You, Bro, You. I'm talking to YOU. You got me back into my leather working hobby to start making slips for my knives. I'd forgotten how satisfying how this work is in all my busy life. But now at 70 and retiring soon, you sparked my imagination and reminded my how much I loved working with leather. Now I'm having a blast making these for all my Case and other traditional knives. I thank you for getting me back into this great hobby. You are my friend for this.
Oh man I love hearing this! Ppreciate the kind words and Keep on Keeping on bud!!
Brother, You are an original, genuine, artisan, and a true compadre in the leather working craft! Welcome aboard
Gunny! Grizzley Forge LLC.

Thanks 👊😎
This video is so relevant today just as much as it was a year ago. Leatherworking is something I would love to try. There is something nostalgic about trapper, whittler, or a Barlow that speaks "Gentlemen." I enjoyed this video.
Thank you!
Agree 100%. While you were talking, it occurred to me that the modern, one hand knives are handy, fast, and fairly safe with a lock. The traditional knives are just way more classy looking. A nice slip just makes it even better.
Amen
Yes sir brother!!!!! The one thing I never did was carry a knife in my back pocket I always thought you’d sit on it and it would also be uncomfortable……. I just always liked a slip it always brought another experience to carrying a traditional knife…….. I almost couldn’t carry a traditional if it wasn’t in that leather slip…….. I wouldn’t be half as excited pulling it out of my pocket and using it….. to me a slip and a knife is like peanut butter and jelly it has to be…….. thanks Richter I appreciate your insight brother….. have a fantastic weekend be safe out there😊
Peanut butter and jelly….good analogy buddy!
I tried leather and I realized that you and others are talented.😂 And modest.
You are the best man. The slip you made me for my Tactile Bexar is the best one I have.
Nice
I just discovered your channel and subscribed! We are very similar - I have Spyderco's, Benchmades, and Case. Like you said, the modern folders have their place but there is nothing like a Case! Keep up the great videos!
Love this! Thanks for the sub, man!
I just started using slips and appreciate the insight.
Thanks
Thus channel just keeps getting better. I highly recommend it to all. Well done brother.
Wow thanks for the support bud!
I don't carry anything in my front pockets except for change until I get home...I usually have a backpack wherever I go...I keep my wallet in my lower cargo pants pocket and have never used my rear pockets.
After I lost a few things because of holes in my pockets I stopped using them although a big leather case wouldn't slip out.
I usually carry my knives in outside the pocket leather containers that I put on my belt.
Knives, leather, tamales, brisket, AND... pearl snap shirts!
Represent!
Okay…okay…yes. Pearl snap shirts
I know what you mean, its what we grew up seeing and loving as our first knifes. Being in southern WV its what most of our old timers still carry. I love my spydercos and benchmades but will always love my traditionals. I'm gonna give this pocket slip making a go, you've convinced me.
Heck yeah. Go for it bud.
You left out one reason to carry a slip. The stitching! The straightness, evenness, and craftsmanship shows all the handmade love that went into making it. Durable aligned even stitches accent a smooth burnished edge. Haha. Just something a leather worker can appreciate. The joy of trusting a beautiful slip to protect our pocket treasures.
Well said
I'm the same way. I carry a modern knife with a clip, an old fashioned slip joint and a swiss army knife every day.
Real knife guy 👊
I know exactly what you mean. Traditional knives have soul. Modern knives don’t give me the same feeling when I have them. I started carrying slips only a couple of years ago, I will not go back to just dropping a knife bare into my pocket. Great video!
💯
Merica.
Fixin to make a slip for my new (actually old) trad folders
Sweet
Man I want to like slips so bad, as I’m a traditional knife guy. But I can’t get used to the bulkiness in my pocket. For now, I carry 3.75 inch folders in my watch pocket, but that’s the size limit. I’d love to carry my 4 -4.25 tappers, stockmans, etc. So I’ll try it again some time. I’m actually thinking of deepening my watch pockets by about an inch. To me that would be great. Cool vid dude
Thanks for the feedback!!
