- I did this video to help other's with there spur gear problem. I hope this is enough info. 64tooth spur gear metal part#11184, 30tooth pinion metal.
You can find these parts on ebay or google HPI spur gear or gears.
It can't be any smaller then a 29tooth pinion maybe 28 because it won't reach the spur gear witch is smaller then the stock spur. Remember this is a custom job so be patient with yourself. The most important part of this build is to have the right spacer or bearing in between the motor mount and spur to keep it in place, you'll not be able to use the c-clip because the metal spur covers the lock. good luck and if you have any questions just comment.

Nice bro everyone else claim they needed to shave off 1/8 of an inch on the neck bore so the e clip would fit to hold the spur in place but you found a way around it with the shim/spacer on the shaft end to hold it in place instead of the e clip 🤙 what website did you get the spur and pinion?

I heard if you use a piece of paper between the gears you can get them to set perfect every time
I need to find some top end speed gears. prolly gonna be my next project. we just finished a track width increase. new much longer arms and linkages. now it's stable and doesn't drive all over the place I think it's ready to go fast. 60$ project but we just ran a 3s 5500 and it handles like a team car now.
Ever hear the old saying a clean car is easier car to work on? It also keeps you from knocking all kinds of sand and grit into places it shouldn't be. It also makes for a more professional presentation but we can have it look like we know what we're doing now can we?
do you have to take that last plate off with the slot in it for the spur gear, this is the step I'm at and one of my hex screws are stripped at the head from factory... What can I do...

Ramiro DY got it to 55mph but I think it had a lil bit more just ran out of smooth road
I'm hoping to do this mod but in reverse on my lightning to get a steeper ratio with the 55t spur. looks like I'm gonna have to shave off some of the thickness of the spur. Thanks for uploading the video.

Actually found a metal 50t for a 1/16 scale that's the same pitch looks like the 64t. Trying to get it in the 80's

Any news on whats the best thing to buy stock or this 64T spur gear overall performance ? I have noticed a noise in the differential i put some grease and sound reduced pretty much but i probably put the wrong one car didn’t spin the same without motor on but after breaking that grease i got better performance wonder if there is better tires i feel these tires stock are not for my usage i have street pavement and tires when i break grab on that solid i am scared i try to go lowest breaking level but i have tried the method to avoid tires from puffing up at high speeds .
I noticed transmiter range in my running area is about 30-40meters which isn’t enough as i once lost reception and truck got almost ran over
Your better off with the stock gear setup. But get a steal pinion. The stock pinion is brass and wears fast and destroys the gears. Tires I would get a street setup. The transmitter I would upgrade or maybe you just need a new receiver. At least if u upgrade most new transmitters don't need 8 batteries.
Thanks i will upgrade to 19t pinion metal instead of the 17t that came with and upgrade to a more range transmiter with a gyro
hey man I got a 32t 48p hardened steel pinion gear 1/8 bore is the 1/8 bore to big on the motor shaft I tightin it and its tight but when I go the pinion gear moves is 1/8 bore to big....thanks brother

Do u recommend strapping two 2s hexfly 5800mah 30C in parallel?
MrGetLikeMe its going to add to much weight to that one side. it will give tons of run time and higher output but watch your motor temps

is the washer bigger than the front of the gear or the same size to fit in the hole
It's bigger it does not fit in that whole..if u can try to fit a bearing in there it would be better. Either way just make sure it's not to tight

whenever I go to look at pinion gears I find 30 tooth ones, but there are different T ratings. Which T rating do I use?

what 3s battery would you recommend?
What tooth pinion and spur did you use? I bought the Valcano pinion and spur gears from redcat. No problem installing them but my blackout wouldn't run for more than 5 seconds with them in. It would run real fast then die, run real fast then die. every time i had to turn it on and off to get it to work again.
does it work fine with out them? also could be to tight up against the motor mount and causing it to seiz up. check it out and hit me back
+King Veonietus it was so bad I actually bought the stock ones for the blackout. I know it seemed like it was very hard for the ones from the Volcano to have enough contact. There was no way they could get to tight.
Redcat needs to put out a steel spur gear for the blackout! Is this the first time your having to replace the gears?

So the 64 tooth spur is smaller the than stock 55 tooth? Confused on as why it has to be 28 or higher. Why not a 21t pinion or 26t.
Yes the 64tooth is smaller and the pinion won't reach if its less then 28. But in my opinion you're better off just keeping the the stock spur and getting a steel pinion. The speed with the 64tooth isn't really much different.

i just got my 64t spur and 30t pinion, ive gotten the mesh to my liking, only issue is how loud the gears are, did you have this problem also? Are you still running the 64/30 or have you adjusted? thanks in advance
Robert LaBombard Yea it can be pretty loud especially if ur not use to hearing it. but i loved it. but no I have switched back to stock. I did buy a 18 tooth steel pinion its better then that brass pinion. haven't stripped a spur yet.

@@hchris24 sorry don't have the part number. Got it off a ebay. And yes i did reverted back to stock do to some lack of torque and hotter engine.

aye for the spur gear,the washer you used was it just 1 or 2 and does it matter what size?i just got my new steel 64T spur gear and since the original one dont fit no more.not sure what washer to use or how many.
if you can try using a bearing.. I have a spacer I found laying around but it's about 1/8 of an inch. just enough to keep the gear from sliding out of place.

QuickDrawMcDraw 227 Just keep going up on the pinion gear. The stock pinion is 18 tooth so keep going up a tooth at a time to find your balance.

