    About me:
Hi, I'm Harry, and I'm intensely passionate about personality typing and self-development - so much so that I have created my own Jung-inspired system, taking a more high-resolution look at the factors making up personality.
Through Cognitive Personality Theory I examine the underlying mechanisms behind cognition, and the means through which a single type can have limitless individual variation - I believe type itself is just a set of cognitive predispositions that can according to the needs of the situation be overcome.
I don't believe any type is limited in what they can achieve, but have noticed sensationalist attitudes and internet trends propagating a culture in which type-development is actively discouraged in favour of conforming to simplistic archetypes. Through CPT I hope to dispel various myths and oversimplifications of what constitutes personality type, and along the way encourage a healthier attitude towards type that allows a person to become not who they are told they are, but rather who they want to be.

The Thinking vs Feeling dichotomy in general is a source of irritation to me - the idea that some types rationalise less than others is simply untrue.

@@CognitivePersonality Perhaps "some types rationalise less than others" isn't the best way to say that some types "use data points that are not optimal for their rationale when forming opinions, due to their cognitive preferences."

@@CognitivePersonality Every type is susceptible to function bias, yes.. but a high Ti user (biased or not) will naturally "rationalize" with more plausibility ( even if it is unnecessary).. While high Fi naturally favors subjective criteria when forming opinions (whether it's appropriate or not). So, I am of the opinion that "front stack" Ti (especially the top 2 slots) are indeed naturally better at "rationalization" as it is normally defined.. I don't really think of it in terms of ""thinkers" and "feelers".. maybe it's just a semantics issue :).

As an intuitive Fi user, I analyze emotions (both my own and those of others) like a Ti user might analyze systems. Emotions are completely logical, rational, predictable and understandable to me. There is cause and affect, action and reaction at play with emotions. The field of psychology is a science dedicated to understanding and classifying human behavior. If emotions/behaviors were not able to be rationalized, there wouldn't be well defined categories of behavior pathologies, or even systems like MBTI that provide a framework for understanding the role of cognitive functions (all of the above, which has supportive evidence in preliminary studies in the field of neuroscience). I have never understood why emotions are considered illogical. Once you observe a person's emotional reactions long enough, and in enough settings, it becomes possible to predict fairly accurately how they will react to and feel about various situations. That is to say emotional patterns can be observed and those patterns can be used to predict future outcomes. I agree with the content creator's theory that Fi and Ti are the same function on a continuous spectrum. Assuming that premise is true, and that rationalization uses the Fi-Ti spectrum, I would posit that one of the big differences between INFP and INTP is what holds our interest most, and therefore what kinds of information we prefer to spend the most amount of time rationalizing/analyzing. For many INFP's, somewhere in our development, an interest in human emotions, behavior, psychology, sociology, morality, spirituality, etcetera, gets sparked. In INTP's, many develop an interest in physics, astronomy, theoretical sciences, etcetera. There is plenty of crossover of interests since it is spectrum, and as we develop our weaker functions, our interests expand. Also, INFP's can be extremely logical and objective as long as they don't have personal stake in the outcome, and INTP's can be emotional despite their lack of awareness of their emotions. That being said, INFP's feel and attach a personal stake to many more subjects than INTP's do, and INTP's with well developed Fe might be better able to remain calm in a debate and therefore appear more "rational".

What an awesome video. Your CPT makes the most sense to me. I'm an INFP, but sometimes second guess and recently have wondered if I could possibly be INTP. This made it clear that I'm NOT INTP. This was such an Aha moment. I could relate so much to the way you described the INFP functions-- the INFP being a holistic thinker & specific concrete feeler vs INTP being a holistic feeler and specific concrete thinker. This makes so much sense! I see the world so objectively, that it could seem cold or detached to others. (which sometimes made me doubt being a dominant feeler) But when it's my personal experience, I'm very detailed in understanding and expressing. I place a lot of value in other people's personal experiences and can empathize deeply...but then I can zoom way out and just look at and seek to understand the world, society, people in very objective way- try to understand how it all works. Trying to understand how specific mechanical or non-human things work...my brain doesn't compute well.... I'm glad there's other people for that.

