This song is an emotional tribute to David Gates's father. It never fails to make me think of my own dad, who passed away 30 years ago. Bread was a part of the soft rock 70's sound. They had a ton of hits.

Bread is kinda one of the hidden secrets of the 70's. With so much talent in that era, it's hard to stand out with mostly folk rock ballads, but they consistently did a great job of staying in that mix for many years. "Guitar Man" (don't think you've done it) should be next, and another example of just how good they were. I love that this channel delves into the softer side of 60's and 70's rock, because it was a very significant part of our culture.

@@Liofa73 Bread a "one-hit wonder"? Good grief. That is the most wildly incorrect statement I've ever read on the A&A channel!
Bread had *six* Top Ten hits: "Make It With You" (#1 in 1970), "It Don't Matter to Me" (#10 in 1970), "If" (#4 in 1971), "Baby, I'm-a Want You" (#3 in 1971), "Everything I Own" (#5 in 1972), and "Lost Without Your Love" (#9 in 1979).
They also had four other Top Twenty hits that remain well-known to this day and still get oldies-radio airplay: "Diary" (#15 in 1972), "The Guitar Man" (#11 in 1972), "Sweet Surrender" (#15 in 1972), and "Aubrey" (#15 in 1973).

"Although initial listeners may have interpreted it as a song about a broken relationship, David Gates revealed that it was written in memory of his father who died in 1963 before he achieved his success with Bread. …at his father's funeral, a friend took David Gates aside and said, 'Your dad was so proud of what you were doing.' David agreed, 'My success would have been so special to him as he was my greatest influence. So I decided to write and record *Everything I Own* about him. If you listen to the words, You sheltered me from harm, kept me warm, you gave my life to me, set me free, it says it all.' "

I wasn't crazy about Bread because I was into harder rock at the time, and also is a young piano player, by the time I was in seventh and eighth grade, I kind of got really tired of always being tapped to play the piano accompaniment for girls to sing the Bread song If, since it was such a popular thing to do back then. And that truly is a brilliant song.
However, this one got its hooks deeply into me and I still get emotional when I hear it. For some reason I associated it very strongly with my great-grandma, who died when I was in fourth grade and it made a huge impact on me, because we had a special bond and loved each other so much, a little boy and a woman in her late eighties. And I still think of her when I hear this song. It makes my heart ache, and as a songwriter and performer myself, that to me is the ultimate thing a song can do, is to affect someone emotionally.

Being 17, I didn't understand and didn't know how to grieve but it's been hitting me hard lately. I've had so many dreams about him which some say is our loved ones checking on us. The lyrics are so close to home for me, I did learn so much watching my Dad, I was a Daddy's girl. If he told me something wasn't safe I believed him.
