Hey Scotty! I'm Luis from Spain. There goes my question. I know a guy who sells a 1990 Celica 1.6 Sti which has 450.000kms. This guy has been the only owner of the car and has done all maintenance since he bought. It is really well conserved. Do you think it can be a good buy? Thanks a lot

Scotty you forgot to tell people to drive with their thumbs on top of the steering wheel and not tucked under the wheel. Airbags can break your fingers and wrists if you hold the steering wheel with your thumbs tucked under the wheel.

Hey I bought a Pontiac Firebird 1987 V6 with original race engine for 900$. Do you think that is a good deal. I just stumbled upon your channel and was wondering if u could tell me about my purchase? (The car doesn't register the gas put in the vehicle, what could be the problem) the Pontiac has a nice black blue matte color to it, should I resell it? (Help)

      @AlbertLara 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

Joel Rosario HAHHAHAAHA! Sometimes I feel like people who do good at Mario Kart drive better in real life.
Because in Mario Kart, you have to pay attention and proactively react to the curve of the road, other racers, bananas, turtle shells, and all the insanity that happens in the race.
Meanwhile people who are not good at Mario Kart, all they can do in real life is look straight and make sure to brake when they get too close to something.

...cars are coffins on wheels - though at night (especially dusk) in rural areas although no driveways random animals darting on to road - most people naturally react by sudden swerving which upsets the car control - then you get on the gravel on side of road and not too far from that is the obligatory tree and then the obligatory sudden impact and unfortunately but hopefully not the obligatory death. Dusk/night rural areas very dangerous time to speed.

I gotta go with Justin. Unfortunately, Scotty and I both drove fast when we were young. Scotty with purpose, including car selection, me because I was unhappy for the most part. I knew guys my age who didn't speed, they'd also had a happier life than mine.
That would be my point. I drove a Miata rental in their 2nd year. They were all automatic transmissions which took some of the fun away but I recall that with the Miata and also when I first began driving, I was more interested in driving well than fast. Seeing a beautiful day with the top down and trees overhead was more fun than speed.
I will equate driving fast with my drive from Boston to north of San Francisco to deliver a car. It was a Honda hatchback automatic transmission loaded with the owner's belongings and 2 drivers. We drove mostly at night to avoid traffic. We also had to avoid some weather, drove through some of it as well. We stopped for sleeping 3 times, we actually drove deep south as my co-driver wanted to visit a girl. Other than a hike that day and when we walked around Vegas, we drove.
Was that drive across country fun? I don't regret it but I don't feel like I saw the USA (I had been to San Fran on business several times before). Driving fast is kind of the same. Not much room for it in the Northeast, plenty of tickets waiting for your plate number and frankly, I don't want to hit anything that breathes. You're concentrated on driving (which is important) and you're ignoring the scenery. It's like working your whole life and never enjoying it.
Finally, most chicks don't like it when you drive fast. A little yes but all the time, definitely not.
The Fast and the Furious series made it look great, Detroit has sold the idea for years but if you need to drive fast, there is something that you need to learn about yourself. Sometimes it helps when you pay a pro to listen. Then get on with your life and do something good.

On most modern cars if you're going down hill the fuel injectors shut off for better gas mileage and the wheels turn the engine. If you put it in neutral and coast down hill the fuel injectors must be used to keep the engine idling, therefore you're actually using MORE gas. True story.

Best braking efficiency is when you brake in a straight line. Braking is corners can send the back end twisting round.

Anyway, he passed on this comment, from an experienced racer (when on the track)... "If you can see something ahead that's in the way, you're going to hit it. You may slow down and steer a bit to the left or right... but, you're still going to hit it".

