I was shocked to see this at $118 at the LCBO. Wouldn't be surprised to see the entire Benromach line go way up in price soon similar to what happened to Glenfarclas.
I hear you. Scotch prices are insane. I paid $200 incl taxes for my beloved Lagavulin 16 on the weekend and the Ardbeg 19 Fifth Edition is also insane although I admit I bought it and it is fabulous. But come on, the price can’t be justified. Cheers.
I purchased the Glenfarclas 15 year in 2019 at the LCBO for under a $100. Was about to pick up a bottle today and was like nope! Ended up with the Benromach 15 year, and I’m happy with the decision!
Sounded excellent Rob! Thanks for sharing, hope to bring home a bottle soon. Cheers!
Cheers my friend.
The 10 and 15 are both amazing. I’m okay with the lower ABV when the whisky is great.
It's an interesting dram for sure. I also picked it as my #1 overall for new bottles I added to the cabinet in 2022 and it's still one of my top recommendations for folks looking for something a bit more complex than standard 12's or intro core range style bottles. I actually did a blind tasting of some of my personal fav 15's last night, and while the Benromach wasn't my top choice last night, it secured itself as a great "all rounder" profile. My line up last night was GlenAllachie 15, Glen Garioch 15 Sherry Cask, Balblair 15, Benromach 15 and Glen Scotia 15. They all brought something unique to the tasting and was splitting hairs on my scores. A great buy for sure. cheers.
I love these whiskies from Benromach! I prefer that 10 CS. Three 10,15, and CS are all first fill Bourbon and Sherry btw
It’s amazing stuff
Nice review, thanks Rob, and thanks to Jeremy for selecting it.👍
Benromach 15 is a fantastic whisky. When I first opened it it was very disappointing and non-expressive, and it took a few months (I left it alone after a few neck-pours) to open up, but once it did: wow. What I really enjoy is its combination of industrial and farmy notes, dunnage, dusty, and oily. It reminds me of my father's farm workshop and tractor shed--and no, that's not nostalgia per se, just quite distinctive aromatically. It's different from Springbank yet a little bit reminiscent... kind of. And that's good because distilleries should express themselves and not try to copy others. One of my favourite tasting notes for B15 was from someone on whiskybase who said it had all the subtlety of a brick, yet it's so intense/richly delicious.
A couple of years ago B15 was one of the best-priced 15s in my market (nz), ~62-6 euros equivalent (C$91?), but sadly today it has leapt (~30-2%) into the middle of the 15s price range (~82-6 euros/C$121?), which is a pity. The dollar difference doesn't look so big but the % shows it was a whack above general inflation. One reads how the rrp similarly rose in the uk but that B15 et al. were widely discounted back down again. No sign of that here.
Everyone wishes Benromach's core range wasn't 43% despite the 10 & 15 not lacking for flavour--I haven't tried the 21 but others have said it's not worth the price difference over the 15--and Benromach keep saying that the abv won't change, but their often-experimental Contrasts Series are all at 46% so people can choose/compare the abv aspect.
Very sadly the last Benromach Cask Strength available here was the 2009 ~3 years ago. No 2010 or 2012 imported, and still waiting to see if the 2013 might arrive.
Thats too bad. The benromach cask strength is a beauty. That being said, I find myself leaning toward 46% expressions these days.
Great review, couldn't agree more. Even the whisky snobs have to admit 43% is ok here :)
My first foray into Benromach was the 2008 10 year old CS many years ago so when I got the core 10 year old at 43% I was a little disappointed but boy that bottle ever grew on me. I got two of the contrast series ones, Peated smoke, and Sherry smoke right after the 10. The contrast series bottles are excellent and they haven't changed much even down to the last 1/4 left. I saw good reviews on the 15 and you also mentioned the 15 a few videos ago Rob so I went out and grabbed a bottle from the LCBO. I will be cracking it open in summer. I hope Benromach remains reasonably priced given how everything else keeps going up. Thanks for a timely review of the 15 Rob!
I highly recommend the air dried oak, the kiln dried oak and the bordeaux cask finsh from the contrast series - 46%, non chill filtered Benromach goodness with this slight smoke and the full body we all love about their core range,
@@mk.5706 Thanks MK. That sounds good. I will keep an eye out for those two in the contrast series.
Great review man, this Benromach 15 is just class in the glass. I keep meaning to review it and everytime I go back to my bottle it seems to get better. Haven't come across a bottle of Benromach that wasn't worth my time, even at 43%. The 10 and 15 will always be on my shelf. Thanks again for the review Rob. Cheers buddy.
Honestly fell in love with Benromach over the last few years. No looking back now.
Definitely a high quality edition from Benromach even at 43%. Easy sipper for sure.
100%
thanks Rob- another one for me to try!
Sounds great Rob. Going to need to grab a bottle of this. Checked the price out at the LCBO and the price seems pretty fair. Thanks for the recommendation. Cheers.
Ya definitely a solid price.
Nice one mate .
I hope to find a Benromach 15 soon Rob! Such high quality scotch! I am so eager to try the 15! I really appreciate your thoughts/opinions! Great video! Cheers!
Cheers Christine
Happy coincidence, I have a bottle of this currently on the way to me. Got it for a great price of 59€.
Enjoy it
Waiting for Arran remnant renegade review sir!
🙌🏻😁
👍👍
I'm a wee lad in scotch. The first few for me were lagavulin 8, loch lomond non age stated, then ardbeg 10 ( oh my the improvement) then arran 10 and craigailleche 13, deanston 12. There's a big range within the roughly similar price. 10 years ago we tasted through glenfiddich, johnny walker black, glenlivet and blue and a few other regular stuff and nothing said, this is great and i need to get into scotch. It was not interesting. Today the stuff raplhy got me on and now your finds that seem to line up. If only i can find some springbank, or glenallachie. I think i have a place but it's an hour away.
Glenallachie shouldn’t be too difficult.
I've seen two Benromach 15s at the LCBO. The one you have here in he white box 750mL for 119 and another one that's 148 at 700mL. What's the difference?
The 148 one isn’t at the lcbo anymore. It’s the old version.
They do need to bring the ABV up to at least 46% imo. Recently bought their 21 year old and it’s been pretty disappointing so far. Just too thin on the pallet!
This whisky matures in first fill bourbon and sherry casks, but its more sherry
That makes sense.
I get a mint note with the finish which I am not fond of. Am I the only one? I would rather pay the extra $10 for the Old Pulteney 15.
Very different profile on the pulteney
Here the 10 is $45. or then the 30y is $1100 usd.
Great prices.
Is $100 USD a fair price for this?
Ya not far off
Finally, a common man's dram . (Ed.)
Pisano funded is teetering with a bit of a racial claim there eh my friend.
@@WhiskyInThe6 (( a pal, a buddy, a compadre . . . I see things simpler ))
Lol
How would it fair against Bunnahabhain 12 ?
Think I prefer it to Bunna 12
@@WhiskyInThe6 same
@@WhiskyInThe6 from a value for money perspective definitely bunnahabhain 12.
