    Thanks for that anecdote Ralfy.
I'm a relatively new anorac (started 2017, library exploded 2020). I'm still learning to both calibrate the quantity consumed for a review as well as to fight my own enthusiasm to try to reduce consumption. At this point, I'm taking the more blunt approach of simply reducing the number of days when I sit down with a couple of glasses as much for my health as also my pocketbook.
But more to your point, in the beginning, I felt that I needed to drink very nearly a full standard pour (1.5oz) to be able to review the dram well enough. A large part of that was the lack of experience, the lack of vocabulary, the lack of ability to instantly pinpoint the fleeting flavor notions passing over my tongue, even when I would spend the necessary moment to swish the whisky around before swallowing.
I've experienced enough now to do what I need to do with less than an ounce, starting only just this last week. You sharing your process is certainly giving me a broader picture and more to think about.
Cheers from way over in Berkeley, California.

I agree with you Ralph. I preferred the older branding. Can't see what the point was... Maybe the packaging is definitely cheaper than the old glossy box?......goodness knows. As for the quality, the peat smoke sherry is one of the best out there. Lovely stuff.

  • @DrumondArt

Every +46% ABV (mostly cask strength) I've tasted from Benromach were always masterpieces. I can only hope they raise their standard bottlings' ABV too, soon! Incredible quality all around!
EDIT: I find this 15y an incredible whisky. Could this be better @46%? Maybe, but don't let the ABV make you ignore this gem. Benromach is probably my favourite distillery out there right now.

Shorts and Flannel in November - must be laundry day. Benromach 15 is actually on the shelf of my go-to liquor superstore here in Denver suburbs. But every time I've gone to buy a bottle to try, I get lured by something in the fancy glass cabinet (last week, it was a bottle of Glenfarclas 25 - too rare and too much of a bargain to pass up). I'll get to the Benromach eventually.

As a guy who loves training/fitness I found myself sidetracked having developed an interest in single malt whisky. It seemed incompatible. I limit myself to 2 nights of drinking a week and when I drink I only drink two thumb sized servings at the most. Ti hear you speak about really tasting the whisky and drinking slow and less you encouraged me to not give up quite yet. Perhaps it can be compatible and honestly healthy for body and mind alike.

I've really enjoyed exploring Benromach's "Contrasts" bottlings, though they are a bit hard to come by depending on where you are. It's got a bit of everything: the regular 10 at cask strength, single casks in both exclusively sherry and exclusively bourbon casks, more heavily peated ones in exclusively bourbon or exclusively sherry casks, virgin oak casks, a triple distilled and a barley variety experiment. The only thing I'm still really curious about is what would happen if you put Benromach into a Madeira cask, or a Málaga cask; not sure if that would be a dream or a disaster!

Congrats on the OSWA's which I enjoyed on Saturday evening! Only issue was Pernod winning two awards and not having the decency to put someone up from Red Breast to accept it with good grace.
And while we are on Pernod/Chivas/Irish Distillers its not just them who smash our whisky through the chill filtration plant at ambient temperature and claim it to be Un chilfiltered. Looking forward to your take next year.

This is strange. Of the 50 or so bottles of single malt I’ve purchased in the last 4 years, the Benromach 15 was the only one that just hit me wrong from the start. Been back to it 10 or 12 times and still don’t enjoy it. Maybe a bad bottle?

Never bought this range, 43% for such a great malt being chill filtered is disgusting, and they should be ashamed for it. Sticked to the CS version or other malts, just give it 3 more % and switch the chill filter machine off, saves alot of energy costs... I mostly sip just 1, 2cl whisky glas for the whole evening, on rare occasions 2, so my staash gets bigger but im hardly getting rid of any bottles :D

    • @TasmaniaIsAHole
      @TasmaniaIsAHole ปีที่แล้ว +1

It might reach a point where running chill filtration is simply too expensive because of energy costs? More expensive than cutting the whisky down? It's an interesting development.

Malt mates, which Benromach is the best value, the 10, the 15 or the CS? The 15 is double the price of the 10, so I am thinking 10.

Yes, Ten is absolutely a belter even at 43% and CF. Brilliant stuff so yummy and with the price of £30+ its must have. Most of CS's are similar price as 15 with much higher abv and ncf so 15 is the last one for buy for me. 😁🥃🙋‍♂️

This is actually a question for anyone in here…
Per a ralfy video I watched long ago, I try to buy a bottle I’m otherwise unfamiliar with every month or two in addition to my usual suspects to broaden my horizons. I’m an Islay peat fan and bourbon secondarily. I am going to have the opportunity to buy a single cask bottling of either a 9 year old first full Sherry or 11 year old first full bourbon benromach. Any advice on which to lean towards? Based on this review it sounds like more confidence is had in the bourbon casks than their sherry ones 🤔

I have a question Ralfy - why whisky cannot mature in bottles, whereas it can in even most inactive casks? If this is oxygen influence, why it cannot mature in not perfectly closed bottle (fresh oxygen is avaiable in this case)

    • @thewhiskybothy

Benromach made three faults imho: 1. bottling at only 43%, 2. rebranding it into a nonpersonal blendish caracter, 3. using only first fill casks, overpovering the SPLENDID spirit they do. I am sure, Benromach could be one if the top notch brands, doing some very little homework and changes. Why only first fill casks??? Biggest mistake ever!
