      The core range just needs a bit more excitement on the finish. It's still 85% of the way there for half the money. An easy recommendation.
      But the 02.22 cask strength? 😲 🤩 The higher abv gives it a much longer, ginger-spicy finish that really completes the picture. That finish is sensitive to water though. Best get used to sampling that one at full strength or darn near it. If it's a choice between Springbank 10 or Ardnamurchan AD/02.22 CS? Toss a coin.

    Filling the casks at a lower abv extracts more flavor from the cask. The standard at 63,5% is not based on any type of studies, it’s just industry standard. Studies find that filling the casks at about 55% actually is preferable if the goal is to maximize flavor from the wood.

    Ledaig 18 is definitely my got to alternative to the Springbank 18. I'm not a huge Springbank 10 fan and refuse to buy a 10YO for the kind of prices they are asking. Recently got a bottle of 2022 Springbank 15 and also have 4 or 5 of the older 12YO cask strengths.
    Kilkerran and Glen Scotia remain my go to SB alternative but they are also whiskies I enjoy in their own right.
    There simply is no alternative really. But until the craziness with Sprinbank stops, I'll just drink something else. I'll patiently wait until the market blows up and then buy all the Springbanks that the ornamental whisky buyers bought over the years with no intention of drinking. And if that never happens, well so be it.

    • @DavidUKesb
      @DavidUKesb ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Glen Scotia is as good as Springbank anyway. And all those hoarded Springbank bottles will have to hit the market at some point, which will see prices fall back to normal retail levels. Even now those who are selling the 10yo (in the UK at least) are only making a few pounds profit when auction charges are factored in.

    Great video.. My closest and best alternatives to Springbank are Kilkerran, Benromach, Glen Scotia and Craigellachie, in the exact order.. Ledaig although is a lot funkier/dirtier, it doesn't really fit into that Springbank profile, IMO, cos of its dominant smoke and it goes more with the likes of Ardbeg, Lagavulin profiles but its just very different..

    I just bought a bottle of Benromach 15 and it is appreciated, despite not knowing what Springbank even tastes like. I've been looking for something which approximates Highland Park's Einar, a travel special I fell for six years back. Those in the know have repeatedly pointed to Spingbank/Hazelburn/Longrow offerings as what I needed, but they are entirely unavailable. Kilkerran is not available in this market, either. Ledaig is nowhere to be seen. I have Glen Scotia 15, which is tasty, but not what I was looking for. I recently bought a bottle of the Craigallechie 13, and I'm just one dram in and still getting used to it. I'll make a point of sampling some Old Pultney and Kilchoman sometime soon. Thanks for the leads!

    I’m not sure that it’s a like for like comparison but, as an alternative, I think the Edradour Ballechin - particularly the Straight From The Cask bottlings (SFTC) - offer a great alternative, especially the Olorosso and Burgundy casks. Full of flavor, lots of funk, very interesting. They can perhaps be a little tricky to overcome if you’re new to whisky but, if you’ve already/are already drinking Springbank then it should be fine.

    No single malt will approach Springbank. _________ By now, your tastings/experiences are encyclopedic enough. ___ So, why not blend / vatt your own (they will bring one closer to your Summerbank thing/ madness) ?? Benromach as base + add Islay peat (many choices here avail on shelves) or less peat (Ledaig, Highland park, Talisker . . .) or more funk (sherried Pulteney, peated Benriach, Clynelish) . . . Familiar with this from the allocated Bourbons like Stagg, Elmer, Weller, Blanton's etc. There are so many great bottles that can replace any bottle that is hot and hard to find. Glen Scotia 15 for $80 even Campbeltown Loch $65 will do it for me. I recently bought a SB 10 as a Christmas gift for my bother for $99. It is a great Scotch and worth the $99 price tag.

    Interesting collection... Kilkerran and Glen Scotia are the closest IMO. Old Pultney is too salty for me, and I'm not a fan of any Kilchoman I've tried. Highland Park is VERY different and much more one dimensional (less complex) but delicious. The rest are delicious but depart more from Springbank. Personally, I love Craigelachie for the price. GlenAllachie 12 or 15 is another I'd recommend for this list. Also Ardnamurchan, which certainly has the complexity even without the higher age statements.

    I don't mind Benromach, and the 2010 Cask strength - mark my words - is gonna be a collectors item, but.. I do not understand all the talk about it being the "Springbank alternative". I tested them back to back with a bit of SP 10, and while I over all prefer Springbank, the Benromach is better than the SP10, but the Benromach is a much "soapier" taste and springbank has a great malty funkiness. In a way I understand the comparison, as they're both challenging, but they're just worlds apart. I think im alone in this assessment though.

    Most of your discussion is really about Longrow. I can't believe talking about Springbank as a heavy spirit and not talking about Oban. Heaviest spirit outside of Springbank, peat hidden underneath. If you want the closest to Springbank on Islay Bunna and the Laddie are closer, particularly Bunna which is closer still to the Tobermory you mentioned.
