I became an Ultra Platinum convert after that Project Farm competition. Nearly as good as Amsoil but not nearly as expensive, especially at major retailers' sale prices. One year edit: Wow, I didn't anticipate this starting such a broad discussion. Again, Shell has the global economies of scale to offer superior value.
Same here! Basically the same oil for darn near half the price. Combine that with the Purolator Boss filter and you get essentially equal performance for much less money.
That's all I've been using since I saw the Project Farm comparison. The price of the Ultra has gone up considerably since the Project Farm test. I'll bet Project Farm boosted their sales.
@@moshet842 100% agree. I switched to Microgard two years ago and am very impressed with their quality and value. Whip City Wrencher did some cut-aways, which showed excellent construction.
I had this nissan. I worked 50 km away. I worked nights, I am on the highway in a couple of minutes, work is just off the highway. Road is always quiet, always drive exact same speed with cruise control every day. I always had 6.7 L/100km for my milage. That was with the Top of the line Synthetic Mobile 1. One time I switched to Pennzoil Ultra Platinum Synthetic. Instantly I went down to 6.2 - 6.1 L/100km. remained at that range consistently after switching. It saved me enough fuel every week to get approximately 1 more trip to work (one way). That's amazing difference! I always use that oil now, even with my new car.
My understanding is when the calcium detergent is lower, it increase the effectiveness of molybdenum and zddp which improve wear protection and lower friction at the same time since less competition for metal surface from calcium deterrent. I have read from Eneos X Prime series engine oil bulletin which could be 2.5 times more effective for molybdenum to reduce friction coefficient at the same time lower zddp level compare to old additive package formula also reduce friction from other Lake Speed TH-cam clip.
Shell is a prestigious brand, Shell has been a Ferrari partner in Motorsport, needless to mention Paris Dakar, DTM, 24 hrs du mans.... And I don't believe that shell will sell BS to its customer. Amsoil has been along since the 70s just like the Malaysian PETRONAS while shell was founded in the late 1800s. Shell is the only brand that makes group 4 oils from GTL. No other brand does that

@Jeffsdata_0 I sure could. In my chevy that's got 259k miles, it's is much quieter on startup and seems to do slightly better on fuel economy. Also, I can go 5k between changes and the engine is just as quiet at 5 k as when I put the oil in. Cheaper oils almost made me alarmed a 5k the valve train was so noisy.
@@Jeffsdata_0 for me yes. I was under the impression that My Subaru dealer uses OEM oil from Subaru but they used this stuff call mobile special which you can get for like a dollar a quart and it's sold to big companies in big tanks. Oh man this is the more-science-based, nerding-out-on-oil content I was looking for. Glad I found this channel! The discussion the "the best oil" is a never ending discussion, but ALMOST NEVER is conversation technical in nature like this about the actual composition of these oil products and what makes them actually work & be different.
My wife’s 2004 Lexus RX330 (255K miles) used to burn a quart of oil between oil changes when using Mobil 1. When I switched over to Pennzoil Ultra Synthetic High Milage, she hasn’t burned a single drop and gets a couple more miles to the gallon than before. For me this is the best bang for your buck oil out there. Hands down.
Similar to me in my 2002 ES300. Went from Ultra platinum to high mileage synthetic and it doesn’t burn any oil between 5k oil changes. Used to burn 1 quart over same mileage interval
I used to have a 2000 Mustang GT that always seemed to burn oil in between oil changes no matter which brand I used. After I tried Ultra Platinum that stopped. I still use it in all of my cars today because of so.
I just picked up Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 0W-20 (5-quart, case of 3) on Amazon for the great price of $71.16 (or only $23.72 per jug)! I'm very happy with the purchase; my mailman less so. My Honda K24 also has no complaints.

