Thank you so much! This is one of my older tutorials and it still surprises me when I get comments here. I love that it's been helpful to so many people! Curly freezer paper...I do one of two things; if I need it right away, I iron it flat and let it cool. If I have time to wait for it, I cut it down to size and then stick it under my cutting mat and leave it there until I need it. If I still have trouble, I'll hold it until the printer takes it.
i found this while looking for a tutorial and this video is such a time capsule. the fact that it's a twilight t-shirt adds so much to the vibe. i love this, thank you
I think freezer film is closer to plastic wrap. Freezer paper is paper with a thin plastic coating on one side that will temporarily stick to fabric when ironed. Hope that helps!
You could, of course. The coll thing about freezer/grease-proof paper is that is has a light plastic coating on one side that allows it to adhere temporarily when ironed on to the fabric. That's why it's so useful for crafts and especially for stenciling.
It usually found with the aluminum foil and plastic wrap at the supermarket. It has a wax back side that will temporarily stick to fabric when ironed on. I hope that helps!
Freezer paper has a wax on the back that temporarily sticks to the fabric when you iron it on. You can use paper or card, but you have to be really, really careful or use temp spray adhesive.
If you use the freezer paper, you can just iron the piece you cut out right into the center. That's my preferred method, but you can also make bridges from the main part of the letter, leaving a tiny sliver of freezer paper so the small piece stays attached to the rest of the stencil.
This is exactly what I was looking for! The only bummer is now I don't have any requests for your TTMT. Maybe something will come to mind eventually. This tutorial was brilliant! The music made the whole thing! I was jammin'. :D
I've never tried lacquer, so I can't answer that, but spray paint will definitely work. When you do that, make sure the only thing showing is the part you want to stencil to protect from overspray and you should only need one coat.
I've found that they wash very well. The paint does soften and fade a little with time, so if that's something you don't want, I'd suggest air drying yours.
Thankyou, this really helps alot!! My last attempt at a Cullen Crest shirt failed epicly because everything kept moving, but the freezer paper is sure to help. Thanks again!
You can get the fabric paint at Hobby Lobby, Joanns or Michael's. You might be able to find it somewhere else, too, but that's where I got it. I think it cost about $4 a bottle, but one bottle goes a LONG way. Michael's has t-shirts on sale for $2 this week, too. Hope that helps!
Sketch book paper won't stick like freezer paper will. Freezer paper has wax on the back, so ironing with a warm iron creates a temporary bond, which is what makes it an excellent choice for stenciling.
You can also use regular paper or card stock with a temporary spray adhesive on the back. If you do that, spray the paper after you cut the stencil. I hope that helps! :)
The paint keeps it stuck! I usually take the shirt outside and give it a good shake before washing (or wearing) for the first time, too. I'm glad you like it, I hope you try your own!
If the paint is wet enough when you put the glitter on, it stays on really well. You might loose a tiny bit, but all the ones I've done have held up really well.
*big smiles* Thank you so much! I was looking for DIY screen printing specifically to make team edward shirts and your video was near the top of my search. Thank you Thank you Thank you!!!!!!
What an incredible tutorial!!! The only thing I can't figure out is how the plastic from the freezer paper doesn't leave a mark on the shirt. Guess I'll figure it out, because I'm doing this PRONTO!!!
If you're super-careful with your stencil, you can use it a couple of times. If not, try layering several sheets of freezer paper and cutting out more than one stencil at a time. It works great if you tape the paper together with masking tape. If you need loads of shirts, I'd go for screen printing. There are some great how-to videos of how to DIY.
@Xx0hemgeexX You can, but it won't keep the paint from bleeding like freezer paper does. Freezer paper has wax on the back, so it sticks when you iron it on.
I have been able to reuse some stencils. It really depends on how cleanly it pulls off. I've not had good luck with taping...the paint tends to bleed. Good luck with yours!
omg thank you so much this has helped so much i have been looking for a way to make my breaking dawn shirt for this friday. you have been a great help thanks :)
I love this video, it answers so many questions with a great song playing as you do it! Does the glitter come off in the wash or does the paint keep it stuck?
@SeaHellHookah I haven't had any trouble with glitter washing off, but if you're concerned there's a glue (made by Tulip, I think) that's specifically for adding glitter on top of fabric.
@XRadiokillaX I prefer Jacquard textile paints, but there are lots of good inexpensive paints, too. Tulip makes a soft, brush on paint that works really well.
@emobboy94 Freezer Paper is the only name I know for it. Baking paper is not the same. Freezer paper has a light wax coating on one side. If you can't find that, you can also use regular paper or card stock and then use a temporary spray adhesive on the back to hold it in place while you stencil.
YAY! That's one of my favorites of all the stencils I've done. I really hope he likes it...and you know *cough* friends of sewhooked challenges... Wink, wink, nudge, nudge...
Just wanted to let you know, I work in a craft store, and I direct people to your video ALL THE TIME when they want to do just a few shirts. (If they want to do more than two or three I tell them to get the screen printing stuff) but I love love LOVE this for just a few shirts! But I do have to ask, (because I haven't figured it out yet) How did you get the freezer paper to stay flat?!?! When I do it it stay's curled, and I have to tape it to card stock to send it through the printer!
Thanks for uploading glad I watch this the only method I've ever seen was using spray paint and I was kind of leery about that and how intoxicating it could be with the fumes i've already started using three dimensional paint and experimenting with my daughter shirts so I know how paint can be easier then spray paint maybe possibly any rate have a good day
You can find freezer paper in grocery store where you'd find aluminum foil. My daughter is Team Werewolf and I'm Switerzerland, so I've made loads of different designs this way. :D
Thank you for the video. Yes I think you should do one with the voice or do a voice over. I think this will be fun for the grandkids. I will do the stencil of course.
I've had several request for a voice version. I made this tutorial 6 years ago before I knew a whole lot about making videos. Maybe I'll put a "real life" version on my to do list. Thanks for the suggestion. :)
that is wicked cool as! where exactly would you buy freezer paper? is it from a craft store or a supermarket or something? and thanks so much for the tutorial, the shirt looks ah-mazing:) im so gonna make one of these:) cept team jake lol. thanks, xx
@jentan80 You know, I have been thinking about redoing this video with voice instead of text. I wasn't doing TTMT when I posted this and hadn't done a voice video yet. Might be something for the future!
This particular paint washes really well. It does fade eventually, but it takes on a nice worn t-shirt look, not a cracked and fading sad stencil!