My god, that's so true. I can get offended, but that's typically after a lot of prodding or built up emotion and frustration. Compared to my INFP mom, a supposed INTP like me often offends her a lot by accident. When cerebrally helping her out, she can get pretty overemotional and preachy, despite her normally sweet and laid back nature. I can be a little harsh and sharp with my criticisms of some of her ideas, so I also contribute to the problem. It's something I think we understand and actively try to control. Either way, INFPs are very fascinating creatures IMO. It's always fun trying to pin down and label their emorphus Fi thought process if they are open to it.

It's just I've felt like I've never fit into the 'overly emotional' and 'irrational' stereotypes of INFP, and as someone who's very meh at writing, and most art forms, and HORRIBLE at music, (and generally very interested and talented at math and science, or seems to be a very analytical person), I questioned my type. But, this video helped me flesh some things out.

That’s how I also saw it as both functions are quite analytical and tend to function the same way but they just focus on different values. Introverted feeling at the end is a form of thinking. That was a nice explanation it warmed my heart :D. I think , I’m discovering that I am a INFP. And i hate that because I had thought I’m a INTP . For All my life I belived that i was a thinking person ; a person that did not have feelings or emotions. When i was a child i was terrified for being hurt , so I repressed my emotions for do not feel anything. Through many years of terapy and iner work , I rediscovered my feelings. At the same time ,I had a strong existencial and career crisis . I change enginering and Science for art . But i feel that i was incomplete, i feel that i needed to understand the very core of something. Later, I engaged in the Philosophy career , I desired that carrer for so long , but I’m realizing that my aim is to understand the human nature, because I need to find the meaning of the human life . However, the philosophy of today is (several times) constrained to pure logical thinking , and the human soul have a dificult place ; and that frustrates me. Sometimes I’m very confused because i like logical thinking , and i’m good at it (especially good) , but since i had my existencial crisis ( and maybe before) i began to understand the limitations of the logical thinking alone. That’s my story haha , I hate to think that I’m a INFP because that confuse me again haha . I have read in “Building blockd of personality “ of Leona Haas that introverted Feeling has not strictly related to emotions , a Fi people don’t must be a emotional persons. What do you think INFP friends? Sorry for my weird english. Greetings from Mexico .

    THIS! Oh boy, this!
This explains so much! Thank you!
When looking into the cognitive functions I'm really missing the discussion on how they interact with each other.
Especially when the usual, isolated descriptions do nothing to explain why you might be outside the norm of a given type - or even that you might NOT be outside the norm, it's just that those sides are never really talked about.
Because of that it's been hard to determine whether I'm really an INFP or might be an ISFJ, but the more I look into it, the more points to INFP.
There's a lot more I could say, but I'll just stop here before I turn this comment into an essay.

Denial of feelings in INTP: agreed. Feeling is 80% of the playing field; INTPs shoot themselves in the foot when they refuse to factor in the subjectivity that's inherent to their own humanity. A balanced personality would make use of both sides of the spectrum, with a preference labelled by their "type", but without overindulging either side (this applies to every measure really).

I’m still not sure about myself.
On one hand, on almost all online tests i score INFP, and I think I definitely have Ne Si as auxiliary and tertiary.
But I’m still not sure about my dominant function. When I make decisions I don’t consciously analyze the outcomes like Ti, and I don’t constantly weigh things with my own internal systems. But at the same time, I don’t consciously have this internal “moral compass” that I stand up for like the Fi stereotype, and am more relaxed with rules if I feel like they don’t make sense.
I’m pretty sensitive and am aware if my emotions, but I almost never freely express them unless I’m with people I trust/am close to. Also, I’m not sure if I value Individuality as much as people say Fi doms do. I recognize that I am unique and all but I am able to suppress my identity to fit in or make a good impression.
As for my inferior function, I’m not sure between Fe(intp) or Te(infp). I think I’m pretty weak with both, but I think I’m m worse at getting things done than helping someone deal with their feelings. I’m super lazy and I always procrastinate and that is one of my weaknesses, but I’m also very socially aware and have trouble knowing what to do in difficult social situations
Bottom line: I know intps tend not to mistype as Infps but I relate to both types! Help me please