What for a 2019 Golf R Wolfsburg edition? I have Mobil 1's 0W-30 ESP in it, and it's burning the oil level down fast. 0W-30 ESP is all what Walmart has that fits the Golf R's requirements. Pennzoil was above all the other majors when it came to the total package for TW3 on boat oils. Outstanding labs results. This was conducted by Bass & Walleye Boats many years ago showing all the perimeters. Been terrific for our program for 30 years.
I use TCW3 marine oil in my vehicles Jeep Grand Cherokee and Honda Ridgeline and Dodge Ram 1500 tradesman truck gasoline at 1oz per five gallons of gasoline. Works great been doing it for years. TCW3 burns ash less won’t harm catalytic converters or sensors. More doesn’t mean better here. You can read about using TCW3 in vehicles on Google. You won’t know your vehicle is running at idle. One gallon treats 640 gallons oil gasoline. Buy a quart try it in a few tanks. You won’t be disappointed.
I use Marine outboard TCW3 oil in the Volvo Jeep and my Ram 1500 gasoline at 1 oz per five gallon of gasoline. Works just like in the two cycle engines. Been doing this for years and the vehicle’s pass emissions inspection with flying colors. Try it in your vehicles you won’t know your vehicle is running at idle. Smooth
Used ultra platinum in gas vehicles after I dug up a several hundred page comparison between tons of oil and oils with additives and their relative performance. It's great stuff.
I used to be a long time Mobil 1 user for 20+ years. I tried Pennzoil Platinum and Ultra Platinum after doing a lot of research. Since using the Pennzoil Platinum/Ultra Platinum in both of my vehicles they both run smoother and quieter. I’m definitely a Pennzoil Platinum/Ultra platinum convert now.
I've been using it for over five years. The garage suggested upgrading to it, and it was immediately obvious. My engine ran smoother and revved quicker. Also less evaporation to cause deposits in DI engines.
I use this for my IS500 and it made a world of a difference:) i also used it in my 21 tundra! Doesnt burn oil and even after running it hard for 5k miles it still looks almost the same and doesnt smell burnt.
I have a 2015 Ecoboost 3.5 F-150. I’ve used mostly PUP and I did the valve cover gaskets from a prior timing chain cover leak under warranty that wasn’t done right. No fault of the oil. I was amazed at how clean the valve train was on the engine. Looked like brand new. Definitely sold me on the product. But I do change the oil before 4K miles so no doubt that helps.
I’ve had a 2009 5.4 since new. Well maintained with a variety of engine oils over the years starting with dealer Motorcraft oil for the first 8 years. Had the valve covers off last fall for the first time and it also still appeared as clean and shiny as new inside. I think it has more to do with proper oil change intervals using quality oil than one brand over another.
@alexanderkennedy2969 changing the oil at that mileage schedule, even regular oil will keep things clean. I use semi synthetic and change it out between 2800-4000 mi, depending on how long the oil has been in the engine
Thanks. Have a Jeep Cherokee with the 3.2 V6. It has the dry start issue, maybe because of the location of the oil cooler/filter housing located on top of the engine. I was using Mobil 1 extended performance. So I tried the ultra platinum based on your data. See if it’s quieter at startup. So far it actually is quieter. Time will tell, but so far so good thank you.
It will stay quieter too. I made the same switch on a 2012 silverado that had the very slight cold start tick at times, especially once i got to 3500-5k miles on the Mobile 1. Once I made the switch to PUP, the noise has gone, no matter how cold and all the way to my 5k change intervals. It also retains better oil pressure til the end of its 5k miles. It seems to be a far superior oil, and that's from someone who swore by M1 for many years. I've definitely been converted.
i use ultra platinum 5w30 in my turbo cx5 in northern Canada,, and sometimes i have to cold start below -36 celcius. it has never failed me. very good extreme cold performance.
Hope you plug the car in, have a battery warmer and interior car warmer. I plug my car in at those temps - but I don't care, I don't drive my car in -36°F weather. My outdoor plug in easily handles the power of everything (12.5 watts).
As a weirdo, when I drive my vehicle I'm always thinking about the internal workings of my motors as I drive them. To the point in my nice car I monitor oil and trans temps during regular drives. I find the look into the oils themselves and their individual properties to be very fascinating. I also want to try this oil now on my next change.. I have to watch more of your videos though to really decide, the research has only just begun
Honestly I'm on my initial factory oil. I'm at about 50,000 Miles..... Aauughh even just kidding about it makes me cringe. Nah, seriously, at about 1,000 Miles, have my first service with the dealer booked for April (It's parked for the winter). They're going to use factory AC Delco oil I'm sure, but when I'm off the leash of the first 2 services I WAS planning on Mobil 1 synthetic. I'm really liking the sounds of this Pennzoil Ultra Platinum though.. @@s7v7nfiv5
