  • Allow me take you through the process of designing and printing your very own shirts! I've been doing this for quite a while now, and this method has served me well for those designs that aren't super detailed or technical (using halftones or thin lines).
    Supplies:
    -T-Shirt (or other cotton garment)
    -Embroidery hoop of desired size
    -Matte finish Mod Podge
    -Painter's tape
    -Paintbrushes (large, medium, and small for more detailed work)
    -Organza (found at most fabric stores)
    -Screen printing ink (found at most craft stores)
    -Squeegee (or other flat object that will serve the same purpose...I've used an ice scraper before. Whatever works)

    I'm here in 2020, just tried this method...IT WORKS!!!
    I added an extra step to his method: instead of just tracing my design onto the screen, then free hand painting around what I traced, I used masking tape to 'mask' my design on the screen, then I painted on the mod podge glue (I suck at painting lol). When the glue dried I gingerly removed the masking tape from the screen. The edges of my design came out crisp & precise, this is evident in the final print.
    The benefit of this extra and somewhat tedious step, is that the quality of the print is NOT determined by you painting skills, or in my case lack there of. Lol
    Sir, thank you soooooo much for sharing this, I know I'm about 6 years late but, better late than never I guess. Thank you once again Sir🙌🙏

      That’s a super helpful tip because my design has a lot of text and while I could fudge a shape, text is awful for me to trace. I wonder if letter stickers instead if that would work like masking tape.

    I know you posted this a while ago. I just want to say THANK YOU!!! I've made so many shirts already with this process. It took a minute to perfect everything, especially filling everything completely with the mod podge, but I cannot thank you enough for making screen printing so easy!! It does take time for more intricate pictures, but it's such a fun hobby, and I have my own shirts that not a single other person does! I appreciate you sharing your craft. It's helped me focus my energy and time, and you have no idea what that truly means to me. Anyone out there wanting to screen print: TRY THIS EXACTLY THE WAY PARKER TELLS YOU! Again, thank you. I have a whole new wardrobe now!!!

      +Kim B Yay! This is exactly the reason I uploaded this video. I'm the kind of guy that needs to have my own custom stuff, but online resources will charge me an arm and a leg for a single shirt. I'm glad to hear it has helped a kindred spirit

    When you are washing the screen, is there any special product you use to get all the ink out? This video has been the least anxiety filled tutorial I've watched. Most of the others have 20 more steps that make it seem impossible to do at home. Thank you!

    • @dutchik5107
      @dutchik5107 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      TheDragontamerno3 modge podge is water based. so washing the screen. will probably just, if it gets the ink out. also the modge podge of.
      but if it's to not waste organza. organza is really cheap.
      maybe you can just reuse it, without washing it. just drying it.

    • @diji5071

      I find that the wet paint will rinse off easily without getting the dried glue too wet, if you do it quickly you can get away with it. Maybe a couple touchups around the edges and it's good for another round for sure.

    • @parkernalch
      @parkernalch  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That is a minimalist-esque painting of Matt Smith (you can see David Tennant just next to it. I figure it would be quite easy to print as long as I had the time to make three screens. I got it as a gift, so I would have to ask whether it was an original work or not before I spent the time printing it

      hello and thank you for your time, I've been wanting to learn how to screen print without spending so much since I always need about 6-8 shirts thank you for the tutorial. my question is... How would I clean the screen? wouldn't the Modge Podge wash off? also, would I be able to stick a vinyl sticker on to the fabric or paper cut out and then squeegee Modge podge through, remove the sticker and then dry the Modge?

    • @parkernalch
      @parkernalch  8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      +Klaem0re You'll be glad to know that the mod podge does not wash out of the screen. Once it is dry, the screen is set; you can wash ink out without worrying about the glue. If you have the resources to make a vinyl sticker in your desired design, then I'd say go for it! That sounds like a good idea :)

    How would you suggest doing multiple layers of color? Would you let the ink dry and iron it each time you do a color? Or would it be better to do all of the colors one after another, let it dry, and then iron it? If that makes sense ^^;

      just wash your screen right away after use with warm water and let it dry. You can use the screen and do multiple shirts all in a row but a fresh clean screen is best so you don't get residual ink from the last time in the next one.

    Wow! 🤗 mahalo so much! I’m so excited to try this...I’ve been on a screen painting video bender for days, maybe even weeks lol...this is doable...I actually have everything already except for the ink and squeegee thing. Much Aloha from Maui. Mahalo for sharing your knowledge! Truly. God Bless You! ❤️😇🙏🌈🌺🌴🌊🏄‍♀️🎚🕊💛🌸✨❣️

      parkernalch Awh thanks so much for watching! They're pretty fun to make albeit tie consuming, much like stencils and screen printing :p what would you say was your most intricate screen print you've done?

    • @parkernalch
      @parkernalch  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      (aly)AwayLemonade Beyond a certain point, intricacy stops mattering if you switch to a method that uses photoemulsion. You can copy anything you can print on a piece of paper! That aside, this design is the one I am the most proud of: imgur.com/8C3M9gs :)

      @alyAwayLemonade 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmm yes I was thinking of a hobby knife and itty bitty details for applique stencils (which is the method I used to do) but the method you showed in your video seems much better. The musical instruments are gorgeous I'd never be able to tell it was handmade very professional work!

      +Kenya Harden this may be too little too late, but here goes:
      1. Make the design simple and bold. This method thrives with designs like that. It also shortens your time from start to finish.
      2. See if you can buy shirts in bulk online. I have yet to find a brick and mortar store that can match bulk pricing online. I frequently find shirts that are less than $2 for my projects
      3. Have fun with it and if possible have the kids help you with the process! Who knows, you may inspire a little designer in the making!