First time I saw a pocket slip, I didn't see the sense in them. Thought it was pretentious. My trusty rusty Sodbuster works its yella delrin hind end off and don't need that fancy pocket pouch protecting it. I enjoyed looking at y'all's knives though so I listened. Then I caught myself carrying one of my cheap knives out to dinner because I didn't want to rub keychain to pretty autumn bone or bocote slabs. It's sinking in. I reckon seeing your collection and your slips, it clicks now. Can't make the wife drive every time so I don't ike up my Tiner Patterners on the car keys. Better get me a slip. Thanks for sharing I like your video
Hey Lookie there…cool story. Thanks for watching and hearing me out
Whenever I get a new pair of pants, I spend a few minutes with a needle and some strong thread, and sew a "compartment"/sleeve, in the pocket lining.. My knives stay upright, and at exactly the right depth, for easy access..
2 minutes of time, and you've got the perfect (free), pocket carry, for your pride and joy,, easy as pie,
Fancy
John, I’m thinking about the same thing, but I was gonna lengthen my fifth pocket. If I take out the stitching on the bottom of the pocket, I can sew a felt pouch into the pocket for my knife. Hoping it works
3:36 “#1-I like knives” 😂
Good enough 🤙
Nice slip from GA, love the coffin and Jolly Roger.
That beaver slip is stunning.
I’ll take a look at the leather making kit because I have couple of pieces of scrap leather from strops, weightlifting and carpenter belt, shoes, etc. that I’ve saved
🤣 thanks
Yippee another rad video!!!
I like rad videos too!
Awesome video! Everything about this resonates with me 👍🏼
Thanks bud!
This man gets it. And I hate the certain TH-cam knife "experts" who say "Most Case, Rough Riders don't use premium steel...oh no!" ...or one popular, European fool, says only "country hillbillies carry Swiss Army, Case, or Great Eastern Cutlery knives". I SAY, " MIND YOUR BUSINESS, LET ME PAY FOR WHAT MAKES ME HAPPY"...Besides, it was good enough for DECADES , and for MILLIONS of Americans of all types, cultures, races, and regions...some of the old Case/ Barlow / "Toothpick" / Sow belly/ Trapper specimens of 80 years ago, STILL look brand new today!
Yessir!
I started harvesting leather from old couches and making my own knife slips. It's pretty easy and I think DIY gear is cool 😎
I’m right there with ya!
I have the same feelngs about carrying a traditional pocket knife as you and am torn, carrying a modern folder locking knife. Its just not the same. I have several older ones and I cannot get over the beauty they have.
Carry both!!
Just started carrying in a slip for all the reasons you went over. I love it plus it protects your pocket from clip wear and from developing holes from where the bolsters rub. I get what your saying about traditional knives. There's something about the process of using them that modern folders just can't duplicate. Yes they take longer to deploy but that is part of the charm.
You get it!! Thanks for watching Corey and for the feedback as well
Great video. It'd be cool to get a tool box tour sometime too!
Good idea 👍
@@richterknives I'm gonna do one eventually, backed up on knife videos right now lol
Hardest part of leather working for me is making straight lines, even with a ruler, lol.
Ive made some ok stuff tho. You just gotta keep at it. There are a lot of tools involved thats probably the toughest part. Finding out what you need to do what you want.
My advice, watch TH-cam leatherworkers. Thats where I learned everything I know so far, lol.
I think everyone who has ever done leather has struggled with cutting out exactly how you see it in your head. Better tools and practice help tremendously
Very informative, awesome video!
Thanks buddy!
Oddly enough, I use my leather pocket slip for my higher end pocket knives that have pocket clips on them to protect them in my pocket a little better. For instance I carry my Spyderco Valloton in a leather slip with the clip over in in my pocket.
Great idea
Nice great looking knives and very nice leather work! I've been thinking about getting some slips!!
Go for it!
Me too Mike. They look so nice
Awesome! I like slips and have made a couple of small coin slips. I'd like to get more into it soon. Great video 👍
Go for it bud! Heck yeah
Great video…I love a slip also
Thanks bud!
AMEN BRO....Traditional knives have soul, memories and emotions and really mean something....don't get me wrong I enjoy modern knives as well but u can't beat Traditional bone, wood and leather....hell maybe I'm just getting old but I guess I've always been old school !!!
