RedCat SC Pro Review

  • In this video we unbox and test the RedCat SC Pro, also known as the Blackout. After having this RC brought to our attention in the comments, AJ orders one up and gives it a try. Come along as we put this offering from RedCat to the test. Being a budget RC, this one is smaller than it's competition. Will it deserve a place in the short course shoot out?

Redcat has a few good models sprinkled among their borderline toy grade stuff. I have a TR-MT10e that has performed well and survived whatever abuse i subjected it to. I think it is still one of the best trucks for the price.

Well if you weren't pleased with the short course truck. I'd stay away from the redcat volcano cause it aint much better. Don't get me wrong red cat has good products their 1/10 scale line just needs improvement especially their hubs. Will agree with you about the transmitter though there pretty nice. kind of reminds me of a fly sky transmitter. Thank's for Sharing 👍💯✌

Had a Redcat 'Short Course' Vortex nitro truck 10 or more years ago and boy was that thing a pile of junk. It was definitely cheap, but it also broke so easily it was not worth even bothering with. It was also on the smaller side compared to a real SCT like this one. This one at least appears to be a little bit stronger, as mine would have for sure broke doing some of the stuff in your footage.

There are many great things to unlock if you know what to do. The diffs are amazing and the chassis extremely stiff. Suspension arms are all 3-point mounts so there is very little slop. The stock suspension set-up is terrible, though and needs attention.. The springs are too stiff and the shock oil too thin. Move the lower shock mounts inward on all 4 to increase travel and switch to 50wt silicone oil. Set ride height to level driveshafts when ready to run. Set all 4 camber to -2deg, and reduce rear toe-in to about 1 deg each side. The steering should be neutral to 1 deg toe-out. Lastly, the inboard steering link is too low which causes the wheels to toe-out as the suspension compresses. Add two washers under the balls on the steering arm on each side to bring the steering linkage parallel with the suspension arms. Once you do this, it is a fantastic truck and the size is perfect for the local fields. It handles like an SC is supposed to, instead of hopping all over. PS. get a a giant servo saver and ditch the one it comes with. The first things I will upgrade will be aluminum steering linkage, and aluminum uprights. i wouldn't change to aluminum arms because the chassis is too stiff. Something has to give a little.

  • @dannysdailys

I forgot all about it, but Red cat came out with that servo saver garbage on the original Blackout and it had the same problems, and can't be adjusted. Wait until the spring softens up and starts falling off. I can't believe they're still using it. What junk, and I don't consider 250 dollars to be cheap for anything. Especially for 2 dollars worth of plastic. I had to convert mine to a more conventional servo saver and that fixed it. Other than that, the Blackout is one of my most durable trucks at 3s. It's almost indestructible. I even bought all the metal A-arm options and never needed them. But that does explain why the rear end constantly wants to come around. The front wheels aren't trying to stop it and straighten it out. Even a gyro can't help that mess. But if you upgrade the servo saver, and add a gyro receiver, at 3s this thing is a screamer and will go over 60mph. Durable? I hit a jump wrong and from about 15 feet in the air, it crash landed and cart wheeled almost 1/2 an acre, landed on it's feet, and came right back to me with no damage. I've gone thought 4 bodies however. But that's my fault. LOL I have 12 Red Cats and no, they're not that durable. Blackout aside. Some of the newer ones are pretty good however. They added a brand and those are very good, but I see they don't make them anymore.

My preowned Redcat Gen 8 V1 Scout II models have a lot of issues with axles, lower link mounts, gearbox housings, and input gears. It seems quality control isn't just there.
They are preowned and I bought them in Ukraine just in the middle of the war for 350$. I have invested 100$ more on quality axles and gearboxes only.
You can have problems with any car but not every car loses its wheel by cracking the outer portal housings.
    No more Redcat for me.

You are right on the money, the Blackout series is a great option for entry level, or reentry into the hobby. The way they make a lot of the parts identical for more affordable repairs. Another thing is that two of the three blackout vehicles have the same chassis, the XBE has a different chassis. They are fairly easy to work on making it a great lineup to learn the ins and outs of RC repair, and upgrades.

I started out with a Redcat SC10e and it had solved many of the issues that you mentioned with the Blackout, to give Redcat the knod in the short course arena, pick up a SC10e, and give it a try, I think you will be amazed at the difference in the vehicles. I still have mine, and I will admit that I have had to replace a fair amount of parts due to breakage, also I must admit that I am extremely hard on my RC vehicles. To the point, it has been a true joy to race, bash, and stunt. A nice little benefit of the Redcat family, is the mods and replacement parts are very inexpensive. Also easy to repair. My only recommendation right out of the box is add tape under the chassis covering all of the screws as they tend to wiggle loose fairly quickly under high stress bashing.

🤨 Hrrm... Usually great reviews, but this one could be inproved in an important way: Test simple solutions! Tires are the obviously the problem... plenty of short wheelbase cars have awesome handling! Ever driven a porsche? In fact, shorter wheel bases suffer less rear end swing around than longer wheelbase cars during tight cornering due to the lever arm of the chassis length! In all honesty some RTR vehicles cannot be fairly assessed with certain flaws that come out of the box. Here, tires are the clear solution... I think you did cut the poor little blackout a "bit short" because cheap RTR kit tires are famously terrible... I think it would be nice if you saw simple weaknesses in a vehicle like poor tires, then a simple swap or upgrade like Jang from URC used to do of at least tires would help us see the true ability of the vehicle. Simply swap out with the Senton or Losi... Granted many higher end Vehicles don't need Tire changes but even then some do. I'm not a redcat fanboy, but I fo know from seeing the blackout pro compete against some other trucks that with better tires it holds its own speed and handling wise. Amazingly it's almost more of a 12th scale though in all honesty!

    • @AJJAMStudios
      @AJJAMStudios  ปีที่แล้ว

While your comment does bring up valid points, and we appreciate them, we do not usually swap out anything for an unboxing test unless breakage occurs. These tests are for what you get for your money. We are aware that any RC can be improved and in our Brutal Reviews we go over that but not for unboxing vids. Thank you for the feedback 😎👍

You should put some duratrax c2 tires in it and rerate it. The tires on it are terrible. I put slightly larger c2’s on mine and it was a whole different animal. Completely rids of it being squirrely. I took rear bumper with mud flaps off and slightly trimmed front of body and nothing rubs and it hooks up on dirt and pavement really well.

It's hard to justify the $270 price tag for a small 1/10 SCT. The value IMO just isn't there. Sure it's brushless but now a days you can get a solid brushless setup to throw in any truck pretty cheap that'll get the job done. If I was going to get a redcat basher, I think you'd just be better off saving for a 1/6 Shredder at $399 which is a good value for the price.

Great video brother 👍. My son has a T A pro 4 and bought me one these to race with him. I like it but yes I modified it. Loose the mud flaps they hang in the wheels. Kimbrough servo saver and rcawd steering linkage fixed the control issues. And also if you buy another body it needs rear wheel opening mods because of the stupidly short wheelbase. Probably spent $150 on mods.great for beginners but if you can afford Traxxas or losi or team associated then go for it but if you want cheap fun redcat is ok.
