Being a teenager in the 80/s (and not a true basketball fan), we all became fans due to the Bird - Magic rivalry. We all loved them both! I'm from the northeast, so I followed Larry more than Magic. The other night, my husband was getting ready to go to bed, and the Lakers game was on (he was a huge Lakers fan growing up). It was the Playoffs. I stopped watching basketball after the Dream Team because I was too busy and tired as I was raising children. WOW, what an awakening for how the game has changed to a bunch of overpaid babies. We only watched for about 15 minutes and couldn't take it anymore. These spoiled and overpaid players today wouldn't have stood a chance against the players of the 80s and 90s. The last time I saw a more exciting game was when my son played in junior high school in 2005. The game today is sad and pathetic. NONE of these players would stand a chance against the men that paved the road for them decades ago. They are a spoiled generation and not really that talented - ESPECIALLY LaBraon. He's so overrated. He wouldn't have made the first cut in the 80s.

I'm 59, and was a teen back in the 1970s. Even back in the mid 1970's we use to use the word Holmes (with the L being pronounced) when having fun trash talking with other kids....and it was always used in a fun, light hearted way. The usage of Holmes has been around since the 1960s.
Later on, I heard that some areas in the country started to drop the 'L' and were saying it as 'Homes' (dropping the L sound) -- and connecting to the word 'Homeboy' but it was also meant to be more harsh as far as the meaning behind it when trash talking someone.

@@cindyknudson2715 Back when I was a teen, I think a lot of us, when we used the word Holmes we kind of associated it with Sherlock -- as in 'Go get a Clue"
We used 'Holmes' as trash tallk/an insult to someone who didn't get a joke...or to just pick on them as if they weren't smart, did something dumb, or was showed up by another friend.
And that was exactly what Larry was doing when he he said 'Holmes' lol. Already trying to get the other guy thinking about that trash talk rather than focusing 100 percent on the game. : )

I grew up in L.A. and first heard it in the early 70s too when I was a kid. The "L" was always silent and the proper spelling probably shouldn't even include it since it was an abbreviation of the latino expression "homeboy." Having said that, the first time I heard it was when an older neighborhood friend saw my 6th grade class roster and there was somebody on the list named Holmes. My friend started laughing hysterically and that's how I learned about its usage.
It could be used interchangeably as either an insult or a term of endearment. Just depended on the context. The next year I started Junior High and everybody was calling each other Holmes (or Homes). "Homie" also derives from the same source but that generally has a positive connotation.

    • @StormyPeak
      @StormyPeak ปีที่แล้ว

@@ContrarianCorner No, the 'homeboy' Homes, came after the original Holmes.
      -------------------------------------------
      From the Urban Dictionary:
"Holmes" (L is not silent) is the correct Ebonics pronunciation which has a history of being used equivalently with, "dude", "guy", "man" or similar non-familiar alternatives not in the third person.
It was made popular in late 1960s East Coast slang, and *then later devolved into, "homes" (silent L) at which point it was incorrectly assumed to be short for, "homeboy"*
      ----------------------------------------------
I grew up in Idaho, again, a teen in the early 1970s and it was Always 'Holmes'....heard it on t.v. as such.
I can, however, understand how it, could have been misheard and very easily being spoken as 'Homes' -- especially by inner city kids where the the term 'homeboy' was probably used more often than like in the suburbs or rural/small communities.
Anyway... regardless, Larry was using the word Holmes. Which in some of those 'Larry' clips out there is shown in captions as Holmes. I did, however seen one captioned clip of that story where the uploader incorrectly used the word 'Homes' when that clip was played.

What is left out in the video is when Bird says "You all know who's going to win this so who's planning on coming in second" is Bird thought Leon Wood was going to win. He explained this in another video I saw of him. That is why Bird said "who's planning on coming in second?". He thought the rest of them would be fighting for 2nd place.

Bird wasn't known as a three point specialist when he played. It was when he won the 3 point competition when that talk started. He was a power forward/small forward hybrid, his game was 10ft plus post and fade and he was dominant. And he passed better than 99 percent of big men.