The original pitch on the Spur and Pinion is incorrect and that's why they keep burning up the gears .I have to change mine also with about 12 hours run time .

No. U will loose torque and would have to figure out how to keep the spur gear in place. I would replace the pinion gear to steel if yours comes brass. The brass pinion is what goes and ruins the spur gear.

Hey man.. question? I wanna switch out my spur gear , and I need to know what the diameter of the shaft is for the spur gear.. looking online no luck, I’ve messaged Redcat , waiting on a reply
Not sure the size diameter of the shaft to the spur gear. But pretty sure they only make one spur gear for it. The gear in this video was from a different RC. It fit on the shaft but you have to figure out how to make it stay. I think I used a spacer or bearing. But to take a wild guess I'd say the shaft is 5mm thick.
V6 Vic if it’s 5mm thick than.. I’m %1000 fine lol found a spur gear that’s 5mm thick it’s a 62T spur 😊 thank you for the help I’m more confident , I might not have to 3D print a new holder BUT a spacer!
I love the RC community , doing things for RC cars that the manufacture should do, because all honesty the black out xte is a beast of a machine and they could have had it like how the rustler is with all the hop ups etc , even if you had to buy an adapter from them to use 3rd party parts id still be game , but I guess this makes things more fun! And interesting 😊
I have also order the same tires as the ones in this video... can i use them on stock settings? Or do i need to make any necessary upgrades?

since the spur gear is smaller and the pinion gear is bigger to get the mesh, how is the acceleration and speed compared to the original plastic spur and metal pinion?
Bunthoeun Has the acceleration decreases but you will get more top end speed. I topped out at 55mph but a few people said you can get to about 45mph or more on 3s with stock gearing. But really depends on what you want to do I went back to stock gearing but got the steel pinion to prevent stripping of the spur gear.

the 26 pinion is not gona reach I try'ed it..29 or 30 is ur best bet unless u could find a pinon with a bigger diameter
if ur not gona do it for speed runs honestly ur better off with the stock spur and a steel pinion witch they have now.

+King Veonietus I actually got mine when it first came out, and I had to wait 3 months for it because of the dock workers on strike... It was the worst 3 months ever.
Lol that sucked...we'll at least you won't have to worry about making these mods. I have to find a better spacer to keep my spur gear in place. The one I have isn't working to great.
All blakouts come with plastic spurs.

No. If anything anything slightly hotter. Higher gears are gona make hotter. I was just trying to prevent stripping of the spur gear which was an issue at the time of this video.
@@VicToR_Rider I have a stock pinion, 15 , 16, and 9 tooth , you think if I use the stock pinion or a smaller size it’ll be way cooler then stock? I don’t mind loosing some speed
@@Andrew-hh3ol it'll be cooler but not by much. It'll be fine with stock pinion unless you're planning to run battery pack after pack.
@@VicToR_Rider I’m trying to get in the 120~ degrees range for my motor and keep my esc cooler the only motors that stay cool are crawler motors this truck has mostly given me diff and electronics issues which have been sorted out

The stock 18/55 gear setup is a 3.06:1 ratio, and this 30/64 setup is 2.13:1 ratio. So these gears are about 43% taller. That seems like a huge change! (Like running a 26 tooth pinion with the stock 55T spur.) Do you see a big jump in top end speed? Conventional wisdom says acceleration would suffer and it would drain batteries a lot quicker. Has that been your experience?
yes it has. I have converted it back to the stock gearing I had my fun with it as a speed car now back to bashing lol.

Rh Last Nae yes back to the stock plastic spur gear and the the 18 tooth pinion but steel not bras. I guess the bras pinion was the issue with the spur stripping all the time. I havent had a problem yet with the steel pinion.

I'm going to try it. I think it will be fine just gotta watch your motor and make sure it doesn't over heat. I don't have a fan on mine yet but that will help. If u do run it on 3s just ease into it. I'll also make another video on speed run with 2s and 3s

there 12mm hex Bigfoot tires. I'm not sure the diameters you could find them on ebay or redcatdealer.com

robert jr take the gear off and look to see if that grub screw is going all the way through. Also what gear set up do u have now?
robert jr If your using stock gearing redcat has a steel pinion now so the spur gear wont strip like it use to
Redcat uses a 0.6 module gear you can get it from Tamiya or Hotracing if you want custom sizes. HSP also makes a lot of parts for Redcat.
Do you run this on 3s?
I did when I try'ed my speed run but the pinon was stripped a few teeth and didn't perform properly so I haven't run this yet with the working setup.
+King Veonietus i got a 3s zippy 5000mah 20c lipo for it and ran it with with stock gears and the car ran amazingly bruh.i was barley going half throttle and it was going as fast as the original 2s lipo would do.i tried 2 runs with 3s and i couldnt get the rc to full throttle cause my street does like a turn its not fully straight.that 3s lipo gives it tons of power.and i was running 3s lipo with one of the teeth missing from the plastic spur gear.by the way does the pinion gear for the 64t spur have to be 30 32?will a 29t hsp gear work fine without issues?i dont force my rc and dont ramp it.
Nice...yea a 29tooth should be wide enough..I only went with the 30tooth so it would fit perfectly

+King Veonietus oh yea.maybe if you can show in your next video on running the 3s lipo,can you show us how you fit the 3s lipo in the battery holder cause mine didnt really fit in there.i had mine strapped with a rubber band and the battery on its side in there.

If it's for your blackout any should be fine just want to make sure it will fit. I have soft pack turnigy's and I have to force them in. Hard pack would be your best bet.
