Thanks. This was a case where I had to just get down there and make some things happen. I could have spent 2 days fishing that river and still not had enough. Maybe I should spend a day finding my way around the area first!
Amani you are an overachiever! Absolutely kicking ass! Isn’t that an amazing spot. That brown had his Halloween costume on for you! It’s hot down in there with the canyon walls, I used to chuck Caddis down there, fall is coming Amani! Think cool fall rain and hungry browns!
I think there are some monsters down there and I mean to go back and fish every stretch I can access looking for them! That brown was practically glowing!
when your driving up the hill to the dam from the old lodge down at the bottom there is a trail that goes down to the river its a serious trail but worth the hike when you get to the river you can wade across then you can get to about 2 or 3 unbelievable holes from the other side of the river. these fish are really spooky so lay low and do your thing the most beautiful trout in the world down there bring your fly rod the browns love the wooly buggers and your jig will be great too. fall is the best time I have not been there in 20 years but Im going this year because you got my blood boiling lol ....
I had no issue with it when I got that rainbow in the net just under the wire! With climbing out, hustling up to my car, and heading to the gate, I made it with 5 min to spare!
Right on. Glad you dig the content. If I can figure out how to navigate the forest closures going on I should have something new next week. Until then, Hopefully the stuff I already have on my playlists will do. Thanks for tuning in.
That river was awesome. It looked like it only got better downstream. I need to spend a half day just scouting around for access trails and good places to climb down. Could take years to unfold this mystery!
Man, "at the buzzer" describes it! I thought I was done. I wanted so badly to work my way downstream but I didn't have the time. Remarkable looking water that was just hard to reach. Give me more time and I will get there!
Love your videos ! If you ever want to meet up there let me know I have the annual pass and spend a lot of time up there throughout the year! That places never lets me down !
@@wildernesswithamani1027 That it is !! Still wondering how you got down there lol ! Was just there today had no solid bites. They where definitely out I could see them when I was casting out from the banks but it was just not enough for them to take the bait. Didn’t help how hot it was either !
The river going down as far as I could see looked awesome. It was one terrific stretch after another. I need to get back down there when it's cooler and I have an entire day to check that place out.
I've fished that area many times in the past. There are huge browns in both the lake and the river but they are very picky. Years ago you could drive in at any time of morning and leave late, changes in policy of when you have to arrive and leave have made the lake much less accessible than it once was.
I hate that they close the gate and restrict the hours! I might just get a wilderness permit and stay a couple days in the backpacker's campground just to fish the area.
It's fairly easy to fish the river for a short stretch once you get past the vertical walls below the dam. After that short stretch and you come to the foot bridge, the river gets really nice for fishing but seriously difficult to get around. You have to go up, around, and drop in. Watch your step and look out for rattle snakes. Good luck.
There were several pools just like it as far downstream as I could see. I just need to figure out how to get there. I like spoons and spinners but 1/8 OZ jigs have become my weapon of choice for large trout in rivers. I love taking apart smaller streams with a panther Martin though.
That fish looked amazing. We have to get back down there at some point. Maybe meet up in November. I didn't have time to look around and see if there were better access points downstream. The river is prime for fly fishing when the flow is down like it is now. I didn't bring mine down because I had no time. I was looking to hit and run and find a big fish quick. No big fish this time but a nice fish. I barely found my way out of that last stretch of stream in time!
Man, I wish I had more time! I wasn't sure if there were better routes to reach the killer looking stretches downstream from there because all I had time for was to climb to that one last section and I was bumbling and stumbling through bushes and boulders trying to figure out how to get there! You should have seen me scrambling around trying to figure out how to climb out so I could start running back to my car. A ranger was parked there waiting by my solo car in the lot! He probably locks the gate.
Right on. I'm not sure I'll make it but I am thinking hard about heading back for round 2 on this stretch. If go it will be later in the Fall. A little less flow would be a good thing. It's tough to get around down there but some of the water looks amazing.
@@wildernesswithamani1027I’m headed to Wawona and Yosemite in 10 days. Gonna try my luck at Cathedral Lakes, Sunrise and maybe Tenaya. We’re staying by the south fork of the Merced so I’m going to try and hit that up as well. Thanks again for your content. You helped me have success in a few places in the Sierra! 👍🙏
5 min to spare! The big challenge was finding the spot I climbed down at because there weren't a lot of safe options. The river looks great down below. I want to get out there at some point and scout around while fishing.
