The Hyundai i20 has entered its third generation for the Indian car market. It is now available across three engine and gearbox options as well as eight colour options. The most eye catching detail of the new Hyundai i20 is its exterior design which has taken a sporty route and as a result you get this sharp looking hatchback.
Moving to the side, the new i20 might look compact, but it is actually 10mm longer than the Elite i20. Adding to the looks are these 16-inch diamond cut alloy wheels. There’s also a chrome beltline that goes all the way back to the C-Pillar and angles towards the roof. At the back there are Z-shaped tail lights that stand out and they are connected by an integrated chrome garnish. Rounding it off at the rear is this diffuser like element which also finished in gloss black and goes well with the sporty theme.
The Elite i20 was known for its well designed and spacious interiors and massive feature list. The new i20 further cements the fact that Hyundai knows how to make great interiors. Step in and you are welcomed by this sleek looking dash and you have this vent design running across the dash.
The i20 has grown by 10mm as compared to the Elite i20 in overall length (now standing in at 3995mm) and so has the wheelbase which now stands in at 2580mm. However, the biggest growth is the legroom and shoulder room which have gone up to 938mm and 1390mm, an increase of 88mm and 400mm respectively. Boot space too is up by a huge 26 litres with a total capacity of 311 litres.
The new i20 is loaded to the gills when you talk features. You get an electric sunroof, digital cluster with MID, wireless phone charging with cooling, air purifier, cooled glovebox and voice activated Blue Link. The party piece literally however is this 10.25-inch infotainment system that gets multiple connectivity options and is linked to a superb seven-speaker Bose system. On the safety front you get six airbags, vehicle stability management, ESC and hill assist control.
Engine and gearbox
This generation of the i20 gets three engines and a multitude of gearbox options to choose from. The standard option is a 1.2-litre petrol which can be had with a five-speed manual and in this combination produce 82bhp/114Nm while if you get it with the CVT, the engine produces 88bhp/114Nm. You can also have it with Hyundai’s 1.0-litre TGDi engine that produces 118bhp/172Nm and can be had with either a six-speed iMT or a seven-speed DCT. On the oil-burner front, you get the 1.5-litre four-cylinder diesel producing 99bhp and 240Nm. This engine is offered only with a six-speed manual
Kia Motors is working on a new compact SUV for the Indian market that will rival against the likes of the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza and the Hyundai Venue. The model, codenamed as the Sonet, will be third product to be launched by the brand in India after the Seltos and the Grand carnival.
To be based on same platform as the Hyundai Venue, the upcoming Sonet compact SUV from Kia Motors will be differentiated from Hyundai’s compact SUV with the help of the signature Kia design. The new model will be built at the company’s production facility in Anantapur, which has an annual capacity of 3 lakh units. To utilise this capacity, the company will need more mainstream products apart from the Seltos and Grand Carnival.
Inside, expect the Kia Sonet to come equipped with features similar to that of the Venue. The model is likely to receive smart connectivity via the UVO Connect technology and an eSIM for internet connectivity. Engine options will be carried over from the Hyundai Venue as well. On offer will be two petrol engines including the 1.2-litre Kappa unit and the 1.0-litre TGDi unit. The latter will be paired with a seven-speed DCT unit as an option. The model will also be available with a 1.4-litre CRDi diesel engine with a six speed manual transmission.
Just like the upcoming Seltos, the new Kia Sonet is expected to be priced aggressively, in the range of Rs 7-11 lakhs (ex-showroom). Once launched, the model will take on the Mahindra XUV300, Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Tata Nexon, Hyundai Venue and the Ford EcoSport.
Kia Sonet Price
Kia Sonet price starts at ₹ 6.79 Lakh and goes upto ₹ 13.25 Lakh. The price of Petrol version for Sonet ranges between ₹ 6.79 Lakh - ₹ 13.00 Lakh and the price of Diesel version for Sonet ranges between ₹ 8.35 Lakh - ₹ 13.25 Lakh.

Hey Rohit, I own an i20 & I sat in the Sonet as well as the i20 of 2020 in this video .. Sonet's interior space is genuinely lesser - there is phenomenal difference of legroom at the rear seats, plus actual width wise as well, Sonet is cramped in interiors .. ! I have personally noted this very evidently.
Also i20's N-line has paddle shifters, Auto-dimming IRVM, Cooled glove box, all 4 disc brakes, etc which I reckon are a clear miss in the petrol variants of Sonet.
No doubt Sonet is a delightful looking car from the outside.
But you see i20 finish and design language of interiors .. it is way above the Sonet (be it the AC vents or the steering or overall feel), despite HMIL sharing platofrms with either brands.
Also, there is a reason why i20 is priced on-road between 12 to 14 Lakhs .. because it is genuinely a premium hatchback, while vehicles like Nexon, Sonet, Brezza, etc are entry level compact SUVs.
There is a craze among us currently as ground clearance of these vehicles is more, and they have boxy design. Actual space inside is actually lesser. For example, i20 is longer than Nexon by a little margin.
Also Sonet just doesn't have a manual transmission option, after a 2-3 basic variants like HTE & HTK or so.
