John Silver: Now...you listen to me, James Hawkins. You got the makings of greatness in you, but you got to take the helm and chart your own course. Stick to it, no matter the squalls! And when the time comes you get the chance to really test the cut of your sails, and show what you're made of... well, I hope I'm there, catching some of the light coming off you that day.
The thing that hurts about this scene is that Jim thought he finally did something that no one could criticize, berate, or condescend him on; but then not only did he screw up again (in his mind), his actions actually got someone killed. Think about how crushing that must have been for him, to look at a situation he thinks he caused and to drown in his own self loathing over "another screw up". Which is why it's important that for once, someone was there to bring him back up and tell him that this mistake doesn't define him and that he can be something better, he can be something GREAT. Silver is there to tell him that it wasn't his screw up, it was his obstacle that he was going to overcome and become a legend.
Perfect description! This is one of my favorite Disney moments, and in my deepest moments of doubt and fear, I've always thought of his speech....Everyone, no matter what age, needs to be told that they can be something they're proud of, somebody inspiring and respected. And when they really do become someone they are proud of, they never forget those that had faith and love for them before their greatness.
Another one crying here. Reading what you've writted, i can suppose that probably, once you also needed that somebody said those words to you. And I think that's why your words are so heart touching
I listen to this whenever I feel down, remembering my father. This was his and my favourite movie when I was a kid. He sometimes said Silver's speech just to be all cheesy but I secretly took it super personal and always looked up to him. Now that he's gone and I cant go one day without thinking about him, I never forget, never forget that I have the makings of greatness in me. I hope wherever you are dad, I'll one day sail the stars and find you. You have my word ❤️

This makes me cry EVERYTIME! It's not only because of the soundtrack, the quality of Silver's speech or James breaking down and hugging Silver. The biggest reason is I can relate with it in almost every damn way. For most of my lifetime, my father has almost never been by my side and when he is so unsure of how to stand by my side because he lacks social skills, leading me to lack a proper father figure. Also father and my stepmother raised me in a way that if I did something wrong I'd be torn to shreds even if I wasn't the doer, making me relate with James of not wanting to screw up. Again, I relate with James and how he feels.
Last summer while taking care of a friend's horses, I was listening to this while filling water barrels. Cool evening, clear skies, and a full moon was due to rise over the mountains to the east. I kid you not, at _precisely_ 1:53 the moon emerged from beyond the mountain. I was frozen in place while the rest of the track played and the moon drifted into the sky. Hand on a stack of bibles, that's 100% true. I'll never forget that evening.
