This was the great Geffen period when Pat and Lyle had complete artistic control to produce and release content with NO corporate interference from A&R or finance personnel. Geffen basically gave them the keys to the studio and all the time needed for composing, recording, and release.
The PMG were Geffen’s only “jazz” artists at the time, so the company could focus their entire support/promotion on them (ECM and Warner Bros. had numerous other jazz/instrumental artists to promote)
The greatest era for the Pat and Lyle, simply mesmerizing compositions and musicianship. I told my sister when I die I want anything Pat Metheny played at my wake... ANYTHING!
That was the best musical show ever; David Sanborn had the most amazing musical guests from every genre. But nothing this good can last. people were too dumb to appreciate it.
I know it's been a long time ago but I'm still angry that this show went off. Of course now David's no longer with us. I love the end when he would put musicians from different genres together and have them perform a piece

I have seen Pat Metheny several times in concert and he is amazing. When Pat is playing that guy is in the zone. A bomb could go off right next to him and he would not even skip a note.
Actually one time I was at his concert near back of audience. This old lady missed a step and fell down and probably cracked her hip and shot her pants. Very bad fall. Her kids yelled and maybe y actually looked up to see what was happening. Idk if he was soloing at the time tho now that I think about it 🤔
The band played this entire album at the Capital theater in Port Chester NY to "Get ready for the studio recording" it was like nothing I've ever heard before from the group.

kim burley yeah the music is probably best described as some specification of fusion. But the way Pat plays is absolutely akin to jazz guitar. He is a jazz guitarist

I remember watching this episode back in the day. Big Metheny Group fanboy here. RIP Lyle. Of note David William Sanborn (July 30, 1945 - May 12, 2024) died after a years-long battle with prostate cancer. He was 78. RIP.
I"ll never forget the first time I listened to this sound and the perfirmance of this amazing PMG lineup. Pat, Lyle, Armando, Steve, Paul, Pedro... you all changed my vision of the world... and I'll forever appreciate it. Thanks for the magic, guys. Godspeed, Lyle. RIP
One of my favorite songs from my favorite era. Pat is deep in the zone for the his solo, he’s almost possessed. The outro almost made me scream and I’ve listened to this song probably 1000 times. The transition from the guitar solo to Lyle smashing out those chords is so slick I’m not sure that I even can find the cue. I played in a punk band for over 10 years and we used to make fun of other punk bands that would just stand there when they performed and we always tried to have energy on stage. And here this is a jazz group - and look at pat! What an amazing performance!

Very true ... it's EXACTLY what it is today and the problem with giving people what they already know what they want is that it makes it even harder to experience something truly refreshing and something that could actually open's ones sensibilities to what music can give them.
This performance by The Pat Metheny Group is absolutely electrifying. It's almost impossible for me to put into words. Magnificent, transcendent and phenomenal.
One thing I was just admiring is how percussionist Armando Marcal is visible in almost every shot, and shows his beautiful contribution to the groove along with drummer Paul Wertico. This whole thing is so beautifully shot - every angle shows at least three musicians, and you can tell that they are all totally locked into each other. And the camera catches many specific important musical moments and interactions. And the sound is great. Everything I've ever seen from "Night Music" has first class from a technical and artistic perspective. None of that "showing the singers ear during the guitar solo" kind of concert movie lameness.

From Screaming Jay Hawkins to the Pat Metheny Group and all points in between. Superb performances and show. David Sanborn had the clout to bring any artist to the show and he allowed them to do their own thing within the structure of the show. His personality and his own artistry allowed him to fully appreciate other artists. A cool, smooth, humble and nicely put together chap.
Nothing to be ashamed of there!! I was lucky enough to be able to get a picture taken with him in 1985 when I was 21 and get my First Circle album autographed. Thrilling.

One of the most amazing concerts I ever witnessed. I think that was when that band was at its most extreme peak, even though they were always great.

I have watched this performance about 15 times tonight I am mesmarized I keep my eyes on those fingers eating that guitar up making that instrument do much more than it ever would have .
Bassists more often than not generally get overlooked by listeners (especially in rock), when in fact a great bassist will always enhance the guitar so much. Guitarists get auditions. Bassists get gigs.

@mayoman100 - I agree! There are other performances of this song, plus the released studio version, and they are all excellent. But THIS performance seems especially sublime - the whole band seems as musically connected to each other and to the music as I've ever heard.

Interesting placement of the drummer right out front. Never to underestimate drummers, of course. Paul Wertico lays down a beautiful groove throughout.