I've done a ton of research as a fellow weirdo. Once I got a new car I started watching a ton of videos on oil and how the car works. Lookup The Car Care Nut on youtube and how to make Toyota last over 300k miles. Same basic maintenance goes for almost every car. Best oil is a full synthetic like Amsoil but I prefer the Pennzoil Ultra Platinum because of the cost. As long as you're changing every 5k/6 months you're fine. As for the transmission fluid, you got to look up your specific car but the mechanic recommends drain and fills only and I'd say drop the pan to clean and also change transmission filter. Mechanics just say go with the OEM transmission fluid, but I decided to go with Amsoil Signature. It is a 100% synthetic and can withstand colder/hotter temps. It also has extended maintenance schedule although I will be following the recommendation schedule either way. Extra protection never hurts. A transmission or engine costs way more than oil.
I use this oil in my GR COROLLA and got better milage. Was wondering the difference so thanks for the tip. Im glad that I went to the PUP instead of the platinum. I guy told me that they were the same but now i know that it isn't 😊
I’ve been using this for years- almost as good as Amsoil and much cheaper. If only it were readily available in stores. A pain to get but so much better. Worth it.
@@steverugerguy9606 IF I have to have it shipped to me anyway, I am treating my baby to the Ravenol DXG stuff (yup, LOTS MORE $$$ but worth it!). Part of the reason for using any of the NOT truly synthetic, 'readily available and cheap' U.S. 'synthetic' oils is being able to just walk into Sino Mart and picking up a 5 gallon jug right OFF OF THE SHELF, for low bucks.😉
Just went from Platinum to Ultra in my 170K mile GM 3.0 V6. Platinum had 4200 miles on it and I changed it out today for Ultra. at 174K miles I'll take a gander at it. The oil I drained today looked much better than the Mobil 1 I had been using for the last 20 years.
You know, I noticed the same as I have been using Mobil 1 Extended Performance 0w20 in my Honda Accord since new all the time and every time I trained it the look of it disappointed me always. After watching Project Farm video, I decided to give it a try with Pennzoil Ultra Platinum when the car had 70K miles on the odometer. Despite the fact I me being skeptical, the engine started working quieter and smoother right away, literally no vibration. Then after some time I noticed that even the gas mileage slightly improved- I did mostly routine driving and make a note of every gas fill I do, so the gas mileage changed from 24-25 to 26-27 mpg. The same I did with my other car that was Toyota Avalon and I had the same effect. My mechanic still stands on his ground that Mobil1 is a better oil and I appreciate his experience and opinion, but in reality the numbers from the oil analysis report and my personal experience tells me different.
Project farm did a pennzoil test and I was blown away by how bad the cold flow rate was of the regular platinum. I HIGHLY recommend buying Ultra platinum if it fits your budget. If not, just grab some super tech lol
Super Tech used to be a good value, but these days if you look at the price you may as well by a name brand because you save maybe a dollar or two at most.
nothing wrong with supertech- have used it plus lucas oil stabilizer in my sentra (MR20DE) for the last 80K and have had no issues. i also use the lucas upper-cylinder lube in my fuel.
I like the one project farm did where he tested mobil 1 and amazon basics which is the same as super tech and kirkland, and the mobil 1 had better wear protection....
Bought a 2019 Infiniti QX60 brand new. 4.5years later still running strong using Pennzoil Platinum over 110,000 miles changing every 7,000 miles, and taking advantage of the rebates!
Got my first oil change in on my new Ecoboost 2.0L, just under 1,500 miles. Oddly, Ultra wasn't readily available from our vendors, it just disappeared from their order pages in the past week or so, but Platinum will do the trick. The biggest thing people need to understand is that it's important to change your oil! Don't solely rely upon manufacturers recommendations, nor upon oil life monitors; know your operating conditions, know the environment you operate in and it's demands upon maintenance too. My oil life monitor would have had me going over 10k. I'd never advocate that for anyone outside of fleet vehicle constantly traveling and not under extreme conditions/loads. I've worked in dealerships a good part of my life, I've seen what extended intervals can do, and certainly what being completely cheap when it comes to protecting your investment can do. It's always far better to spend an additional $100 a year on and oil change than having to spend upwards of $5000 for an engine replacement -- but try getting that across to some people.
@@hotrodray6802 Most of the vehicles being traded in at dealerships are around or just over the 100K mark. People don't buy cars and treat them like investments like they used to. They buy them, abuse them, then trade them in. A lot of cars are hitting 100K miles within 4-5 years now. I've got a customer with a 2018 Escape that is over 250K miles already. Have a customer with a 2019 Expedition that will likely break 200K miles this year.

