to make my videos a little more fluid and audio edits always suck. 😅 Thanks
Re: bear spray - Yosemite bans it don't they? Been keeping my eyes peeled for your first video of the season! Love it.

Hi! Thanks! I'm the same way. I appreciate it. More soon.
Amazing, I would have never considered fishing such small water.
I took the small stream thing pretty seriously when I younger. Nothing was tooo small. 😅

Thanks for the kind words! I heading out again this weekend for, hopefully, large Lahontans.

Tough water for a fly rod....salute for the effort, and that nice brown you caught up in the meadow is about the prettiest brown I've seen!
Thanks! Yeah, I probably don't give that little stream the time or credit it deserves. I'm sure with more patience it would produce some gems.
Love the bamboo rod!
Thanks! It's my take on a Payne 100 in 3PC. (Not a Payne 197).
Jim, firstime commenter... long time viewer. Just wanted to say keep the videos comming... I'm one of the viewers that always watches until the end.
Cool. Thank you! Glad you enjoy the videos! Thanks for taking the time to let me know. 🙂

Ey nice video. Great to you see you out there. I still have golden trout on my mind lol
Thanks! Hopefully the Golden Trout will come soon!
I think not naming the streams is best for small stuff like you were fishing and I agree w your editing choices.
Thanks! And thanks for watching!

@@highcountrychronicles Apparently the Hero 8 was one of the buggiest and problematic releases. I'm sure the 12 will be much better.

Neat video. Like that first fish. Looks like dry fly opportunities.

Nothing wrong with that first brown...beautiful colors. Tough streams to fish with all the obstacles and that's ok. Have to try.
Yeah. Makes for a fun way to shake the rust off. 😅
love your videos, can't wait for your next backpacking adventure.
Thank you! Glad to here it! Backpacking season is coming!
