    The thing about Bird that I noticed when I watched him play live 35-40 years ago: he was really fun to watch OFF THE BALL ON DEFENSE!! Because you’d watch him and think, “Why’d he run over there?” Or, “Why’d he do that?” And then a few seconds later, you’d say, “Ohhhhhh…. THAT’S why!!!” He KNEW what the other team was going to do, or where the pass was going. He knew what was going to happen before it happened. Sometimes even before the other team knew it. Which made him one helluva defender. Larry’s offense and clutch shooting is always raved about. As it should be. But his defense was also among the best of all time.

      Bird is a very underrated defender! He was great at reading facial expressions and body language. He could figure out a play fast ...him and DJ were really good at that!

    I saw Bird play his entire career from college on. People who say he wasn't athletic don't get it. Before Bird hurt his back he could reverse dunk with the best of them. You can't be as good as Bird was and not be athletic. Bird was an outstanding athlete, not on the level of Jordan or Kobe, say, but still very very good, and remember Jordan never won a championship until Bird retired, because he couldn't get past Bird. Larry is top five all time. You want my top five from 1-5, ok, I give it. 5. Bird. 4. Kobe. 3. Bill Russell. 2. Jordan. 1. Wilt Chamberlain. Bird would dominate today's game the way it's played now. Yeah, if he wanted to average 40 he could, but he was such an unselfish player in giving up the ball that it's more likely 30-35 for sure. And remember, Bird only took one or two threes a game because the game wasn't focused on the three point shot. Today, he would take 5-10 threes a game and shoot around 50%. Kobe Fan is right: Bird could do anything Magic could do, but Magic couldn't do all that Larry could. Magic once said that Larry Bird kept him up at night, and the only player that Magic ever feared was Bird. That's all you need to know.

    If Larry was given free reign of the game today, He'd be dumping 3 after three after 3 Much like the 3pt contest. He'd tune in all net mode. I see 40-45 ppg easy.

    Cool reaction. Liked. My GOAT is two headed. Bird & MJ. I've not seen any players come close to the level they were on in my lifetime. I love the NBA now. I'm not one of those old heads that just lives in the past. I evolved with the game. But those two guys were like aliens compared to every player I've seen in my lifetime. MJ gets the edge with his athletic abilities. But Larry lacking that kinda makes him look even sweeter. Larry Legend and Air Jordan have the best basketball IQ that I have ever witnessed. It's so off the charts different for them because of that. Others may surpass their records & accomplishments...and some have...but that is kind of secondary to what I witnessed. If there ends up being another player like them, I'll say it first....but as of today, I haven't seen anything close.

      i dont think larry ever averages 40.. not because he couldn't.. because he wouldn't... it wouldn't benefit the team. he may average 30;to 35 but instead of 6 assists per game it would be 10 to 12.. and instead of 10 boards it may be 13.. larry was as good if not better at passing as he was shooting or scoring. a 10 reb and 7 assist career guy for a guy who didnt dominate the ball and in that era would easily translate to a triple double machine in this era... the ONLY REASON bird doesnt average a triple double today would be more about how he changes a team. .. so with him others who wouldn't necessarily be known as passers now play team ball and pass and share... some of larrys teams had 4 guys averaging more than 5 assists... his team ball is infectious so he may end up only averaging 8 or 9 while inspiring 3 other teammates to average 6 or more... the boards? the only thing stopping him from averaging 15 is the fact he would be out on the perimeter more in this era..

    36 points, 14 rebounds, 11 assists for his career!! 8 MVPs in a row. His rookie season was the first year he ever played with three point line. And in today's NBA if you breathe on someone they call a foul. Larry would have a heyday with that. If I was starting a team he'd be the first pick. You can build around Larry with anybody. Magic wasn't in Larry's league. Magic average a few more assist because he handled the ball all the time. Larry wasn't fast but he was tenacious rebounding the ball and his first step was as quick as anybody. I'll take quickness over speed any day and skill over speed.