I worked at a full service gas station in the 1970's, some of the big motor oil sellers were Wolf's Head....Veedol........Royal Triton, it had a purple tint to it.......Phillps 66 Trop Artic......Havoline..............usually 10/30 and 10/40 for the weight..........STP oil treatment as an oil additive..........Nox -Ice as gas line anti-freeze. Motor Oil was about 70 to 75 cents a quart!!!!!! The cheap non-detergent was Econo...35 cents a quart in a green cardboard can. Some were in metal quart cans, you had to puncture the can with the spout to pour it in the engine.
Great memories. I remember hand pumping oil out of a drum to fill quart glass bottles. Then twist on the red pointed spout/cap to pour a quart into the engine. It was one of the first jobs my dad gave me as a little kid. Thanks for reminding me. Good times.
Very nice video being a mechanical engineer working in rotating machinery for heavy API I really appreciate your approach and review of the data and the aspects you have shared and your experience.
I started out using Valvoline oil back in 1973. I first tried Mobil 1 in 1982 while living in the Denver, CO metro area. Switched to Penzoil 5w30 Euro L, in 2016 for my Ram Ecodiesel, but that got changed to Rotella T6 5w40. When I bought a 2020 Dodge Durango, I put Penzoil Platinum 0w20 for the first oil change. Then switched to Penzoil Ultra Platinum 0w40 after that. I drive predominantly highway miles on speed control. I had one oil change that I could not get the Ultra Platinum. And I could feel a difference. Back in August of 2023 I bought a Jeep JLU Sport S Altitude. The Jeep will get the Ultra Platinum 0w40 with its second oil change too. Todays synthetics are impressive. My wife's 2018 Ram 2500 6.7L runs Rotella T6 5w40 all year round. And when the dealer mistakenly put 15w40 oil in instead of the 5w40 I requested. Even the tech noticed a change in the way the engine ran. Run Penzoil Ultra Platinum for gasoline engines, and Rottella T6 for diesel. For the best costs to benefits.
@@geojohnson5613not quite true, several vehicles sold in America call for one type of oil and the exact same vehicle in other countries call for a different oil in the same engine. A lot of it has to do with fuel mileage requirements. Research it yourself.
@@diegaspumper8501 I agree with you to a certain extent that it's also about trying to squeeze out that extra 1/2 mile to gallon of gas. I also know that the VVT system is complex and requires a lower viscosity oil. The camshaft solenoids have very fine screens that the oil must pass through to activate the cam phasers. Use the oil viscosity specified by the manufacturer and change it often.
I tried PUP 5W-20 for the first oil change in my new 3.2L v6 2022 Cherokee. I noted a nearly immediate increase in my mileage. So far, it's jumped about 1.5 mpg. So just recently iv becom a follower of Lake and some how this video was the first I stumbled upon. So forst thing first . I drive a 2016 f 150. I always used mobile 1 5w20 in it. And it was always noisy ALWAYS!!! I asked mechanics, I asked ford technicians, I asked ford corporate.they all said the same thing....."these trucks just have a little more engine noise than most others" to be clear what I was hearing sounded like a very soft valve tick. I mean from day 1- mile 0 this truck ticked very softly. Fast forward to present day (5-9-24) I switched to Pennzoil ultra platinum 5w20. And this motor is SIGNIFICANTLY quieter. Runs smoother (seemingly) . Im glad I switched. Lake thank you for giving some indepth insight into the quality of oil and what makes it a good oil.
In experimenting with different motor oils a few years ago, saw that with PUP on my '14 Accord, it's quieter right away. No more tick sounds (from the lifters I believe). A real audible difference. This was proof that PUP was doing something different. I've since switched to PUP on the newer ES exclusively. Only wish is that PUP was more readily available.
I have a Sentra I use as an around town gas saver, my G8 with a 6.8 stroker gets 8 mpg and we use my wife's ML350 Mercedes as a family trip car. I just got some of the ultra platinum on sale on Amazon in 0w40 and put it in the Sentra today; my results were exactly the same as yours. I've never run cheap oil in any of my cars, even the Nissan gets group 4 or 5 oil. The car has never been quieter right off the bat until today, it's always been a particularly noisy four cylinder. I swear by the Mobil 1 FS 0w40 Euro for the Mercedes, but I just went back and ordered another pack of the Pennzoil for it as well just to see how it does with that motor.
used the ultra on my wrx for 3 years no issue, great fuel mileage. got an sti in july, drained whatever was in there after 1000 miles. put the ultra in and instantly gained 4-5 mpg. this oil is magic
Yes in Project Farm's test Pennz Ultra Platinum was only beat by Amsoil signature series. What I would like to see though is a wear test between all 3 Amsoil grades(Sig Series vs XL boosted vs OE) to see if a lower one can match the SS on the wear tests. That would be very helpful.
@@alejandrotobienne8220 I don't think you can say that confidently. I doubt supertech is that great as I've heard some horror stories from people using it but I've also heard some good info on it too.
I agree. The Signature Series used to be the only of those three oils which advertised being 100% synthetic on the bottle, which lead a lot of people to believe that it was a "real" group 4 PAO based synthetic while their OE and XL oils were made from group 3 base stocks. Now all three of those oils claim to be 100% synthetic, so it's unclear what changed, if anything. My guess is they probably just started marketing group 3 oils as "100% synthetic" instead of "full synthetic" like they used to, but I could be wrong.
Now they have Amsoil Signature Series, Extended-life, OE, High-mileage, and Hybrid Full Synthetics. I would like to test all FIVE and have the results side by side. I believe they reformulated when they changed the oil filters. Fram Endurance filters and Amsoil filters are identical from Champion labs.
@@Balticblue93 Good point, I didn't know they came out with hybrid or high mileage oils. If we want to get technical, they also have Premium Protection, Z Rod, Dominator racing oil, small engine oils, motorcycle oils, marine oils, diesel oils, and quite possibly others that I'm forgetting about.

