I'm sooooo glad you showed us many overall views of your studio so we could get a really good look at the entire space... many studio tours just don't do that, they show you bits and pieces of how they store their supplies without actually letting you see how the different areas and spaces work together or relate to each other as a whole. Good job
Thanks so much, Magdalena! I'm glad you enjoyed getting to see all of my studio. I've since moved it into another room in our home and will eventually do another tour of my new space, too.
The plants add so much life and beauty to your space, and I’m glad to see that Claire has a wonderful space of our own in the warm sun light close to you
Thanks so much! I have since moved my studio and am squeezing in more and more plants. And both my dogs and my cat are enjoying the space, too! Once I get a few more projects done here I'll share a full tour of my new space!
Thanks for the tour! My studio, such as it is, sits in a north bay window of our dining room. I work on a gate leg table that can be partially cleared and folded when we have company. The rest of my things take up part of the buffet, a bookcase, a night stand, and one shelf of the hall closet. And a re-purposed wooden sewing caddy on legs that belonged to my mother-in-law. What I wouldn't give for a whole room!
I love the tour. As you were speaking about moving things around, I thought that sounds like fun, and then you said the same thing! You've done a wonderful job maximizing your space! Clara looks so happy on her bed!
Thank you, Dana! It IS fun to move things around. Clara's a good studio companion. It took many months to get her to overcome her fear of the stairs and join me up in the studio. Now she comes right up.
Love love your studio esp the soft natural light. Thank you for showing us around. I’m at the proverbial dining room table but since I live alone I can leave everything I’m working on right there. Supplies are in the lower open shelves of two bookcases. The stash of old used books and rarely used supplies are in 1/2 of a hall closet. Papers stamps ephemera live in 4-5 large flat 12x12 plastic boxes on the floor in a corner of the dining room. It sounds a whole lot more organized than it is. Constant piles on piles hiding favorite tools or pens obscure the work table. I sort and purge in December so people can eat holiday dinner there, but otherwise it is an annoyance. Watching you organize your watercolors the other day inspired me to try to make tidying my space a fun regular practice. Clara is a sweetheart❤
Hi, Karen! Thanks for sharing about your space. I've heard other artists who live alone describe their whole homes as their studios! I love that idea. I always find that cleaning and organizing my work space is energizing and I am NOT generally a fan of cleaning and organizing! Haha.
I have that copy of "In Her Studio!" Really enjoyed this video, and loved Clara's background snores! I, too, haven't yet started a sketchbook - though I have one. It's good to know you finally started. I moved my studio a few months ago into the main room of my 2-room cabin. Before I moved here I often said I want to live in an art studio...so now I do. Fall was busy with garden harvest and preparing for winter, painting Christmas cards, etc. so I am looking forward to changing around my storage (all thrifted too! Yes, challenging!) now that I've been working in it and gave a better sense of flow. You may have a small space, but this iteration looks good for the usages you describe! Thanks for the inspo, and have a joy-filled and prosperous 2024!
@AnneButera I saw that! It's lovely here. I will also send some videos of the beautiful scenery from the trail (former railroad track) that runs for many many miles nirth and south of here. My neighbour is thinking of getting a drone, so hopefully we'll get some overhead footage too! We are right at the base of a "mountain", which here in Ontario is a mere hill 😊, but it's all wooded, and along the trail close by is a lake and beautiful marshes. I dreamed of living in the country while working for many years in the city, so I am very content. Lots of folks think living without running water or an indoor toilet is a challenge, but I'm totally fine with it. First time I visited my Norwegian grandparents they didn't have an indoor toilet, and when attending school there a few decades ago my best friend didn't have an indoor toilet either!
Thank you so much, Ruth. Hooray for planning your space! I've since moved my studio and am working on planning and arranging it. You can see an earlier in-progress version here: www.mygiantstrawberry.com/blog/new-studio-progress (that post also shares some of my favorite resources for studio inspiration!). My new doors to the garden just got installed and I'm looking forward to getting settled back in. I'll be sharing another tour once I have. Thanks again.
I love your artwork and beautiful studio space and I love how you celebrate it it's loved and cherished like it should be my little desk is in my bedroom I have managed very well doing all my artwork there I've got a good body of artwork ready for maybe etsy shop but haven't done it yet 😊❤haven't
Hi, Deborah! Thanks for your kind words! I'm so happy to know you're creating a body of work and that you're finding joy in the process at your little art desk. Enjoying the process is the most important thing. When you're ready to set up your own shop, you'll get there! Wishing you all the best!
Thank you soooo much for this ❤, you gave me so many idea's on how to store as I also need to see what I have 😅. A friend gave me an old organiser on wheels from her shed, Just cleaned it up and now know what to put in it 👍. Your space is beautiful and I was sick of seeing work areas not so realistic ❤🇦🇺
I'm so glad I gave you some ideas to use in your space. How fun to repurpose a piece of furniture. I moved my studio this past summer and am still putting the finishing touches on the space. But it's all a process and that's part of the fun of it!
Thanks for the ideas! I'm not in that room anymore and am working on a new studio space. Still have some projects to do to "finish" it, but I'm loving it so far. I'll be sharing a complete tour sometime soon.