    I don't think anyone can say for sure who #2 is . Or next. but I don't believe there has ever been a more complete and well rounded basketball player than that of Larry Bird. The Greatest? Chamberlain still holds more records than any one player that will ever play. Records that players in today's game will never even approach. His play changed the rules. No other player impacted the game more than him. Rings are great but those are team awards. Michael Jordan talked about his 6 rings. Bill Russell won 8 straight! 11 total!

Yes, Larry Bird could play in today's NBA, and put all these dudes to shame. LeBron who? That era had 20 LeBrons running around the league. He'd be just another very good player. I figure he'd shoot 56-58% from the field and maybe 46% from 3, 90% from the line. He'd probably take 20 to 23 shots per game though, so without a ton of free throws or more shot attempts (or higher fg%) he can't do like 40ppg. It's just not feasible without all 3 of those categories (shot attempts, fg%, free throw attempts) also being very, very high, or at least 2. Remember MJ had to shoot 28 times a game to do 37ppg, and Wilt's FGA during his 50ppg season is even more ridiculous. I think Larry's 3pt % would be higher, and he'd get a few more FT attempts. His mid range and post play fg% might only be a little better than in the 80s. I don't see him shooting over 60% from the field, so I'd say he'd average around 32.to 33ppg

  • @stevenharmon3876

    @BUTV in today’s era Bird would easily average 40+ and I personally believe he would probably average 50+. He would be taking as many 3’s as everyone else does in today’s era instead of just 3 or 4 a game he was taking in his era. Can’t hand check anymore so no one would be able to contain him defensively in today’s era and I believe from the free throw line alone he’d average probably 15-20 a game, so yeah I believe he’d average 50+ in this era. Not only that, but I also believe he would easily and by far have the biggest contract in NBA history.

He got angry when you put a white guy or a rookie on him since he knew they weren't the best in the league for sure and he needed the challenge. There will NEVER EVER EVER be another Larry Bird. Oh and regarding how much he will score in today's NBA? The answer is: AS MUCH AS HE WANTED TO! He himself said while playing that he could score 40 EVERY game if he wanted to but he was more interested in winning and making his teammates active than stats. My dad was a huge Lakers fan since the 1970's and when I was growing up, if we talked about basketball, he would often bring up how he hated Larry Bird because he would derail potential Lakers championships and because he was just too good. So I got to know and perceive Bird was a well-known killer on the court than my peers who idolized MJ and waved off Bird. It's true that he's rarely, if ever, mentioned in the GOAT conversation, and I would imagine that's because he doesn't look like a basketball player, he looks like a Radioshack manager, and there's this misperception he was just an elite shooter with no flashiness to him or other elite skills in his bag. Plus I think when people think of that era of the NBA, they mention Magic (my favorite player) because he's a lot more camera-friendly and his passes are uniquely insane. Hopefully, more and more people learn about Larry Legend and how he earned that nickname being one of the smartest players who ever played the game and could do almost everything super well. It's so fun to watch Bird play because he looks awkwardly clumsy and ultra-refined at the same time, yet he's piling those stats like nothing.

      I know intangibles is an overused word, but consider the fact that Larry Berg, with the only roster change from a 27 win season. His rookie year they went from the cellar to the Eastern conference finals. The next year they won at all Larry Bird simply makes everybody on the team better. unlike many superstars he got more dangerous when he did not have the ball. He was setting pics, drawing the double team, or positioning his"can’t jump body"for yet another rebound. Yes, certainly and without a doubt the best small forward ever to play the game.

      2) Larry's persona is recognized as the hick from french lick. If you accept that, you'll surely be beat.