Ah, thank you! This is definitely a Way Back When video. ♥
out of all how to make your own t-shirt vids this is the best well done
some people who stencil their t shirts make it look really simple and kind of boring but you with the glitter made it look pro.

Wow, thanks! I'm always thrilled to hear that any tutorial I've worked on is helpful. Good luck with your stenciling!
Thanks! I discovered the song here on TH-cam and it's since become one of my favorites.

My pleasure! The Cullen Crest is a tough one and takes lots of patience, but the freezer paper makes a HUGE difference. Good luck!

Oh thats perfect! I'm so addicted to that poly flake glitter I've always wondered how I could stick it on my clothes.. hmm.. the possibilities!
Great video! I love that it's fast and so simple to understand! Now I have courage to try my own!
Thanks, I hope you do try it, it's lots of fun!

Thanks for the tut, I found it on a crafty website as a reference for help. You sure took the mystery out of the island thing.
If the paint is wet enough when you put the glitter on, it stays on really well. You might loose a tiny bit, but all the ones I've done have held up really well.
*big smiles* Thank you so much! I was looking for DIY screen printing specifically to make team edward shirts and your video was near the top of my search.
Thank you Thank you Thank you!!!!!!
well, thanks again !!! Can't wait to try this out. You make it look easy.
I hope you do! It's a really fun technique to use.

Freezer paper is available in most supermarkets. Check where the aluminum foil, wax paper and stuff like that is.
@Xx0hemgeexX You can, but it won't keep the paint from bleeding like freezer paper does. Freezer paper has wax on the back, so it sticks when you iron it on.

