Leavemea Lone funny how it's Alan Menken's idea to cut "If I never Knew You", saying how it's scarily too mature for the young audience (didn't test well with the demographic). I can envision that though. That scene had me bawling when I saw on TH-cam last year (finally!), but I probably wouldn't feel this much back in the day...or would I? :D

Can you make a movie like that or Sleeping Beauty which is like 70years old by now and its still one of the best all time, or did all the old writers die of age and the new gen just doesnt have it. :/

Why they don't like it, tho? It's a masterpiece!!! The music is a masterpiece, but the damn animation, the characters, the story, the message is a fucking masterpiece, how can anyone not love it?
I think people dislike Disney's accuracy in the story's cultural representation, or how they dealt with themes about racism, bigotry. Some also don't like how it wasn't a happy ending. Personally, I think this is a beautiful film mostly because of the artistic aspect of it.
@@shreemuthpericherla5407 That's exaggeration. Nobody has ever said Pocahontas led to the downfall of 2D animation when in fact it was one of the most artistically created and beautiful animated film's in the entire 90s era of Disney. It was less successful only because The Lion King was released a year before and was a bigger success than anyone ever imagined - Pocahontas couldn't live up to that level. Plenty of 2D successful 2D films were made after Pocahontas like Tarzan and Mulan, and the absolutely fantastic Prince Of Egypt (although that was DreamWorks). Pocahontas DEFINITELY wasn't the reason 2D animation died out, the real reason was the change in the audience and development of computer animated technology (the success of Toy Story hinted clearly that the coming decade was going to have more of these films, nothing to do with Pocahontas though)
He has always done masterpieces, but I totally agree. The Huchback and Pocahontas his best works among all his wonderful works. And I honestly think they both are the best Disney movies ever
Of all the songs in this movie, THIS is the best one IMO. No lyrics, nothing flashy. These 5 minutes tell the story so well of the starcrossed encounter of two people who ultimately had to say goodbye, but left each other all the stronger for having met. Simply beautiful.
Am I the only one that reenacts this entire ending scene (theme and all) as the pizza guy is leaving. I stand on the sidewalk and give them final epic farewell with the wave of my hand and a wave of leaves guides him on his way?
Even though Pocahontas wasn't historically accurate and In real life John smith was an asshole, this movie is still really beautiful and the ending always makes me cry
he didnt really have a huge connection with pocahantas in real life- and john rolf basically stole her when she was twelve from her tribe. pocahantas's movie is the least accurate thing ever
This, The King of Pride Rock, and the Finale to The Prince of Egypt, easily are the three most heart wrenching, beautifully written finales of all animated films.
I know this film's not perfect, but this is one of the best Disney endings EVER. Seriously, it's like the Anti-Ariel ending - Ariel just straight up drops her family, friends, her whole life, everything for this stupid bloke she hardly knows... but Pocahontas is mature enough to realise that she can't do that, however much she wants to be with John. I love that she makes that choice, and the music highlights the struggle she goes through as she makes it.
You know Ariel was manipulated into doing that, right? Besides, she was interested in the human world before she met eric. (as explained in part of your world) It's more like she left her family to become human. being with eric was just a nice bonus
The end of this is some of the most powerful music Menken has ever written. The buildup and force is incredible. I repeat the end over just hear it again. So I agree with the part from about 3:30 onward to 3:55 is fabulous build to the crescendo of the colors ending. It SO fits the movie at this point. It can make you7 see it vividly.
I cried my eyes out when pocahontas and john smith had to say goodbye to each other. my heart is still broken. i still cry everytime i watch this movie and the goodbye scene comes up.
As a child I wasn't a big fan of Pocahontas. To be honest, I think it was one of my least favourites. I rather watched Aladdin or Beauty and the Beast. As a child I loved only the ones with a "happy ending", the kind of endings where the prince ended up with the princess. I hated Pocahontas because of the goodbye. However as I've grown up I've seen the beauty in this movie that was invisible for my innocent soul. I've realised that the ending wasn't a goodbye but a letting go. There is a big difference as goodbye is an "I'll see you again when I'm ready to hold your hand and you're ready to hold mine" however a letting go is an "I'll miss your hand but I realized it was never mine to hold." I finally see the happy ending in this movie and that is that's it's always better to let go with a smile, than to hold on with tears.
Every time I see the part where she runs through the trees to wave goodbye, tears well up. I'll never understand people who don't like music like this. There is so much emotion in music, you just can't fight the feelings that they give you.