    The big problem for Bird today is today they are way too soft, he would foul out just from the trash talking, not to mention the way he real physicalness of the old game.
    When Larrys retirement was done there was no game at the Boston Garden yet it was sold out, let that sink in "no game yet sold out" for one mans retirement.
    For those that think Larry Bird was not as good as he really was. This comment is for those whom never had the chance to see him play.
    Little know thing about Larry to those that never saw him play , he could effect the outcome of a game and never take a shot thats how devastating his passing skills were. Here is one thing that most fans (people) either don't know or try to ignore, prior to Larry joining the NBA there was no such thing as a three point line, that came in when Bird was starting his first year off in his NBA career. Just think about what would todays game be without the three point line or if the line was one foot farther out like it was when it was first introduced. Food for thought.
    At that time it was not about the individuals stats it was about the win. But if you need some stats here you go:
    Here are some of Larry Bird's notable career achievements and statistics:
    Three-time NBA champion (1981, 1984, 1986); Two-time NBA Finals MVP (1984, 1986); Three-time NBA MVP (1984-86); 12-time NBA All-Star (1980-88, 1990-92); Nine-time All-NBA First Team (1980-88);
    All-NBA Second Team (1990); Three-time All-NBA Defensive Second Team (1982-84); NBA Rookie of the Year (1980); NBA All-Rookie Team (1980); Three-time NBA Three-Point Contest champion (1986-88);
    Career-high in points: 60 (March 12, 1985) -- tied for franchise record with Jayson Tatum; Named NBA Coach of the Year (1998); and Named NBA Executive of the Year (2012).
    Larry Bird, was the first player to accomplish the 50-40-90 achievement, and one of two players to achieve the feat in multiple seasons.
    Career averages:
    24.3 points per game
    10.0 rebounds per game
    6.3 assists per game
    88.6% free throw percentage
    49.6% field goal percentage
    37.6% 3-point percentage
    Now we can't forget that Bird famously played with two injured ankles and a notoriously cranky back that forced him to lay down on the floor during practice breaks. After season-ending foot surgery just six games into the 1988-89 season

      All facts here, Larry could thrive in any league because he was able to do anything, especially for his size

    He would average a triple double with no doubt. Did you notice what Zeke did as they were leaving the court?

    i love magic... it took me time but i learned to love magic because he was great.. and unselfish in the sense that he had the skill to score more... but it wasnt important to him.. saying that there is no evidence that tells me magic is actually a better passer.. he is a pg and has control of the ball and I've always out of respect just given him the edge in that because if i didnt it would be too lopsided because larry was basically better at every other skill... but when you critically look at the evidence you cant tell me that magic is a better passer. if anything there may be evidence larry was better... just look at their best assists videos on TH-cam... magics passes are mostly his no looks and fast break... larrys has a more wide range.. larry full court pass.. insane.. larrys tip passes.. insane.. never seen anything like it consistently until joker now... then his passes while on the floor? show me anyone else doing that ... he was every bit magics equal if not better

  • @brianholleran6340
    @brianholleran6340 ปีที่แล้ว

    luka and joker are worse examples of what larry would do today.... one overlooked aspect of larrys game was his ball handling... he was a great ballhandler at 6 10... definitely better than joker and imo even luka if he had the benefit of how today is called.. so if he were allowed to palm and carry like today then for certain you would see him take the ball up the court more often like joker... and with todays open lanes he let alone magic would kill the league with their passing

    The reason Bird was so hard to guard because he was slow etc. Bird could beat you in so many ways. He could not take shot and beat you. Players would have to try to think like him. That is why Bird was so great. I got the pleasure watching the legends during that time. The NBA to soft now to play with the legends. They have great talent as well now. But to soft.

    Bird did not like Kent benson because of how kb treated him at Indiana so bird, mchale would trash benson in nba. Kb was top pick in 77 draft

    I saw the Reggie Miller drop a couple 3s on the Celtics...talking trash, Im sure.
    Larry dropped 7 3s....to completely obliterate the Pacers and Reggie. I cant be sure, but I think I heard he'd only missed one.....
    So Larry was 7/8 in 3pt land...because a rookie opened his mouth. 😄