Thanks Lake for this video and sharing your findings. The 5w40 spec oil used in some Porsches will require the Euro Platinum oil. On Pennzoil’s own website it does not state that the Euro Platinum has the “extreme performance” indicated for the Ultra Platinum oils. The Euro oil has the Porsche A40 specification which likely means it has a different additive package and sadly missing the molybdenum. It would be interesting to do a VOA on the Euro oil.

Excellent video and explanation! I just bought the Ultra Platinum for my 2024 Silverado with the 5.3L V8. Really want to make sure this thing is well protected.
From Leo: I believe you have done a great presentation and very sound science. In my life experience, my work had a high degree of travel, like 40K miles a year. 8 cylinder, 6 cylinder and 4 cylinder domestic cars, generally kept them over 4 years. I always started thinking about oil changes at about 3500 to 4000 miles, used whatever brand name dino oil and filter that the convenient oil change place sold. I never had a lubrication failure in anything, clear back to antiquated SE and SF rated oils. We have all these advances, yet valve gear and cam failure is at an all time high even in well maintained cars. Maybe the old zinc cam additives were a lot better than we gave credit.
Thanks for sharing! The higher ZDDP oil with lower detergent levels did a great job with valve train protection. Plus the highway miles are actually easier on the oil, so you regular oil changes also helped. You did well!
During the 70’s, 80’s and early 90’s I was a traveling auto parts salesman and around a lot of engine tear downs. Some of the nastiest then had been using Pennzoil, Quaker State and Gulf oil all of which I was told were paraffin based oils. I presumed they have gotten away from that. Some of the cleanest tear downs were with Valvoline and Havoline. All of these oils were with regular oil changes of 2500 miles which was the general recommended at that time.
I am old enough to remember when a lot of people steered clear of oils based on Pennsylvania crude due to the high wax (paraffin) content. No idea if that is valid now or even valid then but your anecdotal evidence of the engine tear downs seems to indicate it was.
A lot of people saying Pennzoil as a whole is junk are probably either old enough to remember when it wasn't all that great or they're just regurgitating info from people who are behind the times. I'm in my early 40's and remember in the early 2000's the LS in my Silverado starting to knock after about 2000 miles using conventional Pennzoil and Quaker State but never had a problem with Castrol GTX. To be clear, I was burning rubber everywhere I went and was really hard on my oil. I still won't run Pennzoil conventional but tests have shown their Ultra Platinum is about as good as it gets as a daily driver oil. My HEMI seems to be happy with Ultra Platinum.
Since the ultra platinum seems to have more detergent additives, I was curious if you could do a comparison with the major synthetic blend oils out there to see who had the best detergents.
Royal Purple has a great detergent package. It will clean even the dirtiest of motors with several changes. The downside of that is obviously the price. It's quite a bit more expensive than the others.
Search youtube for Amsoil or Pennzoil, which wins Championship? Let's find out! by Projectfarms. He has oil analysis on most oils. I prefer higher antiwear additives for the summer heat.
Yes, there IS a difference! Project Farm proved it years ago! BTW, I don't know about where you live, but down at Puerto Rico, the Ultra Platinum is extremely difficult to get; it's very scarce! Pennzoil should just drop the regular Platinum!!!
Been using it in my vehicles for 2 years now, project farm Convinced me. I use Amsoil in my Dirtbike, just can’t afford it for the truck, this tested damn close to the Amsoil.
Beautiful, thank you, ...I was always curious about the difference between these two oils. I have a turbo engine and like the Pennzoil GTL purebase oils.
You continue to teach me truths concerning motor oils. Thank you! You explain the technical at a 6th grade level. You are a great teacher. For the second time. Thank you! Sometimes I wonder about which oil to use in my 15-20 year old Toyotas and Lexuses? Are the SP oils ok to use?
