      What about installing a tank heater, to warm and circulate the coolant throughout the engine block and cooling system? Or, if it can be done safely, placing a small portable heater in the car's cabin overnight to help keep ice & snow from building-up on the roof & windows, and warm the interior?

      @@pancudowny Kenosha Wi here. Ya that's ok. Kind of a waste to heat the car interior for no reason. An electric heater might set it on fire, be real warm then. A lot of cars already have block warmers on them, just plug it in. :)

      Remote starter's are nice for getting into a warm car but they aren't very good for your engine. Idling upon startup for anything longer than a minute in freezing temperatures is very hard on modern engines. The best way way to warm them up is to get them on the road and apply some throttle. So dress warm and save your money for something other than a remote start system.

      Unless your got an older Jeep Wrangler that still has a good heater core. The defrosters on those babies are magic. Once the thermostat starts opening they blow heat and the fact that those older jeeps had flat windshields makes them quicker to defrost. Within minutes the packed ice starts melting away from the windshield.

      @@muumuumu This is another thing I see a lot in the winter months, and one that potentially causes more severe problems than leaving the blades on the windshield. You run the risk of the arms freezing in the maintenance position if you have a steady rain that turns into a flash freeze. If that happens, your defroster won't help at all - unlike if the blades freeze to the windshield.

    Don't gun it!!! It's okay to drive it conservatively until it reaches normal operating temperature but don't hop in and floor it. I personally don't warm my car up as modern cars really don't require a warm up period, I just give it a few seconds to build oil pressure and baby it until the temp gauge starts to climb and everything quites down.

    • @USAFTACP
      @USAFTACP 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      001 002 warming in the general sense is for carburated vehicles for the fuel air mixture rate. Modern cars automatically adjust fuel delivery on the fly, negating the need to warm up the engine.

    • @EricFortuneJr.
      @EricFortuneJr. 5 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      001 002 On some really cold mornings the engine oil is more viscous and doesn’t flow as good, it settles over night so it’s best not to floor it. It works best at operating temperature, notice how much quieter your engine runs after it’s warmed up good vs a really cold start. It’s fine to drive it cold as long as you don’t dog it out and this is assuming you’re using the correct viscosity, 5w20 0w20 5w30 etc...

    The straight water trick can be good for water pump or cooling system components can be good for troubleshooting but just that. I use straight water to do a ops/leak check after installation. Just remember to drain the water right away while it is still fairly warm and flows better. Replace with coolant after that and then do the air bleeding procedure. The disadvantage to the water is that it is clear so a leak might not be as easily detected. The Coolant even if dirty should have a contrasting color background to make leaks easier to detec.

      Same here. When I lived in Connecticut that’s what I did when it snowed. I since moved to North Carolina and it never snows here like it does in Connecticut, but it does get cold enough that the windshield does frost over and for that I just turn the car on and let it warm up and then turn on my defrost.

    Thanks Scotty, enjoy your advice and/or refresher. Living in Minnesota we know the trick of leaving wipers propped up, and batteries are only good for 2-3 years. Unsure if antifreeze technology has changed, but coming from a bygone era of engine heaters (usually frost plug or coolant heater) otherwise, you were putting a pan of hot coals under the oil pan.

    People would actually put boiling water on their frosted windshield? The wipers in the air is known at The Canadian Winter Salute.

    • @Billy123bobzzz
      @Billy123bobzzz 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, people have actually cracked windshields that way. It doesn't always happen so sometimes they do it a few times and get away with it only to break it unexpectedly at some other time

      About 60 years ago with me begging her not to, my mom poured HOT, not boiling water, on her windshield. It didn’t crack, but the water froze immediately, and then she had an even thicker layer of ice. That was near Houston, so it was just in the twenties. I learned about wipers in the air when I was a long haul truck driver. Still do it now on my car.

      That's why they invented WD40. Use it on the moving parts (NOT the blades!) BEFORE it gets cold.
      Actually, silicone WD40 is fine on blades, but wipe off the residue.

    What Scotty doesn't realize while he lives in warm Houston, Texas, is that many times people here in the north have their wipers on while shutting their cars off in the winter because of snow. Then when going to start the car the next day after a good freeze the wipers have no choice but to move whether the wipers are turned on or off. The best thing would be to remember to shut the wipers off before turning it off each time in the winter (my memory sucks, though).

    I see all of these articles saying you don’t need to warm up your car. They say you should just drive it easy until it is warmed up. That advice is completely ignoring that fact that your windows can fog up quickly when you are a half mile into your trip.

    • @logicalnerd1517
      @logicalnerd1517 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @wildbill23c
      @wildbill23c 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's fine just make sure you hit one of the morons that wrote the article since you can't see where the hell you are going when all the windows are fogged up or iced up. I don't care what they say, I have several high mileage vehicles that I warm up before I drive them, until they're buying my cars for me and paying repair bills they have no damn say in how I treat my vehicles and you can easily damage all sorts of stuff jumping in a cold vehicle and driving off like a bat out of hell as many people do...but since many never keep their car longer than a year or 2 anymore they'll never have any idea what the damage is by doing so.

    • @101Volts