Even though the bodies and face are aging now, thank heaven for this digital era and the opportunity to hear and see, over and over again, genius at its peak, having more fun than kids in a sandbox. I like this version even better than the studio album. But these guys could play 'chopsticks' and I'd love it.
+Steve Martin - I think you nailed it, The music itself is impeccable, as we would expect from musicians of this caliber, but the thing that really makes this clip special is the palpable sense of joy. You can tell these guys are having a blast!
+rednoise0 Yeah ... can't help but to jump up and down and yell out a whoop when Pat ends with that ear-to-ear, country-boy, Missouri grin! Which kind shocked me when he went all medieval on Kenny G. Not that I disagree with Pat, I just never expected to read or hear anything that angry coming from him. I guess we are all human, but Pat (and a handful of others) are still at the top of the pantheon for me.
It's extremely clear they were either just finished with doing this for the album or were about to - it sounds almost exactly like the CD version. I loved seeing these guys play live, too - back in Dallas when the Still Life (Talking) CD came out. I think it was actually on my birthday too!
For anyone who hasn't heard it, listen to the Pat Metheny Group's "Travels," a very dynamic live collection. Another favorite album of mine is PMG's "Imaginary Day." Just close your eyes and let it take you away.
I saw this lineup at a nice theatre , the sound was stellar but the guy sitting next to me had sinus problems , kept wheezing , sniffling . Talk about someone getting in the way of something so amazing to listen to .

The first time I saw Pat Metheney was in 1987 (First Circle tour). I had never heard him prior to that show. I was blown away of course, but the real standout that night was Lyle Mays.
@@TheRobWay1 The First Circle tour was 1984 (I saw them in Tampa in November of that year). If I’m not mistaken, 1987 would have been Still Life Talking. Also a wonderful record and tour.
For me this is golden era Metheny-Mays/Group music. It's the period of Pat's career (Lyle's, too) that I enjoyed the most and I wish it had lasted longer. But as time went on, it evolved into something different, and it never captured my attention in the same way. The Way Up and Speaking Of Now were the albums that marked the fading of the legendary Pat Metheny Group, at least for me. While I practically wore out every Group album before those two, those two didn't get a lot of replays.
The Way Up is really cool too though. It’s a totally different vibe altogether. I definitely agree it doesn’t have the same kind of synth magic like Last Train Home or the tunes on Letter from Home.

I find everything Pat plays is not just amazing , but it’s so damn musical . Fabulous!

I think they could be a jazz fussion band since they played many different styles with a jazzistic basis. However it's difficult to clasify them.

+rednoise0 Yeah ... can't help but to jump up and down and yell out a whoop when Pat ends with that ear-to-ear, country-boy, Missouri grin! Which kind shocked me when he went all medieval on Kenny G. Not that I disagree with Pat, I just never expected to read or hear anything that angry coming from him. I guess we are all human, but Pat (and a handful of others) are still at the top of the pantheon for me.
It's extremely clear they were either just finished with doing this for the album or were about to - it sounds almost exactly like the CD version. I loved seeing these guys play live, too - back in Dallas when the Still Life (Talking) CD came out. I think it was actually on my birthday too!
Pedro Aznar. Wow. The whole damn thing is great.
This still for me is his best music ever of this great musician and also the best band of Metheny, no doubts.
It's the first time I have listened to a group who plays live as wonderfully as it were in the studio! I'm spellbound!

For anyone who hasn't heard it, listen to the Pat Metheny Group's "Travels," a very dynamic live collection. Another favorite album of mine is PMG's "Imaginary Day." Just close your eyes and let it take you away.
I saw this lineup at a nice theatre , the sound was stellar but the guy sitting next to me had
sinus problems , kept wheezing , sniffling . Talk about someone getting in the way of something
so amazing to listen to .

The first time I saw Pat Metheney was in 1987 (First Circle tour). I had never heard him prior to that show. I was blown away of course, but the real standout that night was Lyle Mays.
@@TheRobWay1 The First Circle tour was 1984 (I saw them in Tampa in November of that year). If I’m not mistaken, 1987 would have been Still Life Talking. Also a wonderful record and tour.

For me this is golden era Metheny-Mays/Group music. It's the period of Pat's career (Lyle's, too) that I enjoyed the most and I wish it had lasted longer. But as time went on, it evolved into something different, and it never captured my attention in the same way. The Way Up and Speaking Of Now were the albums that marked the fading of the legendary Pat Metheny Group, at least for me. While I practically wore out every Group album before those two, those two didn't get a lot of replays.
The Way Up is really cool too though. It’s a totally different vibe altogether. I definitely agree it doesn’t have the same kind of synth magic like Last Train Home or the tunes on Letter from Home.
@@Turboy65 My go-to PMG album is First Circle. Maybe it’s because the first time I heard them live (Tampa Theatre, November 1984) was on that tour. Transcendent.

Probably the peak of the Pat's PMG era. All of the PMG eras are great but this lineup (and this album 'Letter From Home') probably marks the zenith in which everything just came together.