I use the Pennzoil Platinum in my 2012 Mustang V-6, bought used in 2016 with low mileage. Take the guesswork out of the your oil's effectiveness. When I first got the car, i started on the Pennzoil. Then for the next couple oil changes, I had a sample sent to Blackstone. They were able to tell me the oil still had plenty of life left, and was low on contaminants. So I eventually stretched my change interval to 8000 miles. At that interval, oil was still good and low on contaminants. I elected to stop there, since I don't drive the car all that much, and 8000 miles takes me about a year. So I would want to change it then anyway just based on time. So what about the Ultra Platinum? Based on my experience and the measured results I received from Blackstone, I don't believe the extra cost and protection is warranted in my *particular* situation. Perhaps if I drove more or harder, the step-up might be justified. But that's my point: don't guess, measure and go from there.
I can sit and listen to this channel all day. I'm going to get a jug of this in 5w20 for me 2003 accord and in 0w20 for my 2013 accord v6. See what happens
Cant say enough good things about PUP...my SUV gas mileage went up to 32mog after switching from Mobil 1 a couple years back, oil analysis indicates a solid 10k lifespan in my SUV (I don't go that long), and a quick look at my valve train using a scope inside my oil cap shows little to no deposits at 97,500 miles.
Awesome video and thank you for making it. I would also love to hear your thoughts and analysis on Valvoline Advanced and their high mileage max life stuff.
Lake, after seeing the episode of Lubrication Explained you were in, I have some confusion on oxidation value as it related to DI engines. In that discussion, it was noted that a more robust additive package was not necessarily a good thing in all cases for DI engines. Might be a good subject for clarification... at least for me! Love these presentations!
Thanks for the question. Hopefully this can clear things up. More “Robust” is code for a higher level of all additives, especially calcium based detergents. The high level of Calcium detergent (over 2,500 ppm) the problem for DI engines. It seems that 1,500 ppm or lower on Calcium, LSPI is not a problem, which is why both of these oils are good for DI engines.
@@themotoroilgeek Is it ONLY the calcium levels which adversely effect the GTDI engines, or do any of the other (boron, magnesium, manganese, titanium, etc.) detergents/dispersants also potentially cause harm? Does the calcium also work against any anti-foaming agents added to modern oils as well (or overwhelm them in high PPM concentrations)??
Shell, that owns Pennzoil, was originally planning to refine oil from natural gas in the US, but then decided it would be more economical to just keep refining it in Qatar. Quaker State synthetic oil is not supposed to be from natural gas, but now, some weights of Quaker State synthetic oil are, but with pre canned, cheaper additive packages.
I was an avid Mobil 1 user for 20 years. I switched to Pennzoil over a decade ago with no regrets. In early 2016, I bought a leftover 2015 Sonata 2.0T. I didn't know about the Theta II engine issues when I bought it but I treated it like every new vehicle I buy. First oil change at 1000 mi with Pennzoil Platinum 5W30. Second oil change at 3500 with the same. Third oil change at 8,000 mi but switched to 5W40. I noticed through burn off and other direct injected engine abuse, I lost about a half a quart between 5,000 mi services. I switched to 0w40 Ultra Platinum at around 15,000 mi because I read it had a better burn-off rate and there was no 5W40 Ultra Platinum. The oil loss dropped to maybe a half a cup of oil between 5,000 mi services. The valve cover gasket was being replaced at 80,000 mi under warranty. I asked my service guy if I could go out and take a look at the top end while he had the valve cover off just to see if what I was doing was worthwhile. If I could post a picture here I would. The engine was immaculate. No varnish anywhere. No discoloration. It looked brand new. It was running beautifully at 100,000 miles when it was totaled thanks to a 12R24.5 truck tire lol.
If you're still monitoring this comment, I sincerely want to know, why did you choose a Hyundai over say, a used Camry or Honda Accord? What about this car did you like vs the Japanese cars and what was the deciding factor? And would you buy it again?
@@robertmaybeth3434 I'm 6ft2, 205lbs, and have nerve damage in my legs and feet from cancer nearly taking me out. So legroom and seat comfort are paramount to me. Comfort is of course subjective, but the seats in neither the Camry or Accord in any trim level was comfortable enough for me. I bought a 2008 Sonata on a whim just because I needed a commuter car. It was used and already had 30,000 mi. That was October of 2008. By December of 2012, it had over 170,000 mi on it and it never broke. So I went with the 2015 based on the reliability of the 2008, without knowing about the Theta II engine issues before I bought it. Served me well for the 100,000 mi I drove it before a truck tire took it out. I'm at almost 3.5 years and 52K on the 21 N Line and it has been just as reliable...