Thank you for sharing this simple tutorial!
Freezer paper has wax on the back and will stick when you iron it. It peels right off when you're done. Good luck with your stenciling!
@kbranders I put it directly into the printer. My printer is pretty picky, so I feed it through a single piece at a time.
Great idea, and I love the song! :)
I'm glad to have helped! Good luck with your stenciling. :)
omg thank you so much this has helped so much i have been looking for a way to make my breaking dawn shirt for this friday. you have been a great help thanks :)
Absolutely washer and dryer safe! I use Lumiere paint by Jacquard and it's intended for fabrics.
If you're really careful, you can usually get two or three shirts out of one stencil.
My pleasure! It's an awesome song...love their stuff. :)
I have seen some of her work, it's absolutely stunning!
I haven't had any problems with it cracking. The Lumiere paint is pretty flexible.
Hum, well, give it another try. It came on right away for me. I hope it works for you this time!
WOW, that is really well done. Wish I had the patience.
I hope you can get your hands on some so you can make yourself one!
Thank you! By far the easiest video. Great music 😊
@XRadiokillaX I prefer Jacquard textile paints, but there are lots of good inexpensive paints, too. Tulip makes a soft, brush on paint that works really well.
love the music and seems simple enough
@emobboy94 Freezer Paper is the only name I know for it. Baking paper is not the same. Freezer paper has a light wax coating on one side. If you can't find that, you can also use regular paper or card stock and then use a temporary spray adhesive on the back to hold it in place while you stencil.
gonna have to try this technique. Thanks
Hi, Mary, I'm glad you found my old tutorial useful. I still use this technique. :)
If you're really careful, you can usually get 2 or 3 uses from one stencil. If you want to do that, I'd recommend skipping the glitter.
Thanks! Any excuse to add a little sparkle to a project!
@909Barber It's Vampire by People In Planes.
YAY!
That's one of my favorites of all the stencils I've done. I really hope he likes it...and you know *cough* friends of sewhooked challenges... Wink, wink, nudge, nudge...
@stevevillanueva No, not really, but if i you need to see through, it you can use a light box or hold it up to a window or light.
What an awesome project! Good luck, I hope you're able to finish in time. :D
@VisneCrew2009 This particular color was Crimson Red Lumiere paint by Jacquard.
It's called "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" by The Proclaimers.
Just wanted to let you know, I work in a craft store, and I direct people to your video ALL THE TIME when they want to do just a few shirts. @DeeDank It will fade some over time, but I have shirts that I stenciled two or three years ago and they still look great!
@whosTryal you don't have to, but it will help the paint last longer
Have you tried mixing a bit of Odicoat with glitter and painting it on fabric for the holidays? Or using the glitter with a stencil?
I have not tried it with Odicoat, but that is a fun idea!
Heh, thanks. Freezer paper is usually found with the plastic wrap, aluminum foil, etc. I buy it at my supermarket.
@enocvargas You can usually find a roll for $4 or $5. It's really inexpensive and a roll lasts forever!
Thanks for uploading glad I watch this the only method I've ever seen was using spray paint and I was kind of leery about that and how intoxicating it could be with the fumes i've already started using three dimensional paint and experimenting with my daughter shirts so I know how paint can be easier then spray paint maybe possibly any rate have a good day
amber fords
I can't tell you why it doesn't, but I've never had a problem and I've made oodles of stuff with this technique!
@dimebagcfh Yes, it says freezer paper. It comes on a roll...and Walmart should have it. Good luck!
@dimebagcfh I get mine from my local grocery store. It's usually where you find the saran wrap, foil and such.
I hope you do, it's easy, cheap and pretty!
My pleasure, I'm really glad it helped. :)
Will the glitter wash off if you just put it on the paint or do you need to use fabric glue?
You can find freezer paper in grocery store where you'd find aluminum foil.
My daughter is Team Werewolf and I'm Switerzerland, so I've made loads of different designs this way. :D
Is there an alternative to freezer paper, such as maybe card stock?
Thank you for the video. Yes I think you should do one with the voice or do a voice over. I think this will be fun for the grandkids. I will do the stencil of course.
I've had several request for a voice version. I made this tutorial 6 years ago before I knew a whole lot about making videos. Maybe I'll put a "real life" version on my to do list. Thanks for the suggestion. :)
This is great. Love it.
My pleasure!
wow that was the best =) i love it!
Best tutorial! Thanks!
It's "Vampire" by People In Planes.
that is wicked cool as!
where exactly would you buy freezer paper? is it from a craft store or a supermarket or something?
and thanks so much for the tutorial, the shirt looks ah-mazing:)
im so gonna make one of these:)
cept team jake lol.
thanks,
xx
how much is the typical roll of freezer paper? Im very interested in stenciling now
did you put the freezer paper directly in the printer or did you print the design then trace onto the freezer paper?
Omg, thanks sooo much!!!! It helped me alot!!!
i'm so excited for tomorrow ~~
@sagalmibagal As long as you use acrylic or fabric paint, yes, absolutely washable!
You can find them at any craft or hobby store, hardware stores and sometimes the supermarket. :)
sory to bother you, but where do you get the fabric paint?? how much does it cost?
i really wanna make it for tomorrow..
BEUTIFUL HANDS
I use Lumiere and I've found it at Michael's, Hobby Lobby & Joanns.
@XRadiokillaX Not a thing if you use good paint. I've got a t-shirt I stenciled in 2007 and it still looks perfect!
I get mine at Hobby Lobby, but you can also order it online. Just search for "Poly Flake Glitter."
@jentan80 You know, I have been thinking about redoing this video with voice instead of text. I wasn't doing TTMT when I posted this and hadn't done a voice video yet. Might be something for the future!
Latex paint should work okay, but I haven't tried it. Even acrylic craft paint will work in a pinch. Freezer paper works great as a stencil guide. :)
Hmm, will the glitter come off after a few wash or something?
Thanks. It's Lumiere metallic fabric paint.