I have not fished those lakes. I do have a clip on my 'backcountry lakes and creeks' playlist that features fishing in Lake Vernon above the Hetch Hetchy area. When it comes to alpine lake fishing in general I keep it simple but I'm fairly effective. If you go to my 'trout fishing tips' playlist I have a couple of clips that might help. One is on jig fishing in alpine lakes and the other one is a very basic fly fishing clip. If you haven't tried fly fishing, grab a cheap backpacking fly rod for $40-$50 that comes with a reel and floating line and you're in. Probably be able to find one for less used. I also have a couple of clips where I demonstrate using spinners in small creeks, rivers, and alpine lakes. I hope that helps. Good luck.
I have a clip on my lakes and reservoir playlist where I fish it right after the snow melted. Smoking hot brown trout action in the middle of the day. Hit on a countdown Rapala on nearly every cast. Could have been a fluke but I doubt it. Want to fly fish it with a big streamer in the future. It is just near impossible to move around on a lot of the shore without falling in the water. It is a little more stable on the other side near the dam but the lake was warm like bath water so I decided I'll just come back when it's colder. I was talking to a water department guy out there and he says monsters come out of there when it's cold. Based on the hour and a half I fished it before I hiked up and shot my Lake Vernon clip about a year and a half ago, I don't doubt it.
Yeah, I was looking at it. I simply didn't have the time to explore routes down there. I barely made it back in time as it was and I stole an extra 5 min from my 4pm deadline to leave!
Always looking forward to your Yosemite videos. Such a shame that hetch hetchy didn’t provide any fish. Its on my bucket list to fish there. When would you see is the best time of year to fish the reservoir?
Just like with most reservoirs, when the lake turns over. I have a clip about that on my fishing tips playlist. I usually wait until there are sustained low temperatures below freezing for several weeks or fish the months right around and soon after the snow melts.
Right on. I want to hit the Stanislaus. I want to try to get out around Beardsley and see what the river is doing above and below it. It would have to happen soon so I'm not sure. Glad to have you aboard. I have hundreds of videos organized on playlists already and there will be a lot more coming. Thanks for tuning in.
Several years back we were fishing the North Fork Stanislaus at 4000 ft. and saw an otter swimming upstream, rock hopping as he went. If you’ve seen one there’s more which is bad news. They’re feasting on trout! Not sure if the CDFG is aware.
They are Rocky Boot company hunting boots. They are fully waterproof. These are fairly insulated which makes them a bit warm in the summer but I'm used to wearing insulated boots year round. I can afford one good pair of boots at a time and they need to be able to keep my feet dry and keep my ankles from getting torn up when I'm crawling around and through madness trying to reach fishing spots year round. The soles have great grip when I'm climbing around on granite.
I'm fishing a light 5' Ugly stik. That's what I am using in all of the clips on my 'river fishing' and 'Truckee river streak' playlists. When you sink that hook into a fish over 18" in heavy current on that light tackle, look out!
There is some amazing looking water down the river from the foot bridge. It would take some effort getting down there but I think it would be worth it just to find out what's in there! It looks like huge fish habitat!
I don't think you can but to be honest I'm not sure. There is a backpackers campground above where the trail down there starts. I was thinking about going there in the Fall. Climbing around down there on the river is tough once you get past the foot bridge but there are amazing deep pools beyond that point so for me it's worth fighting my way down there. I hope to go farther next time.
No. I was going to go 3 weeks ago and when I went to look up fishing regulations I saw that reservations are required because of Covid. This was the first day off that I had where a pass was available. You get them on the same site you get wilderness permits. They are running quotas even though the place seemed packed to me. I got a 3 day pass for $35 that was strictly a day pass so I was supposed to leave the park by 11pm each day. I was only there mon-tue and I got booted out of Hetch Hetchy by 5pm so that was never a factor for me.
Right on. I haven't spent a lot of time fishing in the park other than up in the backcountry. I've spent quite a bit of time fishing the area off of the 120 on the outside of the park.