    Ha!
My first car in college was a ‘69 Cougar...289? 302?
I really wanted that yellow 426 Hemi ‘68 Superbee but when my uncle floored it during a test drive he yelled, “You ain’t gettin’ this!”
65 years old today and your vid caused me to reminisce about all the cars I’ve owned. 32 in all from American muscle and luxury boats to UK (MG & Jensen-Healey,) Italian (Fiat 128 & 308 GTS,) Japanese (Nissan, Honda, Mitsubishi, Subaru and Suzuki,) Volvo, Mercedes, and my favorite drivers Porsche 914, 924, 944 Turbo, 911S, Carrera 4, 928.
The 924 sucked but every other Porsche was fun to drive and the most reliable of them all was the 914; and the 20 year old me drove the hell out of it. It wasn’t fast; a ‘70 vette would dust me off the line but give me a twisty road or even a city corner (not enough distance for the ‘vette to gain much advantage) and I felt like The Flash against the Hulk.
My last American was a ‘78 Monte Carlo SS and truthfully, all my cars from ‘63 to ‘78 were reliable and comfortable - meaning they were soft and ill-handling - but reliable.
    The least reliable were:
    2004 Volvo XC 70
    2002 Subaru Impreza WRX
    1974 Jensen-Healey
    1978 Ferrari 308 GTS
    196? MGA
    and the worst
    1974 Fiat 128.
    Thanks for the memories.

I live near a road that’s probably a mile long straight and has a 90 degree curve at the end with no signing or reflectors. At night it’s basically impossible to see it until your headlights reach, and if you’re going 100+mph you’re not making that turn once you see it. 10+ people have died over the years from that corner, with dozens of totaled cars and serious injuries. Don’t be one of them.

Well said, Scotty. During the 70's and 80's we found that planning and practice on race tracks to be way less challenging than SCCA National ProRally Series. You had a route book and a co-driver to read the route to you. You had to drive the roads as fast as you dared with NO KNOWLEDGE of what was in store for you on the route except for what was in the route book! It was even better if you could memorize that road because you could go faster if the rally reversed and went down the race stages again in the other direction!

I drove Fast. Great Advice Scotty. Most of the Time I was Solo. I didn't need nor want my Music Loud because I needed to hear my tires at her there Speeds when cornering Tires ( if your Engines Exhaust isn't too Loud ). Tires will begin to bowl or Squeal a bit before they break traction or slide on bare Asphalt with no sand or Travel residue on it. I used the Tire Howl /Squeal factor to determine how Fast maximum a particular corner could be taken. By listening carefully. I could Tell which n how many tires were Squealing this way too... I never pushed the car beyond 3 of 4 just barely beginning to Equal because that was verge of total traction loss n wipe out
Braking must be done smooth n slow motion not too abrupt n choppy. Your Circle Track n Road Course Drivers will tell you this neither Braking or Acceleration should be Abrupt but eased into is far better n practice practice practice

It's been a number of years since I last got to practice my heel and toe, along with apex cornering and trailing throttle braking going through high-speed turns. It does take total concentration to do it right and the radio does have to go off. I also always wear thin-frame wire sunglasses so that the frames don't block my peripheral vision and also wear thin Damascus leather driving gloves for a good feel on the wheel and the shifter.

In 2008, I bought 1970 Mercury Cougar 351c 4v Eliminator (unknown to me at purchase) that had complete delete all trim. The economic downturn had cut fuel prices by 1/2 in the San Fernando Valley. I found it on Cragslist in Norco CA for $1,600 -under a tarp. It was gold beige, vinyl top, Houndstooth interior, FMX 2.75 gearing, limited slip (shimmy, shimmy) fun and unassisted drum brakes all around... (special ordered not to stop when the wife was aboard and lots of golf tees in the trunk). 82K original miles and the engine and trans were original and never rebuilt. I had to replace a vacuum rubber tube for it to shift after bringing her back to life with marvel mystery oil and a tune up. The Cleveland 4 Barrel had a stock Motocraft carb in a fuel rich setting and only liked high test gas with additives from NAPA. On 87 octane it was doggy but did not ping getting around town. I sold it on eBay to a meth head woman in Florida who stole from her elderly mother to buy it. She took 9 months to send a transporter and stiffed me for $275 in storage fees. It ended up in Arizona. When her brother called me with the story, He wondered if it was my car. I hesitated... (How did he get my cell phone?) His sister had towed it to his shop two years earlier and likely never even saw the car in person. He completed a lien sale, replaced the carb and intake with a Holley and fixed the transmission leak and was raving about the car to me... he kept the centerlines on it and asked if I had the original magnum 500 wheels and I did. One of his buddies came got them. The end. I've learned a lot from your channel -biggest being buy only silicone wiper blades! Thanx Scotty Kilmer! p.s. I drive at 10 and 3 hand position for who knows why? I don't. Maybe it was the Skip Barber class I took at 18. Not sure.