I remember you mentioning in your ISFP vs INFP video about how INFPs have a very good amount of Si accuracy of their Fi. It honestly perplexed me as to why I didn't quite relate to that. As much as I relate to your descriptions of Ne-Si, and as much as I have personal feelings about things, I often sacrifice those out of a fear of not being accepted by the tribe. I don't really care about sports, but I stay because I wanna make my dad proud, that kinda thing. On top of that, when I read your descriptions of each function in the descriptions of your videos, it all started connecting. Maybe I'm actually an INTP with weird opposing Fe?
It makes sense, the pinpoint subjective accuracy of my logic, my sheer desire to add onto it, and the fear of details and judgment from others that I face when overly-stressed. I really like your description of INTPs being very socially intelligent, yet not being able to express it easily. This reaches me on a personal level, as well as the broad, almost interconnected views of the moral and emotional realm. It is t that I'm unaware of my feelings, I just sometimes HAVE to sacrifice my internal harmony for the sake of others. Or maybe I just have an overactive imagination, and I really am an Fi user. But the general "unemotional robot" stereotype of the INTP, I wouldn't doubt that it plays a role in my skepticism.

Wow. Just wow. That's it. I thought about this thing for so long but couldn't really shape my theories adequately.
I always had this deep desire to make sense out of world, to rationalize it, prefering to detach from my feelings, while I was in fact painfully aware of them. And then I just learned how to rationalize them as well. And this made me think that I cannot be this "emo artsy dumbass infp". Intp (stereotypes) was mostly on point, ti was mostly on point, and yet, I would still keep asking "just why am I this awfully sensitive with a mind this sharp?".
This part about infp's thinking process being reliant on a sense of existential importance is on point. This part about wanting to share this importance is on point. Honestly, it's hilarious - I never really enjoyed using my thinking capacities, I always thought I was simply cursed with this mind that suffers deeply from a lack of sense. This mind is entirely human, this thinking process is entirely human.
Damn... This community is so full of disinformation... It sucks.

I do agree there is a misconception that intp doesn't feel. We do feel but sadly it can be neglected either by our own determination to de-value or predisposition. I use the analogy of an EQ on 80's boom box, the signal of bass is there but the frequency is lowered in volume, I might not have the clarity or the fidelity of someone who is Fi. I definitely like the idea that you brought up about being caught in a vicious loop, the hurt feelings are so personal that we exact those feelings personally with no remorse. I chose to be detached because it is so cringe to engage in Fe. What Fe feels to me is like wearing the itchiest wool sweater, can you understand my ill anxiety?

Where CSJ has the opposite issue of including bathroom breaks in his videos without editing it at all. Which I think as funny. In 5 years from now I think you and CSJ will be the biggest TH-cam typologists out there. Because both of you are the best I've seen. Then they will start popping up on TH-cam video searches like crazy. And start numbering or organizing your episodes and have them all on your website. Anyway if you are patient you will keep succeeding. Note: You will truly take off if you can explain Socionics to everyone, with your own commentary (both agreeing and disagreeing), from A to Z. You will have your own corner in the typology world if you can do it. If you don't I may have to do myself someday. But as a background INTP type I'd rather not. (I've read alot on Socionics theorists, but only the tip of the iceberg because there is so much there. I wish someone can combine it with MBTI and give it the simple name "Jungian typology." Also don't hesitate to borrow from Linda Barren's interaction styles. They are pretty useful.

