People can choose whatever oil they wish to, personally I’ll stick with Pennzoil Ultra Platinum! Pennzoil Ultra Platinum is derived from Natural Gas, not crude utilizing “Pure Plus” technology so almost all the molecules are uniform. There’re many great “Full Synthetic” motor oil’s available, everyone has to choose what they feel comfortable with, whether that be Valvoline, Quaker State, Royal Purple, Castrol, Red-line, Amsoil, Mobil 1, the list goes on. I know what works for me, and I believe in the technology behind Pennzoil Ultra Platinum! Another great, informative video Rich, thanks for sharing!

They are hard on oils. Well, any engine needs excellent lubrication for that matter. Oil is the lifeblood of an engine!

POE esters aren't always the best application for synthetic. Esters are hard on seals and are mostly used for jet aircraft and serious professional race applications. Race engine oils often do not have a lot of anti rust, anti corrosive properties because they compete with the extreme pressure anti wear properties. Racing engines are torn down often and maintained more, pickled when they sit, especially the ones that use leaded & exotic fuels, so they don't worry so much about rust and corrosion. Also some additives don't like to stay mixed in esters.

I have a 2004 Mercury Marauder 4.6L 4V V8 with 157k miles. It started with 5W-20, then Ford changed the spec to 0W-20. Once I crossed 100k, I changed the spec to 5W-30. I always ran Mobil1 for motor oil and it gets changed with a Motorcraft filter every 5k miles.

I've heard you just stick with the oil recommeded for your vehicle in the owner's manual.

Yep 5W30 is fine. Ford calls for 5W20 as preferred, it's basically to help meet CAFE requirements.

I've got a couple of high mileage Tritons I switched them to AMSOIL 10W30 SS from 5W30 SS. I'm talking in excess of a quarter million miles, so I figured a touch higher viscosity won't hurt a thing in those worn engines. 10W30 SS still has a -52°F pour point and It is one of the least volatile oils. Been working good for me.

As well, I have heard Lake say as well that a Group 3 oil with additive package and some minor additions of Group 4 or 5 as part of that additive package, can perform better than a pure Group 4 or 5 in certain cases. So, a full PAO might seem better, but depending on the blended Group 3 with an excellent additive package, maybe not.

About 7 years ago, I called Amsoil and spoke to a technician and he told me off the record, that if an oil is called Full synthetic or 100% synthetic, it didn't matter because it is considered a marketing tool.

To echo what you said: 100% synthetic and full synthetic are the same thing. Amsoil may be a blend of group 3 and group 4 base stock just like “full” synthetics are. Pursuant to a 1990’s law suit between Castrol and Mobil 1, courts ruled that group 3 and 4 base oils are synthetic, therefore any oil that contains one or both of those groups, regardless of proportions, can be called synthetic. So as long as Amsoil contains group 3, even if it’s 100% group 3, they can legally call it 100% synthetic. Thus, 100% synthetic and full synthetic are synonymous. Amsoil admitted this in one of their own blogs.

Guys, I still believe AMSOIL Signature Series still has a very large percentage of PAO in it. Probably their XL as well. The OE and the High Milage possibly not as much. But of course no company says, it's proprietary information they all say. But in the end it's how it performs and it's worked extremely well for me for a very long time now, so I'm happy.