Same here. I’m pretty old school
Awesome to hear your thoughts on this. Have a great weekend, buddy!
Thanks! You have a great weekend too!
I started making slips a few months ago and have now produced some sheaths for fixed blade knives. It becomes addictive. The trouble is, when I do do a really good job, I don't want to to sell it.😄
I hear ya bud!!! 😆
You can also strope with those leather slips. That's why I carry it.
True!
Dam,I'm drooling like I'm watching the waiter bringing my steak. 😋
🤣🤣
Nice video. Simply put : traditionals are "functional art". The flippers imo are utility. A slip keeps lint out of crevices, plus the reasons you mention.
Appreciate the feedback 👊
I've never really had that problem wearing Bible overalls I just put my knife in my Bible pocket and if I wear jeans I keep my knife in a sheath on my hip
There ya go!
You gotta be from Texas bud....tamales and smoked brisket...im from San Antonio myself
Yes! TEXAS to the bone…. Tamales and Smoked brisket are my jam! Lol
Made a slip out of duct tape and cloth lacrosse tape. Surprisingly it looks and works very well.
Edit-Love my slip joint.
Gotta do what ya gotta do!! 😎😎😎
I carry a Mini Griptillian next to my wallet in my right rear pocket or a classy traditional folder in a belt sheath just in front of my wallet I never carry in my watch pocket bc I often carry my Glock 42 in my front pocket and anything in the watch pocket restricts access to it
I never carry a new pocket knife in a pocket bc pocket lint contains crap that can scratch up the handles and bolsters
I may try carrying in an organizer sometime
The stuff you’re showing looks pretty good but I have the money to buy it I’m not gonna make it myself
Nice display Thanks for sharing it
Thanks for watching.
BTW, I consider my Buck 110 the best of both worlds, even though it is more of a belt knife.
I wish I could love the buck 110. Just too heavy for me and I hate stuff on my belt
@richterknives I get ya! I don't carry mine as much as I did a few years ago.
I use slips ONLY if the knife scales are expensive- pearl or abalone inlay/mircata/ or specially polished materials. For Slipjoints and Buck 110...I use outside leather pouches with belt loop...
Nothing wrong with that 👍
Hi brother. I need one of those.
Find me on Instagram at richter_knives. DM me and we can get ya hooked up 👍
Hey bud, one Tejano to another....how can I get a hold of a gec bull nose model 21 or 71 hopefully both...I've carried a case sodbuster forever but fell in love with the the fit and finish of the gec version...can't find them anywhere????
Get on GEC Facebook groups. Slipjoint groups as well.
Nice slips man? How does one get one of your slips? Do you offer those with the R on them for sale?
Instagram DM. I can make that one
I carry a pocket slip every day, I have a lanyard on mine and I loop it over my belt so I can’t lose it. I definitely want to learn how to make my own. What thickness of leather is best to use to make one?
Thanks for the video, I enjoy seeing the ones you make. Have a great weekend.
Anywhere from 5-8 oz works well.
Ok thanks. I am going to try and pick some up, and try making some.
I use 4oz for my slips
I'd like to get a couple that says biggie's knives but I don't have Instagram
My email is in my bio
Link me for the slip , please.
If you want a slip, DM me on Instagram at richter_knives. Thanks Mark.
a man who goes to sleep with an itchy butt wakes up with a stinky finger...
Okay. That’s kinda gross 🤣
doesn't make it not true ....@@richterknives
Brother... You don't need to make excuses for me why you love traditional knives.. They are 100% the greatest.. Yes, I love new ones like new case, new rosecraft, new miller bros, I definitely have fell in love with ESSE,USA ALL THE WAY... I love benchmade, civivi.. But old case, bucks, imperial, knives from solingen Germany... Lots and lots of makers... Don't ever apologize for the love of knives or how you carry them... What makes you happy is all, and ever, that matters... The internet is $HIT and will always be criminals and haters... Live your own life, and fu@k the rest... BTW... put that hat on like a man... Not a punk kid... Ilmfao 😅 like I said always gonna be haters 🙏👍✌️
Haha thanks. 🤣
