When I was in college and we were going to a screen printing workshop we made our own print out designs on a transparent before going. The DIY part of this for us was that instead of printing onto transparent paper, we printed onto normal printer paper then used sunflower (may have been olive) oil and pretty much painted it across the paper and design. After it dried it was totally transparent where there was no design and when it was exposed onto the screen it came out perfect!

can anyone confirm whether it was olive or sunflower? I'm willing to try both, but if I can save a little time that'd be great too
I tried sunflower last month for doing some new screen printing and it came out fine, but if you can easily feed through tracing paper through your print or copy machine it is easier!
The only reason I had done it was cause it was A3 and didn't have any tracing paper that size.
Nice trick Lauren, do you think i can cut my design on paper using a Cricut machine? I'm still a little confused on how to add the design to the frame. I currently work with vinyl and make T-shirts but trying to find a better and more cost effective method to move my business to the next level. Thank you

Thank you for sharing... this was one of the first videos I watched when my husband and I had the quick idea of leaving our dropshipper and setting up a fully functional shop at home. I've been wanting to make Screen shirts for a long time again and now I can after finding out how to make my own screens. We use a Cricut right now and my daughter asked what a screened shirt was and now I can show her what I did when I was a teenager!

Wow, I finally found a pretty simple and comprehensible video on how to screenprint t shirts and other objects. I appreciate the info and the indepth explanations and want to thank you Charli Marie for giving of your knowledge. This is one mystery from childhood that has been answered. I can't wait to try it.
Awesome Tutorial. And great tip about doing a test screen. Its absolutely necessary and the first hurdle beginners face. in fact a lot of people I try to help get started give up because they ruin screens and they do not think its worth it. But i actually came up with a good way to find out your exposure time and only using one coated screen. Just cover 80% of the screen with a magazine or book to block light and only expose the 20% to light for 5 mins. Then every 3-4 mins move the cover over 20% then see what section washes out the best. Long comment, sorry :). Just love Screen Printing! I made a video about that experiment.

Similar to doing the test strip for exposure when printing in a darkroom. I like that!

Thanks for share. It's the same technique we used in the darkroom to find the best exposure time. We do this every time to fine tune and calibrate before printing because the intensity of lightbulb can change from last time it was used.

I have watched several videos on how to do this and i have to say that this one is the only one that i have seen that is truly a DIY video and is the video that i will be following if/when i decide to do my shirts.
This is the best single color DIY screen printing video that I've found. Thank you so much. Great production, transitions and sound. It's very easy to navigate and find the snippet of video I need, and you speak quickly andto the point :) I use a desk lamp instead of the sun, because I love in Florida and it is super duper bright, but I have no doubt your method works well! great video, thanks a lot! you can actually turn normal print paper translucent suitable for screen printing by taking your printed design (on normal white paper) and covering it on the backside with vegetable oil. Use a paper towel to rub it in making sure to saturate the whole piece of paper. Simply place it between 2 sheets of newspaper to blot away the excess. Once dry, the paper will have a similar translucency to tracing paper.
I have only used this method when using emulsion set by UV light, so may be worth a test with the photosensitive stuff, but I don't see why it wouldn't work :)

love the explanation. the most simplest way of understanding this. it's very interesting too.
Nice rundown of the home brew process. You can upgrade your experience by getting a few professional grade items like a scoop coater to apply the emulsion to the screen. That will help get the right amount of emulsion on the mesh and if you allow enough ventilation in the drying closet, it will not dwell and form those dimples. Emulsion is over 50% water. Also a 500 watt work lamp from the hardware store will work much better and more consistently than the sun. Come get some Catspit~!

great vid, really economic way of printing at home. if you want to expose a bit more accurately just buy a small uv bulb. put the screen and the bulb in a dark place and turn the UV bulb on for 90 secs. turn off, take it out and that is perfect exposure time. when you wash it out you'll get all the detail in your screen! Like the way you registered it. I'll be trying this later.
+Miles Khan great suggestion! I haven't had luck sourcing a UV bulb that works in the past, but that was back in New Zealand. Perhaps I'll have more luck finding that in England!
+CharliMarieTV Thanks for the tutorial - it's very helpful! I despise cutting out stencils so was glad to see this did not involve a Stanley knife! As Miles said, a UV bulb should work well. Have you tried local pet stores or online pet stores? Certain reptiles require uv light and I buy my bulbs from pet shops here in the UK online. Some low price stores sell cheap artist canvases. The frames would be great and you could use the canvas you cut away as a future masterpiece painting trimmed for a frame :)

some people just use regular strip light bulbs in a box it take s a good 10 minutes but is very accurate

When you've mixed the emulsion and activator, how long will it last for? Obviously if you're printing to order you won't be using it all at once I'm guessing?
No, you won't use all of it unless you got a tiny "sample" bottle set.
It will have a date, or should have, telling you how long of shelf life it should have. However if you keep it in the fridge it should make it last a little while longer. You will know when it stops being "good" when you make screens and it won't dry or if it comes out lumpy etc.
Store it in the back of the fridge and it'll last
No No don't cut the screen out if you don't expose it for the right amount of time. Just have emulsion remover handy.. Leave it sit on there for about 1 min and the emulsion will come off quick.. I haven't screen print in years but its good it see this video tho..
+NATURALLYOLINA the fabric I use to make the screens is super duper cheap! Much cheaper than buying screen cleaner hehe. though if you're using a bought frame then definitely that's the best way to go! :)

2. What printer to use to print film positives ? (I have a normal laser printer, will that do?)

+Vasu Gupta great questions! 1: use any synthetic fabric with a tight weave (that's when you look closely and see the little holes between the threads) 2: yep a laser printer is correct! I got mine printed at a print shop on a laser printer 3: it's called transparent film or a transparent sheet. :)
I screen printed a shirt in a middles school art class 23 years ago and the printing still looks good. The shirts all tore up w a bunch of holes but i still wear it around the house. I have a bunch of dickies work shirts I put metal band patches on & I want to put some cool METAL designs on the back. So i'm checking some diy stuff out.