It was lovely to walk through your studio with you. I loved seeing your work displayed. I have put up a few of my pieces and it brings me joy. Hearing you have changed things around a few time was encouraging. It depends on what I am working on and how well I can make my studio flow with me. I have changed it around a number of times too. With winter climates - we need our light! The plants will still thrive as we share it. :D Greetings from Alaska.
Thank you, Gayle! Perhaps some day I'll have a studio that's arranged "perfectly" but I'm guessing I'll probably still want to rearrange things from time to time! And yes, I can imagine up in Alaska you crave light in the winter even more than I do here in Wisconsin!
Hi, you said your drawers in your alex unit from ikea are bowing. This happens more often than you think. You have to unscrew the two screws in the drawers then pull the drawers out and put glue in the slot and readjust the bottom of the drawer back into the slot. Let the glue dry. You can even use kids elmer glue. That should solve your problem, i had this problem too
Hi, Carol. Yes, I did that with the drawers a few years ago, but the glue did not hold. I used wood glue and let everything completely dry. Perhaps I didn't use enough glue or maybe I just fill the drawers too full!
what a beautiful room! very inspiring to watch! i can't believe how many functions you use it for! your art of nature also very lovely! thank you for sharing!!
What a wonderful space. I have a small space that I share with the dinning room table. Although it’s not the dinning room we eat our breakfast here and special dinners like Thanksgiving. My space is the perimeter of the room that is mostly open to the entry way, Kitchen and living room. When my sons had to move home I gave up a bedroom and dinning room so they had bedrooms. But I have made it work even though it’s cramped and cluttered. I would like to change things but can’t decide what to do. I dream of getting my spaces back and not cramming everything into this small space. Your space looks amazing. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you so much, Aleta! Every artist makes do with what we have (and I think we also grow to fit our space). Someday you will have more room. I imagine creating in your "cramped and cluttered" space is making you more efficient.
I loved your studio tour Anne! Creativity breeds creativity and who wouldn't be creative by so many lovely arty things? My 'creative space' is a dumping ground presently so I take myself off to the dining room table when I want to create - away from all the mess! Hope you are having a lovely week! 😊
I just discovered your channel and I am so pleased I did! I am in the process of unpacking, purging and organizing my studio after moving from San Diego to Prescott, AZ. It's taking me forever! I just want to make art! Your studio tour has really motivated me to keep going. I got so many new ideas. Your aesthetic is so similar to mine. I also prefer using old and repursosed furniture rather than new. I also love paining my pieces. So many studios look all the same. Bright white! (I have also purchased some smaller storage pieces from IKEA.) It is all so lovely. ❤
Thanks so much for sharing, Francie! And for watching. I know just how you feel about just wanting to paint. When I packed up my studio to move it from upstairs to downstairs (and then during construction), all I wanted to do was paint -- and I couldn't. Hooray for new creative spaces! I hope yours turns out just the way you like!
Very fun tour! Thanks for sharing, Anne. I love how you surround yourself with color, plants, your art and display your collected items. I think rearranging often is important to keep ideas and inspiration flowing. I also love the angles and alcoves in your space which create interesting nooks. Have you watched the "Home Edit" show on Netflix? They organize and arrange items in rainbow order which is something I have started doing and realized, that's how I choose things -- by color!
Thank you, Karen! I agree. Your mentioning arranging things by color makes me think about the trend of organizing books like that. As a former librarian and someone who owns a LOT of books that makes me cringe! Which also makes me laugh. But yes, other than books, I do choose things by color, too. :)
Thank you so much for this inspirational piece. I am currently downsizing into approximately this size room with the same window arrangement. My current space is significantly larger, and so I will have to leave a lot in storage. I like how you have multitasked many areas and how you display your art. Kudos to You!!
Thank you, Susie! Space is always a big consideration and downsizing can be hard when we have lots of stuff we need for our creative work. Have fun with your studio move. I think cultivating our creative spaces is a creative act in and of itself!
Thank you for sharing- this was so much fun to see your beautiful studio space! Can I ask where you found those maple(?) frames for your gorgeous flower paintings?
Thank you, Tara! So glad you enjoyed it. I got the frames online from Art to Frames www.arttoframe.com/ You can order whatever size you need and also buy custom mats, too.
Thanks so much for the suggestion. Since this video I've moved my studio and now my space opens into my garden with sliding doors. It's so much brighter! I'll share a new tour soon.
Amazing. I am just in the process of giving up my rented studio space and move my stuff back home. I won't have a dedicated room so it will be a challenge to fit all my stuff but maybe I will be able to create more since I won't have to work almost the entire month just to cover the rent.
Thank you, Meda! What a beautiful way to look at the new constraints of your creative space. We're always balancing and juggling and there are always plusses and minuses.
I really like this. I am browsing other artists and studios. I am exploring the idea of drawing sketching and painting. I definitely will get a type writer. I love it typewriter and so many other wants are on my list since I got back to journaling as well
Thank you so much! I do hope you play with some drawing and sketching and get yourself a typewriter. My husband found this one for me on ebay and I love it. My space has evolved so much over the years and cultivating it is a creative endeavor, too. Have fun and enjoy the process!
Wonderful Art and great video - thank you!
So glad you enjoyed it!
Interesting. Natural light is so important. I love rooms with more than 1 window aswell. So important to have a creative space
You're so right! My new studio has even more natural light (and a view of my garden) which I love!