When I was younger I didn´t like this movie because she was the only one "princess" in Disney movies that didn´t end up with her love. Now I am older and Pocahontas is the most favourite movie for me because it shows us that life isn´t about happy endings... Everytime I cry even when I just imagine the part how she run through the trees.... AMAZING!!! ♥
+Katherine Yatsko At least the scores aren't. Maybe it's just the nostalgia talking, and the fact that we watched these films over and over as kids, but the instrumental soundtracks of the Disney Renaissance films were just so memorable and sweeping compared to those of their current films. The music that accompanies the Beast's transformation, Simba's ascent of Pride Rock, Pocahontas's farewell to John Smith, and Mulan's decision to cut her hair are so powerful. On the other hand, I couldn't identify an instrumental selection from "Frozen" if my life depended on it. Disney needs to get some strong composers working on their films again.

I cried like a bitch because it was so emotional, I was so happy for and proud of her. 👌❤
Me personally, I think its a tossup because while the original has superior animation/music, the sequel's story is just all around more interesting and develops the characters better. That it sticks to the historical material a little more closely doesn't hurt either. Would have been cool if they could take the elements from both and have combined them into one "great movie."
4:15 - 4:25 makes my whole heart move with the notes. the instrumental on what would be "you can own the earth and still, all you'll own is earth until" is so heavy, and moving through each note takes so much strength, if that makes any sense. Alan Menken is a genius composer and i love when he puts his heart out on his sleeve for moments like these
This part of the movie always made me cry, actually it still does even just listening to the theme and here I am an adult 28. I don't think we ever can grow out of our old Disney favorites or Disney movies period.
This is so so beautiful. Pocahontas is my favourite Disney movie. This scene is also so sad and the soundtrack is just stunning and so emotive. Cry every time
man from 3:40 on i started straight sobbing in my seat trying to keep quiet because i didnt expect that but i should have. disney always has the most beautiful soundtracks.
I don't care what Nostalgia Critic said about this movie. I love it, and still do to this day. The music was always one my favorite parts about the movie. Especially this track, so much emotion and power. Update years later: I am not even mad anymore. Frankly the amount of anger I had at the time makes me cringe thinking about it. I didn't even need to comment, but I did so I shall update. You don't gotta tell me not to be mad, I was just a angsty teen with anger problems that needed better control. Which I've managed to work on over the years. So please feel free to ignore this everyone, I know I'd like to. Yeesh I was so needlessly grouchy at that age.
At the end of the day all reviews are, are a person's thought about something. What one doesn't like one loves. There is nothing wrong with liking something one doesn't like or disliking what someone likes.
This music was in my head when I was saying my emotional goodbye to my close best friend who is Native American like Pocahontas. She stayed with me on holiday in England for two weeks which we had planned to do for years, we had the best time of our lives and felt strongly emotional when it was time for us to part ways at the airport where she was catching her flight. I said the words that Pocahontas says to John Smith "No matter what happens , I will always be with you forever."
This movie takes me back to when life was so happy, it has such a perfect narrative and message throughout and I remember sitting in front of the vhs as a kid, putting in all the old Disney classics and I would watch them for hours on end, some of the most precious moments and peaceful times that I will never forget- Just had to learn the violin part for this
The year now is 2020. The world is engulfed in a global pandemic. Amidst all this, my grandmother died today while I was so far away with no way to go back to her. Farewell wan
I love the crescendo that happens as Pocahontas is running through the woods to say goodbye to John. It's so powerful, and it really transports you as if you're in the movie yourself, experiencing what Pocahontas is feeling, or perhaps what John is feeling. A beautiful ending to a beautiful movie
I don't ever think I'll stop loving Pocahontas. Watching her as a kid and even now I never get tired of it. Disney has the ability to touch your heart with magic which I think they are losing in their most recent films. When I was little I never knew why I always teared up at the end. Its just that moment when she stands by her father and slowly starts to walk...then she runs and stops on the cliff and waves goodbye...even though sad it really is a beautiful moment.
I'm also part native american, I'm nor sure which tribe my paternal Grandpa is descended from, but my goodness the music in this movie is just very beautiful. ❤
My mind cannot comprehend the nostalgia and depth I feel every time I hear the songs and soundtracks of my childhood. We can only travel back in our hearts again and again.
I did not think this movie was the best in terms of the Renaissance era, but the score to the entire film is downright amazing. This track in particular gets me every time.
This makes me cry--with 3:07, how it starts building at 3:34, and especially the tune of Colors of the Wind at 3:55. I watched the movie for the first time recently and was wondering how everyone hated this--though it's incorrect, it has gorgeous music, along with a dramatic story and perfect animation.
