Hiram was a big man, and his stooping down and slinking away transition out of that phenomenal solo was one of the classiest stage moves I've ever seen!!!! RIP Hiram.
Nothing on television has coveyed the pure joy of music making as vividly as Night Music. The musicians are clearly thrilled by the challenge of melding dispirate styles and genres and their enthusiasm is infectious to anyone with eyes and ears!
everyone is Killing' lovingly.....with great dynamics and space....Carla and her Daughter Karen,Steve's minimalistic elegant solo, Bootsy didn't need to play da bass 'cause:Tom's Booty Bass!! and Jonathan Sanborn(dave's Son)...3 bass players!!..Don Alias and Omar's Pocket ever so funky...no matter what kind of guitar Hiram plays, there's literally no words to describe his undeniable god like guitar solo and then Bootsy and pretty fat & Steve and horn section and Sanborn's screaming wailing horn.....just unbelievable lots of love & respect
Steve Swallow...wonderful tone. Some people dont like his tone. But I like it. Its like a dub tone like when you run an electric through a low pass filter + boss octaver. Its got a lil fuzz to it but its good for solid low end support. Its nice to have a clip of how the Parker bass sounds as well...
Loved this show in highschool. I have a VHS tape full of recorded episodes. Omar Hakim was a huge influence on me and Hiram was a phenomenal guitarist and I didn't know he'd passed. RIP. This show was ahead of it's time for sure. Thanks for posting this.
i videotaped (vhs) this piece back in 1989 or 1990 i think and i truly believe that steve swallows bass solo around 2:20 is one of the most moving ive ever heard....not a lot of notes, but it hits just right....
I'll never get tired of hearing this. Shame on Booties for not announcing the first part of the performance was Carla Bley’s Lawns. The last part was Healing Power. Give credit where it is due. All great talent. Bootie is just holding the mic.
So much talent in one room. Most excellent! A fine moment in my life when I saw this live. Carla, Steve, HIram, and Sanborn. Thanks for making it available for my continued enjoyment.
That's what I'm talkin' about! This is about the best thing I've ever seen on 'Tube. What a treat! 4 bassists! (counting Bootsy :-) Tom Barney grinning and grooving behind Steve Swallow's lead at ~2:55 is choice! I've never seen a group this big besides a symphony orchestra get so much on the same page and make so much music. Hiram - such a voice, and here a fiery contrast to the Lawns vibe. All this and Bootsy. See also of course "Carla Bley - Sextet". Thanks for the post!
So many great moments on this fantastic show, way ahead of it's time. Sanborn's choice of guests was breathtaking. The wonderful duets with Phil Woods and another with Tim Berne, show just how wide a choice of music Sanborn was open to, amazing!
Omg! Thanks for posting this, I absolutely Loved this show and this episode is my favorite. I wish that we could buy this type of stuff for the money spent on cable. Programming on tv sucks now a days.
i loved the show. thank you so much for posting. "lawns" is amazing--and as a part of "healing power" is even better. and the solo by bullock, along w his solo on sting's version of little wing, are two of the finest... btw, has anyone found the program when sting played LW on night music?
I've been looking for this song since watching this episode over 20 years ago. Thought it was Bootsy Collins' band all along but it was actually Carla Bley's 2 songs. Duh! A Big Thanks for posting it.
I did a double take when I saw the woman playing the organ. I thought, how did Carla get over to the organ from the piano and then when they panned out it looked like 2 Carla's, one at the piano and one at the organ. I didn't know the organist was her daughter.
i'm constantly checking netflix and amazon but never see it. greatest music show ever. i only wished they had someone better than sanborn for the host; a very skilled musician, but he never fit in to me.
6:45 Bootsy says “yeah Carla, that’s what I’m talkin bout, don’t be so mean!” Also, Sanborns intro discussion with Bootsy leads me to believe Carla Bley May have had some issues with the whole production. More than likely the pace. Her performance had an error.at 1:40-1:42 which drew a side glance from the drummer and a smile from the brother on bass.

I certainly agree.

What a solo by hiram.... R i p . Men
I absolutely loved watching this show every week

best tv show ever.
I wasn’t old enough at the time to appreciate this, but holy💩 is this incredible.
This was one of the greatest music shows ever on television. Hiram RIP, I only just found out from reading it here.

