    The weight conversation is an interesting one for me because the flip side to this conversation is that people typically assume that when you're fat it's because you eat everything in sight and you just want to stay that way. They don't think maybe it's slow metabolism, a thyroid issue, or anything of that nature. Back before my accident that made it pretty much impossible for me to work out anymore, at least not without the searing pain going up my back or in my legs, I had gotten into the habit of going to the gym 5 days a week and I LOVED it and still couldn't get the weight to come down or at least not at the rate of which I was working out and most days I barely eat 2 meals let alone the 3 you're supposed to eat so eating everything in sight is not the reason I'm overweight. Now the only thing my doctor could figure, since they tested for a thyroid issue and it came back that I didn't have one, was that my metabolism is just extremely slow. The flip side is also the people who think that because you're a person that is overweight, Obese, or as I like to call it, pleasantly plump, that you're are automatically diabetic or the other conditions that typically come with being fat and I don't have those conditions and people are always shocked. Hell I'm always shocked lol. My doctor said she's seen plenty of people my size or even heavier, that are healthier than people who are thin and told me to stop looking for issues that aren't there. The assumptions people make, that we ourselves make, surrounding weight is just...interesting. Great video friend! Love you! ❤❤

    Vicky and I call it "back up" weight...because Crohn's sufferers spend so much time unable to eat at all. I've struggled with weight since college. A year ago I gave up sugar (finally, having tried everything else) and lost 35 pounds since doing that. But I tell Vicky to eat whenever she can eat. Bless her and bless you, too. Love you.

    I could write so much about this, but I'm not sure I want it on utube. It's been a lifelong struggle, and the things people feel entitled to tell you are astounding.
    Like JC I used to spend 6 days a week in the gym, take long walks etc...and then the accident happened. Everything changed in a moment.

      This is a relatively new experience for me. Being this size and dealing with the looks, and comments. I’ve been shocked by how hurtful people will be. I’ve been surprised by how well meaning people can still say some really mean things. As a society we can do so much better.

    Thank you, trying to make cards and laughing in your general direction, I'm glad I do voice overs.
    I too had a teacher, and my mom, told me that if I can't say anything nice then don't say it at all...I've been SUPER quiet my whole life ^_^
    To be less...insulated...is a goal for Q2, with the amazing girly problems that PCOS brings my hope is to lose jiggle but I want to be stronger too. I know if I look at a number instead of HOW I feel I'm just going to be depressed and I don't want to micromanage myself for what I eat....I'd like some meth too, please!!!
    Your shots will be interesting because if you mindlessly eat it could make that worse. If you don't eat enough protein then you'll be out of breath a LOT quicker than what you were. So many things to think about.

      Right, like our parents, our teachers, religious leaders, all the people told us to think before we speak, treat others as you want to be treated and choose kindness. C’mon people!
      I’m glad to hear one of your goals is putting yourself out there more. That’s great. And measurable.
      As far as PCOS, I’m so sorry that is part of your journey. I can only imagine the struggles based on other friends who suffer from it ad well. 🤗🫶🏻

    This was a great video covering an important topic. You're as heavy now as I was at the apex of the pandemic. I've been working hard for over a year to shift my weight, currently doing really well -there's some good weeks and bad weeks but I have really supportive friends, colleagues and contacts and hearing those "you've lost weight, Richard!" comments is really validating. But also I feel better in myself and I feel less dislike for my own body (I strongly believe I do have a bit of body dysmorphia but I'm getting there). Like you, I'm not getting any younger (in my mid 30s now) and I know the health benefits generally of carrying less weight are worth the sacrifices and effort made. (Saying that I am not really, at this time, interested in any of the pharmaceutical solutions; I have been enjoying Weight Watchers though and I have a good group - my question would be, could a system like that work for you?)
    I kinda worry that the "body positivity" crowd are going to find this video and have fun in the comments; I have a dim view of these people, IMO they just don't want to take responsibility and want people to spare their feelings over the truth. Obesity kills, it's a really big problem in the Western world; of course, people should be kind and courteous, but also at some point one has to call a spade a spade.

    • @BarrettLaurie
      @BarrettLaurie  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      So proud of you Richard. You have been a quiet source of inspiration all along as I watched you stick it out and reap the rewards.
      The feel better part I care more about than people noticing, but I’m ready to have fewer aches and pains.

    • @BarrettLaurie
      @BarrettLaurie  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      The body positivity thing I think is somewhat subjective, or at least it is in my view.
      I never see it as my place to push my idea of someone else’s best version of themself onto them. Or maybe project is a better word?
      Thats at least the prism I look at that through. We all know and understand the facts that healthier weights lead to healthier outcomes, so I wouldn’t subscribe to a “body positivity” model that includes gaslighted about scientific data. If that is what is required of some in the body positivity movement I don’t agree with that at all.
      Rather I viewed “body positivity” as not hurting others with harsh words or even well meaning ones. Or if people are on their way to their best self, we can still love and celebrate every inch and curve alone their journey to that best self.
      That’s my take on that.
      Appreciate you chatting with me. Love the discussion we have over these things.
      And seriously, so proud of your progress on weight loss this last year. You’ve been a huge inspiration. 🫶🏻

    I always amazed the doctors at my appointments. I Wasn’t on meds for anything, all my numbers were superb!
    I was warned a decade ago; that if I didn’t get my BMI to normal, I’d run into issues.
    Even though my BMI was up, I didn’t look overweight. I am 5’ 8” and didn’t look fat.’ Btw. I didn’t know you were 6’ 2”😮
    Well🤷🏽‍♀️ now, I’m dealing with Type 2 Diabetes.

      It is really frustrating. I’ve spent most of my life trying to keep weight on and now I’m looked at like “are you sure you have Crohn’s?” I wish they would just say, “but you’re fat!” Then at least I could discuss how my Crohn’s presents (anal fistulas and strictures) and that two things can be true at the same time. Crohn’s plus fat.

    Lol I know my mom suffers from Crohn’s and her weight fluctuates by quite a bit well most the time she’s probably around 120 pounds being at like 5 foot two she goes through these periods of binge eating and she can get all the way up to 250 to 60 when she really goes crazy lol but then usually symptoms of Crohn’s will kick in and then she’ll be bedridden for about a month and then she’ll literally weigh like 100 pounds soaking wet and look like bones and then she starts eating the right things again. She starts coming back to her like 110, 120 again, and it’s been kind of a cycle for the last couple of years, so she tends to keep a variety of sized clothing and tries to keep a strict diet but it almost always fails, unfortunately

    Hi, I just found your channel and I think you’re fantastic! I was just put on Phentermine last month. I am on the lowest dose of 15 mg. I lost 10 pounds in the first month. I have not experienced ANY side effects. I don’t have Crohn’s but I have Bile Acid Malabsorption (BAM). I take meds daily for this, and have not had any adverse effects from the Phentermine. I still get what you are going through. Before I was diagnosed and found a drug to help me every place I went. I had a look for the bathroom. Accidents at work, in the grocery store, at home. Thank goodness they were able to find a medication to help me, but I still have flareups. I wish you luck on the Phentermine, so far it’s working for me and I’m sure it will work for you too.