I get so excited when I’m explaining what I have found to others that I talk very fast. When you are doing this in a social environment it is easier to gauge your audience by their reactions to your presentation, therefor you are able to adjust your speech. However, it is harder to be aware of this while presenting your message over a virtual medium.

I appreciate you not showing our types as one dimensional. I'm an INTP that has been told I was strange for being a Christian as faith goes beyond logic. This is funny as there is an INTP in my church who has a doctorate in systematic theology. I'm also confused by the belief that INTPs aren't emotional. My feelings are often provoked through my Si child as music, nostalgia, tradition and other idealistic tugs at my heartstring can make me cry or move me strongly What differentiates the types isn't whether we think or feel, but our primary motivations and system of decoding the world. As someone that loves the INFP type there is one primary difference that has kept me from relationship with them. Ne in INTPs considers possibilities to inform our logic. In INFPs Ne informs their Fi and sees many possible motivations in people. Their mood can play a big part in whether they lean toward their optimistic "visions" or cynical ones towards me. When trying to flesh out my true motives I would explain my logic and often, because we translate life so different my views wouldn't ring true and sound like excuses for our natural differences and I would get the cynical side until I lost interest in trying or she cut me off.

Yeah, the only way I can understand Ti and try to improve it is through my Fi, and if Fi ethically values logic, that is a good starting point to improve it as they are both judging functions.
I cannot take the human element out of it, but my son can as an INTP. He often takes things apart just to understand them on a personal level, how they work and how to put them back together. If it doesn't serve a greater purpose for me, I don't really value that. He seems to want to understand it just for the sake of understanding it, but for me, without connecting that understanding to some type of greater human element/purpose, I don't see the point too much. I want to know if it will make things better/more efficient in the real world too, but I think this is also Te for me.
We can both be quilty of losing a lot of time to things and having no clue where it went, but for me, it's generally lost to research and being high consume that way, and for him it's from tinkering. I hate tinkering lol.

I tend to do extreme analysis to determine the “best” thing often but have difficulty verbalizing my reasoning to my significant other (ISFJ) who just wants me to get to the point and doesn’t care about the extreme effort put in and just want’s me to get to the point. LoL
My career has always been infra or technical support pretty much and I’ve found I am generally more happy when I am in an environment where I can apply my technical knowledge to help people- however this can fall apart when I have not internalized the technical system due to lack of documentation or training. I can get really stressed out in this scenario because I despise conflict -especially when I am the perceived “source”. (The actual source being insufficient documentation of the system or some weird bug in the system.)
I am genuinely caring for my family and friends I think, and tend to put others before my own needs in a reactive sense at least.
I also tend to feel super passionate about my favorite music, and have been told I can write well - so it put me at odds with the conventional definition of INTP.
To add to that I’ve felt I have had fairly sharp perception of others and expected outcomes.
So, with that background I have always not been exactly sure what type I am. However, even if I still don’t know quite yet, your theory has put me at ease, since I now know that if I am an INFP, it’s possible to think, and if I am an INTP, it’s possible to feel. It’s OK! Type is not a cage bound by a simplistic definition. ^_^

It is good to appease the Te inferior since they are mostly portrayed as not very strong enough in the thinking area. But I beg to differ, this theory is nowhere near the truth. I have debated some INFPs, i certainly know their Fi is different, very very different from my Fe, let alone Ti. But anyways, even ESFPs are analytical.
INFP's Te is not anywhere near to Ti, let alone their Fi. Fi is very attuned to values whilè for INTP, Fi is their blindspot, they are barely aware of subjective moral and tend to see it as ridiculous and overly dramatic.
However, INTPs do make decisions based on Fe at times, but these decisions will be filtered out by Ti. If it makes sense, keep going. If not, let's choose the most logical way.
Ne is what makes the INFP appear to be analytical and overthinking, but all their thinking is in tune with their values, while an INTP wîll set aside even his self worth in favor of what is logical (Ti), for the greater good (Fe).
Btw, I think you have Fe, this video is full of Fe flavor.