I'm so grateful that I grew up in the 90s. I was 9 when I first watched Pocahontas in the theater. At 25 years old now, the ending still sends tingles down my spine and a slight teary eyes and I will not be afraid to admit I'm a guy. I will make sure my future childern get to enjoy all great films such as this from the golden era of disney.
So, during this Corona quarantine, I decided to go back to my childhood and rewatch some of the Disney movies. Man, some stuff really hit me, I mean, all of the movies, Pocahontas, Lion King, Tarzan, Prince of Egypt all have such a deeper meaning than I actually thought. I know they are cartoons, but adults should also watch them from time to time, just to help them remember they might not be walking the right path or have simply forgotten themselves.
Even this part of the movie made my mother, who finds it silly and childish that I still watch animated movies and get emotional, bawled like a baby. In fact, I caught her watching this on her own. HA.
I was singing along and started crying and I was like "what the fuck, why am I crying??" It's just so beautiful, the emotion in the songs, you can feel it
So does anyone else listen to this and envision a reunion instead of a farewell? I am very familiar with the original scene from the movie, but I always picture watching and waiting for that special someone. Several times you think they you see them or think they've come at last and get excited only to realize it's not them. And just as you finally turn away in disappointment, the special someone comes around the corner and spots you waiting for them. To be sure, they whistle a tune that is known only between the two of you and sure enough, you recognize it, turn, and realize they're finally here! All that time spent aching and longing to see them rises then falls as you realize you finally can. A smile slowly grows across your face as you feel yourself walking towards them and they walk towards you. By now, the music has reached its glorious end as that long awaited embrace is finally yours and the rest is history.
I had this movie at about 6 years old and I remember the ending made me very sad lol. After rewatching the movie I realized how good of a movie I had. Still very sad ending 15 years later❤
1:58 : that moment when nothing's left to delay the sorrow that is going to strike your heart at the thought the time has come to say goodbye. I'm heart-broken each time I listen to this beautiful track.
Love all of the Pocahontas soundtrack but this just tops it off beautifully! Absolutely brilliant at the end!!! Been listening to it over and over again.
The older you get the more you appreciate how beautiful this score was.

Same and it brings so many tears to my eyes.
The way the music builds up, it feels like two lovers running as the music gets faster and faster and they leap into each other's arms.
it does!
Oh my god now that you said that I realize is the other way around and it makes me sad
Admit it we all came for 3:40 xD
Lucy Price yes😅
That's my favorite part of the chorus.
Loll how did you know this was in my head all day at work. Goosebumps
Absolutely yes. Running through the forest to the cliff 😄
I want a full orchestrated version of paint with all the colors of the wind
One of the greatest musical endings ever.
This part of the movie always made me cry, actually it still does even just listening to the theme and here I am an adult 28. I don't think we ever can grow out of our old Disney favorites or Disney movies period.
Well said. Same here.:)
"Come with us."
"My place is here."
"Then, I'll stay with you."
"You need to go. No matter what happens, I'll always be with you."
THE NOSTALGIA.
I hope this is played at my own funeral.
+TheLastOfTheFinest80 I am so happy I am not the only one!
+TheLastOfTheFinest80 Me too
TheLastOfTheFinest80 This and Service and Sacrifice by Jeremy Zuckerman
I absolutely adore 3:33- 4:04. I say this because it sounds so beautiful, especially the part where all the strings play at a fast tempo.
This is so so beautiful. Pocahontas is my favourite Disney movie. This scene is also so sad and the soundtrack is just stunning and so emotive. Cry every time
pocahontas is my fav disney movie to
This is so beautiful. Pocahontas is my favourite Disney movie, for the songs, score and message of it. Love it.
man from 3:40 on i started straight sobbing in my seat trying to keep quiet because i didnt expect that but i should have. disney always has the most beautiful soundtracks.
He's a critic, he has an opinion, you have an opinion. And the cycle repeats.
It's been 4 years, why assume I think the same? I can see the flaws nowadays, BELIEVE ME.
Hey you don't have to think this movie is terrible just because he said so, So dw ^^
That guy has hated on almost every film we grew up on, things like the Star Wars Prequels etcetera. Let that dog bark. XD
Happy birthday Alan Menken. Thank you for the incredible music you've done. This piece alone is one of the best music in cinema history. No words.
This movie takes me back to when life was so happy, it has such a perfect narrative and message throughout and I remember sitting in front of the vhs as a kid, putting in all the old Disney classics and I would watch them for hours on end, some of the most precious moments and peaceful times that I will never forget- Just had to learn the violin part for this
One of the best instrumentals from a Disney song :)
This is what new Disney movies lack. An OUTSTANDING SCORE!!!