Project Farms did it and Amsoil barely squeaked by Penzoil Ultra Platinum. I would just stick with Penzoil to save the money. Its almost half of what Amsoil is and provides almost identical protection.
Even though they already went head to head, I just want to see what SPEEDiagnostix finds in Amsoils virgin sample compared to Blackstone that Project Farm uses for the learning experience. They may do tests a little different than Blackstone does.

API, SAE standards are just that. However with the increase cost of vehicles, fuel and oil competition, its great to see which companies are producing top tier oils that ARE the best in this arena. Just meeting a standard is the minimum to produce and sell. Today , the shear properties and additives are terrific. Thank you for the content.
Boron nitride is a very effective extreem pressure additive. Has been used in steam locomotives since the 1850's. I used boron to lubricate automatic welding heads. Boron on the fingers feels a bit like fine locksmith graphite.
Hexagonal boron nitride actually has a chemical structure that is very similar to graphite, so they have similar properties. The boron nitride has a major advantage of not being combustible or electrically conductive. Did you know you can buy solid sticks of the stuff? Hugely expensive, but if you need to make a low friction bushing that can survive inside a furnace I guess there aren't many alternatives.
I remember when Royal purple came out, they claimed a 10 hp increase if you switched out all your fluids to theirs. Think it was horse power tv, did it and it did make more hp, but did dyno number’s get fudged to make them look good, seeing that they were a sponsor of the show.
I don't know about RP. If it's a good true synthetic base and not a gtl group III & conventional petroleum mishmash I'd say sure it's possible. I have heard some folks say they have actually seen some fuel mileage improvements using the AMSOIL Signature Series oils. So there's that.
@@FishFind3000 yeah but straight 30, 10w30, 5W30 and even 0W30 are all supposed to be thirty W at operating temperature. So what would be the difference other than their low temp viscosities being different. Surely they wouldn't do a Dyno pull with a cold engine huh?

I became an Ultra Platinum convert after that Project Farm competition. Nearly as good as Amsoil but not nearly as expensive, especially at major retailers' sale prices.
One year edit: Wow, I didn't anticipate this starting such a broad discussion. Again, Shell has the global economies of scale to offer superior value.
Virtually identical in every aspect, at a far lower price. Its cold-flow properties are best in class.
Same here! Basically the same oil for darn near half the price. Combine that with the Purolator Boss filter and you get essentially equal performance for much less money.
@@richestmanbutnotlikethat Amsoil oil filters aren't nearly top-of-the-line. If you cut one open, it is as basic as it gets.

290k miles on my Acura TL on mobil 1 synthetic, great oil.
@@civicpride1986yes it is....i personally think mobil 1 is hard to beat in the real world and longetivity.
This has been my go-to oil as well for my GR86. Daily driven with annual HPDE events. No complaints so far!

What viscosity?

Dear Oil Geek
My ultra premium complements to your contributions as regards oil. Please keep it up!!! It is way beyond appreciated
Many thanks!!!
Agreed, shorter drain intervals are better than long drain intervals.
Who actually keeps a car that long?
Veeeeery few.
@@hotrodray6802 I don't know, I work in a dealership and see cars with high mileage all the time. Well over 100k isn't that unusual.

Some were in metal quart cans, you had to puncture the can with the spout to pour it in the engine.

Dang.. so basically you tried them all...lol
Always use the viscosity recommended by the manufacturer. Using a higher viscosity can be detrimental to the engine due to lack of lubrication.
I use amsoil SS in my 2UR-GSE but in all my other vehicles I use PUP, I've been very happy with it since I started using it.

I went from Mobil 1 (which is great oil also) to Pennzoil Ultra Platinum in my Mustang and Pennzoil Platinum in my F-150.