    • @CognitivePersonality
      @CognitivePersonality  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Haha, yes I do have Fe!
Ti being different in the INFP has little to do with the extent to which they employ it. The degree to which a dip function is employed is of course relevant to the individual.
Interestingly, your third paragraph indicates less disagreement that your former paragraphs implied, as the INFP thought process as attuned to their values expresses exactly what I said in this video: INFPs employ Ti *through* Fi.

One of the things that occurred to me while pondering this and previous videos (among other things), is how absolutely sensitive the oppositional function is. Question: the INTP can dip into Fi - Ni // Se-Te more easily than other type right ? Maybe we can say the INTP sometimes is more like an ISFP, correct me if I'm wrong Harry, see you c:

The more I try to understand thinking vs feeling, the more confused I become. Most explanations, including this one, seem to present these functions in terms of consuming and processing information, ie perceiving. Whereas I thought T & F were about evaluating and decision making? So how is T a different function than N?

Great video. I was curious about intp in your divergent convergent dichotomy.
I'm curious how Se works for ISTP cause I think I'm ISTP. Ti Ni makes sense.
I think I understand how your system works now besides Se Fe

so it is like, the INTP knowing Fe existence, understand how it works, and being so counssiencius about it, make them feel they cant just fake it, i imagine the intp looking at a party and saying "well, i dont think so" or "you know, that is relative" so how are they going to pretend being in the game theu arent? it is what happen with observing people, also i think may having Ti concreate, idk how to explain it, but like understanding more in a sistematicway the Fe and saying "my Ti have this concrete idea about you being unnecesarilly atached to this" like seeing things from far, so they can judge better, the disconnecting that occurs when you see things from a high perspective .
the same but opposite with the INFP, just that they are more like "well, that scheduelle is blind and nonsense" and all what i put with the INTP

    • @user-er9er2fr6o

so you can see how INFP would feel dumb following x thing when they know(as the INTP from their own value of things) it doesnt have any point.
also it make sense that that everyone says, INFPs being more able to fake Fe. and tell my if i am wron bc idk if i have understand that partvery well, but it is bc(i think) t
even if it is not the priory, they feel the pressure of the social well being bc they value it, i think they are capable of seeing it from far, but tdk how to explain it xD please help ithink ypu see my point, like INTP understand the Fe and can feel anxious about having to deal with it, like they are not in to it(not physically nor near to heart) but they could work with it bc they get it, analizing it, using Fi and all that.
so you could say INFPs are more dumb about it, they dont feel heart distanced so you are putting them on a difficult situation where thay have to develop something with this, it is so funny, bc they have a response just bc they are more confused. i mean INTPs would feel bad bc tjey dont have a response at all and they may feel like freak bugs, what ever the two of them end feeling social inept xD and the one who seems more social inept is may not wanting to be a freak bu faking things, like that is akward socialy.
idrk, it is all my suposse
it is interesanting bc this is how observing works, i fricking love it. also sorry about my english

ah hell I could literally be either one, I mean I do not like the idea of someone changing my routine, which is music, so music is more about feeling, and I used someone else's structure to produce my own. So it's not like I am thinking outside the box, am I in tune with my emotions? what are emotions even....I love to explore them alone, I think....I am not above them, but I guess the idea that I don't feel very confident in mechanical decision makes sense as well. I mean, if you get it narrowed down to these two, does it even matter?

Is this induced misanthropic attitude really due to repressed and undiagnosed emotions orrrrr medium to low expectations not being met lol. Seriously though great video.

When you say Ti ans Fi are polar ends of a continuom what are you saying exactly? What is the continoum? Shouln't it be esier to understand them by trying to see the symilarities and differences between the two?

    • @CognitivePersonality
      @CognitivePersonality  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

The problem with presenting them as binary extremes is that they become caricatures of functions rather than representations of the reality. Ti is objective internal frameworking, yet we form emotional attachment to our frameworks, whereas the subjective frameworking of Fi constantly overlaps with objective framework in order to framework values :)
