  • In today's episode of The Average Garage I go through the method of replacing the oil pump gears in my Barra Engine. These are known to fail when hitting the limiter or under high boost applications due to the shock load, The originals are a powdered metal cast gear which disintegrate and cause catastrophic engine failure.

      Cheers. Has even more lights now haha. It's great when it's clean but hard to keep that area clean

    u should remove and check the pressure relief valve to make sure its free in its bore !!

      Good point. I will do that. Thanks

    Great job mate.
    I've watched quite a few Barra builds on YT and so many people do a shit job of the backing plate removal and fuck the screws up by not using the correct tool for the job...which is an impact driver.
    I've not seen anyone else use Loctite, or a torque wrench on reassembly either, even though it is best practice.
    Keep up the good work mate.

    Mostly those gears are supplied dry and checking the clearances is worthwhile. There has been cases where the tolerances were out and they destroyed engines. Check 'everything'!

      What tolerances do you recommend Mark? no one is willing to share.

    Drop the old gears from head height and you'll find out if they're factory or not hahah

    Hey mate do you think if i put in pump gears and modify the oil pump internal oil circuitry we still need a backing plate?

    • @T.A.G
      @T.A.G  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The backing plates are useful as the original ones have cracked for some people before. However. Make sure you check the clearance of the gears in the housing!

    I would have thought you new gear set and backing plate would have come with new hex head screws...

      The atomic kit does. The dominator kit doesnt at the moment but may moving forward. If you use the correct size screw driver bit you won't have any drama at all

      @@T.A.G yeah new screws / bolts would be nice as I've seen videos where people have had to drill these screws out ,even using correct bit. Thanks for the video .cheers

    Hey man does it matter what kind of grease you use?
    What kind have you used.

    • @T.A.G
      @T.A.G  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not really. Some use vasoline. Some use HTB. As long as it has a low temp range so it will thin out and mix with the engine oil when first started

      Do NOT use grease! It’s complete nonsense! You turn the pump just once… and the grease is pushed out.

    • @T.A.G
      @T.A.G  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What do you think oil does? 😂😂😂
      It's to create a seal between all the metal surfaces to avoid air locks aswell as lubrication.... 100% you can use grease

    • @mareksumguy1887
      @mareksumguy1887 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@T.A.G no… it’s based on a misunderstanding. You said the grease is there to prime the pump, i.e. to build pressure quicker upon startup. That’s complete nonsense. Like I said, the grease is pushed out of the pump after just one rotation of the pump. What grease did you use??… what anti-friction additives did it have in it?? This grease will be slung onto your bores and inhibit the new rings from wearing in properly. Think.
      The amount of oil that was on the gears was more than enough.