Listened to this 12years ago. Here i am again in 2023
Me too!
Still 2024 From Korea.
I find myself going back to this about every 3 months for the last 6 years.
Oh man, this brings back so many memories. Used to watch this great show religiously back in the day.

Mike Todd I absolutely AGREE 100% and have always felt the same about his solo!
You can set metronomes and clocks to Steve's playing... 🙂
So precise, so solid...
What a monster...
Hiram I miss you!
me too ! Amazing and on top!!!!!

this vibe is so sweet
Many thanks! I miss Night Music so much---simply one of the greatest musical shows ever on the air.

The best moment in a show with many best moments.
Wow I love Swallow's bass never saw one looked like it,
Amazing footage. What a class act.
What a great show. I hope this series is re-released on DVD, I'd buy it in a second

Thought of Hiram today. Great to hear this.
Carla looking so cool there!
But, how could that lady be playing the piano and the Hammond organ at the same time? Amazing!
that's her daughter Karen
he reminds me of Jimi with the way that he speaks.
whaou j'adore
Thank you Carlton for this amazing video.

Wonderful I loved it. I play it all the time.
what a power! thank you for posting
The best.
This is how I met Carla and her music.
RIP Carla Bley. The first tune is Lawns by Carla.
Can't get past it for a great Jazz ride. Zee Zee Writer
Yeah this is Lawns then Healing Power.
I don't think the title of this Carla Bley song is "Healing Power" I believe this is "Lawns"
For who might turn the channel as the intro sounds not you wanted to find.
Lawns (0:00 ~ 3:00)
Healing Power (3:00 ~ )
Omg! Thanks for posting this, I absolutely Loved this show and this episode is my favorite. I wish that we could buy this type of stuff for the money spent on cable. Programming on tv sucks now a days.

That's Carla's daughter, Karen Mantler on the organ......
WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW
Watch intro -- the musical one -- ten times... and it stiall sounds amazing.
('Night Music ruled -- thx!)
Bellísimo ,magistral

Very nice!
I was gonna say I recognized Bley and Swallow straight off.
Yup...they flew in straight from Planet Claire in their Klingon Battle Cruiser.
so much love thank you all
cool arrangement with two electric basses! I wonder whos idea that was
I did a double take when I saw the woman playing the organ. I thought, how did Carla get over to the organ from the piano and then when they panned out it looked like 2 Carla's, one at the piano and one at the organ. I didn't know the organist was her daughter.
Озарение Карлы Блей, ставшее хитом.
NORMA Y MIMI PONS ...FALTA GASALLA Y LISTO
.GRANDE !!!!!!!!
Bootsy: "Yeah, Carla, that's what I'm talkin' about!". 6:45, yep...
uubuuh yeah Carla, that’s what I’m talkin bout, don’t be so mean!
paddlebro is right, a medley of Carla Bley's "Lawns" and "Healing Power" Come on grab the one you love and get some Healing Power...
how the two Carla Bleys are on hammond and piano simultaneously?
...actually 'Lawns' and Healing Power'...
☝️😎
i'm constantly checking netflix and amazon but never see it. greatest music show ever. i only wished they had someone better than sanborn for the host; a very skilled musician, but he never fit in to me.
you're right!
when i saw the female piano player i did guess by the hair style, Carla Bley..with Steve Swallow in bass guitar
Jools Holland does something similar on his show in the UK. I wonder if this is where he got the idea?
Some shredders out there could take a lesson in "taste" from Hiram.
that is carla's daughter, karen mantler.
is this on DVD yet??
Can someone tell me how I can get this guitar tone?
Carla .... of course
Does anybody know how her piano sounds so electric? It doesn't sound like the sound of an acoustic grand piano at all?
@oneidabow1 John Coltrane is my grandfather

She composed the tune, so she is entitled to make a mistake
bluecrueful, entitlement has nothing to do with it. Talent does.
thats right , dont be so mean talking about HEALING POWER
This is 'Lawns' not 'Healing Power'
Sadly Miss Bley is gone as well.
only in americ a
Whose on horns???
Mister David Sanborn
@@Jojomusic007 yeah i know him. I mean two other guys. Trumpet and bass saxophone
@@maspionable Trumpet is Steven Bernstein, who did a lot of work with Hal Willner, the music producer of the show. Check them both out!!
Good grief!
Hiram was always fantastic on this show, but that guitar he's using stinks! Locking nuts and floating trems completely rob you of tone....
