I use color swatches from the paint store. I use them to try and mix the exact color (or close to that color), and picking 3-5 colors to use as my colors in a painting.
Dear Laura - Thank you thank you! I've taken several of your classes, all contributing to my ongoing journey of exploring and making art. Not only presented beautifully, each class is so richly filled with clear and practical information, along with both inspiration and encouragement. And then today I discover this lovely new (free!) learning opportunity in my inbox..... Your generous offerings make a difference in our world! Again, my appreciation and gratitude.
Thank you so much Ellen! What a lovely comment to read. I'm glad you enjoy the classes and the freebies. It's lovely to be able to share something like this to encourage more creativity in the world.
I just did the color exercises with a couple of clothing catalogs and a glance around my home-so revealing! Thanks for these effective exercises, Laura. Amazing the way it’s easier to search for colors than to simply identify a palette that’s true to you.
I'm a textile artist and I love your courses and shorter classes. Enjoying the quick exercises for starting new work. Just the inspiration that I need!
I know this is from a month ago, but that seems so interesting! What exactly do you get to do? What is the process for creating g a new textile design? Do you get free reign or do you get a "theme" given to you and then go from there?
Having listened to the podcasts when you were moving & seeing brief photos it's lovely to see some of your home, now you are all settled in. I adore the lab peeping through the door. I'm very drawn to nature's palette & I love how you have extended your garden with indoor plants. I used to have a lot until I got my current cat, but most are gone now as they were toxic for her. 😊🌿😊🇬🇧
Thank you, I feel the same - it’s lovely to get a peek at where someone you follow lives! This home is everything I hoped for and more. We’re still making changes, but it’s a real homey and nature filled home which I love ❤️
aww I know, when I watched the video back I realised how much he wanted to come in. He's unfortunately no longer with us 😭 but he was very much an inside and thoroughly pampered pooch when he was alive. He's crossed the rainbow bridge now.
@@LauraHornArt ohhh ? is really a huge pain to feel after a dog. i know it too well, after 2 dogs of mine died of old age.. after that it took me more then 7-8 months to recover..the only thing that helped is knowing that they were loved and we had a great life with them and thanks to them.. there is nothing like dogs..
Has anyone mentioned the Australian lady Sarah Renae Clark who has 2 boxes each filled with cards showing hundreds of colour combinations? On one side of each card she puts 5 colour swatches and a photograph of objects using those colours and on the back of the card she shows light, medium and dark of each colour. I love looking through them seeking colour inspiration. You can watch people unboxing the cards on TH-cam.
What a lovely, gentle exercise. It's galloping towards 11pm here in NSW so I'll take note for another day. Thanks for taking the time to create this mini series ❤
This is exactly where I needed to start..simple yet effective 😮…thanku so much.. I love the colours in your outfit and that is giving me inspiration..❤
@@LauraHornArt - I would love to subscribe to Flow and see what its like, but I think I read that they are no longer printing it in English?? I live in the States...
Laura I am not a magazine type person so this is how I solved this for me: By nature I enjoy card making so I after purchasing lovely colored card stock I created color swatches of the card stock in color recipes that were provided by the company. ( Paper Trey Ink has a lot of them on their blog in case you want to check them out. ) I also found out about the color cube collection of color palettes for inspiration, so for me those two resources help me. I use those color palettes to match with all my supplies to create seamless transitions of mediums in my card making, journal, and painting.
I love your process! That sounds so simple and organised, and I love how you matched all of your swatches to your mediums. Simply brilliant! 😊✨ Thank you for sharing!
Great idea to do paint tests beside the colour swatches. I would feel the need to have a 'test' paper (slop sheet) at the side to first experiment with the tube hues.
I went out and bought this colourful magazine I’ve never bought before (Uppercase) and I have to say the exercise of going through the magazine and cutting out the colours and textures that spoke to me was the best exercise I’ve done to find “my colours” since I started my art journey 6 years ago! I love colour so much so it’s really hard for me to narrow it down…so this really really helped!! It’s even better than buying collage papers (which I have a stack of too)! I even brought out a flat basket to keep my cut outs in and subscribed to the magazine! What a great first step!! Thank you!!
Laura talking about colour palettes - I love the tones you choose in your clothes. Also, I live in NSW can I ask how you order your Flow magazines? I love watching you express yourself through your art and you are very relaxing to listen to so thanks for all your great videos 🌺
Thank you! Glad you enjoy the video and the clothing choices!! Unfortunately, Flow is no longer available to order in Australia. A while ago the English print edition was discontinued. Very sad as it is my favourite magazine. I hope it returns downunder one day.
New ideas : I have never thought about cutting plain pieces of paper for collage, always searching for the ones with a kind of pattern, How tight my way of thinking was ....also the palette was chosen based on common suggestions (primaries, cool, warm), nothing on my personal taste. The third new point for me is the approach of looking around, also through the garden. This video was a Joy for the eyes and very inspiring. As an animal lover, I also enjoyed watching your dog wanting to be inside with you. Thank you very much!
Loving this, what a lovely relaxing way to pass a couple of hours whilst learning more about yourself and how it can reflect in your artwork. Thank you so much for sharing x
Here in California the pink flowers bloom late summer early fall...which must be where you are now. But we call them Naked Ladies or Amaryllis. Thanks for this series!
Ive just subscribed. I must say i love how you approach your swatches and colours. Those lillies are also called Easter Lillies and are wonderful plants. Enjoying this series
I rally adore both the way you show your work and how you do it. I am watching you being after all art schooles I have finished AND it is a first time I feel like being ENOUGH. I feel so inspired and relaxed in one time:D. I am looking forward what is going to be next!
3:40 A certain furry person behind you is wondering who you’re talking to & why you’re not snuggling with them lol. 11:02 Good to see they made it inside to keep you company 🤗🐶
Next question - would you mind telling me the exact name of the glue you used and is it suitable for gluing all types of paper to a painting? I don't know much about mixed mediums yet as I only have used watercolours up to now and I am just a beginner. Thanks very much 🌺
The colours I use in the two spreads are undersea green, goethite, payne's grey and napthamide maroon. These are all Daniel Smith watercolours, and I also use some Daler Rowney FW white acrylic ink.
I am cracking up laughing, I have a friend that does a lot of collage and uses a lot of books. The lady behind the counter was mortified when she told her what she did with them and has told the volunteers' not to sell book to her. Can you tell that I am from a stall town?

Sweet little doggie outside! Love you yard. This looks like a great challenge! Thank you!

Wow, thank you! That’s so lovely 🥰
What a brilliant inspiring tutorial. Thank you so much
I find I’m drawn to certain colours depending on my mood or the time of year. Even the weather!
Oh yes, me too, it changes quite a bit, although there are some colour palettes that I always come back to!

I thought the same thing 😂 the doggie is like “hey what the heck let me in!!”
Found it interesting that the green palette you choose looks like it matches your blouse.
This happens all the time for me. I often paint in the same colour palette as the clothes I am wearing. It's my colour mood for the day!
Great video!!!!!!!!!
so interresting!

LOVED THIS, GREAT IDEA TO USE A JNL FOR IT so obvious, why didnt i think of it.....;):):):):)

Gorgeous ideas; careful with Lillys or any family member very toxic to animals.