This has to be the better Disney movie ending ever. And maybe the best movie one, for me. You just end the movie in tears and totally emotional.
I can't put my words in order to describe how magical and loved my soul feels when I listen to this.
This music is so beautiful... The end of Pocahontas always makes me cry, though I never cry watching movies! My favorite Disney!
This theme encompasses all the feelings of love found, love had, and love lost.
Simply gorgeous.
There's nothing quite like the end of a classic Disney movie :)
4:15
You can own the Earth and still, all you own is Earth until
You can paint with all the colors of the wind 🍃🍂❤
Im apache I know the cartoon is not historically accurate but yeah it's a truly a gem 💎
It was beautiful
I'm also part native american, I'm nor sure which tribe my paternal Grandpa is descended from, but my goodness the music in this movie is just very beautiful. ❤
My mind cannot comprehend the nostalgia and depth I feel every time I hear the songs and soundtracks of my childhood. We can only travel back in our hearts again and again.
I just came from Tarzan soundtrack. That one hit my soul
May God bless the artistic, creative soul that is Alan Irwin Menken.
I did not think this movie was the best in terms of the Renaissance era, but the score to the entire film is downright amazing. This track in particular gets me every time.
Oh Menken. You musical god, you.
-Sheds a tear-
the chorus is the best
We need another story with a message that we may look different on the outside, but our bond is more strong than we realize. We’re not so different.
One of the most beautiful pieces I have ever heard.
Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz together=pure beauty
this is only Alan Menken!!
but they worked together on this movie, I was talking about the entire movie
agreed.. and tbh, I prefered the Menken-Schwartz duo way more than the Menken-Ashman duo...
amen to that XD
This makes me cry--with 3:07, how it starts building at 3:34, and especially the tune of Colors of the Wind at 3:55. I watched the movie for the first time recently and was wondering how everyone hated this--though it's incorrect, it has gorgeous music, along with a dramatic story and perfect animation.
The final part is the definition of beauty
Simply captivating ! I'm 27 and still love Disney movies and music. Guess the classics of childhood always stay with you.
Aaah. I remember the cassette tape we had for this!
Goosebumps, this soundtrack always gives me goosebumps, it's so good and I love it
I love how it just transitions from If I Never Knew You to Colors of the Wind right at the end there so beautifully.
One song the first time I heard it I never forgot it, even as decades go by. It's crazy. Forever an amazing song.
Love falling to sleep listening to these disney instrumental songs on my ipod. So beautiful. :)
This is so beautiful. I almost cry every time I hear the ending. Alan Menken is a true genius
My favourite part is 3:56 onwards. Wow. Just WOW.
If you've seen World of Color at California Adventures, this part hits you on a whole new level!!! If you haven't, I suggest you do!!! :)
the epicness, it makes my heart beat so fast :3 ..... so beautiful. the kiss scene is also amacing XD
I always get chills at around 3:30... I grew up with this movie and it will always be my favorite :)
So good it really picks up and becomes so dramatic and amazing!
Goosebumps, every time. man, from 1989 to 2003, Disney's soundtracks were just the best
I got chills!! This is so beautiful :'D.
I had this movie at about 6 years old and I remember the ending made me very sad lol. After rewatching the movie I realized how good of a movie I had. Still very sad ending 15 years later❤
I'm not CRYING YOU ARE!! *sobbing in the corner* God I haven't watched this movie in years but I can still see everything as the song plays. AAUUUGHHH
It's the music that really sold this movie.
Saw it in the theater with my father back in '95 and at nearly 30 it's still embedded in my soul.❤️
My favourite Disney princess 💕 This song is amazing and as many of you already said, the more you grow up, the more you appreciate it.
1:58 : that moment when nothing's left to delay the sorrow that is going to strike your heart at the thought the time has come to say goodbye. I'm heart-broken each time I listen to this beautiful track.
This beautiful comment added another layer of sorrow and depth.
They seriously did an amazing work with this music - how it perfectly describes this bittersweet ending with such big power.
I love how they used all the songs from the movie and blended them together
Love all of the Pocahontas soundtrack but this just tops it off beautifully! Absolutely brilliant at the end!!! Been listening to it over and over again.
I’m a guy but I love Pocahontas!
Nothing wrong with that
Who said it was a movie for girls?
You are allowed to love what ever you want.
This destroys my heart every time
One of the best features about Pocahontas is it's soundtrack. The music from this animation always sent chills down my spine :)
Alan Menken outside himself with this score. This song is so beautiful.