OE isn’t even better than Supertech honestly

Thanks for sharing. The base oils have come along way since then. These new GTL base oils are a completely new breed.

Sometimes I wonder about which oil to use in my 15-20 year old Toyotas and Lexuses? Are the SP oils ok to use?
Wow, thank you!
Yes, it's perfectly fine to use an API SP certified engine oil in your 15-20 year old Toyota and Lexus vehicles.
Measuring is the key. I agree, there is no need for guesswork.

@@themotoroilgeek Got it, thanks. Went back and reviewed the Lubrication Explained vid and with your explanation, now I am totally clear.

First time watcher. Love the episode and subscribed. Just a tip on editing, the music was a little loud and sometimes drowned out you talking. Keep it up. Thanks for the content.
Thanks for watching!
Hey Lake! Awesome video as usual. Now compare Amsoil Signature Series 5w30 VS. Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 5w30. Thanks man!
Project Farms did it and Amsoil barely squeaked by Penzoil Ultra Platinum. I would just stick with Penzoil to save the money. Its almost half of what Amsoil is and provides almost identical protection.
@@bearing_aficionadoAmsoil did better in the wear test, which is probably the most important test.
@@darrylsjodin7184
And cold flow.
Even though they already went head to head, I just want to see what SPEEDiagnostix finds in Amsoils virgin sample compared to Blackstone that Project Farm uses for the learning experience. They may do tests a little different than Blackstone does.
@@thomasseigfriedjr.9198 Yes, I would like to see that too!😀
I hope you can find the Ultra Platinum, Lake. I haven't been able to find any, except for the people who want $97.00/Gal for it.
If you’re talking about Walmart/Amazon those are resellers marking it up when Walmart and Amazon are out of stock.
Walmart sells Ultra Platinum for $32 for 5 quart jug.
Pretty easily to obtain normally
@@BC08 yeah there's never any on the shelf here at our Walmart. The parts stores are ridiculous and 46 to $55 for a 5 quart jug
@@TheLonesometoad Yeah, I’m talking about ordering off the internet.
Walmart will ship to your house.
Looking for Ultra Platinum on the shelf is almost impossible.
Walmart online
YIKES! That makes my fave, Ravenol DXG @ $75.00 shipped for a 5 liter jug seem downright cheap!!
Will be running this in my GM, even though is not dexos approved. Thank you.
Ultra is I believe
I run it in my 2019 ram 5.7. I change it every 4000 kilometers and hope to keep the dreaded hemi lifter failure away... good video, cheers
Thanks!
I remember when Royal purple came out, they claimed a 10 hp increase if you switched out all your fluids to theirs. Think it was horse power tv, did it and it did make more hp, but did dyno number’s get fudged to make them look good, seeing that they were a sponsor of the show.
Their control was probably a thick 30w oil vs thinner synthetic that didn’t rob the engine of hp from working through thicker oils.
LOL! If you believe that, I have a nice bridge for sale.
It’s was only like 10 hp, for all the fluids, trans, diff, and oil.
Id like to see some Amsoil breakdowns between their OE, XL and Signature.
That could be interesting!
I use this in my daughter’s 2014 Chevy Cruze Diesel. Seems to be doing it’s job.
Project farm won me over to Pennzoil ultra platinum. It is the best product for the money. Its almost as good as amsoil and half the price.
I have nothing but good results using Pennzoil for 40;years.
that’s good to hear
Back in the 70s, they had a bad detergent package, clearly that's changed.
Looking forward for the follow up of using the Ultra platinum in the Porsche.
Your videos are great. I've been using PUP and PP for a long time. I'd be curious to see your interpretation on these vs the Valvoline Premium Full Syn Extended and Premium Extended High Mileage. There has been a lot of talk on these oils on BITOG.
Also, the Mobil One Advanced vs. Extended version - Thank you!
Great suggestion!
Compare to valvoline for sure ......nice add pack on the valvoline high mileage
We had a 05 gmc 1500 in our work truck fleet , when we sold it there was 490000 km on it . Engine never touched except a water pump and a starter . It was a 5.3. It only had ultra platinum pennzoil from day one
I have been here watching your videos So firstly I'd like to say thank you for sharing this knowledge its been helpful in me deciding on what oil to buy for my next oil change......Thanks from Canada
On my hemi Ram I use ultra platinum and add about 8oz liquimoly with wix filters. No lifter/valve tick.
Ive used Mobile 1 and Castrol on my Lexus LS430. And Penzoil has been the best. Cars smoother and quicker. Good video.
